SUMMER DREAMS Welcome to What’s On Oslo in May, when spring knocks on the door of summer. May is a special time of year; one where Oslo people feel both energized by springtime and exited by the first heady hints of summer. While spring has thawed the cold winter weather, in May the cultural life of Oslo has also begun a major thaw, with increasing numbers of concerts, exhibitions, festivals, and other events large and small all over town. One of the biggest events in May happens on May 17th, which is Norway’s Constitution Day. Compared to many countries, Norway really goes all out in celebrating this day. You’re in luck, because Oslo has the biggest celebrations of all – and all the details are in this issue of What’s On Oslo! What’s On Oslo in May also shows you several festivals you can go to, including one for children, one for the medieval person in all of us, and one for electronic music fans. If you’re feeling sporty, you can read about and then join the world’s largest relay race, known as Holmenkollstafetten. And after the race you will probably be hungry, so luckily we also have an article on the tasty offerings at a hidden pearl of a fish shop, right by the beautiful Oslo fjord. For those of you that want a truly urban adventure, we have written a fascinating feature on Oslo Free Tour, who give you an opportunity to explore Oslo’s sometimes clandestine street art free of charge. Then there is the interview with the Norwegian globetrotter who is the youngest person to have visited all countries in the world on a hobby basis, but who chooses to keep Oslo as his base. Speaking of Oslo; did you know that Oslo has its own version of the world famous Humans of New York blog? Humans of Oslo has revealed a human side to this increasingly large and multicultural city that has inspired both locals and visitors. Read about it here.
Enjoy your May edition! What’s On Oslo team

WELCOME TO OSLO With its 1000 year old history, Oslo is the oldest of the Nordic capitals. The city, surrounded by islands and forested hills, is situated at the end of one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. From the Viking age until today, people have looked to this place as a safe haven for trade, industry and cultural enrichment. Today, Oslo has a population of 600.000 inhabitants, and is the nation’s financial, political and cultural centre. Allow yourself the time to wander in the city’s streets, parks, forests or along the fjord, and get a feel for the capital’s abundant history in its character. Oslo is the capital of the changing seasons. The surrounding countryside makes its mark on the city’s inhabitants and buildings and the people’s rhythm and life-style changes with the weather. You will be able to discover a city which is full of life all year round, both in the narrow streets and in the vast forests. Oslo is a city of variation and contrast. Oslo is also Munch’s and Ibsen’s city. The art and cultural life reflect the fact that the inhabitants of Oslo come from all over the country and from all parts of the World. The city can offer unique sights and meaningful experiences, many of which are presented in this guide. Useful information may be found at www.visitoslo.com, or at our tourist information centre by the City Hall, open every day all year round. On behalf of Oslo we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors, promising an exciting and surprising experience. Welcome to Oslo!

READY, SET, GO! Join thousands of other runners for Holmenkollstafetten in Oslo, the world’s biggest relay race!
PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR! The Findings Festival pumps up the volume and fans of electronic dance music are gearing up for two days of hard partying. Following the success of last year’s sellout inaugural festival, organizers have decided to expand the festival from one to two days of non-stop electronic beats. With the likes of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) superstars like Avicii (Sweden), Afrojack (Netherlands) and Matoma (Norway), as well as less genre-definable artists like Jessie J (England), it’s probably a good idea to secure your tickets now if you want to get your groove on. Last year Bislett Stadion proved that as well as hosting athletic champions like Usain Bolt, it is the natural home for loud beats and euphoric melodies - backed up by dramatic stage lighting and pyrotechnics.

Holmenkollstafetten is a hugely popular annual relay race that starts at Bislett Stadium in the city centre. The circuit goes through town and up to Holmenkollen in the hills above Oslo, then down again, before ending up where it started at Bislett. Holmenkollstafetten is the world’s biggest relay race. Last year, 2,944 teams, with 15 members per team completed the race. In total, 44,160 people took part. The race has 15 legs and each team has 15 runners, with each runner completing one leg before handing a baton on to the person that is going to run the next leg. Do you feel ready for a run? Take a look at Holmenkollstafetten’s website and sign up!

KIDS, IT’S FESTIVAL TIME! Children are in for a real treat at this year’s Minøya festival, with lots of great bands and activities planned for two days of quality fun. The Miniøya festival, held every year by the organizers of the larger Øyafestivalen “normal” festival, features music first and foremost, but also art, dance and theatre. Some of the Norwegian and Scandinavian musicians performing are rapper Don Martin, synthpoppers Donkeyboy, singer-songwriter Thomas Stenström, hard-rock band Skambankt together with children’s TV personality Trond med Hammer’n, folk musician Odd Nordstoga (No.), children’s musicians and performers Molly & Partner, and more. In addition one highlight of the non-concert part of the festival is a theatre performance with none other than Pippi Langstrømpe (Pippi Longstocking), the strongest girl in the whole world.

Travel back in time and experience a slice of long gone times full of knights, longbows, jugglers and jesters at Oslo Medieval Festival! Oslo Medieval Festival – Oslo middelalderfestival in Norwegian – is a yearly festival which celebrates the inner medieval person in all of us. In other words those colourful, hardy, lively people that hung out in Europe from the 5th to 15th centuries. The festival features solidly medievalish things like a medieval market, historical play, a knights’ tournament, longbow shooting, concerts with medieval instruments and songs, and of course wandering jugglers, jesters, beggars and musicians. But don’t let the knights and longbow shooters scare you away! This is a festival for people of any age, large or small, with children’s activities to keep the little ones occupied while the grown-ups brush up on their longbow skills.
To secure that family vibe, people over the age of 16 are only allowed access to the festival in the company of a child under 16.

CONSTITUTION DAY:
May 17th is Norway’s Constitution day - your ticket to a day of flags, traditional costumes, huge parades, and waving to the royal family!
Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen
On May 17th, some 100,000 people usually travel to Oslo city centre to participate in the main festivities, a highlight being the massive children’s parade, greeted by royals waving from the balcony as it passes in front of the Royal Palace. The parade includes some 100 schools and marching bands. This is broadcast live on television every year, with commentaries on things such the traditional costumes worn by many, alongside local reports from celebrations around the country. The Constitution was signed at Eidsvoll outside Oslo on May 17th 1814, with the 200th anniversary celebrated in great style last year. Don’t worry though, for there are plenty of things to get up to this year as well! The signing declared Norway to be an independent nation in an attempt to avoid being ceded to Sweden after Denmark-Norway’s defeat in the Napoleonic wars. This failed, and following a short war Norway entered a union with Sweden – a union highly skewed towards Swedish
24
dominance – the same year, only gaining true independence in 1905. Despite this Norway considers May 17th as its national day –as proven by the large number of lively celebrations you can enjoy this month!
LIBERATION DAY By historical coincidence the Second World War ended in Norway just nine days before that year’s Constitution Day, on May 8th 1945, when the occupying German forces surrendered and Norway was liberated from the Nazis. Even if Liberation Day is an official flag day in Norway, the day is not a public holiday and is not widely celebrated. Instead, a new and broader meaning has been added to the celebration of Norwegian independence on May 17th. After the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden in 1905, the focus has also been directed towards the Norwegian Royal family. Have a nice anniversary!

The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945. Several showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions. OSLO PEOPLE
d e r d e l u e h onq wor C he T Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen Oslo People is a series of interviews with interesting locals and visitors. You have made several record breaking international trips. Can you give a summary? In 2013 I completed my quest to be the youngest “hobby” traveler, i.e. travelling only during weekends and normal holidays, to have visited all 198 countries in the world. That includes all 193 member countries of the UN, the two UN observer status members Palestine and the Vatican, and the partially recognized states Kosovo, Taiwan and West Sahara. It started when I visited Kyrgyzstan in 2004 with my brother. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to visit all the countries with names ending on “-stan”. By 2008, when I had visited 80 countries in total, including the “-stan
countries”, I felt the need for a new challenge and decided I wanted to visit ALL countries. It was one of those “stupid ideas” that people laugh at! People are a bit too serious, so I decided to do something about that. The year before I completed that challenge, in 2012, a British friend and I became the first persons to visit all five continents in one day. That one is actually recognized by Guinness World Records. The third record was to visit all 19 counties in Norway in one day, in September last year. And a few days later a few of my friends and I managed to visit 19 countries in one day. You have visited the entire world, but choose to live in Norway and in Oslo. Why is that? I am happy with the job I have here at [Norwegian national broadcaster] NRK, I come from here and my family and friends are here, so it is the natural place for me to be and I’m happy to have this as my base.

I have lived in Oslo since 2000 and travel “home” to Naustal [in western Norway – ed.] at least four or five times a year.
What are the best and worst things you have experienced on your trips? Pick one of each.
What distinguishes Oslo from all the other big cities you have visited?
I was almost stabbed once, but it turned out well – so I guess the very worst was when I was food poisoned in Mumbai in India.
I’m not sure I would call Oslo a “big” city, but I like that Oslo is so small that it’s possible to walk everywhere. What I especially like though is how close to nature the city is and how easy it is to get to that nature. The air quality is good and clear and there is tasty water that is fine to drink. In other words, there is a “purity” that I enjoy. It’s not unusual to enjoy travelling, but why this incredible wanderlust? I’m a very curious person that likes meeting new people and seeing new places. And it’s about learning about me, which I of course do when travelling and seeing how other people live. I’ve seen that people of course don’t live such nice lives everywhere. Here at home it’s all about getting a good deal on the latest jumper or pair of trousers, while many countries are subjected to wars, torture and other injustices. At the same time we, especially in Norway but also in Western Europe, live in a bubble. We think we are the centre of the world, but I’ve been to places where people have never heard of Norway. For them, they in turn are the centre of the world. Another motivation for my travelling is my restlessness - I have an incredible amount of energy. Many people feel tired just hearing about all the places I’ve travelled to! What are your five favourite countries? There are so many fantastic countries that I quite simply can’t rank them like that! I suppose I can give you five countries that I like a lot, though. These are Madagascar, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Iceland and Argentina.

I was there on a trip with my girlfriend. We were taking a train on third class. The train journey was meant to take eight hours, and lasted sixteen. I ate food at a restaurant right before boarding the train, and was sick the entire trip. Bloody hell, I literally thought I was going to die! Fluids were exiting through both bodily exits, and I’ve never felt that screwed before or after. As for best thing, there have been so many great experiences. But I just came home from a skiing holiday in Iran, and that was totally awesome. A country where “skiing holiday” isn’t the first thing that springs to mind, but where I went to a fantastic ski resort 3000 or 4000 metres up in the mountains, with 700 – 800 metre ski slopes. Iran, a place with a totally different view of life from here, a very conservative Islamic country, but in the ski slope none of that matters. The only bad thing was the alcohol free after ski! The crazy thing is that I was planning to fly home to Naustal, not Iran. That cost 4000 kroner while flying to Iran cost 3000 kroner, so I went for Iran. Are you the kind of traveler that prefers places with few tourists? I hate touristy places. If I’m out walking and bump into one of those tourist groups, I feel physically ill and almost throw up. It’s good that people have their own travel preferences, but I like to discover things for myself. I don’t like that everything is planned. People plan their holidays to death. You get invited to something like a wedding or religious gathering by locals, but “no, we already have plans”. You can miss out on some totally unique experiences.
Given that you prefer non-touristy places, are there any hidden pearls here in Oslo that visitors should discover? [Oslo’s urban river] Akerselva is a great tip. Last summer I rented a city bike, bicycled up along the entire river and counted all the bridges. I also like the islands in the Oslo fjord. Catch a ferry to one of the islands - luckily there aren’t so many tourists there.
to gather in the city’s parks and take advantage of the possibilities there. It can be as simple as bringing along a blanket to sit on, something good to drink, a grill and grill food, or just some shrimps to peel. As for specific places, Bar Bellini is a wine bar inside the Italian pizza restaurant Villa Paradiso at Grünerløkka. I also like the diner / bar Colonel Mustard at Alexander Kiellands plass.
Photo: Linda Cartridge/Samlaget Casablanca. Photo: Adelia Television.
Also, go for a walk in [Oslo’s eastern forest] Østmarka. Everybody knows about it but there are far fewer people there than in [Oslo’s northern forest] Nordmarka. I like nature, so Oslo is a great place for that. I only wish there were more mountains here, like around Naustal! In your opinion, what are the most essential places and activities in Oslo, when we’re not talking about those slightly lesser known places? A big one is jogging or bicycling in Nordmarka. I do that every summer. That is something that everyone should experience because of the untouched nature. Absorb the bird song, fresh air and beautiful landscapes. I like strolling around Grünerløkka and sitting down for a cup of coffee, for instance with friends or my girlfriend. In the summer it’s nice to grill or pick nick in the park. In general it’s nice
I like the vibe there, you can sit there and play lots of board games, and the food is quite good too. My favourite restaurant is the gastrobar Bon Lío, in Fredensborgveien. It’s relatively new, but fantastically good. But Bon Lio isn’t the cheapest of places. If you want something cheap but good, I recommend Saigon Lille Café at the top of Bernt Ankers gate. Oh, and Taco Republica in Torggata is another relatively new and relatively good place with a good price. I also like the bar Internasjonalen at Youngstorget. Internasjonalen is appropriately named in this case? Ha ha, yes indeed! In fact, I recently launched my first book ‘Gunnar Garfors 198’ there. I like the place and the name was a bonus. That book will be launched soon in English too, by the way. g

Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen At a fish shop connected to renowned sea food restaurant Tjuvholmen sjømagasin, the fishmongers Frederik Berntzen and June Wallun peddle tasty produce of the sea. Hugging the Oslo fjord near the tip of Tjuvholmen - the startlingly modern district that has arisen by the shop feels almost like an exclusive secret; a place where well-heeled locals go to enjoy superior tastes. But this is a place for everyone. A place where modernity meets tradition;
52
where glistening steel, glass and concrete facades and strict symmetrical lines meet equally glistening fish and shellfish, with sumptuous curves inviting to a feast of the senses. Where a fish shop is merely titled “Fish Shop”.
FRESH FISH AND A UNIQUE CAFE - This is the first time in my life that I haven’t had trouble getting rid of fish, jokes fishmonger Frederik Berntzen. The kitchen at formidably sized Tjuvholmen sjømagasin frequently needs to fill up its supplies with sea food from the shop, ensuring the need for a regular
Fishy Business! Almost swallowed by the sea at the edge of Tjuvholmen, lies a tiny sea pearl of a shop filled with some of what Norway does best of all - mouthwatering fish and shellfish.
supply of fresh produce to both. - The size of the restaurant kitchen means that I have to order new deliveries every day, Berntsen explains to What’s On Oslo. And what deliveries! The Fish Shop’s seasonal supplies include multitudes of top quality fish of varieties such as trout, salmon, cod, flounder, hake, haddock, halibut, turbot, as well as fish cakes, gravlax, smoked and heat smoked salmon - and live sea crab. There is scallop, shrimp, red king crab, crab claws, cockles, oysters and lobster. Some produce can be bought
pre-prepared, such as filleted fish. The Fish Shop is even a tiny café, where What’s On Oslo’s journalist enjoyed a heavenly fish soup. The cafe has four small tables where you can sit and enjoy lunch. Uniquely, you can even choose your own fish straight from the fish disk and have it prepared with a stylish and tasty garnish!
THE REAL DEAL Passion for maritime delicacies runs deep in Frederik Berntzen – and so does a deep knowledge of how to select, explain and inspire.

What you need to know! What: A great fish shop Where: Tjuvholmen allé 14 www.sjomagasinet.no/en/ The-Shop/
By the time he was 18, he had already finished working at a school for cooks as well as with seafood at a supermarket - and that year he got a job at a fish delicacy store in Sandvika near Oslo. - There I got the opportunity to go do things in a more creative and free way than at normal supermarket stores, where you can be like a robot. I went to the ports to pick up shipments of fish and witnessed the screaming and swearing between different competitors trying to get buyers’ attentions, a bit like in the movies, Berntsen says. - It was fun; a kind of “macho” within the food world, he remembers.
FISHY AMBITIONS While the fishmonger understands that people may feel attracted to the convenience and cheap prices at super-
54
markets, he argues that what gets lost is the knowledge, service, presentation - and often quality – found at dedicated fish stores like this one. - I have had a personal relationship with our fish dealer for 15 years now. I spend some of my free time going to places like northern Norway, Japan and France to work on and learn more about fish. I have experience as a cook, says Berntsen. - These kinds of things aren’t something you usually get in supermarkets, he points out. Frederik Berntzen has big ambitions. - Our goal is to really be placed on the map in about a year’s time. That people come to see Tjuvholmen and that they come to the Fish Shop as part of that attraction, he says. Judging by the fish soup, they might just make it. g
FISHMONGER FREDERIK’S RECIPE TIP
Pan-fried mountain trout Ingredients: Filleted mountain trout (fjellørret) Beetroot Cauliflower Almond potato Crème fraiche Dill Star aniseed Lemon juice Salt & pepper Butter Preparation: Fry filleted mountain trout with butter in a pan, with the skin facing down. Turn the fillet and brush with more butter. Add cauliflower ‘couscous’. Remove the pan from the heat after roughly 2 minutes (“depends on size of fish – it’s important to never fry fish very much”), but leave the fish in the pan. Let the fish rest for about 5 minutes. Add crème fraiche to the pan. Flavour with lemon juice, salt and pepper. Peel the beetroot and cut into cubes. Cook the beetroot cubes with salt and star anise. Cook the almond potatoes and then cut them into pieces and turn in butter and dill. Place the trout on a plate and the beetroot and potato beside it. Serve!

SHOPPING MALLS & DEPARTMENT STORES
Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten.no), which has a further 70 shops and is located in the same building as Oslo Central Station. In Oslo Central Station itself, the oldest section of the building originally the station terminal dating to the 1850s – reopened in February 2015 after a little over a year of refurbishments with the name Ø (Jernbanetorget 1 / ostbanehallen.no), an attractive new dining and shopping area, which also has a hotel and Oslo Visitor Centre (the new tourist information office).
Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37 / paleet. no) reopened in 2014 as a refurbished, innovative and more upmarket shopping centre that is well worth a visit. At Aker Brygge (akerbrygge.no), the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations have taken place and an attractive new shopping area opened in 2014 with lots of stores. Large shopping malls outside the city centre include Storo Storsenter (Vitaminveien 7-9 / storostorsenter.no), Sandvika Storsenter (Brodtkorpgate 7 / sandvikastorsenter.no), CC Vest (Lilleakerveien 16 / ccvest.no) and Fornebu S (Snarøyveien 55 / fornebo-s.no).

lumsbolighus.no) is four whole floors of famous and new Danish, Scandinavian and international furniture design.
FOOD & DELICACIES
You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate.
DESIGN
Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours. humans of oslo TEXT: Tarjei Kidd Olsen
The Humans of Oslo project portraits random people on the city’s streets, showcasing the spirit of Oslo with fascinating - and often moving - results. Humans of Oslo is a photo blog and Facebook page dedicated to getting up close and personal with the people that inhabit the city. People are stopped on the street and invited to be photographed and interviewed. Since the project began in the summer of 2012, this has resulted in no less than 1800 interviews and even more photos. Lisa talks about the meaning of life. Sandy gets an adrenaline rush from parachute jumping. Malaika’s mother died of cancer. Three 86-year-olds have been friends for 60 years.

There is the tiny girl who, focusing on the simple things in life, “loves baking sandpit cakes”, and then there is Mario: “When I met Nils I found the man of my dreams and I opened my own hairdressing salon.”
BEYOND SKIN COLOUR AND TATTOOS The project is run by freelance photojournalist Iffit Qureshi, a former political debater that used to write columns in the Norwegian media focusing on immigration issues. - I was very vocal on immigration,

racism, discrimination and islamophobia. I’m not a religious or fanatical person, but I just couldn't comprehend how people could demonize others based on their religion or ethnicity. For me it was important to nuance the view of people and focus on diversity and this became more crucial especially after the 22nd July terrorist attacks, Qureshi tells What’s On Oslo. Indeed, it was the tragic anti-immigration terrorist attacks in 2011 which eventually led Qureshi to stop writing and start Humans of Oslo, as a new way of promoting tolerance and cohesion. - When I interview people for Humans of Oslo, I don’t ask where they are from or what religion they have. It’s
important for them, yes, but I want to know who they are devoid of any social labels. What are their experiences and challenges? What makes them happy and what makes them sad? And if there is something sad, then how have or can they overcome it? - So yeah, it’s focused on seeing society as a whole and on seeing us as one. I see past social categories like colour, tattoos, religion, ethnicity, age, gender or sexual orientation. I learnt a lot about the decategorization of people after I started to work with the Humans of Oslo project, she says.
BEHIND THE VEIL The photojournalist argues that there is a lot more to people than meets the eye.

«When I was younger I was bullied a lot and I thought that it was my fault that I was different. I'm 26 years old now, and I was diagnosed with Aspergers only a few years ago after I read a book about the illness. I've been aware of the fact that I was different and I have a tendency to immerse myself in things I read, but it was a relief to read something which described my symptoms. If people are making jokes I don't understand them. If people laugh then I can get confused. What people say and their reactions have to be coordinated.»

- So it’s not just a photography project. Sometimes it’s about doing social work in the streets - and my concern comes from the heart. I genuinely care about the people I share the city with, she adds.
FROM NEW YORK TO OSLO The Humans of Oslo project began after a friend tipped off Qureshi about Humans of New York, a photo blog that is hugely popular and has inspired numerous similar projects around the world. - Oslo isn’t New York. I can’t find interviewees with the kind of heart wrenching life stories that sometimes appear in Humans of New York, so I decided that I’ve just got to let people tell their own stories, Qureshi says. Oslo may not be New York - but the pictures and stories published by Humans of Oslo have hit a nerve. The project’s Facebook page has more than 27,000 followers and a Humans of Oslo exhibition is currently touring Norway. A book is in the making. Qureshi already has several exhibitions to her name. At the first exhibition, which was held in city’s Intercultural Museum, she says she was told that only 40 or 50 people would turn up for the official opening. When she arrived,
Qureshi recounts, the place was packed full. It became the museum’s most visited exhibition that whole year. Recently, her exhibition at The Oslo City Museum drew thousands of people over the course of several months. The director for the Arts Council of Norway announced that it was an important project for Oslo and gave Qureshi his stamp of approval for her hard work and dedication.
THE SOUL OF OSLO Another exhibition at Furuset, a suburban working class area in eastern Oslo with a large minority population, resulted in the local library deciding to keep the whole exhibition as a permanent feature. They said it was the first time a photographer had captured the soul of Furuset. - I’ve experienced similar reactions to my photography. At Ammerud in eastern Oslo, the exhibition I did for their festival is now placed in the activity center run by the NGO Norwegian Church Aid. Even the local town hall office purchased an extra exhibition to have on their walls. I’ve been told that I take images which bring people alive and larger than life. So I would have to say that Humans of Oslo is something I’m very proud of, Qureshi says.
65
Apart from a couple of time-limited sponsorship deals, Qureshi has not received any public funding for Humans of Oslo. While promising that she won’t compromise the integrity of the project, she hopes that Oslo municipality will appreciate the importance she argues that this project plays in promoting the capital, and start digging into their pockets. - Humans of Oslo on Facebook has over 90,000 post activities [reading and sharing of published content – ed.] per week - it has a wide outreach to people of all backgrounds and ages and Ridder is my has enormous potential. soul animal, if its If I could receive the possible to have one. «For years I wandered around lost in a haze of drugs. I didn't know who I was. I come from two cultures: Norwegian and Chinese and I didn't fit in either. The media played a profound role in my self-perception and also how others perceived me. After doing drugs for 10 years I packed my things and ended up in a little fishing town in China. I couldn't communicate in Mandarin and had to learn everything from scratch through using sign language to express myself. I sat with school children and learnt how to communicate, draw and connect with my artistic side and my essence. I was a blank page and I managed to recreate a more positive blueprint of myself. Today I’m completely drug-free! It's wonderful to just have normal reactions after all these years. »

t r A t ee r St s! Tour Embark on an exciting and unpredictable journey of discovery to Oslo’s cultural underworld and clandestine street art.
TEXT: Tarjei Kidd Olsen
As you might expect, Oslo Free Tour offers free tours of Oslo. Far from being typical tours of history and historical monuments however, here it is the vibrant cultural underworld of contemporary Oslo that invites your attention. - These are alternative tours where we take the public to the most colourful places we know of and to the coolest bars, and last, but also first and foremost, we look at all the places in the public arena where you find street art, Oslo Free Tour’s Brian Larosche tells What’s On Oslo. Larosche, a native of Luxembourg who has lived in Oslo for eight years, is one of two guides at Oslo Free Tour. - We provide an opportunity to reflect on the subject of street art, both for practitioners like myself and for spectators. We weave a story that looks at street art as something illegal, but nevertheless utilizing many art historical approaches that you’d maybe expect to find in a museum, Larosche says.
72
- A PARALLEL WORLD The first tours were organized three years ago. They are inspired by the early 20th century avant garde Dada art movement and its connection to anti-art, an almost deliberately fuzzy concept that sometimes rejects traditional
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!
rules of art altogether and sometimes tries to subvert it.
What: Oslo Free Tour Languages: English, Norwegian, French, German, Polish, Spanish Where: Tours begin by the tiger statue by Oslo Central Station When: 13:00 on Sundays Website: www.facebook. com/OsloFreeTour
- The idea is that the institutional art world has become so distant from people’s everyday lives that we want our spectators to taste a parallel world, with art forms that are much more intimate with the people that exist in the city. Art on the metro, on schools, on walls – art that is free of charge, Larosche explains.
ART AS POLITICS This focus on boundless creativity is influenced by anti-arts’ development in a time of two brutal world wars, according to the guide.
- Anti-art as we know it today stems from reactions to everything going to hell in the Second World War. They had just witnessed the gruesome massacres of World War One and saw how rigid the Nazis were with their uniforms and conformist thoughts. The anti-artists wanted to counteract this with a free-flowing approach to the world that is skeptical to set roles, Larosche says. And indeed, Larosche hopes to wake an interest in political activism among the people that join the tours. For him, the tours have a political dimension related to issues such as non-conformism, anti-fascism and anti-corporatism.
- UNEXPECTED EVENTS - These tours are activities of a kind that I feel are popping up more and more often, where one offers a service that is a little outside of the normal. A field of interest that is like a gray area that you colour in, a magical experience where unexpected events and directions appear, says Larosche.
Photo: Oslo Free Tour
- Dadaistic anti-art is about having a relationship with art that is a little sillier, where you’re not so stuffy and where you can ridicule a bit and take away that sheen of holiness. That art should be so sacred is after all often an obstacle to daring to express yourself, he says.
- Sometimes we bump into one or another of the artists themselves, resulting in a much more intimate experience – and sometimes we even end up in people’s houses, according to the guide. While the tours are free of charge and the guides are volunteers, they do appreciate donations. - Yes, people can tip a little – a bit of beer money.
