DEAR READER

Keeping What’s On updated at all times is what makes this guide worth publishing. If we happen to have incorrect information about places, sites or happenings, please let us know. What’s On accepts no responsibility for any errors or alterations.

With its 1000 year old history, Oslo is the oldest of the Nordic capitals. The city, surrounded by islands and forested hills, is situated at the end of one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. From the Viking age until today, people have looked to this place as a safe haven for trade, industry and cultural enrichment. Today, Oslo has a population of 600.000 inhabitants, and is the nation’s financial, political and cultural centre. Allow yourself the time to wander in the city’s streets, parks, forests or along the fjord, and get a feel for the capital’s abundant history in its character. Oslo is the capital of the changing seasons. The surrounding countryside makes its mark on the city’s inhabitants and buildings and the people’s rhythm and life-style changes with the weather. You will be able to discover a city which is full of life all year round, both in the narrow streets and in the vast forests. Oslo is a city of variation and contrast. Oslo is also Munch’s and Ibsen’s city. The art and cultural life reflect the fact that the inhabitants of Oslo come from all over the country and from all parts of the World. The city can offer unique sights and meaningful experiences, many of which are presented in this guide. Useful information may be found at www.visitoslo.com, or at our tourist information centre by the City Hall, open every day all year round. On behalf of Oslo we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors, promising an exciting and surprising experience. Welcome to Oslo!

SPRING IS IN THE AIR – Everywhere we Look Around... Welcome to What’s On Oslo in March and April – when springtime wakes Norwegians from their winter hibernation! In truth, even though Norwegian bears like to find a cozy spot to sleep out the cold season, many Norwegians are not very good hibernators at all - preferring to strap on some skis to roam the forests even in winter. Still, with spring comes the promise of warmer times and, literally, greener pastures. As the days stay bright longer, many locals feel energized and get a fresh spring (pun intended) in their step. The new activity can also be seen in the increasing amount of events that are organized all over town. For instance, in this issue you can read about the city’s official Tourist In Your Own City event, when you get free entrance to museums and attractions with the Oslo Pass. The world famous Cirque du Soleil circus troupe will be visiting and the Oslo Open Art Festival lets you visit no less than 350 private artist studios to see artists in action. However, in the hills above Oslo winter will still be hanging on – to the great joy of organizers and visitors at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival! The March / April issue of What’s On Oslo also features an article on a couple of Oslo-patriotic bloggers that defend their city from external critics with humour and great photographs. To really rub it in, we also serve you a piece about how several international organizations ranks Norway as best or near best in the world when it comes to things like standard of living and social cohesion. And, as always, you can read about countless other sights and activities in the rest of the magazine, ensuring that your Oslo springtime will be anything but boring! Enjoy your March/April edition! INTERVIEW

Local The

Coffee Shop Owner

How did a guy from Manchester end up as a coffee shop owner in suburban Oslo?

What surprised you the most when you moved here?

I followed the Norwegian girl!

During one of my first winters here I think we had minus 27 degrees outside one night - I thought I was going to die. I wasn’t prepared for the cold with my t-shirt and duffel coat! As the Norwegian rhyme says though, «There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes».

Every English guy in Norway I’ve talked to, it’s the same story. I met her while studying in London and in 1999 I moved to be with her. Nine years ago my girlfriend’s childhood friend asked me to work at the original Kaffe & Brød at nearby Kjelsås, here in the suburbs north east of the city centre. I had no skills in that whatsoever, but the place got more and more popular, more staff was needed and I ended up as manager. And I enjoyed it. Talking to the locals, feeling a bit more at home, integrating a bit more. I could speak a litte Norwegian at the time, but the café really let me get into the Norwegian side of things. Often you get up every day, you don’t really talk to anyone, and you get on the tram, and so on. But working in a café you meet people in a more natural setting – a bit like a local pub in England. After about two-and-a-half years at Kjelsås, I decided that I wanted to open my own coffee shop and basically spread Kaffe & Brød further into the community.

I was also surprised at how much things cost, such as the beer. What are your favourite spots in Oslo? You mean apart from my coffee shop?! I like Grünerløkka because there’s a lot of bars and small shops there. For me it’s more interesting than the city centre and it reminds me a little bit of the life I had in London. In the summer I like to take the kids to Huk beach at Bygdøy. There are also one or two cliff spots there that you can jump off. And the adrenaline when you dive from 10 metres means that you don’t notice the cold water! Once a friend and I spotted a killer whale there, which was kind of cool.

Who: Gary Anderton, owner of Kaffe & Brød coffee shop, Disenveien 31 From: Manchester, England Lives: Kjelsås, Oslo Age: 37 Interviewed: Feb 4

In addition, Oslo is really near the forest. Before I got too busy with kids and work and so on, I used to go summer camping in the forest with friends. That was great because it’s so close and convenient. I also used to go snowboarding at Tryvann and sometimes Grefsenkollen after work. Tryvann is a great place for a city slope. My friend taught me snowboarding there and after a few broken ribs I managed! When family members visit they usually like Aker brygge the most. They’re mostly from Manchester which isn’t by the sea, so they like the whole coastal thing. And in the summer it’s particularly nice there with all the bars and cafes. What tips do you have for people looking for a nice night out? The place I would go to drink is Grünerløkka because of all the bars there. There are also nice spots to eat there, such as Mucho Mas with good Mexican food and a good atmosphere. Nighthawk Diner has a typical Grünerløkka vibe – tattooed men with beards – and is a good weekend place if you can find a free table.

There is a really good pizza place at Sandaker (called Lofthus samvirkelag - ed.). In the daytime it’s a bakery and in the evening that closes and it becomes a pizza restaurant. Also, when I go out for mates to watch football we usually start at O’Leary’s pub in Karl Johans gate in the city centre. It has lots of big screens, pretty good food and is a good starting point before going other places in the centre. Do you have any integration advice for people that are new to Oslo? I would try to learn the language and understand it as soon as you can. And learn to do a winter sport, because the Oslo winter is long and dark and you need to have something to look forward to there! For me though, the really decisive thing was Kaffe & Brød. English people, especially where I’m from, are quite social and they have social spaces in which to meet. Here at Kjelsås there was no place to get friends, but with the coffee shop I suddenly felt connected with a lot of Norwegians.

Cirque du Soleil – Quidam Let the world’s most famous circus troupe awe you with mind boggling acrobatics from another world! Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen To call Cirque du Soleil a circus troupe is really a major understatement. This famous Canadian performance group, founded in Canada in the early 1980’s by two former street performers, has grown to become the most famous of all circus acts. Today operating not just as a group but as the world’s largest theatrical production company, Cirque du Soleil has acts in hundreds of countries and over 4000 employees. Now, in early March, you have the opportunity to see one of their circus teams in action right here in Oslo!

FANTASTIC ACROBATICS At Oslo’s largest cultural stage, Oslo Spektrum, Cirque du Soleil are going to perform their much vaunted show Quidam. Deriving its title from the Latin word for “a nameless passerby”, the show focuses on the imagination of a jaded girl named Zoe. Drawing heavily from surrealistic artwork, the performers in the show are the manifestations of her magical daydreams. Quidam is a production that has already toured on five continents and performed for millions of people since its premiere in Monteal in 1996. The cast consists of no less than 45 acrobats, musicians, singers and characters. As with all their shows, you can expect to be treated to fantastic acrobatics and effects set to evocative live music. Prepare to have your mind blown!

Elsa of Brabant has been accused of the most unforgiveable of crimes: Murdering her brother. One day, a mysterious man appears who promises to help her. In order to receive his help, and his love, she must promise never to ask where he comes from, who he is, or what he represents. But is this man truly a redeemer, or is he seeking redemption for himself? And will Elsa be able to refrain from asking those questions? This new production of Lohengrin by Johannes Erath is based on the universal conflict that is laid out in Wagner’s drama: Between blind faith on the one hand and the need for knowledge and wisdom on the other.

It’s Official -We’ are“Best”! Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

Welcome to Oslo, the capital of the world’s best country according to the United Nations! Why on earth is that? Norwegians have become rather used to people praising their country as really, really great. And the acclaim isn’t only a result of the Nordic craze sweeping parts of Western society – it’s official. Sure, it’s great when a Norwegian comedy team conquers the world with a music video on the sounds that foxes makes, or when Disney models big parts of its animated blockbuster Frozen on Norwegian settings and landmarks (such as Oslo’s Akershus Fortress). But then again, Swede Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, launched with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo book, is huge too – and don’t get us started on ABBA. No, what really seems to set Norway apart are some of the big, international reports that seek to compare countries based on a number of variables that can be modestly summarized as “awesomeness”.

MOST DEVELOPED COUNTRY

What are these reports, and what exactly do they say?

The biggest is the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Human Development Index (HDI). Norway has been ranking number one on the HDI-list every year since 2009 – so long that one might be forgiven for almost taking the top position for granted by now. The HDI ranks 187 countries according to a scoring system based on average life expectancy (81.5 years in Norway), the average number of years of education received by people aged 25 or above (12.6 years), the number of years of schooling that a child can expect to receive if current patterns continue (17.6 years), and average yearly incomes before taxes (63,909 US dollars in 2013). Or, in the UNDP’s own words, it measures national achievement related to “a long and healthy life, knowledge and a decent standard of living”. Norway comes out on top as the most developed country in these areas when a score is calculated based on the four indicators mentioned. Norway may not be best in each category, but it is overall best, says the UNDP.

MOST PROSPEROUS COUNTRY

For the second year running Norway is also the world’s most prosperous country, according to another report which has been making a bit of a splash lately - the international Legatum Institute’s Prosperity Index. We’re not talking average yearly incomes here; Norway is “only” hovering in the top 5 or 6 on that ranking, behind countries like Qatar, Luxembourg and Brunei. Instead, this is a report that measures the categories Economy, Entrepreneurship & Opportunity, Governance, Education, Health, Safety & Security, Personal Freedom and Social Capital. Of the eight categories, Norway does best (number one in the world) on Social Capital, which is a measure of things such as if people trust most other people, if they donate to charity, and so on. Norway does worst (seventh best in the world) on Entrepreneurship & Opportunity. Overall, again, Norway comes out on top. Norway isn’t doing too badly in other international reports, either. According to the World Bank for instance we are the sixth easiest country to do business in, and according to the US Central Intelligence Agency we are the seventh most equal country as regards personal incomes.

FASTEST GROWING CAPITAL

We also have the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund (formerly known as the “oil fund”), with a little of the investments

used each year and the rest saved for a future without oil. And we sailed through the international financial debt crisis relatively unscathed; with our oil-rich economy chugging along happily (although time will show how the economy reacts to the recent fall in global oil prices). This privileged state of affairs – for the time being, at least – hasn’t gotten lost on people abroad either. In addition to the big report-writing organizations, people in general have picked up on the huge opportunities that are on offer here – especially for those with the right skills and education. Following the financial crisis this has tempted many to brave chilly winter weather in hope of achieving a better, Nordic life – helping make Oslo the fastest growing capital city in Europe in the process.

SWEET AND SOUR

Of course, not everything is perfect here far from it. And we’re not talking about the weather, or introverted Scandinavians. The travel search engine GoEuro’s 2014 Beer Price Index for 40 major world cities confirms what most locals already suspect: Oslo is the number one most expensive city for a cold one! If you don’t drink, this is your time to feel smug about all the cash you are saving. If you do drink, at least you’re in the officially most prosperous and developed country in the world. Savour the moment.

Terrible Oslo! A blog with the ironic title Stakkars oss (“Poor Us”) has won the hearts of thousands of locals with its humorous and passionate defence of Oslo - the city that parts of the country sometimes loves to hate. Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen Oslo has its share of detractors in the rest of the country. Charges that Oslo is politically prioritized at the expense of other cities and regions, that it is ugly and that crime rates are high, are among the accusations familiar to many capital cities.

- A DECLARATION OF LOVE

Naturally, local patriots couldn’t let such affronts go unanswered!

The graphic designer and freelance journalist founded Stakkars oss in 2012 with freelance journalist Hanna Norberg (33) - both immigrants from other parts of Norway that have wholeheartedly embraced their adopted city.

The blog “Stakkars oss” has taken the city by storm with its tongue-in-cheek ripostes to these kinds of criticisms, posting its own and fan’s photos of all the “terrible” things to see and do in Oslo, such as urban swimming spots, neighbourhood street concerts, Oslo-patriotic or moving street art, majestic summer and winter landscapes and beautiful nature pearls.

- It all started on a fantastically beautiful and idyllic summer’s day on our way to work, Aina Kristiansen (35) tells What’s On Oslo.

- Our urban river Akerselva trickled gently, the birds sang, and everything was green and lovely around us. After having heard so much crap about how terrible it was in Oslo and how unfortunate we locals were in having to stay here, we had had enough, Aina recounts.

- We wanted to show off our city the way we know it. The blog is quite simply a declaration of love for Oslo. We use irony to put all the criticism the city gets in a new light in a lighthearted and humoristic way, she explains. And they certainly have, not only starting a blog, but also opening accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. And all on a mostly non-paid, voluntary basis.

37.000 INSTAGRAM PHOTOS

The two bloggers often use (with permission) pictures that fans post on for instance Instagram and have over 5000 followers on Facebook. #Stakkarsoss has in fact taken on a life of its own on

Instagram, with a massive 37,000 + photos attached to the hashtag at time of writing. The blog has had its own section in an Oslo-focused part of Norway’s largest newspaper Aftenposten. Stakkars oss has also just rounded off a very popular exhibition at the Oslo gallery DogA, and was recently featured in the Japanese edition of Huffington Post, among other media appearances. Many photographers and the people that comment on the photos add their own ironic “insults” about Oslo. A typical post is a picture uploaded to the blog on February 6th, depicting a snow covered suburban field bathed in beautiful beams of sunlight. “Far too bright”, is the title of the photo, accompanied by a mes-

sage from the photographer “lamenting” the much anticipated onset of spring: “I couldn’t take any more of this light everywhere.”

DEFENDING OSLO In fact, the response was overwhelmingly positive from the very beginning. - Pictures and stories streamed in from day one. The media were also quick to get in touch to find out more about the project. It was very clear that here there was a need; a need for a forum where it was OK to loudly declare pride and love for our city. And that’s something we’re very proud of having contributed to, Aina says. - We get lots of really nice emails from people with great stories. People thank us for defending the city, and for displaying the pride and love Oslo-people have perhaps been a bit careful about showing before, she says.

- The people that send in pictures to us are so generous and kind – sharing their photos with us and often telling stories both about the photos and about their own lives in Oslo. It’s quite simply rather touching, adds Aina. The two bloggers are currently busy catching up on other parts of their life, such as their actual paid careers and their family lives. What the next step will be for Stakkars oss is unclear, but according to Aina they have “quite a few dreams and maybe even some plans”. Whatever those dreams and plans are, they are sure to be “terrible”. Poor us!

Discover Oslo’s Art Scene

Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

Meet skilled artists in their private studios and watch art being created! Once a year artists in Oslo open up their studios to the general public. The Oslo Open Art Festival is a unique way to see where art is made and to meet artists outside of the gallery. You don’t have to know anyone and you don’t have to know anything about art. Among the main attractions are no less than 350 artist studios and many of the artists themselves, guided tours, as well as the BOO! Children’s Festival, with studio workshops.

IT’S FREE! Come on your own, with your kids, or join one of the festival’s knowledgeable guides. Everything is free, from the guided tours to children’s workshops and many extra events like concerts, exhibitions and performances. In addition the organizers offer a handy digital GPS-map of all the studios on their website www. osloopen.no. On the website, available in both English and Norwegian, you can also see all of this year’s participating artists. Get in touch with your artistic side together with Oslo’s art world!

Oslo on a Budget

Photo Terje Borud - Visitnorway.com/Vigeland-museet/BONO

It’s perfectly possible to visit or live in Oslo on a relatively low budget with a bit of planning! Here are some tips on how to spend wisely and still have a good time. Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

CHEAP ACTIVITIES: The Oslo Pass gives you free entry to more than 30 museums and attractions, free travel on all public transport, free parking in municipal car parks, free entry to outdoor swimming pools, free walking tours, as well as discounts on sightseeing, ski simulator, Tusenfryd Amusement Park, concert tickets, climbing, ski and bike rental, and special offers in restaurants, shops, entertainment and leisure venues. More information: visitoslo.com/en/ activities-and-attractions/oslo-pass

FREE ACTIVITIES: The Vigeland Sculpture Park inside the beautiful Frogner Park near Majorstua boasts 212 impressive bronze and granite sculptures designed by Gustav Vigeland. You can walk on the roof of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, situated by – and literally sloping into – the sea near the central station, enjoying amazing views of the city, fjord and surrounding hills and islands. Take a long walk and enjoy waterfalls, parks, bridges, swimming spots, historical buildings, bars, cafes, museums and cultural centres along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva, which snakes its way down from the lake Mariadalsvannet by the forest edge to Grønland in the city centre.

The Holmenkollen Ski Jump at Holmenkollen in the hills above Oslo is one of the capital’s most famous landmarks, hosts many winter sporting activities, and the area has great views. There is a ski museum inside the ski jump and an observation deck on top (free with Oslo Pass). The Holmenkollen area (especially from Frognerseteren and Tryvann) is also a great starting point for trips into Nordmarka, the most popular part of the forest around Oslo - with endless possibilities for walks, trekking, biking, skiing and swimming, and with cozy cafes hidden among the trees. Another good starting point for trips into Nordmarka is the forest lake Sognsvann. Both Sognsvann and Holmenkollen are accessible by metro (free with Oslo Pass).

FOOD & DRINK Supermarkets: Rema 1000, Kiwi, Rimi and Bunnpris are among the cheapest supermarkets, and can be found around town. Meny is a more expensive supermarket with a larger selection of more fancy food. Various other supermarkets are also available.

Eating Out: While restaurants can be quite expensive, a good tip is to check out cheaper eateries for instance at Grønland, Grünerløkka

41

and Sofienberg on the east side of town - although there are cheap places on the west side too.

tional, and is located in Kongens gate 7 in the city centre, close to both the central station and Karl Johans gate.

Examples are Tøyengata Bodega in Heimdalsgata 37, Café Sara in Hausmanns gate 29, Fiskeriet Youngstorget at Youngstorget 2, Viet Nam House in Bernt Ankers gate 6B, L’oasis Mazze in Trondheimsveien 14A, as well as Tasty Thai in Thereses gate 51 and Nippon Sushi in Sørkedalsveien 5.

Anker Hostel is centrally located at lower Grünerløkka, in Storgata 53.

Beer: Norway’s high alcohol prices are no big secret, but there are large savings to be had on beer if you know where to go. As with food, many of the cheap places are on Oslo’s east side. Among the very cheapest places are New Choice Pub in Grønland 5, Stargate in Grønland 2, Rett Inn Bar in Storgata 39, Samfunnet Bislet in Pilestredet 52, Evergreen in Pilestredet 39 and Destiny café in Skippergata 26.

ACCOMODATION Hostels: Oslo Central is a hostel that opened summer 2013, has been voted the world’s second best hostel by Hostelling Interna-

Further from town in greener and quieter surroundings you can stay at Oslo Youth Hostel Haraldsheim (city centre=4km), Oslo Hostel Rønningen YMCA (city centre=7.5km) and Oslo Youth Hostel Holtekilen (city centre=8km). Sentrum pensjonat is a pension house/ hostel in Tollbugata 8 in the city centre that includes a dormitory with affordable prices, while Perminalen Hotel is a cheap backpacker hotel also in the city centre, in Øvre Slottsgate 2.

Alternative accommodation: Airbnb.com is a website where you can book a room in a private apartment, or book an entire apartment. Prices are generally cheaper than at hotels. To stay completely for free, try couchsurfing.com. Using this website you can stay for free literally on people’s couches, on a mattress or in a spare room.

Affordable Oslo?

Oslo has fallen from first place in an international ranking – and for once that’s a good thing. We’re not the world’s most expensive city anymore!

Oslo has fallen from first place to third place in an overview of costs in many of the world’s large cities.

expensive, Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten has pointed out in an article about the report.

The report, released by the Economist Intelligence Unit every five years, puts Singapore at number one and Paris at number two.

Costs for many visitors are probably even lower than third place, as for instance hotels are relatively cheap compared with a many cities.

For instance, while Oslo was 50 percent more expensive than New York in 2009, in 2014 we were about 27 percent more

It might still be taking it a bit far to call Oslo cheap, but at least for once third place is better than first!

LEARN NORWEGIAN IN OSLO! Do you want to learn Norwegian like a champion? Now you can with the new school Language Champ – and without breaking the bank! Partner Content (LanguageChamp.no) It’s no secret that the key to really getting ahead in a country is to learn the local language. From getting a job or applying for permanent residency, to talking to people and really understanding local culture, learning the language in your new country is essential.

very effective, says former student Daniela Nuvoli. - The combination of a great teacher and the practical location of the school in the city centre really worked for me, she tells What’s On Oslo.

Unfortunately, so many people speak great English in Oslo that learning Norwegian can be quite a challenge!

As well as group classes, the school also offers private lessons for people that want a course tailored to their particular challenges and abilities.

AFFORDABLE QUALITY

- SMOOTH AND FUN

- We kept hearing complaints that it was really difficult to learn Norwegian because Norwegians often reply in English, says Daniel Paez, one of the founders of the Oslo-based Language Champ.

You sign up by filling out a form on their website (www.languagechamp.no), which also has information about each course.

- Others don’t have enough Norwegian friends to practice, or want to supplement normal talking with professional classes teaching both writing and talking. Many also have to learn Norwegian to get a job or to stay here long term, Daniel points out to What’s On Oslo. Language Champ was founded earlier this year and has already specialized in providing surprisingly affordable but high quality Norwegian lessons. They are conveniently located near Bislett Stadium right in the city centre, making for easy access. Renting real classrooms in a school in the area, they arrange several lessons a week.

- VERY EFFECTIVE - The course helped me to speak well enough to get the job I wanted fast. It’s

- We’re proud that we’ve been able to make the entire learning experience from signing up, to following the classes and walking out the door with your diploma, a smooth and fun journey, Language Champ’s Daniel smiles. - This is about making learning Norwegian as easy and convenient as possible, he concludes. The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945. Several showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions. Symbolic effects, artistic details and authentic artefacts make the long and winding walk through narrow 17th century stone vaults a memorable and educational experience.

CITY SHOPS

Photo: Paleet / Einar Aslaksen

SHOPPING MALLS & DEPARTMENT STORES Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten.no), which has a further 70 shops and is located in the same building as Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”).

Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B/ egerkarljohan. no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house with over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store near Stortinget with many well-known and attractive Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37 / paleet.no) reopened in 2014 as a refurbished, innovative and more upmarket shopping centre that is well worth a visit. At Aker Brygge, the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations have taken place and an attractive new department store opened in 2014 with lots of stores. Large shopping malls outside the city centre include Storo Storsenter (Vitaminveien 7-9 / thonshopping.no/storo), Sandvika

71

Storsenter (Brodtkorpgate 7 / thonshopping.no/sandvika), CC Vest (Lilleakerveien 16 / ccvest.no) and Fornebu S (Snarøyveien 55 / fornebo-s.no).

VINTAGE & SECOND-HAND Most vintage and second-hand stores are found in the Grünerløkka area, although there are some more gems spread around town. GETTING STARTED: Fretex (fretex.no), Norway’s biggest chain of second-hand shops with four shops just in Oslo, is run by the Christian charity Salvation Army Norway. It’s a great place to find clothes at very cheap prices. UFF has two stores in Oslo: UFF Underground (Storgata 1/ uffnorge.org/second-hand/uff-underground) where you can choose from thousands of pieces of trendy second-hand clothes from the ‘50s-‘70s, and UFF Family Store (Jernbanetorget 2 / uffnorge.no) with a more conventional second-hand selection. Fuglen (Universitetsgata 2 / fuglen.no) is a great retro-looking coffee shop and cocktail bar, but “everything” here is also for sale, from the retro chairs and tables to the plates. The vintage shop Frøken Dianas Salonger (Markveien 33 / frokendianassalonger.no) sells hand-picked, custom designed and mostly used clothes, and Robot (Korsgata 22A / trabantclothing. com) focuses on imported vintage, retro and mod clothing, to mention just a few of the places in this hip area.

Tronsmo (Kristian Augusts gate 19 / tronsmo.no) is a specialist book shop focusing on subjects like

ART & ANTIQUES There are quite a lot of places to check out around town for those who would like to get in touch with their artistic or antiquarian sides. Take a stroll and explore beautiful paintings, art magazines, old books, handicrafts and antique furniture. GETTING STARTED: The popular Vestkanttorvet Market (Vestkanttorvet (Professor Dahls gate) / vestkanttorvet. wordpress.com) is Oslo’s oldest market, and the place to go for bric-a-brac and antiques on Sundays. The art shop at the Stenersen Museum (Munkedamsveien 15 / stenersenmuseet.no) has a great selection of art magazines and books, which could come in handy when you visit Blomqvist kunsthandel (Tordenskiolds gate 5 / blomqvist.no), Norway’s largest auction house specializing in local and international art, as well as Norwegian antiques. DESIGN Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours. FOOD & DELICACIES You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate. GETTING STARTED: One of the hottest

SOUVENIRS No visit to Oslo is complete without at least one souvenir! While souvenirs of course can be anything that reminds you of this place and your trip, around the city centre there are places that make it easy for you.

Pur Norsk. Photo: CH - visitnorway.com

GETTING STARTED: No less than three souvenir shops can be found near Oslo City Hall. These are Norway Shop (Fridtjof Nansens plass 9 / norwayshop.com), a big store that sells Norwegian knitwear, gifts and souvenirs, and Holm – Souvenirs & Sweaters (Hieronymus Heyerdalsgate 1 / thv-holm.no), which sells a wide variety of headwear for all occasions, as well as sweaters from Dale of Norway, and various souvenirs and gifts. And once you’ve been to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, why not drop by the Vigeland Visitors’ Centre (Frognerveien 67) just inside the main gates of the park, where you can pick up even more souvenirs.

WINE & DINE

The Nordic way of cooking has undergone a renaissance during the last decade, and Oslo has been building its reputation as a capital of taste at breakneck speed. This means that you can enjoy seafood from the North Sea, moose from Norwegian forests, and locally sourced fruit and vegetables – but also high quality sushi, pizza, curry and other international dishes. Here are some suggested restaurants to explore this month.

AKER BRYGGE & TJUVHOLMEN Along the waterfront at Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen you will meet tourists, business people, everyday locals and the wealthy. This is a great place to go for relatively upmarket food, pubbing and clubbing, and a summer drink at one of the slick waterfront bars with beautiful views of the ocean.

If you’re not planning to dress to impress, Lorrys (Parkveien 12 / lorry.no) is a two floor classic where young and old rub shoulders in rustic and spacious surroundings, while Oslo Mikrobryggeri (Bogstadveien 6 / omb. no) has its very own brewery, and super tasty – you guessed it – beer.

FROGNER & MAJORSTUA

FIND YOUR WAY AROUND

The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying. Drinks are pricier, the dress code stricter, and the see and be seen factor is higher. Guys in suits and girls in glittering dresses are not an uncommon sight.

Check out VisitOSLO’s phone app “Oslo – Official App”, a travel guide which includes updated information about things to get up to, or check out their website at: www.visitoslo.com. Other great places to find events are: www.osloby.no/oslopuls, www.skjerioslo.dittoslo.no and www.underskog.no (which are all in Norwegian). TripAdvisor has a section on activities in Oslo in English. Of course the best way to find out what’s going on is often to check out the venues’ own websites, or by asking fellow night owls.

GETTING STARTED: Enjoy sparkling wines and tapas at Champagneria (Frognerveien 2 / champagneria.com), great cocktails at BAR Bygdøy Allé (Bygdøy allé 18 / bygdoyallerestaurant.no), or shake it on the dance floor at popular Skaugum (Solligata 2 / palacegrill.no/skaugum) bar and (at weekends) club. Trendy club VU (Hegdehaugsveien 24 / vu-oslo.no) has a courtyard, bar, lounge, dance floor and chambre séparée, while Mabou (Hegdehaugsveien 28 / mabou.no) is cramped, intense and flirty. Monkey Bar (Henrik Ibsens gate 60B / monkeybar.no), Nox (Henrik Ibsens gate 100 / clubnox.no) and Soliis Bar & Lounge
