It has been an unprecedented past two months here in Mission and all around the world. Throughout this ongoing crisis, I would like to thank everyone working to keep us safe and to keep the community running. Thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been affected by COVID-19. Many of our local businesses and organizations are closed or have had to adjust the way they are doing business. Throughout this pandemic and beyond, now is the time we need to support one another. When you are able, continue to support local businesses and organizations by sharing their social media posts and website links. You can make charitable donations or purchases online. Take advantage of curbside pickup or delivery options for retail items, gift certificates or prepared meals. Read through the many resources and blogs offered by locals who are trying to keep us connected to our business community. The Mission Chamber has a web page dedicated solely to COVID-19 issues with links and updates from all levels of government. Through social media, the Downtown Business Association, Community Futures North Fraser and the Junction Shopping Centre are continually updating us on who’s open for business and in what capacity. The District of Mission has just launched its #ILoveMission campaign to unify and support our community. Businesses and residents alike are encouraged to take advantage of the free educational tools, swag and resources to #SupportLocal.

@annedeg68

@missionspringsbrewingco

I know the economic landscape will not look the same at the other end, but I also know that Mission always comes together as a community in times of need. And for that, we are #BetterTogether.

PRESS RELEASE CANCELLATION OF OLD CAR SUNDAY Father’s Day at Fraser River Heritage Park In response to the risk surrounding COVID-19, the District of Mission Parks, Recreation & Culture in conjunction with the Mission Fire Fighters Charitable Society deeply regret that we must announce the cancellation of Old Car Sunday in the Park for 2020. Old Car Sunday in the Park was scheduled for June 21st, 2020 at Fraser River Heritage Park and was set to be the 29th year. This was not a decision that was made lightly or easily. Old Car Sunday is a Father’s Day tradition in our community and draws people from all over the province, as well as from our neighbouring states. The safety and well-being of our volunteers, partners, vendors, performers, sponsors and guests is our top priority. We will continue to follow recommendations from the Federal and Provincial government and Fraser Health, as well as local authorities as the situation develops. We would like to take this time to thank all of the community that has stood beside us for so many years. The Mission Charitable Firefighters Society greatly depends on this event to raise funds in order to assist several non-profit charities in our community. If you are able and willing to make a donation to them, in lieu of attending the Old Car Sunday Father’s Day event at Fraser River Heritage Park, they would greatly appreciate it. Reach them at http:// missionfirefighters.ca/ Your support and understanding is greatly appreciated. For more information, please contact: Joanna McBride, Events Coordinator, 604.302.7644 or frhpevents@mission.ca / Michael Todd, Mission Fire & Rescue mtodd@mission.ca

MISSION ON TWO WHEELS Waiting For You To Explore It may not seem like it, but Mission is a town with a growing and thriving cycling scene. Home to long backroads with smooth pavement and little traffic, to hundreds of kms of logging roads as well as hundreds of kms of singletrack trails in the City-managed Tree Farm License #26 - Mission has every cyclist’s dream ride on tap. From youngsters just learning to ride via Two Tired Tots, to elder cycling states people there is something for all ages too! One thing Mission has in spades - hills. And that does lead some to think that Mission isn’t a cyclist’s town. However, the Mission Community Cycling Coalition (M3C) has a saying - Mission Cyclists Do Hills . And today’s cyclist has a secret weapon to climb up Grand St, or Frog Hill - E-Bikes. Electricassist bicycles have hit the mainstream with all kinds of sizes and shapes and types of e-bikes to lend a hand gaining elevation. The best e-bikes are still bicycles at heart - they are pedal assist. You pedal, it powers. You stop, so does it. This means you still need to do the work, but you get a helping hand to make those mountains into mole hills.

hill repeats. Or else, if you love to gravel-grind, take a ride in Stave West and you can easily get in 50km of off-road riding with some amazing scenery and points of interest along the way. There are also dozens of kms of logging roads to explore with some incredible views in Steelhead up Hunter Rd. And finally - the trails. Mission has four main riding areas within the municipal boundary. Red and Bear Mountains are sister trail networks accessed at Mill Pond on Dewdney Trunk Rd. There is a local trail network adjacent to Heritage Park. And the legendary Woodlot trails are half in the Mission Tree Farm, with trails like Snakes and Ladders and Cabin Trail part of Mission’s mountain biking legacy. All maintained by volunteer trailbuilders and managed by the Fraser Valley Mountain Biking Association (FVMBA). Good people doing great things in the community. There are the events too! Phoenix Velo has done racing at the Mission Raceway for many years, and the Bear Cub Kids Classic mountain bike race is an annual must-do for the young cyclist in your life.

Depending on your flavour of cycling, a day on the pedals is best started downtown at the local bike shop. Get a coffee, a snack for your ride and anything else you need for your journey - or try one of those e-bikes you’ve heard so much about on a demo ride. From there, you can check out Keystone Ave and Silverdale for some smooth pavement and

WHAT’S ON!

We are so fortunate to have a supportive community here in Mission, from the nightly chorus of cheers for our Health Care Workers, hearts in windows increasing on a daily basis, and our community working together by physical distancing, while finding innovative ways to stay in touch. We may be apart but right now it feels like we have never been closer as neighbours. To continue with the local pride being displayed under direction from Mayor and Council the District of Mission has partnered with Community Futures North Fraser, Mission Downtown Business Association, The Junction Shopping Cenre, Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, Mission City Record, and What’s On! Mission Magazine to support our local businesses. We are fortunate to have a wealth of entrepreneurs in the manufacturing, retail, professional services, and home-based business world, and what better time to support and highlight them than now.

10

With us all being encouraged to stay close to home now is the perfect opportunity to shop locally with many of our restaurants offering take out and delivery menus and our retailers moving to online and over-thephone shopping. With health measures in place, along with options for contactless pick up and delivery these are safe and fast ways to shop that also add the feel-good factor of knowing you are keeping our towns businesses open now and into the future. To show our support for our community we will be running the “I Love Mission” campaign. Look for the new window decals in local stores as the program gets underway and to highlight your own patronage, pick up your own “I love Mission” pins and decals when you shop locally, to highlight your patronage. Ask for one with your next local purchase or delivery and display it with pride. Messaging, information and updates will be available through the District of Mission and partners social media channels and websites. We are better together – so let’s shop, eat and support our local community and continue to show our love for our amazing small town.

A message from Mayor Pam Alexis: Anyone who knows me knows that I Love Mission! We have so much to be proud of in our vibrant community— and our businesses are one of them. The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has been hard on our Mission-based businesses and many have had to adapt in new ways, but many are still open. That’s why I’m excited by Council’s recent decision to support a new campaign focused on highlighting the ways we can support local business now and into the future—when things are back to normal. There are many ways to show your love to local businesses here in Mission at this time. Many of our restaurants and coffee shops are still open for take-out for pick-up or delivery. Treat yourself to a meal. You could also buy a gift card for a service you’ll use once COVID-19 is over. Your investment will make a difference. If you’re thinking of online shopping, take a stand and support local online shops. We’re in this together. If you have a favourite business, get in touch with them and ask how you can help. Your action will go a long way. It’s how we do things in Mission. The current COVID-19 situation is not easy, but it won’t last forever. Thank you for your hard work. Stay calm; stay strong. Love to you all.

Ami’s

Review

Life as a bookseller has in some ways been exactly what I thought it would be. In other ways it has been equal parts both harder and better. I didn’t realize how reading would quickly replace every other leisure activity in my life, or how much I would enjoy sharing books with others. I also didn’t realize what a learning curve it would be to run a business (and to keep it afloat during a pandemic!). I’m still new at the game, so any book about bookstores or booksellers is of high interest to me! One night when surfing the Totally Bookish website I saw a book I didn’t recognize. “The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin. The cover was beautiful. The title was beautiful. It was about a bookseller. Why hadn’t I ever read this book? The next day I scoured the shelves for it. Not there. I was lamenting an inventory mistake when I located the gem mistakenly shelved among the young adult books. I quickly claimed it and bought it home to read. I was unprepared for the beauty, the grace, the literary quotes, the mystery, and just the wellwritten story held within its pages. I want to read it again, and I’ve only just put it down! A.J. Fikry is a bookstore owner. He’s grumpy, he’s middleaged, he’s grieving the death of his wife, and all he wants to do is retire and drink himself to death. That’s his big plan. A

few things happen before he can do that though. First off, his prized possession, a rare copy of Tamerlane by Edgar Allen Poe, is stolen. Secondly, a child is left in his bookstore with a note asking him to raise her. Suddenly, A.J. has distractions. He can’t retire, because his nest egg (in the form of the Edgar Allen Poe book) is gone, and now he has a little girl to (reluctantly) care for. Throughout this story, we see how fatherhood changes and grows A.J. Every chapter opens with a quote from a book that A.J. has selected especially for the little girl. By the end of the story, not only does the reader have a greater appreciation for literature, but we also understand something about A.J. and how his love of books interconnects with his love for those around him. We also witness that giving love is as life changing as receiving it. This is a story about finding yourself when you thought you were a goner, about doing things for the right reasons (and for the wrong reasons), and how it can all work out, and about offering grace to those who may not deserve it, but still need it. This is a book for booklovers, and it’s one that I will be recommending for a long time. I hope you’ll come in to Totally Book-ish and grab a copy of your own. Ami’s Rating 4.5 stars

WELCOMING YOUR NEW DOG INTO YOUR HOME

by Rachelle Mellanby Whether bringing a puppy or a rescue home for the first time, it can be a major adjustment for everyone. Here are some tips on making it a harmonious introduction. KEEP THI NGS SI MPL E THE F I RST F EW DAYS

This can be a very anxious time for your dog. Allow for a lot of sleep the first three days. If your breeder or rescue provided you with some items, place them with the dog for a familiar scent. Begin to introduce your new dog to spaces in the house one by one making sure to pet proof each room prior. After the adjustment period, you can start introducing them to friends and training can begin. Dogs young and old need to learn the rules of the house and may need to fine tune some of their manners. RESPECT EXI STI NG PETS I N THE HOUSE

Existing pets will need time to adjust to the new dynamics just as much as you. During this time, do not allow the new dog to use the

other pet’s bed, food dishes, or favorite toy. This is your job to manage, not theirs. Feeding all the household pets at the same time in a safe, controlled manner helps introduce the pets in a positive way (Tip: baby gates, counters, and crates are helpful tools). VUL NERABL E PEOPL E I N THE HOUSEHOL D

To keep your puppy from nipping the kids. Place puppy in a crate next to their play space or have the kids play at the table versus the floor. An adult rescue comes with a lot of unknowns regarding their previous exposure to people and sounds. Monitor all interactions and do not leave them unattended with kids, seniors, or guests until you feel it is safe to do so. Happy Training and congratulations on your new addition to the family! -Rachelle is the owner and head trainer of Dogs Crossing

BRINGS YOU

At Home Spa Facials For years, facials have been among the most popular spa treatments and are used to nourish, pamper and treat the skin thus evoking a feeling of wellness and relaxation. Right now with social distancing requirements in place, we are not able to receive our much needed treatments, so medispa owner Tammy Norman has put together an invigorating facial you can do in the comfort of your own home until it is safe for in-spa visits. This at home spa facial will not only help you look amazing, it will help bring calm and zen that we need now more than ever to boost our mood. Look great, feel great, pass it on!

BY TAMMY NORMAN

Step 1 - Remove Your Makeup Start by setting the spa scene and wrap your hair back from your face. Gently remove your eye makeup. Eye makeup remover usually contains an oil base that easily allows mascaras and shadows to slide off. Careful not to rub the area! As we age, lashes that get inadvertently pulled out may not grow back. Also, the area around your eyes is a little more sensitive, vigorous rubbing can result in bruising or broken capillaries. Be gentle. Step 2 - Cleanse With clean, wet hands apply dime size dollop of cleanser to your full face, avoiding the eye area. Gently apply your cleanser in a circular motion to the forehead (20 seconds), cheeks (10 seconds), nose (20 seconds), then chin (15 seconds). Make sure your products are sulfate and paraben free. Remove your cleanser with a clean, warm, damp facecloth. Tip: I recommend Azela Cleanse for this spa treat as it will leave your face feeling invigorated, tingly and clean. It contains azelaic acid, kaolin clay, biosulphur and arnica extract. Step 3 - Steam If you have a facial steamer at home, great, if not, not to worry. Instead fill a large bowl ž full of boiled water and hold your face 6 to 8 inches above it (putting a large towel over your head to keep the steam in is optional, always being careful not to burn yourself). This can be done for 2-5 minutes. This will relax facial muscles, open pores, soften blackheads, whiteheads, and loosen dead skin cells getting them ready for removal. Tip: The Azela Cleanse from step 2, you will be feeling the tingle, with a bonus of opening your sinus. Step 4 - Peel / Extractions I do NOT recommend regular extractions at home as more often than not it is ineffective, often results in spreading bacteria, can cause bruising, broken capillaries and sometimes permanent damage. Instead a good enzyme peel will go deep into the already loosened dead skin, open pores and help remove the oil plugs of blackheads and whiteheads. Apply a thin to medium film cover of enzyme peel to entire face except eye area with a silicone flat facial brush. Your face will redden and tingle. Remove with a wet facecloth after 15 minutes. Tip: CoEnzyme Exfoliant by Elegance MD. It is gentle enough for sensitive and rosacea prone skin, yet powerful enough to treat acneic issues. Step 5 - Mask Treatment Now its time for detoxification and nourishment with a mask. Apply to full face, except the eye area, with a silicone flat facial brush. Relax with your favorite book, meditation or music for 15 minutes, then wash off with a warm, damp facecloth. Tip: The Purifying Mask from Elegance MD is an ultra conditioning mineral rich mask. Nurturing botanical extracts and detoxifying kaolin and bentonite clays draw out impurities from deep within the skin while stimulating cellular turnover.

Step 6 - Serum Treatment Depending on your skin condition this step will vary. Start with your eye serum. Put a pea size dollop on the tip of your third finger and gently dab under the eyes and over the orbital bone (just below the eyebrow). Your eye serum should tighten and reduce dark circles.Next apply a nickel size dollop of serum, the type will depend on your skin condition ie Rosacea, Anti-Aging, Pigmentation prevention, Acne (apply to breakout areas only). Allow to absorb into the skin (2 minutes). Tip: Elegance MD has serums for specific needs - eye inflammation and dark circles; pigmentation spots; fine lines; acne; rosacea and sensitive skin, including eczema and psoriasis; anti-aging; collagen stimulation; and brown spot prevention. Step 7 - Moisturize Now, it is time to nourish. Once your serum has fully absorbed into your skin, apply a nickel sized dollop of moisturizer to your full face, again avoiding the eye area (look for paraben and sulfate free). This is the time that you an incorporate a gentle massage or tapping ritual into your facial. If it is evening time. Voila, you are all done! Step 8 - SPF Daytime Always If you are doing your facial during daylight hours applying SPF 30 to 50 afterwards is a MUST! Typically, the size of 1-2 peas is sufficient when using good sun protection. Remember to reapply every 2 hours when in direct sun and wear a hat to protect that beautiful face. Professional facials are recommended once a month. This at home facial can be done once a week. Keeping a regular routine for self care is extremely important especially in times of high stress. Nourish YOU! If you have any questions about your skincare do not hesitate to contact me. Be safe, be calm, be beautiful!

What to Fix Up in your Home before You Sell If you have a home that is overdue for a renovation, you might be worried that it will be difficult to sell as a "fixer-upper". In fact, you might delay listing your property for that reason. The good news is, you don’t need to fix up everything in your home to prepare it for sale. You can be selective and choose only those projects that are most likely to help your home show well and sell quickly.

HERE ARE SOME PROJECTS TO CONSIDER: • Painting. Painting is one of the easiest and most affordable DIY projects you can do. Yet the impact it can have on your home is stunning. Some rooms are completely transformed by a fresh coat of paint. • Kitchens & Bathrooms. Buyers love to see great looking kitchens and bathrooms. In fact, there are even magazines devoted just to those rooms! You don't necessarily need to do a major renovation of these spaces, but a makeover can be a good idea. Consider replacing sinks, countertops, and/or cabinet hardware. • Floors. If the floors in any of your rooms have become worn and unsightly, look at options for refreshing them. Consider replacing carpeting, refinishing hardwood, and/or getting tiles professionally cleaned and polished. • Outdoors. Sometimes you can compensate (a little) for a less-than-ideal interior by sprucing up the outdoor space. Explore ways to improve your deck or patio, walkways, and landscaping. Even if your home is older, you can make it more attractive to buyers with any one of these projects. Want more ideas for finding eager buyers for your home? Call today 604-615-6446

cycling in isolation

BY ROCKY BLONDIN

We are in unprecedented times - that is an understatement to say the least - and something we are hearing regularly. However, we are also trying to find ways to make this challenging time a little more "normal". The experts agree - in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we need to keep our distance. But for now, we should also keep active to stay healthy during these difficult times. One of the best ways - on two wheels! - riding your bike. Cycling is an activity that can be done alone, or in small groups. Families that are isolating together, can ride together too. And getting outdoors for some exercise and exploration will do wonders for your physical and mental health, at a time which is taking a toll on both of those things. In order to cycle safely - especially alone - you can take the following steps: Increased physical distance. There is now data which show that cycling and running can leave a vapour trail behind you. Only ride alone or with one friend, and with 10m-20m of space between you. Bring 'emergency' supplies. At a minimum a tube and a pump to deal with a flat tire. But having some tools, and a snack and water are good ways to be prepared no matter how long you plan to ride. Let someone know your plan. If you have someone that knows when you are leaving, when you are returning and where you are going, they can ensure you go and get back safely. A bike in good, safe working order. Ensuring your drivetrain (chain and sprockets), brakes and tires/wheels are all safe and ready to roll will ensure you get out and back in good spirits and good condition! A helmet. It is the law for most people in BC to wear a helmet when cycling, and it is just good sense to protect yourself.

Right now, it might be tricky to get one or several of those things as many stores have limited supplies and hours. Your local bike shop at Independent Cycles is working to keep people rolling. They have the supplies listed above, as well as stock of all kinds of bikes, for all ages of riders. If you go to the website - www.indycycleshop.ca - you can book an appointment for a time in the shop. Only one customer is permitted per booking and the team there is cleaning the shop after each visit. Please don't just stop in. Normally they'd love that. But right now, for the safety of all, please use the tool they've created to book a time and then they'll be happy to have you visit. If you are not feeling well, please don't come in!

stay safe and keep cycling!

Lastly, if the trails are your ride of choice, make sure you use Trailforks (app and website) to record any issues with the trails. The trail fairies are also working in isolation out there to make the trails better, and the more they know, the better the trails!

ASK THE EXPERT... Dr. Marcy Q: Why is good posture important for my health?

STOPSNORING SNORING STOP MOREENERGY ENERGY MORE BETTERSLEEP SLEEP BETTER LOSE LOSEWEIGHT WEIGHT

A: Good posture not only makes you look friendly and more confident, it also delivers increased energy, better breathing, easier digestion, improved circulation, and less wear and tear on your joints. It’s an investment in both your appearance and your health. The secret to good posture is maintaining the spine’s natural curves. If your spine is not properly aligned, your muscles and ligaments have to work harder to keep you upright and this can result in strain and pain. Q: Can I visit Dr. Marcy for chiropractic care during my pregnancy? A: Yes, the adjustment and care is modified to meet your unique needs during each stage of pregnancy. Often the adjustment is performed with an instrument. Theadjustments do not involve any twisting of your back or neck during this time in your life.

THE SHOPS AT MISSION HILL

Q: Can I benefit from chiropractic care if I am not in pain? A: Pain in your back is definitely an indication that something is wrong, especially if the pain is chronic and stops you from doing everyday chores and activities. But you don’t always feel pain in your back when there is a problem. Restricted movement or discomfort in your arms, legs and shoulders are also indications that you would benefit from a chiropractic assessment.

Today we found out a few interesting things about Satti Grewal, owner of Swing Optical in downtown Mission. Satti moved from India to Canada in 1993 with a Masters in Political Science. Here, he worked a variety of jobs such as selling RESP’s, delivering newspapers, driving limousines and even did some volunteer speed watch work with the RCMP in downtown Mission. With the guidance and advice from a good friend, Satti made the decision to go back to school and pursue a career as a Licensed Refracting Optician.

Mission Downtown Biz

It might shock everyone to discover that the first place Satti applied for a job after graduating from the BC College of Optics was, none other than Swing Optical. They were a small store and staffed only two employees, so Satti ended up working at a variety of optical Stores around Abbotsford. Six years later, Swing Optical went up for sale, as the owner fell ill and they realized it was time to sell the store. “I had some experience working in downtown Mission with the volunteer speed watch and liked it,” Satti explains. “I always felt like I would end up here." There were others vying for the store at the time, but Satti felt the connection with the location and the owners as soon as he walked through the front door. “A connection was made immediately,” he tells us. “She told me that I was the right person for the community.” It wasn’t long after purchasing that Satti began to emerge himself in to the community, joining boards such as the Downtown Business Association, the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and Community Futures North Fraser. It was at the Chamber of Commerce that he first met Lyndon Balisky and the two became fast friends. Lyndon had just recently taken over long time Mission Optometrist Dr. Bowden’s practice. "We were friends from the very beginning. It just seemed the obvious solution was to work together to benefit from each other." When COVID-19 hit Mission, Swing Optical, like most places, had to close their doors. They were still seeing some patients that had previously arranged appointments or deliveries coming in, but were exercising proper social distancing and only allowing one person in at a time. Two weeks ago, on Monday, April 13th, our beloved downtown Mission was hit with a devastating fire. Swing Optical was, unfortunately, one of the casualties. Gemma, from next door at Goody Too Shoes, began to smell smoke and started banging on the door that divided the two shops. They both believed a fire to be burning upstairs in the residential apartment. Upon further investigation, they discovered the fire to be next door at WarCraft Games. The fire had escalated to serious emergency within a matter of minutes. “I had enough time to grab my laptop and a pair of glasses before I ran out of the building,” Satti recalls. Much to the dismay of not only Satti Grewal, but our entire community, the building was completely destroyed by the fire. Asking Satti if anything inside was salvageable, he is still uncertain, “There is so much damage done by not only the fire, but the smoke and the water. Chances are not good.” The building is set to be torn down this week and there are plans to rebuild as soon as possible, which might be as long as a year and a half. Presently they are seeking temporary space, so that Lyndon and Satti can set up and continue to see their clients. “I have been overwhelmed with the messages of love and support I have received,” Satti tells us. “I am so thankful to Mission and grateful to be in this community.” When asked if he had any words for everyone at this time; “Stay safe and we will be back soon.”

Magnolias on Main

Some say that flowers are like friends; they bring colour in to the world. If you look at the world as being Mission’s downtown, then nothing could be more beautiful than the colour that Magnolias on Main brings to us. Tami Klassen, owner of Magnolias on Main, was not only raised in Mission, but her heritage, her roots and her future is Mission. “My grandfather was an early entrepreneur in town,” Tami says, proud of her family’s community legacy. “He owned a little diner downtown called The Luscious Cafe and my mom and my aunts all worked there at some point.” Equipped with creativity, a keen eye for flair, and a love of flowers, Tami pursued a career in floral design. After graduating with flying colours from St. Clares Academy of floral design, Tami was drawn back to her hometown and worked at Wayside Gardens. It didn’t take long until Tami met Hitomi, the owner of Satsuki’s Florists, which was the original flower shop in downtown Mission. Tami explained, “She called me and asked if I could help run the shop and I immediately jumped in to help.” They continued in this manner for quite awhile, Tami helping while Hitomi was away, but eventually the long hours began to take their toll on the two ladies. Hitomi was away more frequently than she was in Mission and Tami was teaching floral design at UFV full time.

Finally Hitomi approached Tami about the possibility of buying the shop , and the rest is history. In only thirteen days, with the help of Community Futures, and their amazing team, Tami put a business plan together and managed to secure financial backing. “As I was driving along, I kept admiring them and commenting on how beautiful and special they were.” It wasn’t until she finished her drive, turning on to Main Street that it dawned on her. Magnolias on Main was born. With big shoes to fill and slightly terrified, Tamijumped in head first and really took ownership of her little floral shop. “That was when I really fell in love with Mission,” says Tami beaming as she reflects on the past 16 years downtown. “I love my customers so much and I absolutely love Mission. With the recent breakout of COVID-19, it was a big decision to close Magnolia’s doors and do business through only telephone, delivery and pick up. Tami tried to stay open but social distancing became difficult.

The fire was the next devastating crisis to hit our downtown and although they were impacted with chemical and smoke damage, Tami is grateful because it could have been so much worse. "My heart breaks for all the businesses that have been affected by the fire.” The love that has poured out of the community during these difficult times is overwhelming. Tami has always been one to give back. When she realized that her precious flowers were no longer of high retail value, she along with Caroline, made up 150 small bouquets. Attachinghearts that were handmade by locals, and with a lovely piece of music playing, they laid them at the cemetery to pay tribute to our community ancestors and loved ones.

“There was still so much beauty in them. It seemed a shame to just throw them out.” Magnolias on Main is still standing strong and Tami is determined to be open again in time for Mother’s Day. With the hopes of being able to start taking orders again on May 1st, the team is working night and day, as there is much cleaning and redecorating to be done. They say that April showers bring May flowers and Mission is cheering them on. Downtown needs its colour back. Thank you for bringing us all so much joy over the years.

CIRCULATING IN LOCAL SOCIAL MEDIA OF LATE IS THE DISCUSSION OF WHAT MIGHT BE CONSIDERED THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN MISSION.

IT’S COMMUNITY FUTURES NORTH FRASER.

Hands down. Some of you may be familiar with their organization, some of you might have heard of them once or twice in passing…but most of you are going to be blown away by the support and generosity of this local, non-profit organization. Community Futures North Fraser in a federally funded business consultant that works with YOU - whether you are thinking about starting a business, buying a business, expanding or trying to make changes. Over the past 30+ years, they have been there to support, advise and guide anyone who reaches out. From Mission up to Harrison /Agassiz. their consulting expertise and navigational skills run right up the North side of the Fraser River. “We are here to support and encourage from the very beginning.” Michele Blackwell, their Business Analyst for 12 years, sat down with us to walk us through only a small percentage of the assistance they provide on a daily basis. “Everything from registering your business name to cash flow training, creating a business plan, market research, budgeting and a loans program.” Gwen Atkinson, their Marketing Director, joined Community Futures after 10 years working with local credit unions and a strong background in working with small businesses. “It frustrated me to see people come into the credit unionwith such fabulous business ideas,” Gwen explained to us, “only to see them walk out the door when they couldn’t receive proper funding, or the much needed training. I would always refer them to Community Futures, as I knew that they would be the ones to help start them off properly.” It’s true. Community Futures has provided financial support, as well as initial funding to numerous businesses in our community. When she was in the Credit Union system Atkinson saw the big gap in the startup process and knew that she was meant more for a position based on partnership, than one primarily based on sales. Both Michele and Gwen light up when they recollect the businesses in our community that their assistance has directly impacted. Community Futures is currently going through a transition. After 5 years at Welton Plaza, they are relocating one block up to a new location on 2nd Avenue. The two ladies agree that it’s wonderful to be able to remain in the downtown core. If you haven’t already checked them out, their Grand Opening will be on May 28th, 33163 2nd Avenue.

For almost 50 years the Mission Arts Council has been making connections in our community. Since our establishment as a non-profit organization in 1972, we have been an integral part of bringing Arts & Culture to Mission. Sadly, due to the COVID-19 virus, we have had to put our activities on hold for now. Whether promoting local emerging artists in our Rock Family Gallery, offering art classes and Camp MAC, operating Mission Clay Worx, providing volunteer opportunities for youth at our River’s Edge Haunted Attraction, and families with free entertainment at our Fraser Valley Children’s Festival, or kicking off the holiday season with our huge Christmas Craft Market, the Mission Arts Council is committed to continuing to make these connections in the future. We will get through these challenging times together as a community and we look forward to being socially connected once more.

In times like these, music keeps us going. In keeping with public health decisions, we deeply regret to announce that the 2020 festival, slated to run from July 24 – 26, has been cancelled.

Elage Diouf by Ben Shaevitz (2019)

As with our fellow festivals and events around the world during the COVID-19 crisis, our highest priority is to ensure the health and well being of our musical friends and our community – the valued artists, audience members, volunteers, suppliers, vendors and all who attend and participate in the festival. We know you will understand the need to make this heartrending decision, and we share your disappointment. The festival truly appreciates the longstanding support of folks like you in our community, the funders and sponsors and so many others over the last three plus decades. We look forward to seeing you all in the park again next year. REFUNDS For those who have purchased their ticket for MFMF 2020, refunds will automatically be processed after May 1, 2020. No further action is required. If you would like to donate the value of your ticket to the MFMF and receive a charitable tax receipt, please go to: https:// www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/mission-folk-music-festival-society/. By donating to the festival, you’re encouraging us to continue to present great music and contribute to a vibrant music scene and community. Thank you! We encourage you to reach out and connect with the music community, and support artists in whatever way you can until the world returns to normal. Music brings joy and hope to the world – and most music-makers need our support now more than ever. Please buy artist recordings and merchandise, stream their music, watch live-streams, and follow them on social media. We look forward to the time when we can all safely get together again to experience and celebrate great live folk music! Until then, we send out our deep appreciation to all the people who are battling on the front lines on our behalf – to everyone who is working to keep us safe, fed, healthy, and connected in order for that good day to come. Let’s all keep a vision of relaxing on the lawn at main stage on a warm summer’s eve in our and hearts and minds until we’re in each others’ good company again. Stay safe and healthy, stay in touch, and keep supporting great music! Connect with the Mission Folk Music Festival www.missionfolkmusicfestival.ca https://www.facebook.com/MissionFolkFest https:// twitter.com/MissionFolkFest https:// www.instagram.com/missionfolk/

The music will play on again! We invite you to follow your folk to next year’s festival, July 23-25, 2021 in beautiful Fraser Heritage Park in the anticipation that it will be safe to gather together again then.
