THE FESTIVAL MONTH Welcome to What’s On Oslo in August, a perfect month for getting musical at one of Oslo’s many festivals. One result is that festival organizers know this is a great month for a party, and in this issue we show you a total of no less than ten (!) different August festivals you can enjoy a short walk or ride from where you are staying. But if festivals seem like a bit too much action on lazy Scandinavian summer days, you can take a look at our great front page story about one of Oslo’s most exciting new attractions. The Viking Planet experience centre opened in June and is using groundbreaking technology to make the Viking age come alive, becoming an instant hit in the process.
In another article we introduce you to Popsenteret, a fun and fascinating centre that presents the history of Norwegian music. It also lets you get in on the action yourself by recording a hit song from their archives or singing and mixing your own songs in a real sound studio! As always, this issue includes our indispensable Event Calendar, with things to get up to all over town whatever your preferences. Then there is our classic guide to exhibitions and activities in our Museum List, and guides to shopping, eating out and nightlife. Near the end of the magazine we have included maps and public transport information to help you find your way around town.

With an extreme stage show and hard hitting music videos, american Christeene has become a popular and discussed artist online. Her debut album Waste Up, Kneez Down was released in 2012. Location: Blå, Brenneriveien 9 C More details: www.blaaoslo.no
The country band My Darling Clementine consists of the musically talented married couple Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgliesh from Birmingham. Dalgliesh has among other things played with Bryan Ferry and the Brodsky Quartet. Together they are both a fantastic country duo and a humorous standup-show. HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS
How The Universe Works is an art exhibition designed especially for children, but adults will enjoy it as well. Kunsthall Oslo has been transformed into a space for exploration, experiment and play, and the usual art gallery rules have been suspended. But art, for adults and children, can operate in other modes too. The gallery has asked some of their favourite artists to take up the challenge of making artworks, without compromise, for a viewer who comes with an open mind and a functional imagination but who may not yet have learnt to read. The result is physical, material and sensual but also draws on older versions of art’s role as an impure interface between worlds and disciplines, from ritual performance to constructivism. IBSEN ON STAGE: VIKINGS OF HELGELAND Adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's The Vikings at Helgeland performed with English subtitles. Ibsenian Viking drama in a post-apocalyptic age. Hjørdis is a conflict-loving, uncompromising and fiery woman, moulded from a world ruled by raw muscle and honour. Resentful of male advantage, she seeks to navigate a society that permits her no room to develop as she desires. When Hjørdis discovers that she is living a lie, she ruthlessly demonstrates her willingness to fight for what she believes in. One of Henrik Ibsen’s early plays, and pointing the direction of his future work, the ironically titled Vikings of Helgeland is a drama of intrigue, a feminist manifesto and a family tragedy. Hjørdis, played by Kjersti Tveterås, is an Ibsen archetype, a Heddaon speed, who understands that she is living the wrong marriage, and who proudly and passionately stirs revenge. As in The Wild Duck, her life’s delusion is exposed – and as in Little Eyolf, her own young son is who stands in her way. The conclusion is, as can be expected, fatal. L’ELISIR D’AMORE L’Elisir d’Amore gives us a combination of moving romance, slapstick humour and intensely beautiful music. It is a story of love – and alcohol’s – wonderful intoxication. Director Oliver Mears lets this comedy of intrigues develop in a British college during the 1970s. The slightly nerdy student Nemorino falls head over heels for the young teacher Adina, as she reads Tristan and Isolde to the class, and about the love potion which brings them together. But it appears that Nemorino’s case is hopeless, particularly when Belcore appears, with the aim of recruiting healthy young bodies to service. Adina seems only to be interested in the macho sergeant. This is when the quack, Dulcamara appears and suggests a quick fix in the the form of a love potion. Is this the reason for Nemorino’s sudden popularity with the girls? And will he win the heart of Adina before it is too late? Or rather, is it her who will win him? THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO
The Marriage of Figaro is based on the controversial play "e mariage de Figaro" by Pierre Beaumarchais, which in its time was banned for asserting that nobility and servants were equals, even going so far as to claim that a servant could be better than his master. In the Opera, the “high” and “low” of society are also portrayed as equals in a rich musical universe, and Mozart clearly shows his sympathies with Beaumarchais' revolutionary message. Mozart’s incarnate ability to create memorable, vivid characters through music is developed to perfection. This is Thaddeus Strassberger’s popular 2010 production. Explore the Oslo fjord Oslo's famous sightseeing boats have taken visitors for trips on the city's beautiful fjord since 1946. Today the cruises are selfie favourites, with amazing views guaranteed. The boats have been an essential part of "the Oslo experience" for seven decades. For all that time they have been immensely popular, and in continuous operation every single year. «When we aquired the company in the winter of 2000, it was almost like taking over a living museum», remembers Kristian Qvigstad in Båtservice Sightseeing, one of the the current owners. Today the boats offer enchanting – and Instagramfriendly – cruises on the fjord all year round. There are several different cruises to choose from, such as the classic Fjord Sightseeing cruise that passes the fortress, the Opera House and idyllic islands with small summer houses. There are jazz and blues cruises, and an atmospheric three hour evening cruise. The fleet consists of traditional wooden sailing ships and classic sightseeing boats. The magnificient wooden schooner S/S Christiania is the latest addition to Båtservice Sightseeing´s fleet of sailing vessels. She is Norway's largest wooden sailing vessel, and undoubtedly the most beautiful vessel on the Oslo fjord. «When people look back on their Oslo visit, their magic hours on the fjord tend to be among their most vivid memories,» Kristian Qvigstad points out. To find «your» perfect cruise, look no further than the back cover of this issue of What’s On Oslo. Happy sailing!

We recreate parts of the original museum architecture to allow for a bit of time travel, with a selection of paintings and graphics from the inaugural exhibition in 1963 on display, including masterpieces such as The Scream, Vampire and Madonna. We also dive into the robbery of The Scream and Madonna in 2004, a sizzling crime story. Through a wide range of posters, films, newspaper clippings, photographs and catalogues we share stories and anecdotes that show how the position of both the museum and the art of Edvard Munch have changed over the years.

THE MUSIC NEVER STOPS AT
POPSENTERET
52
Photo: Anne Marte Foer
Popsenteret isn’t quite like other museums. As well as giving you a fascinating history of Norwegian pop music from 1904 until today, you can become a popstar for a day. Popsenteret is an urban museum and experience centre of popular music, full of engaging interactive experiences, exhibitions and DIY studios. The centre permanently exhibits the vast and surprisingly rich history of Norwegian popular music. Temporary exhibitions explore known artists such as AHA, Røyksopp and Sigrid, time periods and genres. The temporary exhibition “FUZZ The technology that changes the music” will let you test your skills with real instruments in a playful way. They make use of audio-visual technology in both their permanent and temporary exhibits.
53
Become a popstar This is the moment your inner popstar has been waiting for. Popsenteret has its own sound proof studios where you record a hit song from their archives, or even sing and mix your own song. After that, you can dress up like a true popstar and do a photoshoot for your record cover. Also, the recordings and pictures you produce are downloadable from the centre’s website, ensuring you can dazzle friends and family with your new superstar skills. Meanwhile, the youngest kids have a playroom with musical games, instruments and videos – a kind of pre-school for future popstars. Why become a popstar the old fashioned way, when you can just visit Popsenteret this August? A must-visit for music-fans of all ages!

Oslo on a
Budget
It’s perfectly possible to visit or live in Oslo on a relatively low budget with a bit of planning! Here are some tips on how to spend wisely and still have a good time.
TEXT: TARJEI KIDD OLSEN
CHEAP ACTIVITIES:
The Oslo Pass gives you free entry to more than 30 museums and attractions, free travel on all public transport, free parking in municipal car parks, free entry to outdoor swimming pools, free walking tours, as well as discounts on sightseeing, ski simulator, Tusenfryd Amusement Park, concert tickets, climbing, ski and bike rental, and special offers in restaurants, shops, entertainment and leisure venues. More information: www.visitoslo.com/en/ activities-and-attractions/oslo-pass
the most popular part of the forest around Oslo - with endless possibilities for walks, trekking, biking, skiing and swimming, and with cozy cafes hidden among the trees.
FREE ACTIVITIES:
Rema 1000, Kiwi, Rimi and Bunnpris are among the cheapest supermarkets, and can be found around town. Meny is a more expensive supermarket with a larger selection of more fancy food. Various other supermarkets are also available.
You can walk on the roof of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, situated by – and literally sloping into – the sea near the central station, enjoying amazing views of the city, fjord and surrounding hills and islands.
EATING OUT:
Take a long walk and enjoy waterfalls, parks, bridges, swimming spots, historical buildings, bars, cafes, museums and cultural centres along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva, which snakes its way down from the lake Mariadalsvannet by the forest edge to Grønland in the city centre.
Examples are Tøyengata Bodega in Heimdalsgata 37, Café Sara in Hausmanns gate 29, Fiskeriet Youngstorget at Youngstorget 2, Viet Nam House in Bernt Ankers gate 6B, L’oasis Mazze in Trondheimsveien 14A, as well as Tasty Thai in Thereses gate 51 and Nippon Sushi in Sørkedalsveien 5.
The Vigeland Sculpture Park inside the beautiful Frogner Park near Majorstua boasts 212 impressive bronze and granite sculptures designed by Gustav Vigeland.
The Holmenkollen Ski Jump at Holmenkollen in the hills above Oslo is one of the capital’s most famous landmarks, hosts many winter sporting activities, and the area has great views. There is a ski museum inside the ski jump and an observation deck on top (free with Oslo Pass). The Holmenkollen area (especially from Frognerseteren and Tryvann) is also a great starting point for trips into Nordmarka,
60
Another good starting point for trips into Nordmarka is the forest lake Sognsvann. Both Sognsvann and Holmenkollen are accessible by metro (free with Oslo Pass).
FOOD & DRINK SUPERMARKETS:
While restaurants can be quite expensive, a good tip is to check out cheaper eateries for instance at Grønland, Grünerløkka and Sofienberg on the east side of town - although there are cheap places on the west side too.
BEER: Norway’s high alcohol prices are no big secret, but there are large savings to be had on beer if you know where to go. As with food, many of the cheap places are on Oslo’s east side. Among the very cheapest places are Rett Inn Bar in Storgata 39, Samfunnet Bislet in Pilestredet 52 and Destiny café in Skippergata 26.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN OSLO RUTER’S CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTRE
Located in the clock tower outside Oslo Central Station, the customer service centre provides information about public transport timetables, tickets and prices in Oslo and the surrounding area. The centre also sells public transport tickets. In addition there is a popular Ruter website with price Information and searchable timetables: www.ruter.no Address: Jernbanetorget 1. TICKETS
Oslo’s local buses, trams, ferries and the metro share a ticket system. Single tickets can be purchased on busses, trams and ferries, but are cheaper if you buy them in advance. On the metro tickets must be purchased before entering the train. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines and ticket offices at the metro stations, at Oslo Visitor Centre, in kiosks including Narvesen, 7-Eleven and Deli de Luca, and at Ruter’s Service Centre at Jernbanetorget (in front of Oslo Central Station). Remember to activate your ticket when you start your trip. Free travel on all public transport within zones 1 and 2 if you buy the Oslo Pass, which also gives free access to many museums and other attractions: ruter.no/en/buying-tickets/ticketsand-fares/oslo-pass/ If you have a smart phone, you can buy digital tickets using the "RuterBillett" app. Prices here are the same as when you buy a ticket in advance, i.e. cheaper than buying on-board your bus, tram or ferry. There is also a "RuterReise" app with searchable timetables, including live arrival time estimates.
DIAL 177 www.177.no
National phone number for public transportation services in Norway. Wherever you are in Norway, you can dial 177 and ask your specific question related to public transportation. The 177 website also gives you links to regional public transport facilities.
TICKETS RECOMMENDED FOR TOURISTS
Single ticket for Zone 1, valid for 1 hour. 24-hour ticket for Zone 1. 7-day ticket for Zone 1.
TRAM
Oslo has six tram lines that run through the city from east to west. The route network primarily covers the inner city, but a couple of longer routes go out to the residential areas west, south and north of the city centre
METRO (T-BANE)
Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All branch lines and the ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jernbanetorget (Oslo Central Station).
BUS
Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station.
