DEAR READER
Keeping What’s On updated at all times is what makes this guide worth publishing. If we happen to have incorrect information about places, sites or happenings, please let us know. What’s On accepts no responsibility for any errors or alterations. Editing completed 20.12.2014 Always updated on What’s On in Oslo!
With its 1000 year old history, Oslo is the oldest of the Nordic capitals. The city, surrounded by islands and forested hills, is situated at the end of one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. From the Viking age until today, people have looked to this place as a safe haven for trade, industry and cultural enrichment. Today, Oslo has a population of 600.000 inhabitants, and is the nation’s financial, political and cultural centre. Allow yourself the time to wander in the city’s streets, parks, forests or along the fjord, and get a feel for the capital’s abundant history in its character. Oslo is the capital of the changing seasons. The surrounding countryside makes its mark on the city’s inhabitants and buildings and the people’s rhythm and life-style changes with the weather. You will be able to discover a city which is full of life all year round, both in the narrow streets and in the vast forests. Oslo is a city of variation and contrast. Oslo is also Munch’s and Ibsen’s city. The art and cultural life reflect the fact that the inhabitants of Oslo come from all over the country and from all parts of the World. The city can offer unique sights and meaningful experiences, many of which are presented in this guide. Useful information may be found at www.visitoslo.com, or at our tourist information centre by the City Hall, open every day all year round. On behalf of Oslo we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors, promising an exciting and surprising experience. Welcome to Oslo!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome to What’s On Oslo in January and February 2015 - the start of a fresh year with fresh possibilities! With the Christmas holidays over and a new year starting, January and February is when many newly rested and inspired people like to try new projects, learn new things and improve themselves. At the same time people’s jobs are often in a relatively calm phase as work projects haven’t fully geared up yet, allowing a window of tranquility and self-discipline to test out these new ideas. The great thing about this is that now you have a golden opportunity to start learning salsa or guitar, get into shape or quit smoking, for instance. The other good thing is that in this spirit of general self-pampering, we’ve locked our biggest spa-enthusiasts in a room to thrash out a list of their favourite Oslo spas for you to try out. You want to renew yourself – and its cold outside. That is a great excuse for treating yourself to a Turkish bath, massage, skin treatment routine, or any other of the dreamy delights you can find in these places. Of course, not everyone’s year begins calmly, and in this issue we introduce you to one such group of people: Professional athletes! Biathletes to be precise, as we tell you what you need to know about the biathlon world cup that is taking place in Oslo in February. Like other elite athletes, the ones competing in this intense skiing and rifle shooting sport have to train huge amounts, travel lots and compete lots – and the beginning of the year is definitely no trip to the spa. In this month’s portrait interview, we get an interesting insight into this ambitious world from one of the professional biathletes that will take part in the world cup. We also give you a great guide to winter sports you can try out yourself (regardless of whether your New Year’s resolution is to become an Olympian or not). We appeal to the materialist in you with a guide to the amazing new shopping centres that have popped up recently, and we of course give you our popular regular guides to events and services all over town. Enjoy! What’s On Oslo team

Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen Do you come from a sporty family? Yes, I would say so. When we were young we tried lots of different sports; everything from orienteering to football and skiing. I’ve tried most things! Have you considered why it is that you are so ambitious? Where does this extreme focus come from? People always have the goal of developing themselves and seeing progress. One is always trying to see if one can get good in something – and that’s something that’s true for sports as in all other things in life. But it takes a certain kind of discipline and focus to be an elite athlete? Yes, we do invest our whole lives into a specific activity, you could say. In regards to biathlon, it’s about being able to do something we enjoy. I appreciate being able to do this at such a high level. How is life as part of the elite in biathlon? It’s about a lot of training during the summer, and training and competitions during the winter, interspersed with rest periods. And there’s a lot of travelling of course. So I’m a 24/7-athlete, but it’s great fun to be out travelling - especially considering the kind of team we are. You never get tired of it all? Ha ha, no! Not when doing something that I like this much. Of course, some days it’s less exiting to go out and train than other days, but the goals that lie ahead motivate you. What do you like the most about biathlon? It’s the combination of doing a physically demanding sport and the uncertainty element inherent in biathlon which means that things can turn fast, for instance if you make a mistake during the shooting stage. You have to be good at both shooting and skiing. You’re competing in the world cup right now, with your first competition in Östersund tomorrow. What is your schedule for the world cup? We travel for three weeks at a time. One week in Östersund now, then one week in Austria and one in Slovenia. Then we take a short trip home for Christmas, and then we
go to Germany and Italy. And in February we have the Oslo-part of the world cup. You’re also aiming for the biathlon world championships in Oslo in 2016? Yes, that’s the big slightly longer term goal at the moment. You got your first Winter Olympics medal in Sochi (Russia) last February. How did that feel? It was a really great feeling. We took bronze in the relay race, so it was great to get it together with the girls you practice with year round, and in such a big setting. Are you aiming for more medals at the biathlon world championships? Yes, of course! Both individual medals for me and relay medals with the rest of the women’s team, where we’re aiming for at least picking up the gold. We’re a young team with many enthusiastic girls and it can be a close call, but I hope that we’ll be able to prove that we’re up to the challenge. It will also be cool if we manage to recreate some of the great atmosphere from the Oslo skiing world championships in 2011. I suppose biathlon gets a bit less attention than cross country skiing? In Norway cross country skiing has stronger traditions, but in the world at large biathlon is just as popular - if not more. How long do you think you’ll continue competing in biathlon? It’s hard to say. As long as the motivation is there and I feel I’m making progress. I feel privileged to be able to do this, but of course to be able to do this you have to create results, so we’ll see. Do you have other interests in life, or is it all about biathlon? I have many other interests! It’s about having to prioritize certain things to be able to be an elite athlete, but I love the outdoors, Telemark skiing, hunting animals, and I enjoy tidying, cooking and all sorts of things, really. You don’t get many chances to cook your own food now, I assume? No, we have a cook with us when we’re out travelling – we’re a little spoiled.

Conor Patrick & The Shooting Tsar Supp.: Andrew Combs (US). He is the son of Steve Earle, and got his middle name from his godfather, and his father’s mate; Townes Van Zandt himself. As if the name isn’t impressive enough, he has a particularly potent musical career to his credit. Singlehandedly he has built up a devoted fan base with his blend of blues, roots and country music, and his close proximity to the audience during concerts.
The trance heroes in Above & Beyond are strongly focused on making sure that the audience feels like a part of the experience. They have often both dragged people up on stage to play and to see how the band works. The cohesion between the band and the fans mean that they have achieved a connection that is rarely seen especially in electronic music today.

A self-described “pop” band, their music is primarily influenced by the ‘60s British Invasion movement and post-punk revival of the new millennium. PEER GYNT: OPERA Few works have so embodied what it means to be Norwegian as Ibsen’s Peer Gynt. Not only is it a key work in the Norwegian literary canon, it is also one of Ibsen’s most frequently performed plays on the international theatre stage. Grieg’s setting of Ibsen’s text is still Norway’s best known dramatic music. But what does this legacy mean for us today? Estonian composer Jüri Reinvere explores this question in a completely new Peer Gynt. This is not an operatic version of Ibsen’s dramatic verse play, but a new interpretation, with Reinvere providing both the music and libretto. In his Peer Gynt, Ibsen’s characters

ROMEO AND JULIET BALLET Romeo and Juliet is one of the most frequently performed classical ballets. It allows the dancers to appear at their best in strong character roles such as Mercutio, Tybalt and Benvolio – not to mention the star-crossed lovers themselves, Romeo and Juliet. The Norwegian National Ballet’s version is created by British choreographer Michael Corder. He feels that not only is Romeo and Juliet one of the world’s most beautiful love stories, but also a kind of Godfather-story about two families that hate each other: “Shakespeare’s text and Prokofiev’s wonderful music create something reminiscent of a mafia drama”. Guns and Skis
This is your chance to see many of the world’s top biathletes in this dramatic sport’s home country!
Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen
In February the BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon takes place in Holmenkollen, pitting about 35 nations against each other in one mighty clash that organizers hope will live up to Norway’s reputation for amazing winter sports events. They hardly need to worry. Thousands of spectators will descend on the new and much praised Holmenkollen sporting complex, in none other than the ski-crazy country where biathlon was invented back in the 1700s. Biathlon, known as “skiskyting” in Norwegian (literally “ski shooting”), is a race where the athletes ski around a cross-country trail, with two to four breaks for shooting at targets. Half of the shooting rounds are in prone position and the other half in standing position. The shooting performance determines how much
time or extra distance will be added to the contestant’s total running time/distance.
HIGH DRAMA At the World Cup in Holmenkollen, held from Feb 12th to 15th, all the action happens in the stadium area. You can choose between seating in different parts of the arena and pay extra for more amenities. - The drama at the biathlon stadium is at its highest and best when it’s experienced up close and shared with others, Per Bergerud from Oslo2016 points out in his pitch to potential stadium spectators in What’s On Oslo. Oslo2016 is the organizational committee for the February 2016 Biathlon World Championship, which will also take place in Holmenkollen.

For many Norwegians the World Cup in Holmenkollen this February is seen as a kind of test run before that championship. However, before that there is also a World Championship in Kontiolahti in Finland in March this year. - The World Cup-leg in Holmenkollen is the last international contest before the World Championship in Kontiolahti. People will be watching closely to see who’s most ahead in preparations for the championship, and what we can expect from the Norwegian athletes, Bergerud tells What’s On Oslo.
THE KING OF BIATHLON The entire elite of Norway’s biathlon world are going to take part in the World Cup in February. That includes Ole Einar Bjørndalen, also known as “The King of Biathlon”. Bjørndalen is the most medaled Olympian in the history of the Winter Olympic
Games – and the most successful biathlete of all time at the Biathlon World Cup. There will be plenty of other Norwegian stars to follow as well, as the ambitious men and women of the Norwegian teams seek to maintain Norway’s position as the world’s number one winter sports destination. In fact, in this issue’s portrait interview we talk to one of these, a super-disciplined 26 year old girl with one goal in mind: Getting medals at the Cup and getting people fired up about biathlon. The World Cup in Holmenkollen in other words looks sure to live up to the Norwegian reputation for awesome winter sports celebrations, with ecstatic fans and fantastic achievements. Shop ’til you drop Last year saw several existing shopping centres in Oslo reopen in modernized versions, with a number of ambitious new outlets and concepts. In addition a raft of other shopping centres have opened or expanded in recent years. Here we show you where you need to go if you’re itching for a shopping spree or just want to browse longingly!
LUXURY AND GLITZ
Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen
217 YEARS OF SHOPPING Not as upmarket as Eger, but still with a rather trendy profile, Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / www.steenogstrommagasin.no) has many fashionable, well-known and upmarket Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. Opening in 1797, this is the country’s oldest shopping centre by far.
If you’re looking for a pure high end, luxury kind of shopping experience, Eger Karl Johan (Karl Johans gate 23 / egerkarljohan.no) is the place to check out. Opening in 2009 and calling itself “Norway’s biggest high end fashion house”, Eger is a boutique centre with over 300 exclusive international brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney and Michael Kors.
Steen & Strøm is no dusty relic from the past however, having maintained their position as one of the country’s premier shopping places. And so in November they re-launched themselves yet again, this time with lots of new stores and a large, brand new food court with tempting and imaginative dishes from many corners of the world.
Eger is a place which attracts wealthy locals both from Norway and abroad. If you can afford it, this truly is a mecca for luxury and glitz.
CONCEPT STORES Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37 / paleet. no) is another shopping centre which reopened last year, in September.
Several of Oslo’s biggest shopping centres have opened or reopened recently - and the cold weather is a perfect excuse for checking out their hot new shops and services.

Enjoy seaside shopping at Aker Brygge
Today it is a completely refurbished and highly ambitious shopping centre with about 30 shops, including plenty offering fashionable and high end clothes. One example is YME, a unique and much heralded concept store, which in addition to carefully curated clothes sells art, interior design articles, perfumes, books, magazines and design products, and has its own café.
TASTY SHOPPING With their more than half a dozen restaurants and cafés, Paleet is also a good example of how the city’s shopping centres are becoming more sophisticated in their approach to combining shopping with wining and dining. - The point is to let people enjoy an informal and slightly more continental culinary experience than before. People come for shopping in the afternoon and then enjoy some slightly more advanced small dishes and maybe a glass of wine, instead of just having a cup of coffee and wiener bread, says Wolfgang Schlereth, who is the general manager of six of the restaurants at the shopping centre. - We’re also trying to create a destination, a place for food and shopping before going to the cinema or theatre, Schlereth tells What’s On Oslo. These six restaurants are owned by Fursetgruppen Restaurant Group, which has made a name for itself as the organization
behind a number of prestigious dining places in Oslo. At the new Paleet they have launched restaurants with Spanish, Italian and Asian dishes, a Mexican eatery and late night mingling place, a café as well as a gastropub with quality pub food.
SEASIDE SHOPPING At Aker Brygge, the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations have also taken place and an attractive new shopping area opened last fall and winter. The stores range from the upmarket and very fashionable, to shiny new editions of popular stores such as H&M. One special thing about Aker Brygge is that we’re not only talking about a renovated buildings with new shops, but several building and also an entirely upgraded area, including a brand new shopping street called Jenny Hemstads gate – the first street in Oslo to be named after a living person for more than 100 years. The upgraded area, which retains Aker Brygge’s evocative 19th Century red brick facades, is definitely a destination in itself with its large number of stores, dining and drinking places, cultural offerings, and superb location right by the fjord.
MOST POPULAR We can also recommend Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”), which isn’t all that new or refurbished, but it is Norway’s most
visited shopping centre and a constantly happening place during opening hours. Handily located right across the road from the central train station, it contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten.no), which has a further 70 shops and is located in the same building as the central station. Both Oslo City and Byporten Shopping are big, traditional and practical shopping centres that have a great selection without too many bells and whistles.
EVEN MORE SHOPPING Another quality shopping mall outside the city centre is CC Vest (Lilleakerveien 16 / ccvest.no) in Oslo’s western suburbs, which expanded in 2009 and has about 90 stores. This is the preeminent shopping centre for people in the westernmost parts of town, and has a good selection of niche and larger, more established store concepts. Then there is Storo Storsenter (Vitaminveien 7-9 / thonshopping.no/storo), which opened in Oslo’s northern suburb of Storo in 2010. With 130 stores it is the city’s biggest shopping centre, and an excellent place for shopping everything from clothes to electronics and groceries in
Get busy at Oslo City
WORLD’S “GREENEST” At Fornebu slightly outside the city, the world’s most environmentally friendly shopping centre (according to an international classification system) opened last October. The centre, Fornebu S (Snarøyveien 55 / fornebo-s.no), has gone for a number of advanced approaches in construction, choice of materials and technical solutions that give it this impressive designation. But environmental prowess aside, this is also a great centre for shopping everything from clothes, house items and much else of all types and prices, to indulging in tasty and high quality food. It’s also not only a centre for occasional shopping, but a place for locals to get groceries, hang out, make business deals or share parenting tips.
stylish and modern surroundings. About half an hour outside Oslo you will find an even bigger shopping centre. In fact, Sandvika Storsenter (Brodtkorpgate 7 / thonshopping.no/sandvika), which relaunched itself in 2007, is one of the very biggest in the whole of Norway, with no less than 200 stores. Happy shopping!

There is a terrain park in the Hyttli area, cruising slopes in Tryvann, slopes for children and beginners, and challenging slopes and a 6-seat express lift in Wyller. Oslo Winter Park is open whenever the snow conditions are good enough, usually from November/December to April www.oslovinterpark.no
OSLO WINTER PARK SKI RENTAL AND WORKSHOP Ski and snowboard equipment and clothing for rental at the service centre (Toppsenteret) in Oslo Winter Park, just by the upper parking lot. The centre also contains a service

OSLO SKI CENTRE Oslo Ski Center consists of both Grefsenkleiva and Trollvannskleiva and features 5 slopes, 4 lifts, ski and snowboard lessons, cross-country trails, a sledging hill, ski and snowboard rentals and 2 cafés. Grefsenkleiva has the longer slopes for experienced skiers and snowboarders.
Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen The longest is 900 metres long. Here you also find a big jump, rails, and several small jumps. Trollvannskleiva is very well suited for children and beginners. The slope slants easily downhill, and the “plate lift” is easy to use. There is also a ski and snowboard school, equipment rental, sledging hill, and more. Ski trails
Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

Oslo as a winter destination has traditionally been associated with ski jumping at Holmenkollen and downhill skiing at Oslo Winter Park Tryvann. Less known is the fact that the surrounding forests also offers inhabitants and visitors over 2600 kilometres (over 1,600 miles) of prepared cross-country ski trails! 90 kilometres are floodlit for those that want a magical nighttime ski trip. Skiers can stop at 44 picturesque cabins, where some are open for overnight visitors and others for refreshments and homemade cakes. Whether you seek a relaxing experience for enjoying, the magic of silence and snow-capped pine trees, or you prefer to get a real workout, the trails are ready to be used - completely for free!
NORDMARKA The forest north of the city centre, known locally as Nordmarka, has hundreds of kilometres of prepared, redmarked, and sometimes evening-lit ski tracks. During the winter there are more than 450 km of prepared, red-marked ski trails, and some of them are illuminated in the evenings. It’s also possible to take a break or sleep in one of many staffed and unstaffed huts run by DNT Oslo og Omegn, Skiforeningen or Bymiljøetaten. The ski routes are usually well-marked, but a map is recommended for longer distances. Oslo Visitor Centre has a free simple map of the area, while the best maps can be bought at The Norwegian Touring and Mountain Association (DNT), Storgata 3, or at bookstores in Oslo.
SKIFORENINGEN

SKI LODGES There are many ski lodges in the forests in northern Oslo that are open throughout the year (check the opening hours before you go). Some are not staffed, while others serve lovely food for hungry hikers and skiers. Some also offer accommodation with meals included. OTHER WINTERACTIVITIES: ICE SKATING
Don’t want to travel far? Ice skate in the middle of town! The Spikersuppa ice skating rink is located between the National Theatre and Parliament, and is open from 11 am to 9 pm every day until March 9. It’s outside and completely free to use, although you can rent ice skates for NOK 100 per day if you don’t have your own. The rink is closed during ice preparation from approx. 3 pm every day. No pucks or sticks allowed.
TOBOGGANING
ØSTMARKA
The forest region Østmarka in eastern Oslo covers 256 km2. Østmarka is different from the other forest around Oslo, mainly because of bedrock formations created 200-1500 million years ago. The vegetation here is more open, with mostly pine forest. In Østmarka you will find recreation opportunities year round. During the winter there are prepared, red-marked ski trails, and some of them are illuminated in evenings. It is also possible to stay for a night or have a break at one of the many cozy huts belonging to the associations DNT. The associations DNT Oslo og Omegn, Skiforeningen and Bymiljøetaten (The Municipality of Oslo). These have several staffed and unstaffed huts in Østmarka. The routes in Østmarka are usually well marked, but a map is recommended for longer distances.
Take the local underground train to the top of the Korketrekker’n toboggan run, from where you can hurtle 2 kilometres downhill in about 8-10 minutes. When you reach the bottom of the run, you simply get on the underground again to reach the top! The toboggan run is located right next to the original bobsleigh run, built for the 1952 Olympic games. It is lit up in the evening, and don’t be surprised to find just as many grown-ups as kids there!

In the daytime you always have to pay a fee to park in any of these spots. www.oslo.kommune.no
PRIVATE PARKING HOUSES Parking in private parking houses and parking lots require a fee any time of the day, and are not free with the Oslo Pass.

The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945. Several showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions. Symbolic effects, artistic details and authentic artefacts make the long and winding walk through narrow 17th century stone vaults a memorable and educational experience.

There are a wide variety of department stores, boutiques and shopping districts with hundreds of outlets, charming antique shops, flea markets, exclusive international brands and local handicrafts.
SHOPPING MALLS & DEPARTMENT STORES
Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. In the city centre you can move and shake to whatever is most popular at the moment. The area also boasts several jazz and blues clubs. GETTING STARTED: At Oslo’s oldest rock bar Last Train (Karl Johans gate 45 / lasttrain.no), Norwegian and international bands perform on a regular basis. 34 Skybar (Sonja Henies plass 3 / radissonblu. com/plazahotel-oslo/dining/skybar-34), a bar on the 34th floor of Radisson Plaza Blu Hotel behind the Oslo City shopping centre, has large windows with an impressive panoramic view of the city and fjord. GETTING STARTED: Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40 / fruhagen.no) is a café in the daytime that turns into a hugely popular (and cramped) bar in the evenings. Bar and concert stage Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11 / parkteatret.no) is equally popular, as is Blå (Brenneriveien 9 / blaaoslo.no) – originally mainly a jazz club in an old riverside factory that also hosts lively DJ-nights and concerts of all kinds.
