WHAT’S ON!
Getting Ready for Spring Beautify your outdoor living space with a few mini-projects, or go all out and redesign your yard with a set of patio furniture! For your backyard makeover, come visit our NEW Garden Centre (with outdoor cashier) and see our expanded selection in plants, accessories, BBQs, patios and gazebos.
MINI-PROJECT #1 We carry a variety of different plants, all various colours, shapes, sizes, and species, a selection of these are sure to spruce up your yard in no time. Some tips on using colour to your advantage: • Strong contrasts create a dramatic effect • A softer display can be created with a monochromatic theme • A dominant colour with accents in its complementary colour produce a beautiful balance • Adding a touch of grey can tone down a contrast that is too strong
MINI-PROJECT #2 Brighten up your backyard with some lighting! From the eco-friendly solar lighting to trendy pendant lights, you’ll create a feature the whole neighbourhood will want to copy. Whether you’re going for a modern feel or a rustic vibe, we have all the lighting to accommodate your tastes.
RE-MODEL! A fresh set of patio furniture is sure to revamp your backyard lounge. A vibrant sectional and pillows, matching table and chairs, or just a big umbrella to hide from the sun, we have many different sets to view instore. Hours of operation: We’re open 7 days a week, and are open early and late on weekdays. Monday to Friday

Spring is a time for renewal and change. One year ago, the world came to a halt due to COVID-19. Little did we know that we would still be in this pandemic in 2021. Throughout the past year, we have seen everyone maneuver and adapt almost every aspect of their lives. But one thing remains constant, Mission’s passionate sense of community. The Mission Community Archives & Mission Museum wishes to preserve your first-hand experiences and document the far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. To save memories for future generations, they are seeking relevant objects, text, audio, video and image files which tell the stories of the Mission community during this time of crisis. To find out more or submit archival content, please visit www.missionarchives.com.
@0.98livin
We started off 2021 with hope and celebration as the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted their 20th Annual Business Excellence Awards, virtually. Congratulations to all the local business champions that were nominated. We acknowledge your resilience and celebrate your accomplishments. Change is on its way this Spring with the Municipal By-Election scheduled for April 24, 2021. Keep an eye on www.mission.ca for information on where and how to vote. Tune into the All-Candidates Forum on April 8 to hear from the mayoral candidates about the issues that are important to you and our community (www.missionchamber.bc.ca).
@thenorthernborders
Many families are staying close to home this Spring Break. Tag @whatsonmission on social media to share your staycation photos and they could be featured in the next issue of What’s On! Mission magazine – if your photo has a What’s On! Mission magazine in it, even better! Continue to support our local businesses and restaurants and check out the community events and programs in this issue. Rediscover the many reasons why I love Mission.

Front Walkway Improvements that Boost Curb Appeal Your front walkway is one of the first sections of real estate a buyer will set foot on when coming to see your home. So, it makes sense to make that pathway to your front door as appealing as possible. The obvious way is to make it as clean and clear as you can. Ensure there are no obstacles in the way, such as overhanging branches, kid’s toys or potted plants. What you want is a clear, unobstructed and pleasant walk to your main entranceway. If your walkway needs deeper cleaning, consider a power wash. A deep cleaning isn’t a major project. In most cases, the job can be done within an hour. Yet, the result can be stunning. If you’re selling in the spring or summer, another way to make your walkway look better is to add flowers or other plants along the sides. Don’t overdo it. You only need a few flowers or a couple of shrubs to make a big difference. The great thing about adding a few flowers or shrubs is the impact they can have on your entire frontage making it more attractive, and adding to your home’s overall curb appeal. Making your walkway look better may seem minor, but keep in mind that when buyers make their way to your front door they’re forming their first and often most important impression of your property. The walkway plays a small but important role in making it a good one. Want more ideas for making your home show better, so it sells quicker and for a higher price? Call me 604-615-6446

Meet Regina Janus, dance teacher at Arch-Way Regina Janus is an accomplished dancer who spent a number of years dancing, teaching and choreographing internationally. Born and raised in Mission, she lived and worked oversees for 10 years before she returned home to Mission. She spent the past 3 years building her dance school with Tiny Toes Creative Movement classes alongside Little Stars for ages 5 -8 and 9-12. Now you can find her at her own studio, Arch-way Dance, at the St. Mary’s Centre on 34110 Lougheed Hwy, offering classes for kids and adults of all ages and levels.
included and she continues to move through them to adapt to the changing rules and regulations to share the love of dance of all of her students. She believes Mission is a special place with so much potential and hope and she has huge aspirations of spreading the magic of dance, building strength through movement not only in her dancers but in her community.
Arch-way was born from the idea that arches represent strength. She explains that “movement always has an arch of some kind whether it be within your body, your transporting movement or in a stagnant position”. She also loves the idea that moving through an arch or a tunnel is an exciting pathway that can lead to a new vision and a new beginning. There have been a lot of challenges along the way, COVID restrictions

Ami’s
Review
Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis (J.D. Vance, 2016) is definitely outside of my regular reading genre, but one of my goals this year is to expand my reading repertoire (and I won’t lie, the fact that Hillbilly Elegy is now a Netflix movie also piqued my interest). I thought this memoir would read the way the trailer for the movie plays out... lots of drama, Amy Adams screaming and crying, big fights and hopefully a resolution at the end (I haven’t seen it in full yet, so don’t tell me). Hillbilly Elegy is a careful recounting of the author’s growing up years in the town of Jackson, Kentucky – a town known for its violence, poverty, and addiction. It’s a place where a man can father eight children, but never figure out a means to provide for them – a place where a boy fights against his abusive upbringing without ever realizing it’s abusive, because it’s the norm to be amongst gun-toting adults who are as likely to blow your head off as they are to offer a neighbour’s hungry toddler a midnight snack because no one remembered to feed him dinner. As a teen, Vance wondered why his family, friends, and neighbours couldn’t rise above their often desperate circumstances despite the plentiful government opportunities, jobs, or financial help available to them. The author recounts a pattern of almost prideful victimization that he witnessed over and over and how, no matter where people immigrated to in search of the American Dream, the cultural poverty of being a Hillbilly seemed
unavoidably retained. In his book, Vance dares to ask, WHY? His own getting to the answer will stir up conflict no matter where you fall in your socio-political beliefs. Yet with a compassion you wouldn’t expect from someone raised in such an unashamedly broken family, Vance examines his upbringing with clearsightedness, and reveals how he was one of the lucky ones able to succeed despite (or perhaps because of) his Hillbilly upbringing... one that held him back as much as it propelled him forward. In fact, after high school Vance went on to the Marine Corps and later graduated from Yale Law School. Even though poverty, abuse, and drugaddiction were so prevalent among the Appalachian population, Vance remembers with fondness many aspects of strength that growing up in this setting brought him too. How living with his Mamaw (grandmother) taught him resilience as much as it taught him how to curse. How watching his mother careen between men and drugs like a ping pong ball taught him to be distrustful as much as it taught him understanding and empathy for broken-hearted people. Hillbilly Elegy is a fantastic choice for a book club, or anyone wanting to explore why the poor often stay poor. And AFTER you read the book, go ahead and watch the movie, although I doubt it will be nearly as thought provoking.

Mission Downtown Biz By Joanna McBride
Can Dance Studio Debbie Calicetto started her dancing career at the young age of 3. It wasn’t always an easy road, and she faced many challenges as she was born with a club foot. It was believed that ballet would stretch her bones and muscles out. It worked so well that Debbie developed a passion for dancing and the more she learned, the more confident she became.
BRIDAL ALTERATIONS & TAILORING CUSTOM & SEAMSTRESS SERVICES
As she grew and her dancing improved, Debbie moved into advanced classes of jazz, tap and lyrical, and had the astounding opportunity to begin teaching dance at the age of 13.
604.820.0528
Winning choreography competitions with scores of 100%, Debbie was teaching full programs at the Abby Dance Factory by the time she was 16 years old. Branching out to other studios gave her the experience, the proper training and the confidence necessary to open her own studio.
Can Dance is more than just a dance studio. Debbie's philosophy is that the kids come first; community, second; dance, third. “There have been kids that have come to me from all walks of life,” Debbie explains. “Kids that are lost and feel they have no real purpose in life.” Debbie has brought in specialists, art therapists, youth care workers, psychologists, anyone that could help these kids become amazing adults and never give up on their dreams. COVID-19 has had a huge impact on Can Dance. In March 2020, in tears and confusion, Can Dance closed its doors to students. “For the first time since we opened, there were no children around." Throughout the pandemic, they have gone through many adjustments: opening and closing per PHO restrictions, reduced capacity and online classes. Can Dance misses their kids. “There will always be kids and there will always be dance,” says Debbie. “And I will be here with open arms when this is all over.”

community skillscentre www.missioncsc.org
As a community minded business owner, Karla has forged many valuable connections over the last 10 years, and has the most amazing dedicated and loyal customer base. This has helped her reach many business milestones, carried her through the adversity of the downtown fire that left her new shop with extensive damage and product loss, as well navigating the Covid 19 pandemic as a small business owner. Karla is undeniably grateful for the love and assistance of other local businesses and customers that have rallied around and supported her during these challenging times. Karla and her partner Mike moved to Mission from East Vancouver in 2003. She fell in love with the endless mountains, lakes and the beautiful outdoors, but it was the small community vibe that made her decision an easy one. After starting a family, she found it was the perfect time to focus on something she was truly passionate about. I would like to serve as your Mayor. I was born here, went to school here and have built several businesses in Mission. I graduated from Hatzic Secondary School in 1994 and despite being a young person raised in a life of privilege, I found myself wandering the streets of Mission searching for employment opportunities and housing options that simply weren’t widely available. In 1994, there weren’t a lot of opportunities available to me and my friends in Mission. Some of my friends and classmates from that time continue to live in crisis, on the streets, searching for purpose and a chance to change the trajectory of their lives in their hometown. Many of my peers today are concerned about the future for their own kids in Mission. They worry about the lack of opportunities and options for young people in Mission today, just as we were challenged to find a bright future here in 1994. I care about the people in this community whom I believe are passionate and capable, and ready to hit any obstacles and straight on. I have had many conversations with residents of Mission and I am convinced that our community is prepared for the next phase of growth and development in the area. And we can do it carefully and responsibly, expanding while keeping the character and sensibilities of Mission and at the same time welcoming new people, new places and new beginnings! I believe that we can disagree and challenge each other to be better and in the end, we can address all our differences and make our community stronger. The next Mayor must be able to work with council and staff to empower, facilitate and serve every member of Mission. I have proven to have all these skills. If you believe that steady, attentive leadership is vital for this vision of a vibrant and strong community, then I ask that you also be a voter for me in the upcoming by-election. Stay Safe. Stay Calm. Be Kind.

WHAT IS FVYS? The Fraser Valley Youth Society (FVYS) is a not for profit society located in the Fraser Valley since 2000. We have been providing opportunities for personal growth and leadership through our workshops, programs and community connections since 2000. We have gone from a group of volunteers running a weekly LGBTQ2+ drop-in group in Abbotsford to a Board of Directors, staff and dedicated volunteers running weekly drop-in groups in Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack.
WHAT PROGRAMS DO YOU OFFER? Currently, we are offering a zoom drop-in meeting on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6PM. We are hoping to resume in-person meetings as soon as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. We also offer Education and Awareness programming for organizations looking for inclusivity training. Our main workshop that we offer is Terminologies, Risk Factors and Best Practices in Supporting LGBTQ2S+ Youth
REACH OUT TO US For Information about our C O N program, TACT Drop-in or any other programing email us directly. There are many ways to (123) 456-7890 contact us:
WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR 2021? Our Focus this year is to continue our online programming, through virtual drop-ins, online forums and fundraising efforts, including Fraser Valley Pride. As soon as it is safe to do so, we will reopen our in person drop-ins.
HOW CAN WE HELP FVYS? 604 200 3203 info@fvys.ca @fraservalleyyouth @f_v_y_s FVYS.ca
Support comes in a number of different forms for us. First and foremost, make it your mission to support and advocate for LGBTQ2S+, marginalized and at-risk youth; educate yourself in best practices in supporting LGBTQ2S+ youth; and attend or support our fundraising efforts, including FV Pride. Lastly, donate to our cause. We are a small registered charity always accepting donations that go directly toward program delivery. Mission Hospice Society BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Individual/Family One on One Our trained Bereavement Coordinator provides short term individual and family support to anyone who needs the support. Services are designed to meet the individual’s specific needs and we help people of all ages. We also make referrals to specialized professionals, if further support is needed. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS Memorial Services We host a memorial services once a year to remember your loved ones. Please contact Nathalie Millar for more information and dates. Pathways, Adults Support Group It’s not easy to understand or accept the death of someone we love. A grief support group is a group of people who come together to help each other through their grief journey. Some of the benefits of attending can include connecting with others who have gone through similar situations, associating with people who will listen without judgement, new ideas to help you cope and heal, time to share memories of the person who passed, and understanding what responses are natural and normal during grieving Women's Support Group The Mission Hospice Society hosts an ongoing weekly widow’s support group called Tea and Company, which is a weekly support group for women who have lost a spouse. This program runs Thursday at 10am in the resource room of the Mission Hospice Society. Circle of Friends, Children’s Grief Support Group This group is aimed at helping children deal with their grief and how to channel their grief in a positive way through crafts and sharing they learn to accept their loss and how to move on. The winter session begins January 24 and runs on Thursday from 3:30pm to 5:15pm in the Mission Hospice Society resource room Camp Zajac In July of every year we send Bereaved children to enjoy a few days of camp at Camp Zajac. Horseback riding, archery, kayaking are some of the great activities these children get to enjoy. All children, including those who have successfully gone through our Circle of Friends program are invited to attend the camp free of charge.
Walking Group Our walking group provides an opportunity to walk and talk, while meeting new people who share a common experience that can provide mutual support and acceptance. This program combines informal support with fresh air and exercise. Compassionate Friends This is a support group for bereaved parents offered by The Compassionate Friends Organization. They meet at the hospice office every second Monday of the Month. Richard Lepinsky is the trained facilitator for this Chapter. The mission of The Compassionate Friends: When a child dies, at any age, the family suffers intense pain and may feel hopeless and isolated. The Compassionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. After Life Conversations This group has been meeting for over two years at the Mission Public Library on the first Monday of every month. This is an open group where people come together and talk about Near Death Experiences and the possibility of communications with their loved one after their passing. This is a very open minded group and does not follow any particular religion or spirituality but welcomes all beliefs. It is a safe place where people whom have lost a loved one can share their experiences without judgements or advice. Youth Children Support Groups - In School This group is for children between the ages of 12-14 who attend Middle School and have experienced some kind of loss, such as a person, pet, change in community or school, separation or divorce, or health. This support group is once a week for 8 weeks from 2-3pm. After the formal 8-week sessions, this group will convert to drop-in, and we will be available to further the discussion and offer support as the children require. We will have a therapy dog attend on one or more sessions and have activities, arts, and discussions relevant to this age group. This group will also enjoy a field trip and invitations to our other day camps. *due to COVID 19 some interruption to programs and services have occurred, therefore we have adjusted our programs to be COVID safe, please contact the office for details.*

Here’s Owner/Publisher Ellen’s experience of What’s On!... “What’s On! Mission has allowed me to raise my family while doing a job that I love. The flexibility of this business has allowed me to fit in time for family and work, while keeping me engaged in my community. What’s On! has built a structure that makes it easy to learn how to run a business and still allows me to be creative. Nothing brings me greater joy than walking into a coffee shop and seeing people reading my magazine“
