RETRO SUMMER Welcome to What’s On Oslo in August, a perfect month for going green in the city’s parks, musical at one of Oslo’s many festivals, or retro at a hip hangout. At the beginning of August the city gets decidedly livelier as people return from their July holidays, refreshed and ready for combining work and summer fun at home. One result is that festival organizers know this is a great month for a party, and in this issue we show you a total of seven different August festivals you can enjoy a short walk or ride from where you are staying. It’s generally not good to be stuck in the past, they say. And they are right – except when the past is cool. In that spirit we dedicate this issue to everything cool in Oslo. Specifically, we treat you to a guide to some of the trendy retro places you can check out, from a 1950s diner or a nostalgic bar with pinball machines and Space Invaders, to a hairdresser that gives you that Marilyn Monroe or Elvis

Presley look and an old school coffee shop where you can drink some of the world’s best coffee and buy the furniture. But if festivals and cool hangouts seems like a bit too much action, then our big and updated guide to the city’s very popular parks should help. They come in many shapes and sizes, offering everything from great views, impressive statues and exotic plant life to simple, relaxing spots for resting and picnicking. As always we include our indispensable overview of four event highlights, guide to activities at the city’s many museums, event calendar with things to get up to all over town and whatever your preferences, and our practical starter guides to wining and dining, shopping and clubs and bars. Near the end of the magazine we have included maps and public transport information to help you find your way around town.

Enjoy! Team What’s On Oslo

WELCOME TO OSLO With its 1000 year old history, Oslo is the oldest of the Nordic capitals. The city, surrounded by islands and forested hills, is situated at the end of one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. From the Viking age until today, people have looked to this place as a safe haven for trade, industry and cultural enrichment. Today, Oslo has a population of 600.000 inhabitants, and is the nation’s financial, political and cultural centre. Allow yourself the time to wander in the city’s streets, parks, forests or along the fjord, and get a feel for the capital’s abundant history in its character. Oslo is the capital of the changing seasons. The surrounding countryside makes its mark on the city’s inhabitants and buildings and the people’s rhythm and life-style changes with the weather. You will be able to discover a city which is full of life all year round, both in the narrow streets and in the vast forests. Oslo is a city of variation and contrast. Oslo is also Munch’s and Ibsen’s city. The art and cultural life reflect the fact that the inhabitants of Oslo come from all over the country and from all parts of the World. The city can offer unique sights and meaningful experiences, many of which are presented in this guide. Useful information may be found at www.visitoslo.com, or at our Oslo Visitor Centre inside Ø (part of the central station), open every day all year round. On behalf of Oslo we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors, promising an exciting and surprising experience. Welcome to Oslo!

THE BARBER OF SEVILLE Gioachino Rossini's classic opera buffa The Barber of Seville is full of clowning, intrigue and sparkling music. This is where the daring barber Figaro enters... This colourful production by François de Carpentries and Karine Van Hercke has been performed to full houses for three seasons. Color Me Rad Oslo

01 AUG 16

Restaurant Day Oslo

This is a 5 kilometre long paint race that is extremely loosely based on an Indian spiritual tradition, and where you will end up covered in coloured powder shot from powder cannons and powder grenades. While the organizers’ promise that this will lead to “a brighter future, a more dedicated partner, a nicer boss, a healthier life and that you yourself are happy and filled with energy” may be somewhat of an overstatement, you could end up with a new Facebook profile photo and really tired legs. In addition you’ll get a t-shirt, bib, sunglasses, powder grenade and temporary (presumably!) RAD-tattoo. What’s not to like? Where: Holmenkollen National Ski Jump Website: www.colormerad.no Tickets: See website

02

Restaurant Day allows private people to open their own pop up restaurants all over Oslo. Founded in Finland in 2011, this has already become a regular event that is held simultaneously in a number of cities around the world. The “restaurants” can be in people’s homes, in a park, or anywhere suitable. The only rule is that only private people and people that aren’t in the food business can open them. Open one yourself, or visit one for some great food and new friends! Check out the official website to see where the restaurants are, or if you want to register your own. AUG 23 AT 13:00

Red Bull Flugtag Bjørvika At Red Bull Flugtag Bjørvika teams of daredevils will attempt to fly their homemade flying vehicles as far as possible over the water from a ramp by the Opera House. As the history of this event has shown, since the first Flugtag (“flying day” in German) was arranged in Austria in 1991, almost immediate - and sometimes rather spectacular - water crashes have been at least as big a part of the attraction. The flying vehicles can be a sight in themselves, drawing on the ingenuity of (crazy) man and resulting in some rather eccentric constructions. Free Outdoor Movie: My Neighbor Totoro Once a year the movie distribution company Arthaus shows a free movie on a cinema screen in the beautiful park St. Hanshaugen. This year’s movie, the 13th in a row, is a beautiful Japanese animation classic from 1988 called My Neighbor Totoro. Directed by animation legend Hayao Miyazaki, it will be projected from traditional 35mm film format for quality, and to create “that movie feel”. The Arthaus screenings tend to be extremely popular, so get there early to secure a park spot with a good view of the film screen. Also note that as this is a family movie where kids will be present, the movie will be dubbed in Norwegian. Feeling uncool plenty of place today? No worries! Oslo has mojo on by embs where you can get your racing old scho ol cool.

RYES Ryes is a rockabilly-inspired bar and diner at Grünerløkka with décor that is solidly 1950s. The walls are plastered with old American advertisement posters, and furniture and décor that help complete that American diner feel. They also have an almost life-size plastic palm tree in the middle of the dance floor, which is popular with Swing dancers. Music from the 50s and 60s blares from the speakers, and in the daytime they serve hamburgers, American pancakes and milkshakes. Where: Thorvald Meyers gate 59 Website: Facebook: Ryes Age limit: 22

Hang out with cool retro people at Ryes

“Retro”. “Hipster”. “Old School”. “Vintage”.

square glasses, and people with skinny jeans and 80s Polaroid cameras.

What do these terms have in common? They’re all about living in the past in a decidedly modern fashion. They’re about borrowing from the past to be cool in the present. They’re about nostalgic dreams and cutting edge hipness.

Sometimes combinations of the above and more, all in one glorious human package.

Oslo has increasingly thrown itself onto the retro wave sweeping over parts of the western world. Take a stroll around town – particularly the hip Grünerløkka area - and you may encounter people dressed in flowery 60s and 70s vintage hippie clothes, 50s Rockabilly types with leather jackets and Elvis Presley haircuts, hipster guys with chequered shirts and solid beards lumberjack style, intellectual hipsters/hippies with polo neck jumpers and

It’s possible to examine this phenomenon in many ways; for instance with incisive analyses of why it is so and what this love of the past says about modern society. But let’s face it, what really matters is: How the heck can we get a slice of this cool pie? And with that, let us welcome you to our guide to some of Oslo’s retro haunts, with shops, bars, cafés and hangouts that replace the “f” in “fool” with a solid “c”.

*

Get a taste of American retro at Nighthawk Diner!

NIGHTHAWK DINER Nighthawk Diner at Grünerløkka is a diner that looks exactly like a classic American diner looks in your head. The owners have gone to great lengths to create that feel, importing much of the hand-crafted furniture and décor from the US. Even some of the food is imported from the US, and the menu is thoroughly Americana. A highlight is their classy jukebox. Slick your hair with some brylcreem and step right into the past. Where: Seilduksgata 15 Website: www.nighthawkdiner.no

FRØKEN DIANAS SALONGER

*

Dive into glamorous retro dresses at Frøken Dianas Salonger

This well-renowned vintage clothes store at Grünerløkka sells hand-picked, custom designed and mostly used clothes. Their inventory includes items from the 1800s, 50s/60s, and a bit from the 80s, and encompasses clothes both from Norway and abroad. In addition to clothes they sell jewelry, as well as furniture and decorative items. Where: Markveien 56 Website: www.frokendianassalonger.no

RUTH 66 This is a wonderful Grünerløkka-store that specializes in selling mainly Americana from the 1950s, right up to the 1990s. It’s an eccentric place filled with retro accessories, clothes and furniture, as well as kitschy knickknacks like plastic flamingoes and garden gnomes. Even if you don’t want to buy something, Ruth 66 is well worth a visit just to soak in the atmosphere and be blinded by the garish colours. Where: Torshovgata 3 Website: www.ruth66.no

Enjoy the relaxing retro atmosphere at famous coffee bar Fuglen

FUGLEN Fuglen is an ever-so-slightly famous coffee bar which has won high praise and been recommended by The New York Times for its world class coffees and Scandinavian décor from the 1950s and 60s. Fuglen is retro in itself as it has been around since 1963, but has really come into its own in the 2000s. The owners have even opened a second Fuglen in Tokyo (how hipster of them!). This is arguably the most “in-the-know” coffee bar you can visit in Oslo. Most of the inventory here is also for sale, from the retro chairs and tables to the plates. In the evening Fuglen turns into a classic American “speakeasy” cocktail bar. Where: Universitetsgata 2 Website: www.fuglen.no

KULTURHUSET Kulturhuset at Youngstorget covers a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar, ping pong table and shuffle boards. This is sort of like a cultural centre for hipsters, with bearded guys and lumberjack shirts a common occurence. It tends to be packed on weekends, and is a great place to hang out if you want to be cool in a bigger space than the other bars in this guide.

LIEBLING If you venture to the top of Grünerløkka you should check out Liebling; a trendy yet cozy café and shop with retro products. Liebling is based around the owners’ fascination with Berlin, and a lot of the cool stuff they sell has been imported from Germany. This is also the place to get film for your Polaroid camera. In the summer they have a biergarten called St. Pauli (the name of a German “cult” football club). It really doesn’t get much more hipster than Berlin, so what are you waiting for? Where: Øvrefoss 4 Website: www.liebling.no

IZAKAYA IZAKAYA at St. Hanshaugen is a pub inspired by informal Japanese drinking establishments of the same name, and offers liquid delights such as sake and shochu. The bartenders tend to be extremely knowledgeable about Japan and you can spend ages discussing Japanese plum wine with them. They also serve authentic Japanese, Korean and Chinese food. The walls are adorned with Japanese kitschy retro posters, and taken together with the generally funky interior and the fact that Japan is thoroughly hip; this is an essential stopover for cool cats. Where: St. Olavs gate 7 Website: www.izakayaoslo.com

BILLIE BANGS BARBERSHOP & BEAUTY BAR This is a hairdressing salon at Grünerløkka that specializes in haircuts from the 1940s, 50s and 60s (although catering to all tastes). It is one of the essential places in Oslo for people that want a cut to make James Dean, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe proud. The décor, furniture and employees naturally stick to the same look. Where: Rathkes gate 2 Website: Facebook: Billie Bangs Barbershop & Beauty Bar

ANGEL’S SPEED EQUIPMENT Angel’s - called “Engle” by locals in the know - is an essential Grünerløkka shop for retro mojo aspirants. It has, as they point out on their Facebook page, been “Givin’ you cool stuff since ’99. You rock”. Angel’s Speed Equipment is frequented by the same kind of 1950s-oriented souls that hang out at places like Ryes and Billie Bangs Barbershop & Beauty bar. A shop stuck in a time warp and packed with rockin’ men’s and women’s clothes and accessories.

Where: Rathkes gate 7 Website: www.engle.no

PARKTEATRET Bar and concert stage Parkteatret is equally popular with hipsters and, judging by how packed it tends to be, pretty much everyone else. This has long been one of the most frequented and well known bars at Grünerløkka, with prime position beside the central park Olaf Ryes plass. Parkteatret was a cinema on the same premises from 1907 until 1991, and got the name Parkeatret in the early 1920s. The neon Parkteatret-sign still there today is from the 1960s. It has been a bar and stage since 2002, and the art-deco furniture and effects inside are faithful to the original interior. Where: Olaf Ryes plass 11 Website: www.parkteatret.no

TILT While this bar in the city centre, like many other places in this guide, has elements of the 1950s, mainly Tilt is the obvious place to go if you long for the 1980s. It is thoroughly focused on games, with 10 working pinball machines from the 80’s and 90’s and playable arcade games like Space Invaders, Pacman and Donkey Kong integrated into the tables. They also have no less than 6 shuffle boards (shuffle boards are 22 feet long, so that is no small feat). Game over!

Get that cozy cabbin feeling while listening to vinyl records at Hytta

Can’t get enough cool? Here are some more places! HYTTA Hytta is a small new bar at Grünerløkka that has a cozy feel to it. And indeed the name "Hytta" is colloquial Norwegian for "the cabin", referring to a most Norwegian tradition - holiday cabins in the forest. To complete that rustic vibe they only play vinyl records, and the owner infuses their vodka with different herbs and other sources of added flavour. In other words: This

place is so old fashioned it's cool by default. Where: Thorvald Meyers gate 70 Website: Facebook: Hytta Bar

JULIPS This is a photo and design bureau specializing in the aesthetics of the 1940s-60s through the styling of people, interiors and photos. Julips also offers themed bachelor parties.

BLOMSTERHANDLER ANDERSEN

Bar Boca may be Oslo’s tiniest bar, and is yet another essential retro stopover with its tasteful 50s/60s interior, professional bartenders and great drinks.

A retro florists! Buy your flowers at a place where the proprietor looks like Elvis Presley and the clock on the wall always has the date 1950. It’s easy to spot, with a Ford Pickup 1956-modell parked outside.

AKU AKU TIKI BAR

HELL’S KITCHEN

This retro kitsch bar has the “colours and feelings of the islands of Micronesia, the mystery of the caves of Easter Island”. It also has awesome and much heralded drinks.

A trendy little pizzeria at Youngstorget with a sort-of-1950s-60s feel, including rows of leather booths for seating, a classy wooden bar desk and retro lamps. Also check out Illegal Burger next door.

ÅPENT BAKERI For a retro breakfast or lunch, drop by this bakery at Torshov which has tried to recreate the original 1920s façade and has a somewhat 1950s interior. In the afternoon/evening they turn it into a well renowned pizzeria called Lofthus Samvirkelag. Where: Åsengata 42 Website: www.apenbakeri.no

TEDDY’S SOFTBAR A small bar and café at Grønland that opened way back in 1958 and that has kept its original interior. It has a Wurlitzer jukebox from the same period and is a genuine retro place. Also cheaper beer than the “new” retro bars.

Where: Møllergata 23 Website: None

ILLEGAL BURGER Charcoal grilled gourmet burgers with attitude and, according to many, the best burgers in town. If you’re hip and love burgers, this retro-ish place is a no-brainer. Right next to Hell’s Kitchen. Where: Møllergata 23 Website: Facebook: Illegal Burger

CAFÉ LAUNDROMAT Our only west-Oslo place on the list (by Bislett Stadium), Café Laundromat has a cozy and generally retro interior, one of Oslo’s largest private libraries (over 4000 books and comics), and most hipster-like of all: You can do your laundry here while eating your lunch. Where: Underhaugsveien 2 Website: www.laundromat.no

– bartender at retro bar and diner Ryes: I am really fond of Hytta [see our main retro article]. This was a run-down place that was so old that it almost should have been listed as a heritage site. Now it has been refurbished and when you go inside you get a bit of that holiday cabin feel. Feel the walls as well – the wall paper is made of recycled cardboard.

– sales clerk at vintage store Frøken Dianas salonger: I think Frøken Dianas salonger are completely wonderful. I haven’t really found a match anywhere in Europe. Other than that I think [retro store and café] Retrolykke [in Markveien 33] are cool. Very pleasant service, cool products, a nice menu and good coffee.

32

– waitress at old school Americanadiner Nighthawk Diner: I love Aku Aku Tiki Bar [see our main retro article], with their “tiki” atmosphere [“tiki” properly refers to a New Zealand Mãori legend, but here means a more general traditional Polynesian style of art]. They also have a really awesome chili punch that you have to tell your readers about!

– owner of retro store Angel’s Speed Equipment: Teddy’s Softbar [see our main retro article], because there are so many different kinds of people there.

– bartender at Hytta: Café Mir [a creative bar in Toftes gate 69 with airplane seats, concerts and table football], because it’s so well conceptualized and soulful and eclectic - a place that shouldn’t really be able to survive, but which does because the people there are so fantastic and motivated; always fighting. We live in a culture that is more and more gentrified and capitalistic, and where the artists and alternative people often fall by the wayside. But Mir survives.

Go Green in Oslo’s Parks *

Frognerparken is a must-see for everyone!

Did you know: As the city expanded in the middle of the 19th century, areas were appropriated for parks and recreational purposes. The eastern part of the city (Østkanten) was prioritized due to congestion and industrialization. The residential and more affluent western parts of the city (Majorstuen, Frogner) have comparably fewer parks and open spaces, but can also boast Frognerparken – the city’s most famous park with the Vigeland Sculpture Park inside. 95% of the city's inhabitants have a park or an open green space within 300 meters of their home. You are in the Capital of Culture and Nature, and this guide shows you one of the easiest ways to get your nature fix - the city’s wonderful parks! Oslo’s parks have everything from great spots for picnics and cozy hideaways for lazy days in the sun, to famous sculptures and lush plant life. And while the Oslo region is surrounded by beautiful forests, beaches and islands, the parks are dotted across town, and seldom far away.

FROGNERPARKEN (main entrance in Kirkeveien) is the biggest park in central Oslo. It is a very popular recreational area and on a nice summers day it is full of people. Here you can go for a run, walk the dog, have a picnic or barbecue, play badminton or just do some sunbathing. Frogner Stadium and Frogner Open-Air Bath is located in one corner of the park, towards Majorstuen. In the corner by Frogner plass, you find the Frogner Manor House and Oslo City Museum. As a part of Frognerparken, you will also find Vigelandsparken (Vigeland Sculpture Park), Oslo’s most visited attraction. Frognerparken has a summer-open café and

a restaurant. And for the youngest, you will find Norway’s biggest playground (between the main gates and Frogner Manor House).

THE BOTANICAL GARDEN at Kampen in east Oslo is an ideal place to relax and get away from the stress of the inner city. Here you can enjoy a botanical diversity not found anywhere else in Oslo, with about 7500 plant species (some of which are endangered), greenhouses, gardens with particular themes, and the many bushes and trees in The Arboretum. The garden has a picnic area and a small and cozy summertime café in the building called Tøyen hovedgård.

TIP:

Relax in-between shopping at Birkelunden

Oslo’s biggest music festival Øyafestivalen (oyafestivalen.no) will be held in Tøyenparken Aug 11-15.

ST. HANSHAUGEN PARK lies centrally within the borough that shares the same name – St. Hanshaugen. From the top of the hill you will have a fantastic view of Oslo, which for a long time was its biggest attraction. The park was planted in the years 1876-86; it has a pavilion and a reflecting pool covering a reservoir and an open air restaurant.

KAMPEN PARK is a shady and charming little park that lies on the east side of town. With a magnificent view and small pools it’s great for children. It’s not far from the Munch museum, so if you are on this side of town, take the opportunity to see Oslo from a different perspective.

STENSPARKEN At Fagerborg, just a few minutes’ walk from Bislet, Stensparken is a small but beautiful park behind the church. With a small playground for children, a little pool and ”Blåsen”, which is 81 meters above sea level and known as the highest peak of Oslo’s inner city, this little gem is well worth visiting.

BIRKELUNDEN At Grünerløkka, between St. Paul’s Church (Paulus kirken) and Grünerløkka School, you’ll find Birkelunden, officially protected as a park since 2006. A music pavilion, a small pool and lots of events and activites make this park a well-known and popular haunt.

54

SOFIENBERGPARKEN at Grünerløkka, dating from 1858, was originally Oslo’s cemetery and at that time outside the city-limits. The area became a public park in 1972 and is a popular spot to enjoy hot summer days – especially for young people. Here you’ll also find a great playground for children.

SLOTTSPARKEN surrounds Oslo’s Royal Palace and was built during the 1840s. It is characterized by its many majestic trees, well-kept lawns and beautiful ponds. It is also home to significant sculptures,

including Gustav Vigeland’s statues of the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel and author Camilla Collett. Despite its royal affiliations, the park is a popular recreational area, and it even served as a base for Oslo’s hippies in the mid 1960s.

TJUVHOLMEN SCULPTURE PARK

sculptures by renowned artists, has fantastic views of the city, as well as beautiful forested parkland steeped in cultural history.

HUNDESLETTA/ RIDESLETTA

The Astrup Fearnley Museum at Tjuvholmen is flanked by Tjuvholmen Sculpture park, designed by renowned museum architect Renzo Piano. It has canals, lawns and a little beach attached, and several sculptures on outdoor display. The sculptures are the creations of contemporary artists Louise Bourgeois, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Ellsworth Kelly, Ugo Rondinone, and Franz West. They are very different in form and expression, and are suited for both contemplation and climbing.

Technically part of Ekebergparken, but deserving of a separate mention, are Hundesletta and Ridesletta. Hundesletta means “The Dog Plain”, as this is a popular place for people walking and training their dogs. At the top of Hundesletta a staircase leads up to Ridesletta. Ridesletta means “The Riding Plain”, and is used for horse riding. However, both these areas are open to everyone, are surrounded by forest and have a beautiful view of the fjord far below. This is often a peaceful park that gives you the feeling of truly being in nature – even though you are just a few minutes away from the city by public transport.

Kontraskjæret near Akershus Fortress is a popular park often used to gather people at concerts or other big events.

TIP: Several of the islands with parks and beaches in the Oslo fjord can, depending on your location and timing, be visited just as fast as some of the parks in the city itself. From Aker Brygge you can use your public transport ticket to catch a ferry, with the shortest trip taking about 10 minutes. A short bus trip will also take you to the forests surrounding parts of Oslo, for instance by Sognsvann and Maridalsvannet.

from historical buildings to the river itself, swimming spots, waterfalls, and indeed the many small parks along stretches of the river. The upper parts of the park, near the source of the river, also have forested areas.

TORSHOVPARKEN is a park slightly north east of the city centre in the area called Torshov. It’s a large park on a mound, with views of the city centre and Oslo fjord from the top. There is also a stylish old bandstand at the top of Torshovparken, and a pretty pond elsewhere in the park.

swimming pools and one outdoor pool. There is also a relatively big football pitch with artificial turf.

BOTSPARKEN (also known as Grønlands park and Fengselsparken) is a park that surrounds parts of Oslo Prison and Grønland Police Station in the Grønland borough in eastern Oslo. It’s a simple park with a grass lawn, and surrounded by trees and buildings. A nice place to lay back and relax on a sunny day if you are in the area.

TØYENPARKEN

KONTRASKJÆRET

is a park right beside Akershus Fortress in the city centre. It has beautiful views of the fjord, Aker Brygge and Oslo City Hall. As well as Kontraskjæret, there are green spaces on top of the fortress itself with even better views of the Oslo fjord and Aker brygge.

GREV WEDELS PLASS A small but pretty park in the middle of the area of the city centre called “Kvadraturen”, and bordered by handsome historical buildings. Paths lead from each corner of the park to a fountain in the middle. There are also trees and bushes here. This hidden gem is quite a relaxing park in elegant surroundings.

KUBAPARKEN is a park on both sides of the Akerselva river, immediately north of the Vulkan area where Norway’s first food hall Mathallen lies. The river can be crossed by two bridges in the park. As well as a popular place for sunbathing and picnicking, Kubaparken has a café bar in a small, cozy factory building from 1924, as well as a circular concrete area used for concerts and other events. At the northernmost point of the park the Akerselva river tumbles down as a waterfall (best seen by following the road up above the fall).

BYGDØY is a natural park. It is a beautiful peninsula some distance west of the city centre with large forested areas, some picturesque farmland, several beaches (the most popular are Huk and Paradisbukta), and many villas belonging to Bygdøy’s often wealthy inhabitants.

ILADALEN PARK is a park slightly north of the city centre, a minutes’ walk from Alexander Kiellands plass. It is a simple park consisting of a large grass lawn, some small hills, and with trees dotting parts of the landscape. The park is surrounded by apartment buildings on three sides, and is a popular place for families and children living in the local area. The northern part of the park has a church, as well as a playground.

ALEXANDER KIELLANDS PLASS Alexander Kiellands plass is a narrow and long park that slopes downhill a little bit, with a water fountain and a reflecting pool in the shape of a stream that snakes its way downhill. There can be quite a bit of traffic on two bordering streets. However, as restaurants place out lots of outdoor tables and chairs in one corner of Alexander Kiellands plass, and as it has some of the longest lasting evening sun in this part of town, it is a popular place to relax with a drink, some food, or both.

OLAF RYES PLASS This is a small park located in the liveliest part of Grünerløkka. Olaf Ryes plass has two diagonal walkways running through it, a fountain in the middle, and some trees and bushes. This is a very popular park for grilling and hanging out on sunny days, and is generally quite busy due to its location. The park is surrounded by some of the area’s most well-known bars, café’s and eateries, such as Ryes, Parkteatret, Kaffebrenneriet and Villa Paradiso, and is close to many more.

VATERLANDSPARKEN Resting beside the river Akerselva and near the Radisson Plaza hotel and Grønland, Vaterlandsparken is a central park with some grass and trees as well as a concrete square. It is used for quite a lot of activities, and is a handy stopover if you are in this part of the city centre and on the hunt for some quick relaxation.

RÅDHUSHAGEN This is a very small park bordering Oslo City Hall and across the square from the entrance to Aker Brygge. It has bushes, as well as some trees on one side. You can find a bench here and have a little break on your way through the city centre. g

Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. In Oslo Central Station itself, the oldest section of the building originally the station terminal dating to the 1850s – reopened in February 2015 after a little over a year of refurbishments with the name Ø (Jernbanetorget 1 / ostbanehallen.no), an attractive new dining and shopping area, which also has a hotel and Oslo Visitor Centre (the new tourist information office).

While souvenirs of course can be anything that reminds you of this place and your trip, around the city centre there are places that make it easy for you. GETTING STARTED: At the new Oslo Visitor Centre (Jernbanetorget 1), next to Oslo Central station, you will also find Oslo Gift Shop (ostbanehallen.no/ butikk/oslo-gift-shop), where you can buy classic souvenir items like trolls, lusekofte, wollen socks and much more. Meanwhile, two souvenir shops can be found near Oslo City Hall. These are Norway Shop (Fridtjof Nansens plass 9 / norwayshop.com), a big store that sells Norwegian knitwear, gifts and souvenirs, and Holm – Souvenirs & Sweaters (Hieronymus Heyerdalsgate 1 / thv-holm.no), which sells a lots of headwear for all occasions, as well as sweaters from Dale of Norway, and various souvenirs and gifts. Oslo Sweater Shop in Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel (Holbergs gate 30 / sweater.no) as well as in Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania (Biskop Gunnerus’ gate 3 / sweater. no) has the country’s largest selection of Norwegian sweaters as well as many other souvenirs. And once you’ve been to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, why not drop by the Vigeland Visitors’ Centre (Frognerveien 67) just inside the main gates of the park, where you can pick up even more souvenirs.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

What: Language Champ Norwegian school Where: Bislett (see website for details) Prices: Cheap Website: www.languagechamp.com

It’s no secret that the key to really getting ahead in a country is to learn the local language. From getting a job or applying for permanent residency, to talking to people and really understanding local culture, learning the language in your new country is essential. Unfortunately, so many people speak great English in Oslo that learning Norwegian can be quite a challenge! This is where Language Champ takes over. They began offering courses a few months ago, and have already made a name for themselves with quality Norwegian courses that take only 6 weeks per level. So far they are teaching three beginner levels that together cover the official curriculum book “På vei”.

GREAT PRICES At only 2990 kroner per course (and a huge discount if you sign up someone else after you), the school takes pride in low prices.

Language Champ’s Norwegian courses are anything from 1000 to several thousand kroners cheaper than many similar competitors. They cleverly keep the prices down by not having their own school building, instead renting classrooms in a school in the area. Offering evening courses that make it possible to combine work and studies, the classes are conveniently located near Bislett Stadium right in the city centre. Time to learn Norwegian? Visit the website languagechamp.com, take a look at their courses and sign up now!

Classy haircuts at retro hairdressers Billie Bangs.

68

OSLO PEOPLE Who: Pia Eriksen, chief hairdresser and co-owner (together with Christian Spro) of hairdresser Billie Bangs Barbershop & Beauty Bar, specializing in cuts from the 20s to 60s. Where: Rathkes gate 2 at Grünerløkka. Age: 33. From: Larvik in Vestfold county. Lives at Grünerløkka in Oslo. Interviewed: July 3, by Tarjei Kidd Olsen.

How did you end up opening a 1950s hairdresser specializing in retro cuts? I opened it because of personal interest. I’ve been into in rockabilly music for a long time and I think it’s cool with classic haircuts and clothes styles. First and foremost it was the music that landed me where I am today – lots of rockabilly and 50s and 60s music in general. So, when I attended hairdressing school I decided that I wanted to open a barber shop. I finished the school, convinced my colleague Christian to join me and went for it.

What kind of customers do you have? When we started in 2007 people mostly asked for rock styles, but in recent years underground styles in general have become more popular. People ask for all sort of stuff, but many are into pompadour haircuts from the 50s and 60s – particularly men. In general we are particularly focused on classic haircuts from the 20s to the 60s, plus some that are a bit more modern. We do all kinds of haircuts and colouring though, so you won’t be forced into a particular style. We’ve also been getting more and more customers. In the beginning many people thought the whole thing was a bit eccentric, but after the TVseries Mad Men [about the US advertising business in the early 1960s – ed.] the market has really grown – not least among people working at advertising agencies! Billie Bangs Barbershop and Beauty Bar is a great name for a hairdressing salon. How did you come up with it? Well, the “billy” comes from rockabilly and “bangs” is another name for a hair fringe. The “beauty bar” part is there because I wanted something a bit girlish in the name. And also, I used to DJ quite a lot before I got really busy,

69

and Billie Bangs is my DJ name. Do you follow this whole retro aesthetic in your private life as well? Yes, I do. I’m into both the clothes and furniture styles, but again, first and foremost the music. I go to a lot of rockabilly festivals in places like Sweden and Spain, and they have a huge one in Las Vegas in the US. There’s also a big classic car scene, although

I’m not extremely involved in that. In my apartment I have a lot of teak wood furniture and stuff like that. Basically my flat mirrors what you see in the barbershop, with lots of items from the 50s and 60s. Do you think the retro scene will get bigger or smaller in the future? I actually think it will stay quite stable. I think the interest for vintage and

70

retro things will continue to increase, while the music scene will stay more constant. The aesthetics are nice, after all. Personally speaking I think retro things often have a bit more quality to them and are more stylish. I think people are fed up with “quick things”. You also see it among the gentlemen in recent years; that it’s become more OK with beards and men’s grooming in general. The beard isn’t so 50s maybe – in those days they were more into clean shaves – but that whole interest for grooming is about a slower and more quality approach to life. Do you have any tips for people that want to become part of the retro scene? You can find lots of music online, and if you for instance visit Ryes in Thorvald Meyers gate 59, they have DJs playing rockabilly and 50s and 60s music three times a week.

We have lots of good bars, clothes stores, eateries and what have you here at Grünerløkka. For women’s clothes from the 50s and 60s, I’d recommend Manillusion in Thorvald Meyers gate 44. Frøken Dianas Salonger in Markveien 56 is also good for clothes. Birkelunden Sunday market in the Birkelunden park is a cool place to shop interior design articles. At Angel’s Speed Equipment in Rathkes gate 7 I shop rockabilly clothes for my boyfriend. Tidsrommet, also in Rathkes gate 7, is a great place for used furniture. In fact, you can write that Rathkes gate is a gateway to the lifestyle in general, for here there is furniture, clothes and of course us in Billie Bangs! g

CLUBS &BARS

Oslo’s nightlife is anything but boring. There are countless pubs, bars, clubs and concerts to choose from and the atmosphere is friendly and inviting. @ Mir

72

CITY CENTRE & KARL JOHANS GATE

In the city centre you can move and shake to whatever is most popular at the moment. The area also boasts several jazz and blues clubs. GETTING STARTED: At Oslo’s oldest rock bar Last Train (Karl Johans gate 45 / lasttrain.no), Norwegian and international bands perform on a regular basis. 34 Skybar (Sonja Henies plass 3 / radissonblu.com/plazahotel-oslo/dining/skybar-34), a bar on the 34th floor of Radisson Plaza Blu Hotel behind the Oslo City shopping centre, has large windows with an impressive panoramic view of the city and fjord. Jaeger (Grensen 9 / jaegeroslo.no) is a popular club with electronic music and DJs most nights. Hip IZAKAYA (St. Olavs Gate 7 / izakayaoslo.com) is a Japanese bar with authentic Japanese food and drinks, where enthusiastic bartenders wax lyrical about sake and shochu.

no) is a café in the daytime that turns into a hugely popular (and cramped) bar in the evenings. Bar and concert stage Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11 / parkteatret.no) is equally popular, as is Blå (Brenneriveien 9 / blaaoslo. no) – originally mainly a jazz club in an old riverside factory that also hosts lively DJ-nights and concerts of all kinds. BAR Vulkan (Maridalsveien 17 / www.barsocialeating.no) is a fancy bar known for its tasty cocktails and (in summer) large roof terrace, rockabilly-inspired Ryes (Thorvald Meyers gate 59 / facebook.com/RyesOslo) is a great place for a twirl on the dance floor, Bar Boca (Thorvald Meyers gate 30 / facebook.com/pages/ Bar-Boca/284273994971781?fref=ts) with its tasteful ‘50s/’60s interior has professional bartenders and great drinks, and Schouskjelleren Mikrobryggeri (Trondheimsveien 2 / schouskjelleren.no) is an atmospheric basement micro-brewery with a large selection of beers. Norway’s first food hall Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17

GRÜNERLØKKA

Just northeast of the city centre is Grünerløkka, with active music venues that make concerts an important part of the borough’s nightlife. Many of the area’s popular cafés turn into hot spots in the evening, and this is one of the most popular areas for partygoers in general and hipsters in particular. GETTING STARTED: Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40 / fruhagen.

/ mathallenoslo.no) has a number of interesting bars, including Smelteverket (smelteverketoslo.no) with the city’s longest bar disk, great food and mini concerts.

GRØNLAND

Grønland on the east side of town offers a refreshing blend of friendly and laidback clubs with varied music offerings, as well as slightly ragged bars with some of the cheapest beer in town.

73

© BAR Tjuvholmen

GETTING STARTED: Dattera til Hagen (Grønland 10 / dattera.no) is a colourful bar and café with two floors and a big, charming backyard. Ivars kro (Grønland 14 / ivarskro.no) is a pianobar with live music every night and a large bar with a good selection of drinks, while Oslo Mekaniske Verksted (Tøyenbekken 34 / oslomekaniskeverksted.no) is a big and cozy bar/pub with a big fireplace, board games, comfy sofas - and a theatre in the same building. Caféteatret (Hollendergata 8 / cafeteatret.no) is a multicultural bar, concert and theatre stage that includes popular open stage nights, and Pigalle (Grønlandsleiret 15 / olympen.no) features a mostly original ‘60s interior and music from the ‘60s and ‘70s.

crowd, with local and international DJs and genres such as house, techno and dub step. In the basement of the bar Revolver (Møllergata 32 / revolveroslo. no) young crowds dance the night away to 80s pop, rock and disco. Cafe Sør (Torggata 11 / cafesor.no) is another very popular place with nice drinks and great music, as well as the relatively low age limit of 20 (22 after midnight on weekends). Angst Bar (Torggata 11 / facebook.com/pages/ ANGST-BAR/210106519005748) is a bar in a passageway called Strøget which is hip, intimate, with great music and lots of art on the walls (also backyard parties during weekends).

YOUNGSTORGET

In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places with a more alternative/rock-oriented music profile, as well as a couple of clubs devoted to electronic music. GETTING STARTED: Kulturhuset (Youngstorget 3 / kulturhusetioslo.no) covers a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar and shuffle board. Café Mono (Pløens gate 4 / cafemono.no) is a dark and relaxed bar/pub/concert stage that plays a lot of rock, alternative rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2 / internasjonalen.no), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25 / thevilla.no), Fisk & Vilt (Pløens gate 4 / fiskogvilt.no) and Turkish Delight (Torggata 35 / turkish. no) appeal to the electronic music

AKER BRYGGE & TJUVHOLMEN

Along the waterfront at Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen you will meet tourists, business people, everyday locals and the wealthy. This is a great place to go

for relatively upmarket food, pubbing and clubbing, and a summer drink at one of the slick waterfront bars with beautiful views of the ocean. GETTING STARTED: BAR Tjuvholmen (Bryggegangen 6 / barsocialeating. no) is a stylish and popular bar and restaurant on the waterfront in Oslo’s newest completed neighbourhood, and a great place for cocktails. Drink in style in Tjuvholmen’s only hotel bar at

Monkey Bar Oslo (Henrik Ibsens gate 60B / facebook.com/MONKEYoslo), Nox (Henrik Ibsens gate 100 / clubnox. no) and Soliis Bar & Lounge (Henrik Ibsens gate 90 / soliis.no) are popular nightspots on and near Solli Plass. designer hotel The Thief (Landgangen 1 / thethief.com). Beer Palace (Holmens gate 3 / beerpalace.no) is located in the oldest building at Aker Brygge, and their motto is that everyone likes beer, but not everyone has found a type they like yet. And why not head over to Jacob Aall Brasserie & Bar Aker Brygge (Stranden 63 / jacobaall.no), where you can sip on some exotic drinks.

FROGNER & MAJORSTUA

The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying. Drinks are pricier, the dress code stricter, and the see and be seen factor is higher. Guys in suits and girls in glittering dresses are not an uncommon sight. GETTING STARTED: Enjoy sparkling wines and tapas at Champagneria (Frognerveien 2 / champagneria.com), great cocktails at BAR Bygdøy Allé (Bygdøy allé 18 / barsocialeating.no), or shake it on the dance floor at popular Skaugum (Solligata 2 / palacegrill.no/ skaugum) bar and (at weekends) club. Trendy club VU (Hegdehaugsveien 24 /

no) is a two floor classic where young and old rub shoulders in rustic and spacious surroundings, while Oslo Mikrobryggeri (Bogstadveien 6 / omb. no) has its own brewery, and super tasty – you guessed it – beer.

FIND YOUR WAY AROUND Check out VisitOSLO’s phone app “Oslo – Official City App”, a travel guide which includes updated information about things to get up to, or check out their website at www.visitoslo. com. You can also read What’s On Oslo online at www.whatsonoslo.no. Other great places to find events are: www.osloby.no/oslopuls, tjenester.nettavisen.no/kundeweb/ dittoslo/kalender/ and www.underskog.no (which are all in Norwegian). TripAdvisor has a section on activities in Oslo in English. Of course, the best way to find out what’s going on is often to check out the venues’ own websites, or by asking fellow night owls.

On the metro, tickets must be purchased before entering the train. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines and ticket offices at the metro stations, Oslo Visitor Centre, Østbanehallen, Jernbanetorget 1, in kiosks including Narvesen, 7-Eleven and Deli de Luca, and at Ruter’s Service Centre at Jernbanetorget (in front of Oslo Central Station).

METRO (T-BANE) Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All branch lines and the ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jernbanetorget (Oslo Central Station).

BUS Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station. Many of the most popular bus routes are cross connections, including 20, which passes both the Munch Museum and the Vigeland Park.
