WINTER MAGIC Welcome to What’s On Oslo in November and December, icy winter months that end with cozy and magical celebrations of Christmas and New Year’s Eve. November and December are part of the high season for indoor cultural events, with the cultural calendar of Oslo filled to the brim with great activities.

This is the perfect time to explore the exiting, fascinating, surprising, and often quite simply awe-inspiring exhibitions that Oslo’s brilliant museums has on offer, in between your chilly-but-fresh walks around town.

It just so happens you will find more information about these permanent and temporary exhibitions, covering a wide range of inspiring and eye-opening subjects, in Oslo’s official Museum List in this issue.

Christmas is here For countless people December is of course also the month of holidays, family, gifts, Christmas markets and non-stop coziness.

And speaking of Christmas markets, you can read about Norwegian Museum of Cultural History’s fabulous annual Christmas market on pages 3 and 29.

After all, not much can beat browsing stalls with traditional handicrafts while sipping on some mulled wine (Norwegian: gløgg), as a choir sings traditional Christmas songs in the background and the kids are kept occupied riding a horse and cart.

This is also the final month of the year, rounded off in Oslo with a bang, or rather many bangs, as fireworks celebrate the coming year many places across the city.

Ibsen's Apartment in Oslo

A time capsule The Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen is one of the most influential and frequently staged dramatists in history.

In Oslo lies a physical space that holds great significance — the apartment where Ibsen resided for the final years of his life. This historical space, with a view to the Royal Palace, contains Ibsen's original interiors.

Upon entering Ibsen's apartment, visitors are transported back in time.

The space reflects the style and aesthetics of the late 19th century.

A Home Filled with History A visit to Ibsen Museum & Teater gives visitors the opportunity to explore and experience both his apartment and the new adjacent exhibition.

- His flat has been newly conserved and there are several new objects in the exhibition. It is evident that the audience appreciates that the Ibsen Museum and Teater have finally reopened, Director Nina Refseth enthusiastically tells What’s On Oslo. - We also have a new, smaller exhibition with information about and impressions from his works. Thus, we hope to attract new and interested visitors to the home of one of the world’s greatest playwrights, Refseth says. In December, Ibsen's apartment will be decorated for Christmas.

Ibsen's apartment, nestled in Arbins gate 1, was a haven for the playwright during his final years from 1895 to 1906. Stepping into this preserved space is like entering a time capsule, with Ibsen's original furniture, original colours and décor and personal artifacts adorning the rooms. When Ibsen’s wife Suzannah died in 1914 their home was dismantled, and their furniture scattered. His study and bedroom was deposited at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, the library went to the Henrik Ibsen Museum in Skien and the dining room to The Ibsen Museum in Grimstad. The family retained possession of the remaining furniture. In 1990 actor Knut Wigert took the fateful decision to rent the apartment, based on a wish to make it available to the public. Norwegian Museum of Cultural History took over responsibility for the museum in 1993.

The apartment was equipped with a gas stove and a bathtub, amenities that were considered modern luxuries during Ibsen’s time.

From the very spot where Ibsen sat and wrote, he had a view to The Royal Palace.

Akershus castle was built as a fortified medieval castle around the year 1300.

Since then the castle has been at the centre of events in Norwegian history.

Today it is used for state representation and cultural events. A tour of the castle takes you through the Government representation rooms, The Castle Church, The Royal Mausoleum and The Dungeon.

The museum covers Norwegian military history from the Viking era, through the numerous Nordic wars under Danish rule (1400-1814) to the Napoleonic wars, the union with Sweden 1814-1905, the World War II campaign 1940 and the War at Sea 1939-1945. The latest exhibitions cover the Cold war period 1945-1990 and recent international operations.

At the top of Akershus Fortress lies one of the most central institutions for resistance history in Norway. The main exhibition focuses on the German occupation of Norway, as well as how the resistance against the Nazi occupational regime developed from the 9th of April 1940 until liberation in May 1945.

Founded in 1993, the museum is one of Scandinavia´s most notable museums for contemporary art. At the top of Oslo you can visit Holmenkollen National arena, a site where many ski-historical moments have been created. In the heart of the arena towers Holmenkollen Ski Jump.

On top of the jump tower you can enjoy spectacular views of Oslo and the surrounding areas..

It is a Movie-Ride Theatre.

Experience Downhill Skiing at 130 km/ hour – and Ski-jumping at 100 km/hour.

Ski Simulator next to the Holmenkollen ski jump! Jump in “Kollen” and find out what it feels like to head down the world’s toughest downhill ski slopes alongside the world’s best performers on two skis. Technology which used to be available only to pilots and astronauts combines flight simulator movements with an “eye-­view” movie to create a unique and realistic feel.

Once inside the the Ski Simulator you will get the “ride of your life”, when the skiing starts. Up to 12 people can sit inside at the same time and the whole ride lasts about 5 minutes. “Amazing ride, amazing experience. It made me realize how crazy you have to be to go skiing at 130 km/h and how dangerous it is”.

The Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies, located in Villa Grande, the former residence of the Nazi collaborator Vidkun Quisling, is a research, education and documentation center. Our work focuses on the Holocaust, other genocides, extremism, antisemitisim, hate speech, and the situation of minorities.

At City Hall pier 3 you find our traditional sightseeing boats and sail schooners.

These boats have been taking tourists on the Oslo fjord since 1946.

The 2 hour Fjord Sightseeing has 2 departures every day all winter.

Light warm meals, hot drinks and wine are sold on board.

On the return to the city, we stop at the Museums at Bygdøy at 12.15 and 14.45 Guests taking the first cruise, can go off at 12.15 and visit the five museums for 2 hours and 30 minutes, before taking the next boat back at 14.45 Tickets to the museums are not included, but we sell Oslo Pass, which gives free admission to the museums, and 15 % discount on the boat ticket.
