STAGE
Verdi´s masterpiece Rigoletto plays at The Opera in October
1 SEPT, 18:00
L’ELISIR D’AMORE
L’Elisir d’Amore gives us a combination of moving romance, slapstick humour and intensely beautiful music. It is a story of love – and alcohol’s – wonderful intoxication. Director Oliver Mears lets this comedy of intrigues develop in a British college during the 1970s. The slightly nerdy student Nemorino falls head over heels for the young teacher Adina, as she reads Tristan and Isolde to the class, and about the love potion which brings them together. But it appears that Nemorino’s case is hopeless, particularly when Belcore appears, with the aim of recruiting healthy young bodies to service. Adina seems only to be interested in the macho sergeant. This is when the quack, Dulcamara appears and suggests a quick fix in the the form of a love potion. Is this the reason for Nemorino’s sudden popularity with the girls? And will he win the heart of Adina before it is too late? Or rather, is it her who will win him? SEPT 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 19, 23, 28
THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO The Marriage of Figaro is based on the controversial play "e mariage de Figaro" by Pierre Beaumarchais, which in its time was banned for asserting that nobility and servants were equals, even going so far as to claim that a servant could be better than his master. In the Opera, the “high” and “low” of society are also portrayed as equals in a rich musical universe, and Mozart clearly shows his sympathies with Beaumarchais' revolutionary message. Mozart’s incarnate ability to create memorable, vivid characters through music is developed to perfection. RIGOLETTO
La donna è mobile. The woman is fickle. This is proclaimed by the duke in Rigoletto, while at the same time getting his fill of the opposite sex. In Verdi’s masterpiece, we encounter a tough men’s club, a father’s great love – and some of the best melodies ever written. It reeks of hunting, power and wet moss. An ugly hunchbacked man wanders among the trunks of dark pines, bearing a secret. Hidden away at home is a daughter he loves more than anything on earth. Among the guys, he acts tough in order to be liked, especially by his boss, the duke. When Rigoletto realises that the duke has also been together with his daughter, he commits a horrible crime, one that has tremendous consequences. Since L'incoronazione di Poppea, Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria and Lady Macbeth from Mtsensk, Ole Anders Tandberg has enjoyed international success as an opera director with work as Wozzeck at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Together with his team he has created a completely new Rigoletto that reveals the darkness and human brutality in one of the world’s most popular operas. 28.9.19 – 5.1.20 EVERYTHING WE OWN THE ART OF EDVARD MUNCH AND MORE In this final exhibition at Tøyen we will present works from all of our four collections alongside each other for the very first time. This will be the last opportunity to visit the museum at its iconic building from 1963. The exhibition will include famous works by Munch, including Madonna, Vampire and The Kiss. In addition you can see other gems from artist like Amaldus Nielsen and Harriet Backer. Visitors will also get a rare opportunity to see the work that goes on behind the scenes at the museum. The move to Bjørvika involves a major conservation effort, and as part of this exhibition we will bring our conservation activities into the gallery space. The heart of the museum’s collection is the extraordinary gift given by Edvard Munch to the people of Oslo in 1940. A less known fact is that the museum also owns three other art collections. These were given to the public by the collector Rolf E. Stenersen, Amaldus Nielsen’s family and Ludvig O. Ravensberg’s widow. Together they provide a unique insight into almost a century of art history.

LOOK INTO HISTORICAL RACE SCIENCE AND CONTEMPORARY GENETIC RESEARCH
52
53
Photo: HĂĽkon Bergseth
The award-winning exhibition FOLK – From Racial Types to DNA Sequences at Norsk Teknisk Museum is getting noticed for its approach to the controversial topics of race science and genetic research. People have been grouped based on their physical characteristics for hundreds of years. These groupings have led us to assume what people can and should do, and how they behave. Countless studies have been done; scientific investigations of people's evolution and variation, origins and histories. The exhibition FOLK at Norsk Teknisk Museum invites you to explore cases from historical race science and contemporary genetic research on human biological diversity.
Technology, science and ideology How have studies on human diversity been affected by new technologies, different visions of health and medicine, political/economic inequalities and racial ideologies? What kind of consequences can this research have for society and the lives of individuals? According to the museum, critical perspectives on science, technology and medicine become even more important when applied to the big questions of our time, including racism and fear of “the other.” “Often we must look back at history to understand today’s reality. The museum’s task is to connect history with the present and future and at the same time carry out high quality research that generates new insights for the world,” says museum director Frode Meinich.
National and international support To open such an ambitious exhibition the museum has cooperated with many other organizations. The exhibition is produced by Norsk Teknisk Museum’s in-house Nasjonalt Medisinsk Museum, in cooperation with Museum of Cultural History – Section for Museum of University and Science History. It has been co-produced by Árran Julevsáme Guovdásj – Lulesamisk Senter (a Sami institution aiming to maintain and develop indigenous Sami language, culture and society in the Lulesami area), Grorud Ungdomsråd (a youth council from Grorud, a multi-ethnic district of Oslo) and regional Setesdalmuseet. The Research Council of Norway and the free speech organization Fritt Ord have provided economic support. FOLK is such a significant exhibition that it has been awarded the Great Exhibitions Prize 2018 in the category Large Exhibitions by the British Society for the History of Science.

Oslo on a
Budget
It’s perfectly possible to visit or live in Oslo on a relatively low budget with a bit of planning! Here are some tips on how to spend wisely and still have a good time.
TEXT: TARJEI KIDD OLSEN
CHEAP ACTIVITIES:
The Oslo Pass gives you free entry to more than 30 museums and attractions, free travel on all public transport, free parking in municipal car parks, free entry to outdoor swimming pools, free walking tours, as well as discounts on sightseeing, ski simulator, Tusenfryd Amusement Park, concert tickets, climbing, ski and bike rental, and special offers in restaurants, shops, entertainment and leisure venues. More information: www.visitoslo.com/en/ activities-and-attractions/oslo-pass
the most popular part of the forest around Oslo - with endless possibilities for walks, trekking, biking, skiing and swimming, and with cozy cafes hidden among the trees.
FREE ACTIVITIES:
Rema 1000, Kiwi, Rimi and Bunnpris are among the cheapest supermarkets, and can be found around town. Meny is a more expensive supermarket with a larger selection of more fancy food. Various other supermarkets are also available.
You can walk on the roof of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, situated by – and literally sloping into – the sea near the central station, enjoying amazing views of the city, fjord and surrounding hills and islands.
EATING OUT:
Take a long walk and enjoy waterfalls, parks, bridges, swimming spots, historical buildings, bars, cafes, museums and cultural centres along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva, which snakes its way down from the lake Mariadalsvannet by the forest edge to Grønland in the city centre.
Examples are Tøyengata Bodega in Heimdalsgata 37, Café Sara in Hausmanns gate 29, Fiskeriet Youngstorget at Youngstorget 2, Viet Nam House in Bernt Ankers gate 6B, L’oasis Mazze in Trondheimsveien 14A, as well as Tasty Thai in Thereses gate 51 and Nippon Sushi in Sørkedalsveien 5.
The Vigeland Sculpture Park inside the beautiful Frogner Park near Majorstua boasts 212 impressive bronze and granite sculptures designed by Gustav Vigeland.
The Holmenkollen Ski Jump at Holmenkollen in the hills above Oslo is one of the capital’s most famous landmarks, hosts many winter sporting activities, and the area has great views. There is a ski museum inside the ski jump and an observation deck on top (free with Oslo Pass). The Holmenkollen area (especially from Frognerseteren and Tryvann) is also a great starting point for trips into Nordmarka,
60
Another good starting point for trips into Nordmarka is the forest lake Sognsvann. Both Sognsvann and Holmenkollen are accessible by metro (free with Oslo Pass).
FOOD & DRINK SUPERMARKETS:
While restaurants can be quite expensive, a good tip is to check out cheaper eateries for instance at Grønland, Grünerløkka and Sofienberg on the east side of town - although there are cheap places on the west side too.
BEER: Norway’s high alcohol prices are no big secret, but there are large savings to be had on beer if you know where to go. As with food, many of the cheap places are on Oslo’s east side. Among the very cheapest places are Rett Inn Bar in Storgata 39, Samfunnet Bislet in Pilestredet 52 and Destiny café in Skippergata 26.

METRO (T-BANE)
