SEE YOU NEXT YEAR WINTER! Welcome to What’s On Oslo in March and April, when the frozen glory of winter slowly gives way to the chilly Scandinavian spring and longer, brighter days. Alright, to be fair, this editorial’s headline is a little misleading. Particularly if you’re reading this in early March, chances are you’ll still be feeling it is decidedly wintery outside and a little too early for spring euphoria. The temperature is still not far above zero, it doesn’t stay bright long enough for your romantic evening stroll and you might still be dodging people carrying their pointy skis on the metro. Before you have made it through the first half of the month, the Biathlon World Championships will draw crowds to the famous winter sports complex in Holmenkollen to watch skiers race and shoot guns. And in fact, if a bit of Scandinavian winter action sounds like your cup of thermos coffee, you can read our

handy guide to the championships in this issue. Then there is Easter of course, which for many in this northern nation means not only Easter eggs laden with candy for the kids, but also skiing trips into the forest and, ideally, a cozy forest or mountain cabin to warm up in afterwards. But even Oslo gets its spring in the end and as March gives way to April, it should be safe to drop the fluffiest winter clothes and get up as late as you want on Sunday without missing out on your daily dose of sun-delivered vitamin D. And as spring puts a spring in your step, you might well find that you want to head out and explore more of the city’s many cultural offerings, shopping opportunities and countless sights and attractions. For all of that and more, this issue of What’s On Oslo will help you on your way and make sure you’ll never have a boring day whether you are into winter flu or spring fever. Enjoy! AKERSHUS CASTLE AND FORTRESS Spend a day at Akershus fortress and experience centuries of Norwegian history. Once an active fortress, the area is now a place for official representation, culture, learning and recreation. Within the fortress walls you will find two museums, a castle, beautiful views of the fjord and the city – and history from the Viking age to modern times.

Akershus castle was built as a fortified medieval castle around the year 1300. Since then the castle has been at the centre of events in Norwegian history. NORGES FORSVARSMUSEET HJEMMEFRONTMUSEUM The Armed Forces Museum Norway’s Resistance Museum

The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945. Several showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions. Symbolic effects, artistic details and authentic artefacts make the long and winding walk through narrow 17th century stone vaults a memorable and educational experience.

The museum covers Norwegian military history from the Viking era, through the numerous Nordic wars under Danish rule (ca. 1400-1814) to the Napoleonic wars, the union with Sweden 1814-1905, World War II campaign 1940 and War at Sea 19391945. The latest exhibitions cover the Cold war period 1945-1990, recent international operations and “The War Cross – Norway’s highest decoration”. The Munch Museum presents the exhibition Mapplethorpe+Munch that brings together Robert Mapplethorpe and Edvard Munch on a large scale for the very first time. Munch and Mapplethorpe reveal several similarities, such as their widespread use of traditional genres, primarily portraits and nudes. The exhibition includes a series of self-portraits from both artists, and Mapplethorpe’s known celebrity portraits of Patti Smith, Arnold Schwarzenegger amongst others. This is an great opportunity to see a unique selection of images by of one of the 20th century's most influential photograph presented together with Norway's greatest artist.

PROFILE Petter Stordalen is one of Norway’s most successful and high profile business people. Among many other things he is known for his Nordic Choice Hotels – one of Scandinavia’s biggest hotel chains. He and his wife Gunhild Stordalen are connected to a number of philanthropic efforts focused on the environment, climate change and sustainable food. How did you end up in the hotel business? It actually started when I was completely unexpectedly fired from [retail chain] Steen & Strøm in 1996. I was the CEO there

and in fact built it up and felt that it was mine, but then I found out that I didn't own very much of the company at all. Those with the most stocks had another vision than me and the ability to impose their will - and that they did. After that my hotel career began. The hotel business has always had an allure and fascinated me. To create magical meeting places for people. When I bought my first hotel I already wanted to create Scandinavia's largest hotel company and that's what happened. Many laughed and didn't

believe it was possible, but not for long! From humble beginnings in 1997, we later had a three year period where we employed 50 new people every ten days and went from 10 hotels to 100 hotels. Now we have 185 hotels and 13 000 employees in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Baltics and have started our Finnish adventure with two hotels opening in Helsinki this year.

Tell me about your award winning hotel The Thief, including how you got the idea. No one person ever has the idea for a hotel, and it was least of all me. But we thought that we had to create something that wouldn't be a streamlined international chain hotel. We wanted to create something completely unique. The vision, first and foremost, was to make art a catalyst for the hotel experience. The Thief is the only hotel in the world that is so completely dedicated to contemporary art. Many can build a fantastic hotel, but very few can fill it with the right content. All 121 rooms have art from my personal collection, while the common areas have

thieves of Wall Street, greedy capitalists - those will be your customers!â&#x20AC;? "Robbed because the prices are so high at the hotel?" And then I said "yes", but with a smile on my lips. You have to dare. Imagine if you called it something like "The Oslo Fjord". Boring! You don't remember "The Oslo Fjord", after all - you yawn and forget about it. But "The Thief" - that you remember! How did Nordic Choice Hotels become one of Scandinavia's biggest hotel chains? The whole of Nordic Choice Hotels is in many ways based on a simple recipe. Many think that things like money, buildings and location are the most important, but no. What it's all about, is that we chose to focus on our people and on fostering a culture that creates energy, guts and enthusiasm. One thing to be aware of Tarjei is that if you want to build a company, you have to know your own strengths and weaknesses and dare to employ people that are better than you. The goal is to encourage both development and growth on the company's own terms instead of your terms.

A new Nordic Choice hotel is opening on Oslo's main street Karl Johans gate this March. What's the story there? Comfort Hotel Karl Johan will be the mother of all culture hotels. The building was called Noah's Ark, because the man who owned it, Fritz Frölich, manufactured everything from toys to cognac. Then the whole building burned down in the city fire of 1858 and in modern times it has been used for culture and, not least, provocation. It has also housed Oslo's biggest gay bar! Which reminds me: I'm very proud of the fact that our Clarion hotels are the main sponsors of Pride in Stockholm, Oslo and Bergen. It shouldn't matter if you are called Ali or Ola or are gay, transsexual or lesbian, Muslim or Christian, if you are from Thailand or Tafjord - we want you to work with us. This is why it will have the Nordic countries’ first hotel music studio. It's unusual, I know! But I've opened many hotels that some have doubted, and then they have become huge successes. Just wait and watch. People made a lot of noise when you stopped serving bacon at some hotels last year? As I baptised it for a short while Bacongate. "Wow!” I thought, "This is our Bacongate". We probably went a bit further than our guests were ready for. But the idea was that by changing the breakfast menu a bit and adding more fruit and vegetables, we could remove sausages and bacon and people wouldn't think much of it. But then it exploded: "Stordalen has stolen the bacon!" It was really just a test project at 16 hotels in the Comfort chain, but we were told to "bring the bacon back!"

And then we had to reverse our decision, which is completely fine. The guest will always be right in our minds. But also it's important to dare to take political positions and to challenge. We are a company which shall have clear positions as regards the environment and that shall take part in influencing things. You won the title "Norway's best strawberry seller" when you were a kid and have a "Strawberry Philosophy"? Porsgrunn was my world when I was 12 and when I sold strawberries at a competition there in 1974 the local paper voted me - highly informally - Norway's best strawberry seller.

Then I thought: "My father is a genius and one day I will prove how absolutely right he was." You can always say, "If only I had chosen a slightly bigger hotel, hosted a few more hotel conferences", and so on, but that's not what creates success. We have hotels that have done great and still are doing great, but that's because of the people running it. You and your wife Gunhild have also received a lot of attention for your focus on the environment? I think that a buck earned in an ethical and conscientious way is worth more than another. The climate is one of the biggest challenges the world faces. We only have this one world. One day my children will ask me, "Why didn't your generation do something?â&#x20AC;? We have the knowledge and are maybe the last generation that has a chance to do something about it. Because of this I work to limit the environmental footprint of the hotel business. I hope we will go from a short-sighted capitalism that has failed to a more forward-looking capitalism that takes account of ethics and the environment and contributes to sustainable growth.

One night when I was probably complaining too much about the competition, my father said: "Sell the berries you have, for they are the only ones you can sell". Which is basically about the hand you have been dealt. Don't worry about it, but take the hand you have been dealt and make the best out of it, as then you will get the best results you can get.

We serve food to 25000 guests every single day, which means that what we put on the plates of our guests means a lot. We have reduced our use of red meat by 20 percent and increased the proportion of fruit and vegetables by 20 percent. We have also reduced food waste in our hotels by 20 %. And I'll be totally honest with you Tarjei. I would never have dreamed that my wife would start a globe spanning project [called EAT] and end up speaking at the UN in New York, working with world leaders there and elsewhere. That is incredibly impressive. She has enormous willpower

and an ability to get things done which makes a real difference. How did you meet your wife?

there one day, but not as the bag-barrier carrying Gunhild's bag! And the same at UN headquarters - I was the bag-carrier. Because that's Gunhild. As she said early on: "Petter, you make the cash and I will use the cash to effect change." And she was totally serious. Your wedding ceremony in Morocco was officiated by Bob Geldof. Why and how did that go? Very simple: Like me Gunhild is an agnostic and like me she didn't want a church wedding and a priest - though I will add that more recently we have concluded that there is much strength inherent in faith and hope.

We had to have an officiator that we both knew and that would make the whole thing fun. I asked Bob and he said that yes, that was completely fine. I tried to make some routines for him, but he isn't Bob Geldof for nothing. I had written a little speech for him on a piece of paper that I showed him earlier in the day and said, "Here Bob, this is what you'll say". He didn't take the paper there and then but I thought, "That’s fine, he's a professional". When we left to go to the wedding I saw to my horror that he had crumpled the paper and left it behind! And in the end he held a speech that was way longer than the one I had written and completely different, a great speech that moved everyone. And finally: What are your Oslo tips for interesting places to explore?

I met her at [Norwegian music festival] Quartfestivalen, but it took two more years before I got the first date. I guess her plan wasn't really to start dating a guy like me with loads of money and all that stuff. She had other plans for her life and probably didn't want to be arm candy for some guy! But she has found out that there are many good capitalists that do positive things. She's not really the kind of girl that's into marriage, but for me getting married was about showing that this is serious and that we are a team with a common platform. I think it's fantastic to travel around the world with her and I love the fact that we went to the World Economic Forum because of EAT. I thought I might go

Oslo has directly accessible forest, ‘skjærgård’ and island life right outside the city centre! This is completely unique and should be taken advantage of. Another tip is Middagsbukta, a fantastic place that has brought joy to many. In addition Oslo has seen a big increase in restaurants and cultural offerings. Tjuvholmen is the stronghold of contemporary art. Grünerløkka has turned into a fantastic place with all sorts of different people, restaurants and activities. Then there is the new fjord swimming facility Sørenga bad and many, many more things to see and do around town. But for me the world's best start to the day is my jogging trip around Bygdøy in the morning! u

In March tens of thousands of fans of skis and guns will gather at Oslo’s famous Holmenkollen ski facility. Find out what you need to know about this year’s biggest winter sports party! 125,000 spectators, 1,300 volunteers and 350 athletes from 40 nations will together create a Biathlon World Championships you’ll be able to tell your grandkids tall tales about.

Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Competitions consist of races in which contestants ski around a cross-country trail system, and where the total distance is broken up by either two or four shooting rounds.

This year's championships are the highlight for international stars such as Martin Fourcade, Emil Hegle Svendsen, Tiril Eckhoff and Kaisa Mäkäräinen.

FINALLY HOME The first world championships were held in Austria in 1958, and since then they have been held in lots of different countries. That includes no less than seven previous championships in Norway,

the most recent of which was in 2002. Not so surprising perhaps, given that biathlon originated in the 18th century as an alternative training exercise for Norwayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s military! In fact, until 1984 biathlon in Norway was connected to a government organization promoting civilian marksmanship in support of national defense. This year, again, biathlon is coming home. u

Oslo has a great selection of interesting shops. There are a wide variety of department stores, boutiques and shopping districts with hundreds of outlets, charming antique shops, flea markets, exclusive international brands and local handicrafts.

SHOPPING MALLS & DEPARTMENT STORES

Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten. no), which has a further 70 shops. Ø (Jernbanetorget 1 / ostbanehallen.no), in the oldest part of Oslo Central Station, has an attractive new dining and shopping area, a hotel and Oslo Visitor Centre. Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B/ egerkarljohan. no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house with over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store near Stortinget with many well-known Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37 / paleet.no) reopened in 2014 as a refurbished, innovative and more upmarket shopping centre that is well worth a visit. At Aker Brygge (akerbrygge.no), the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations have taken place and an attractive new shopping area opened in 2014 with lots of stores.

Fuglen (Universitetsgata 2 / fuglen.no) is a great retro-looking coffee shop and cocktail bar, but “everything” here is also for sale, from the retro chairs and tables to the plates. The vintage shop Frøken Dianas Salonger (Markveien 56 / frokendianassalonger.no) sells hand-picked, custom designed and mostly used clothes, and Robot (Korsgata 22 / trabantclothing. com) focuses on imported vintage, retro and mod clothing, to mention just a few of the places in this hip area.

ART & ANTIQUES

There are quite a lot of places to check out around town for those who would like to get in touch with their artistic or antiquarian sides. Take a stroll and explore beautiful paintings, art magazines, old books, handicrafts and antique furniture. The popular Vestkanttorvet Flea Market (Vestkanttorvet (Professor Dahls gate) / vestkanttorvet.wordpress.com) is Oslo’s oldest market, and the place to go for bric-a-brac and antiques on Saturdays (March – December). Blomqvist kunsthandel (Tordenskiolds gate 5 / blomqvist. no) is Norway’s largest auction house and specializes in local and international art, as well as Norwegian antiques. You might also want to take a look at Damm’s Antiquarian Books (Frederik Stangs gate 46 / damms.no), the oldest antiquarian book store in Scandinavia, as well as antiques shop Galleri Gimle Arts and Antiques (Gimleveien 21 / galleri-gimle.no). Basarhallene (Lille Grensen 3) houses several handicraft and antique shops.

VINTAGE & SECOND-HAND

BOOKS & MUSIC

Most vintage and second-hand stores are found in the Grünerløkka area, although there are some more gems spread around town.

There are plenty of places around town to satisfy your appetite for books and music. To get you started we’ll mention just a few of the more unique ones.

Fretex (fretex.no), Norway’s biggest chain of second-hand shops with four shops just in Oslo, is run by the Christian charity Salvation Army Norway. It’s a great place to find clothes at very cheap prices. UFF has two stores in Oslo: UFF Underground (Storgata 1/ uffnorge.org/second-hand/ uff-underground-butikk) where you can choose from thousands of pieces of trendy second-hand clothes from the ‘50s-‘70s, and UFF Jernbanetorget (Jernbanetorget 2 / www.uffnorge.org/second-hand/ uff-jernbanetorget) with a more

Bare Jazz (Grensen 8 / barejazz.no) is a great jazz-only specialty music store with a café and a place to hear good jazz music, sometimes live, while nearby Big Dipper (Møllergata 1 / bigdipper.no) has a large selection of vinyl. Eldorado Bookstore (Torggata 9A / eldo.no) is the largest independent bookstore in Scandinavia, with 4,000 square metres of books, culture and music, including Norway’s largest departments for children’s books, audio books and classical music, and a coffee shop, back yard restaurant and 

Tronsmo (Universitetsgata 12 / tronsmo.no) is a specialist book shop focusing on subjects like politics, feminism, gay & lesbian issues, movies and ficition, has a good selection of English-language literature, and a basement full of comic books. The Nobel Peace Center Gift Shop in the Nobel Peace Center (Brynjulf Bulls plass 1 / nobelpeacecenter.org) has books related to war, peace and development. The book shops of The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design (Universitetsgata 13 / nasjonalmuseet.no) are well worth a visit. They sell books related to the fields of the four institutions tied to the museum: The National Gallery, The National Museum – Architecture, The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

DESIGN

Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours. Moods of Norway (moodsofnorway.com) on Oslo’s main street (Karl Johans gate 13), near Parliament (Akersgata 33), and in Homansbyen (Hegdehaugsveien 34), is a chain of stores and a hip Norwegian designer brand with funky clothes for every occasion – and the slogan “Happy Clothes for Happy People”. David-Andersen (david-andersen.no) stores have a great selection of gold, diamond, silver and enamel jewelry. Purenkel (Steenstrups gate 12 / www.purenkel.no) is a shop and gallery

At Norway Designs (Stortingsgata 28 / norwaydesigns. no) you’ll find great Norwegian, Nordic and European interior design articles, and at Pur Norsk (Industrigata 36 / purnorsk. no) you can buy Norwegian design products such as furniture and personal items. Heimen husflid (Rosenkrantz’ gate 8 / heimen.no) is a traditional handicraft shop with Norwegian sweaters and other knitwear, blankets, arts and crafts and much more, and the shop Illums bolighus (Ruseløkkveien 26 / illumsbolighus.no) is four whole floors of famous and new Danish, Scandinavian and international furniture design.

You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate. LUXURY & HIGH-END

Oslo’s luxury and upmarket shopping opportunities have grown fast in recent years, and can be found in many parts of town, but especially on and near Karl Johans gate as well as on the city’s wealthy west side. Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B / egerkarljohan.no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house, and stocks over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store with many well-known and attractive Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. House of Oslo (Ruseløkkveien 26 / houseofoslo.no) is Norway’s first and only department store that specializes in high-end design, interior and lifestyle, and contains over 20 shops that sell everything from teaspoons to sofas. Upmarket stores with self-explanatory names include Gucci (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Hermés (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Louis Vuitton (Akersgata 20) and Mulberry (Akersgata 18). On and around Bogstadveien on the city’s west side there are also a number of high-end stores, and nearby you’ll for instance find

No visit to Oslo is complete without at least one souvenir! While souvenirs of course can be anything that reminds you of this place and your trip, around the city centre there are places that make it easy for you. At the new Oslo Visitor Centre (Jernbanetorget 1), next to Oslo Central station, you will also find Oslo Gift Shop (ostbanehallen.no/butikk/oslo-gift-shop), where you can buy classic souvenir items like trolls, lusekofte, wollen socks and much more. Meanwhile, two souvenir shops can be found near Oslo City Hall. These are Norway Shop (Fridtjof Nansens plass 9 / norwayshop.com), a big store that sells Norwegian knitwear, gifts and souvenirs, and Holm – Souvenirs & Sweaters (Hieronymus Heyerdalsgate 1 / thv-holm. no), which sells a lots of headwear for all occasions, as well as sweaters from Dale of Norway, and various souvenirs and gifts. Oslo Sweater Shop in Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel (Holbergs gate 30 / sweater.no) as well as in Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania (Biskop Gunnerus’ gate 3 / sweater.no) has the country’s largest selection of Norwegian sweaters as well as many other souvenirs. And once you’ve been to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, why not drop by the Vigeland Visitors’ Centre (Frognerveien 67) just inside the main gates of the park, where you can pick up even more souvenirs. u

BJØRVIKA: OSLO’S CRAZY NEW DISTRICT A new Munch-museum, main library, opera house, culture island, river, city farm, fjord swimming and narrow, stick-like skyscrapers. Welcome to Bjørvika - Oslo’s crazy but cool new district. If you head into Oslo from the airport or other eastern areas, one of the first things you are likely to notice are a row of narrow and imaginatively designed skyscrapers lined up right beside each other at about 12 metre intervals. They look a bit like dominoes or supermarket barcodes and in fact, "Barcode" is the official name! Apart from a couple of exceptions in the same area, Barcode represents Oslo’s only flirt with skyscrapers and the city’s first and only skyscraper “skyline”. The first building was completed in 2008 and more are being built as you read this. The buildings host big companies, pricey apartments and at ground level restaurants, bars and other businesses have been opening their doors. Barcode also represents one of the first and largest projects in the city’s new Bjørvika district, which roughly stretches from the central station, past the skyscrapers and over the road to the area around and immediately to the east of the opera house.

FROM SHIPPING CONTAINERS TO CULTURE The opera house itself, completed in 2007, was in fact the first major development in Bjørvika.

Before, this was a maritime zone mainly cut off from the city by container ports and other industrial uses. Economically important, but not exactly very attractive to look at or to use for most of us. The industrial operations were moved further out of town and now the opera house has quickly become a refreshing and impressive new go-to place in Oslo, including its roof which you can walk on to enjoy great views of the city and fjord. In the sea behind the opera house, a part natural and part man-made mini-peninsula called Sukkerbiten (The Sugar Lump) has been transformed from an industrial storage area to a tiny culture “island” with a café, bar and various events during the warm parts of the year, including art exhibitions and music festivals. A stylish and fascinating “floating bridge” that literally grazes the water leads from Sukkerbiten to Sørenga, a new neighbourhood that forms part of Bjørvika. Here, right by the sea, there are more apartments as well as cafes, restaurants and shops. But the biggest highlight of Sørenga for many, and packed with bathers on hot summer days, is Sørenga sjøbad a man-made swimming complex complete with wooden walkways and seats, a sea water swimming pool and fjord diving board. apartment at Sørenga, the day can begin with a dip in the fjord!

A HOLE FOR BOOKS Between the Opera House and Barcode, a brand new street called Dronning Eufemias gate officially opened in June 2015. It stretches eastward from in front of the Opera House to the last of the Barcode skyscrapers. It is a 43 metre wide street with lanes for cars, public transport and bicycles, as well as vegetation strips with bushes and hundreds of trees. One of the things that had to be done to develop it was to remove the small spaghetti junction Bispelokket that dominated parts of the stretch – another practical but not pretty part of the “old Bjørvika”. Between Dronning Eufemias gate and the Opera House, there is a huge hole in the ground. If everything goes according to plan this mysterious chasm will be filled by the foundations of Oslo’s new main library, Deichmanske hovedbibliotek, which today is based deeper inside the city in a building from 1933 much less suited for modern library requirements. Planned finished in 2019, the brains behind it hope it will become one of the leading libraries in Northern Europe.

The library will be housed in an impressive new building designed by Norwegian architects.

A NEW HOME FOR “THE SCREAM” Edvard Munch’s century old angst-filled painting “The Scream” is one of the world’s most famous. Munch painted several versions and in 2012 one was sold for 120 million US dollars - at the time the highest price ever paid for the sale of a painting at auction. The Munch museum is at Tøyen in inner city east Oslo, and hosts “The Scream”, “Madonna” and about 28000 other paintings, sketches, photographs and sculptures by Munch. But soon it, too, will move to Bjørvika. The brand new Munch museum will open immediately east of the opera house and in theory around the same time as the new library – in 2019. It will be housed in yet another impressive modernistic building, where construction began just a few months ago. Surrounded by water on three sides, it will have 12 floors and the top floors will slant horizontally outwards, making for a very distinctive shape.

NATURE IN THE CITY One of the most interesting things about Bjørvika is the fact that it will also be decidedly “green”. As well as modern buildings with environmentally friendly technical features, plenty of actual nature plays a big role in the district. For one thing there is the fjord and the swimming complex at Sørenga noted earlier, as well as the hundreds of trees along Dronning Eufemias gate. But did you know that Bjørvika even has a river? Akerselva is Oslo’s big urban river, stretching down through the centre of town from the lake Maridalsvannet in the northern hills. Even though it already is a popular place to walk or bicycle along due to the many interesting things to see and experience by its banks, the final stretch disappears into a tunnel from the 1950s which goes under the train tracks at the central station. Akerselva emerges again at its outlet into the fjord left of the opera house, in an area which until recently was very obscure and

unattractive, first hidden by maritime industrial activity and then by building at and around the opera house. Now the parts of the tunnel not directly under the train tracks have been removed so that the last 500 metres of the river are visible again. Along this part of Akerselva a stretch of wooden pier with integrated seating opened last year, as well as a small waterfall in the river itself, sculptures have been raised and trees and other plants are popping up.

URBAN FARMING Several parks and other areas with vegetation are also being developed. One of those that has come the furthest and received most attention so far is Loalmenningen, which is an area far east in Bjørvika, behind Sørenga. Here right in the middle of “no-man’sland”, near the sea, but surrounded by roads and construction work and with a tall concrete pipe in the middle that provides ventilation to an underground car tunnel below, is a green field that is turning into something very interesting indeed. While this stage of the giant Bjørvika-project won’t be finished until about 2020,

summer, in soil brought there by 50 organic farmers that formed part of a group of 300 people that walked in a “soil procession” from the city centre to Loalmenningen. This and other activities at Losæter have been noticed by the city authorities. Last year the authorities released their very first “urban farming plan”, which notes that Losæter “can become a knowledge centre for urban farming and the inner city’s cultural history”. In January a job advertisement was published for Norway’s very first paid position as a “city farmer”, who will help with planning, implementation and public information related to Losæter’s organic farming.

THE BOOK THAT WON’T BE READ FOR 100 YEARS

when the plan is that Loalmenningen will be a park and maritime recreation area, some creative and at least officially “temporary” activities are already very much alive and kicking. The first things started happening here as far back as 2012, when the organic garden allotments of Herligheten were created. City allotments, a feature of many cities, are small patches of land where individuals can grow plants and vegetables. There are 100 allotments at Herligheten, where those that have received an allotment can grow whatever they want as long as it can survive there and is grown using organic methods.

ANCIENT CORN Recently Herligheten has become part of Losæter, an institution created last year that is dedicated to art and urban farming in the same field. One of Losæter’s other projects involves planting “ancient corn”, which are rare and traditional corn seed varieties that haven’t been adapted for modern farming. Its proponents say that ancient corns can contain high levels of nutrients and can give a unique taste to for instance bread.

Loalmenningen and Losæter is all about slow organic farming and local “slow food”. But one project that is slower than all the others has nothing to do with food at all. The “Future Library” is an art project by the Scottish artist Katie Peterson, which will grow year-by-year for 100 years. It is part of the larger “Slow Space” art project for Bjørvika, with focus on long-lasting art. In 2014 one thousand trees were planted in an area of the forest beside Oslo called Vettakollen. In 2114 the trees will be felled and used to create paper for a book anthology that just began, but won’t be completed or printed until that year. For every year until 2114, a selected author will submit a text which will be stored in a special room in the new main library in Bjørvika. But no one will be allowed to read the texts until 2114. The first text was provided last year by the famous Canadian author and environmental activist Margaret Atwood. And finally: By the end of 2015 only 29% of the Bjørvika project was complete, and about 15% more is being worked on right now. As you luckily won’t have to wait 100 years for the other bits, there is in other words plenty more to look forwards to. Stay tuned! u

In the city centre you can move and shake to whatever is most popular at the moment. The area also boasts several jazz and blues clubs. At Oslo’s oldest rock bar Last Train (Karl Johans gate 45 / lasttrain.no), Norwegian and international bands perform on a regular basis. 34 Skybar (Sonja Henies plass 3 / radissonblu.com/plazahotel-oslo/dining/skybar-34), a bar on the 34th floor of Radisson Plaza Blu Hotel behind the Oslo City shopping centre, has large windows with an impressive panoramic view of the city and fjord. Jaeger (Grensen 9 / jaegeroslo.no) is a popular club with electronic music and DJs most nights. Hip IZAKAYA (St. Olavs Gate 7 / izakayaoslo.com) is a Japanese bar with authentic Japanese food and drinks, where enthusiastic bartenders wax lyrical about sake and shochu.

(Brenneriveien 9 / blaaoslo.no) – originally mainly a jazz club in an old riverside factory that also hosts lively DJ-nights and concerts of all kinds. BAR Vulkan (Maridalsveien 17 / www.barsocialeating.no) is a fancy bar known for its tasty cocktails and (in summer) large roof terrace, rockabilly-inspired Ryes (Thorvald Meyers gate 59 / facebook. com/RyesOslo) is a great place for a twirl on the dance floor, Bar Boca (Thorvald Meyers gate 30 / facebook.com/pages/ Bar-Boca/284273994971781?fref=ts) with its tasteful ‘50s/’60s interior has professional bartenders and great drinks, and Schouskjelleren Mikrobryggeri (Trondheimsveien 2 / schouskjelleren.no) is an atmospheric basement micro-brewery with a large selection of beers. Norway’s first food hall Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17 / mathallenoslo.no) has a number of interesting bars, including Smelteverket (smelteverketoslo.no) with the city’s longest bar disk, great food and mini concerts.

Just northeast of the city centre is Grünerløkka, with active music venues that make concerts an important part of the borough’s nightlife. Many of the area’s popular cafés turn into hot spots in the evening, and this is one of the most popular areas for partygoers in general and hipsters in particular. Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40 / fruhagen.no) is a café in the daytime that turns into a hugely popular (and cramped) bar in the evenings. Bar and concert stage Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11 / parkteatret.no) is equally popular, as is Blå

GRØNLAND

Grønland on the east side of town offers a refreshing blend of friendly and laid-back clubs with varied music offerings, as well as slightly ragged bars with some of the cheapest beer in town. Dattera til Hagen (Grønland 10 / dattera. no) is a colourful bar and café with two floors and a big, charming backyard. Ivars kro (Grønland 14 / ivarskro.no) is a pianobar with live music every night and a large bar with a good selection of drinks, while Oslo Mekaniske Verksted (Tøyenbekken 34 / oslomekaniskeverksted.no) is a big and cozy bar/pub with a big 

fireplace, board games, comfy sofas - and a theatre in the same building. Caféteatret (Hollendergata 8 / cafeteatret.no) is a multicultural bar, concert and theatre stage that includes popular open stage nights, and Pigalle (Grønlandsleiret 15 / olympen.no) features a mostly original ‘60s interior and music from the ‘60s and ‘70s.

YOUNGSTORGET

In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places with a more alternative/rock-oriented music profile, as well as a couple of clubs devoted to electronic music. Kulturhuset (Youngstorget 3 / kulturhusetioslo.no) covers a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar and shuffle board. Café Mono (Pløens gate 4 / cafemono.no) is a dark and relaxed bar/pub/concert stage that plays a lot of rock, alternative rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2 / internasjonalen.no), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25 / thevilla.no), Fisk & Vilt (Pløens gate 4 / fiskogvilt.no) and Turkish Delight (Torggata 35 / turkish. no) appeal to the electronic music crowd,

with local and international DJs and genres such as house, techno and dub step. In the basement of the bar Revolver (Møllergata 32 / revolveroslo.no) young crowds dance the night away to 80s pop, rock and disco. Cafe Sør (Torggata 11 / cafesor.no) is another very popular place with nice drinks and great music, as well as the relatively low age limit of 20 (22 after midnight on weekends). Angst Bar (Torggata 11 / facebook. com/pages/ANGST-BAR/210106519005748) is a bar in a passageway called Strøget which is hip, intimate, with great music and lots of art on the walls (also backyard parties during weekends).

Bjørvika and Sørenga, two newly developed seaside districts near the Opera House, are very scenically placed and have some quality places for grabbing a drink. Vesper Bar (Dronning Eufemias gate 32 / www.vesperbar.no) has made a name for itself with super tasty drinks and gourmet pub food. Bun's Burger Bar (Sørengkaia 71 / www.facebook.com/bunsburgerbaroslo) has almost 100 types of beer, live music on the first Friday of every month, and of course great burgers. You can also enjoy Italian food or just a few drinks at Cargo Restaurant & Bar (Sørengkaia 99 / www.cargorestaurant.no/).

Along the waterfront at Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen you will meet tourists, business people, everyday locals and the wealthy. This is a great place to go for relatively upmarket food, pubbing and clubbing, and a summer drink at one of the slick waterfront bars with beautiful views of the ocean. BAR Tjuvholmen (Bryggegangen 6 / barsocialeating.no) is a stylish and popular bar and restaurant on the waterfront in Oslo’s newest completed neighbourhood, and a great place for cocktails. TICKETS Oslo’s local buses, trams, ferries and the metro share a ticket system. Single tickets can be purchased on busses, trams and ferries, but are cheaper if you buy them in advance. On the metro tickets must be purchased before entering the train. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines and ticket offices at the metro stations, at Oslo Visitor Centre, in kiosks including Narvesen, 7-Eleven and Deli de Luca, and at Ruter’s Service Centre at Jernbanetorget (in front of Oslo Central Station). Remember to activate your ticket when you start your trip. TRAM Oslo has six tram lines that run through the city from east to west. The route network primarily covers the inner city, but a couple of longer routes go out to the residential areas west, south and north of the city centre

METRO (T-BANE) Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All branch lines and the ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jernbanetorget (Oslo Central Station).

BUS Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station.
