WINTER IS CALLING! Welcome to What’s On Oslo, your essential guide to events in October and November. It’s autumn and winter is slowly beginning to make itself felt. The flip flops have been ditched even by the biggest summer optimists, and people are going for romantic park strolls in warm coats, hand in gloved hand. October and November are also cultur al months; the perfect time to explore some of the countless indoor events and exhibitions that Oslo has on offer. This issue’s Highlights feature is a great start, with previews of the National Annual Autumn Exhibition and the brilliant Films from the South festival, Oslo World Music Festival, and CODA International Dance Festival. There's our Event Calendar with lots of other interesting things to get up to, museum listings with a detailed over view of Oslo’s latest exhibitions, and handy guides to restaurants, nightlife and shopping, mean you don’t need to have a dull moment.

Then there is our regular Oslo People interview, this time with the engaging director of one of Oslo’s most unusual museums - The International Museum of Children’s Art. November is also an early-starter Christmas month for those who just can’t wait any longer. If you are one of those, you may well appreciate our guide to the season’s first Christmas markets. In addition we include a major guide for those who liked the idea of strolling hand in hand around town, or simply enjoy a fantastic walk. What we are talking about is none oth er than Oslo’s newest stroll highlight, a dockside promenade stretching almost 10 kilometres (!). Officially opened earlier this year, this mega-promenade lets you enjoy everything from solitude and majestic sea views, to seaside drinking, dining and shopping. Enjoy! Team What’s On Oslo.

03.10.2015 – 17.01.2016 VIGELAND+MUNCH

For the first time a major dual exhibition will be devoted to two giants in the history of Norwegian art, Edvard Munch (18631944) and Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). They worked during the same period. One primarily as a painter and printmaker, the other as a sculptor. They were affiliated with the same circles and influenced by the same contemporary art movements. And for a period they both lived and worked – even in adjoining rooms – in Berlin. Many are of the opinion that the two were rivals. This exhi bition wishes to clarify the connections between them by presenting their artistic careers side by side, from the time they began study ing at The Royal College of Design in Kristiania, to the time they became well-es tablished artists at Ekely and Frogner respectively.

Oslo’s brand new Harbour Promenade offers impressive sea views, parks, resting spots, art installations, iconic or interesting architecture, and opportuni ties for shopping, eating and drinking. Stretching a massive 10 kilometres from the inner city’s western border at Frognerkilen, to its eastern border by Kongshavn, it is an important part of the ambitious long-term project to turn Oslo into The Fjord City. For years the forces behind this project have been busy replacing things like container terminals and industrial shipping ports with development projects that make the seafront much more accessible and attractive.

major examples include the Opera House, Aker Brygge, the modernistic new districts of Tjuvholmen and Bjør vika, fjord swimming facilities, as well as the new Munch Museum and main public library that are due to open near the Opera House in the coming years. 14 chunky metal containers painted in impossible-to-miss orange and marked from 1 (beginning) to 14 (end) are strategically placed at important points along the promenade. Texts attached to one side of the containers give a crash course in the history of that particular area. In the following guide we use the same numbers from 1 to 14 on our map and in the text, making it easier for you to find your way.

PROMENADE GUIDE

01

FROGNERKILEN:

If you start your walk at the orange container marked “1”, you begin at Frognerkilen in Western Oslo. Frogner kilen is a bay east of the Bygdøy penin sula. As you begin your walk eastwards from here, you will pass along a stretch of docks with lots of boats belonging to people living in and near Oslo

02

KONGEN MARINA:

Stop number two along the way is at Kongen Marina, a pretty little marina with boats and a seaside restaurant where it is possible to sit outside right by the boats when weather permits.

03

FILLIPSTAD:

VIKA:

Vika is a historically significant neigh bourhood which you can read more about on container number 4.

05

TJUVHOLMEN:

Right before the famous Aker Brygge dock area you arrive at Tjuvholmen, re cently relaunched as an ultra-modern seaside neighbourhood with cultural offerings, restaurants and bars. Major points of interest include the impres sive Astrup Fearnley Museum and the small urban pebble beach beside it.

This is a dock which only recently opened to the public and is in develop ment. So far a simple outdoor activity area with lighting, benches and calist henics equipment for working out has been established. In addition the dock’s old warehouse has one side covered in a huge artwork by the Norwegian artist Pushwagner.

04

06

VESTBANEN:

After Tjuvholmen you pass through Aker Brygge, with even more bars, restaurants, shops and great sea views, before arriving at Vestbanen. In this area you find the Nobel Peace Center, with exhibitions related to the Nobel Peace Prize. Vestbanen also has a harbor with a mix of new and classical boats, and Oslo City Hall towers nearby.

55

07

AKERSHUSSTRANDA:

As you continue walking along the fjord, you will see the magnificent Akerhus Fortress on your left and perhaps some more classical ships docked seaside. Eventually you arrive at container number 7, in an area where ferries dock.

VIPPETANGEN:

Container number 8 is based at Vippetangen. This area is notable for its old corn silo building, and was the place to go to catch a boat to the nea足 rest islands in the Oslo fjord until the terminal was moved to Aker Brygge this year. An increasingly popular place for people to sit and fish in the fjord, the local authorities have even instal足 led a bench for gutting the fish.

14

08

09

LANGKAIA:

The next stretch moves away from the sea for a while (because the dock area is closed while being developed), before you end up at container 9 at Langkaia. This is a great viewing spot where you can see the Opera House perched impressively on the other side of the dock, as well as the new Barcode skyscrapers behind it. There are also a couple of art installations here.

BJØRVIKA:

Bjørvika is the home of the Opera House, one of Oslo’s most popu lar landmarks. It has magnificent architecture and you can walk on its roof and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area. Immediately east of the Opera House, Oslo’s urban river Akerselva quietly flows into the fjord.

11

SUKKERBITEN:

In the sea behind the Opera House lies Sukkerbiten (“The Sugar Lump”); a tiny artificial “island” in concrete and partially covered with grass that has serving facilities and cultural activities in the summer.

- I mostly catch mackerel, about 10 a day, but it depends how long you sit here – I’ve seen people catch crates of fish, says Harry Iversen (54), comfortably seated at Vippetangen.

12

12

SØRENGA:

From Sukkerbiten a floating bridge allows you to stroll straight over to Sørenga; until recently a container port off limits to most, but now a vibrant new district. Sørenga has apartments, cafes and restaurants, and Sørenga bad - a popular human-made sea bat hing facility that opened this summer with a sandy beach, pools with sea water and a diving board.

13

LOHAVN:

As you continue out beyond Sørenga, you will arrive at container number 13 at Lohavn. Now you are in an area which is mostly still to be redeveloped. Today it is dominated by nearby roads and rail way lines, but plans are afoot to create a park and other more inviting spaces.

58

14

KONGSHAVN:

The Harbour Promenade ends (or be gins) at Kongshavn, another area which will be developed in the future. This area will house Norway’s biggest con tainer terminal, but a big park will act as a buffer and ensure a pleasant end to future walks along the promenade.

WHEN AUTHENTICITY MATTERS

In a rustic and cozy atmosphere we’ll serve you tasty food experiences with authentic flavours. Tender meat, fish and shellfish are prepared on a Josper charcoal grill in the center of the restaurant giving a unique taste and juiciness.

Oslo on a Budget It’s perfectly possible to visit or live in Oslo on a relatively low budget with a bit of planning! Here are some tips on how to spend wisely and still have a good time. Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

CHEAP ACTIVITIES:

The Oslo Pass gives you free entry to more than 30 museums and attractions, free travel on all public transport, free parking in municipal car parks, free entry to outdoor swimming pools, free walking tours, as well as discounts on sightseeing, ski simulator, Tusenfryd Amusement Park, concert tickets, climbing, ski and bike rental, and special offers in restaurants, shops, entertainment and leisure venues. More information: visitoslo.com/en/ activities-and-attractions/oslo-pass

FREE ACTIVITIES:

The Vigeland Sculpture Park inside the beautiful Frogner Park near Major stua boasts 212 impressive bronze and granite sculptures designed by Gustav Vigeland. You can walk on the roof of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, situated by – and literally sloping into – the sea near the central station, enjoying amazing views of the city, fjord and surrounding hills and islands. Take a long walk and enjoy waterfalls, parks, bridges, swimming spots, historical buildings, bars, cafes, museums and cultural centres along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva, which snakes its way down from the lake

60

Mariadalsvannet by the forest edge to Grønland in the city centre. The Holmenkollen Ski Jump at Holmenkollen in the hills above Oslo is one of the capital’s most famous land marks, hosts many winter sporting activities, and the area has great views. There is a ski museum inside the ski jump and an observation deck on top (free with Oslo Pass). The Holmenkollen area (especially from Frognerseteren and Tryvann) is also a great starting point for trips into Nordmarka, the most popular part of the forest around Oslo - with endless possibilities for walks, trekking, biking, skiing and swimming, and with cozy cafes hidden among the trees. Another good starting point for trips into Nordmarka is the forest lake Sognsvann. Both Sognsvann and Holmenkollen are accessible by metro (free with Oslo Pass).

FOOD & DRINK Supermarkets:

Rema 1000, Kiwi, Rimi and Bunnpris are among the cheapest super markets, and can be found around town. Meny is a more expensive supermarket with a larger selection of more fancy food. Various other super markets are also available.

Eating Out:

While restaurants can be quite expen sive, a good tip is to check out cheaper eateries for instance at Grønland, Grünerløkka and Sofienberg on the east side of town - although there are cheap places on the west side too. Examples are Tøyengata Bodega in Heimdalsgata 37, Café Sara in Haus manns gate 29, Fiskeriet Youngstorget at Youngstorget 2, Viet Nam House in Bernt Ankers gate 6B, L’oasis Mazze in Trondheimsveien 14A, as well as Tasty Thai in Thereses gate 51 and Nippon Sushi in Sørkedalsveien 5.

Beer: Norway’s high alcohol prices are no big secret, but there are large savings to be had on beer if you know where to go. As with food, many of the cheap places are on Oslo’s east side. Among the very cheapest places are Stargate in Grønland 2, Rett Inn Bar in Storgata 39, Samfunnet Bislet in Pilestredet 52, Evergreen in Pilestredet 39 and Destiny café in Skippergata 26.

ACCOMODATION Hostels:

summer 2013, has been voted the world’s second best hostel by Hos telling International, and is located in Kongens gate 7 in the city centre, close to both the central station and Karl Johans gate. Anker Hostel is centrally located at lower Grünerløkka, in Storgata 53. Further from town in greener and quieter surroundings you can stay at Oslo Youth Hostel Haraldsheim (city centre=4km), Oslo Hostel Rønningen YMCA (city centre=7.5km) and Oslo Youth Hostel Holtekilen (city centre=8km). Sentrum pensjonat is a pension house/hostel in Tollbugata 8 in the city centre that includes a dormitory with affordable prices, while Perminalen Hotel is a cheap backpacker hotel also in the city centre, in Øvre Slottsgate 2.

Alternative accommodation: Airbnb.com is a website where you can book a room in a private apartment, or book an entire apartment. Prices are generally cheaper than at hotels. To stay completely for free, try couchsurfing. com. Using this website you can stay for free literally on people’s couches, on a mattress or in a spare room.

SHOPPING MALLS & DEPARTMENT STORES

Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten.no), which has a further 70 shops and is located in the same building as Oslo Central Station. In Oslo Central Station itself, the oldest section of the building originally the station terminal dating to the 1850s – reopened in February 2015 after a little over a year of refurbish ments with the name Ø (Jernbanetorget 1 / ostbanehallen.no), an attractive new dining and shopping area, which also has a hotel and Oslo Visitor Cen tre (the new tourist information office).

Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37 / paleet. no) reopened in 2014 as a refurbished, innovative and more upmarket shop ping centre that is well worth a visit. At Aker Brygge (akerbrygge.no), the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations have taken place and an attractive new shopping area opened in 2014 with lots of stores. FOOD & DELICACIES

You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate.

DESIGN

Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours. OSLO PEOPLE

s n u R e Sh f o e r v “the Lou ’s Art” n e r d l i Ch You run a museum dedicated to children’s art. Why? I am continuing the legacy of my parents. I grew up with the museum and with my mother Alla Goldin and stepfather Rafael Goldin, who conceived and developed the idea of the museum, and opened it in 1986. When my stepfather died in 1994, I kept the museum going with my mother. When my mother suddenly died in 2007, I continued the legacy. My parents wanted to establish a permanent museum focused on, presenting and documenting for the future the art which children and young people create themselves. In the 1980’s that was a unique concept aro und the world, and it still is in Norway. In fact, while there are museums dedicated to children’s art in a number of countries today, some of which we helped out getting started, we are one of the few with a permanent international collection. That’s why we call it The International Museum of Children’s Art.

68

Who: Angela Goldin, director of The International Museum of Children’s Art in Lille Frøens vei 4, Oslo. Next year the museum celebrates its 30th anniversary. Age: 47. Lives: Vinderen on Oslo’s west side. From: Half Russian and half Ugandan, grew up in Oslo and in Bærum near Oslo. Interviewed: September 10th, by Tarjei Kidd Olsen.

"I am continuing the legacy of my parents, says - director Angela Goldin. Here from the museum's Doll Room.

The discovery that my parents made, was that there were no places that children and adults could go to see and learn what children have created throughout the history of time. What is children’s art, really? Is it stuff created by adults for children, or should we turn things on their head and say that, “Wow, children are creating things by themselves, for themselves and others.” Another special thing with this museum is that it includes art from children all the way up to the age of 18. That’s because we follow The United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is an international constitution of children’s rights. The reason we follow the UN convention is that children’s rights are still not being respected in many instances, and article

31 in the convention says that children have a human right “to rest and leisure – and to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts”. Furthermore, take a venerated artist; let’s say Munch; even he was a child once, and naturally that in reality is when the creative process starts for everyone. We want to document that early creative process. This has a long term value in relation to our history and to how we develop as people and as a society. What sort of children’s art does the museum have? We have mainly pictures, but also texts, textiles and 3D-installations.

69

*

The museum has more than 150.000 artworks created by children.

This is just a guess, but I think that we are sitting on one of the biggest collections of children’s art in the world. We have at least 150.000 artworks. In our permanent collection we have counted artworks from 185 different countries. That’s an enormous collection! Indeed! Unfortunately though, we don’t have enough space to display more than a tiny fraction of these artworks. I am hoping that we can move to a much bigger space in a few years, if we can get the crucial combined political and private support that is needed. We haven’t in the past, but we are working to move things forward in time. My dream – and it is only my personal

70

dream, I can’t speak for other people that also have a say – is that we end up moving to the Bjørvika area near the Opera House in about three years, when the new Munch Museum has been built nearby. The New York Times once wrote: “There are many museums for children, but Oslo has a museum by children.” And quite a few years back the Smithsonian Magazine, which is a kind of a National Geographic magazi ne for history and culture, referred to us as: “The Louvre of children’s Art”. Do you have any children yourself? No. I am married to the museum! You’re laughing, and indeed it sounds funny for many people, but I really have dedicated my life to this. I work on it all the time. It has been my

Taking children seriously, investing in them and letting them be citizens in their own right while they are still litt le, and not just counting and weighing and analyzing them like objects, is incredibly rewarding. Listening to what they have to say. Children have an incredible amount of wisdom. They can be philosophical and they can also correct the adults. We have to get a bit away from this attitude that it is always the adults that should teach children. Children often have things to teach us as well. Even after having worked on this for so long, I never cease to be surprised. Children have so many different creati ve personalities. A final question. What do you like to get up to in Oslo when you aren’t working on the museum? Are there places or experiences you would like to recommend to our readers? I am totally buried with work here at the museum, so I’m maybe not the right person to ask! It’s a little parado xical, as with so much travel I pick up on a lot happening out in the big, wide world, but not so much here at home.

destiny. I didn’t make any kind of early decision; things just developed that way in a natural process. I imagine that a job that involves meeting children around the world can lead to some interesting experiences. Do you have any anecdotes that you would like to share? I wouldn’t say anecdotes, but I do meet children with very different backgro unds and very different starting points in their lives. I have worked with children in prisons and refugee camps, with AIDS, from the upper class west side of Oslo, and from completely average schools. That has a huge importance for me. These are after all tomorrow’s leaders; maybe a firefighter or police officer, or the next prime minister!

The exception is when certain guests from foreign institutions arrive at the museum, and I end up showing them places around town that are listed in for instance What’s On Oslo. And what I have noticed is that a lot of new things are happening. The city is becoming more diverse and urban, so things are “vibrating” now! Also, since I spend a lot of time inside the museum, it’s a great release to get out into nature. The thing that is so nice with Oslo, is that there’s a very short distance to the forest and sea. You can be on a boat in the fjord, and a short time later turn up at Holmenkol len with a 360 degrees panorama view of the city. ■

CLUBS &BARS Oslo’s nightlife is anything but boring. There are countless pubs, bars, clubs and concerts to choose from and the atmosphere is friendly and inviting.

CITY CENTRE & KARL JOHANS GATE

In the city centre you can move and shake to whatever is most popular at the moment. The area also boasts several jazz and blues clubs. GETTING STARTED: At Oslo’s oldest rock bar Last Train (Karl Johans gate 45 / lasttrain.no), Norwegian and inter national bands perform on a regular basis. 34 Skybar (Sonja Henies plass 3 / radissonblu.com/plazahotel-oslo/dining/skybar-34), a bar on the 34th floor of Radisson Plaza Blu Hotel behind the Oslo City shopping centre, has large windows with an impressive panoramic view of the city and fjord. Jaeger (Grensen 9 / jaegeroslo.no) is a popular club with electronic music and DJs most nights. Hip IZAKAYA (St. Olavs Gate 7 / izakayaoslo.com) is a Japanese bar with authentic Japanese food and drinks, where enthusiastic bartenders wax lyrical about sake and shochu.

no) is a café in the daytime that turns into a hugely popular (and cramped) bar in the evenings. Bar and concert stage Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11 / parkteatret.no) is equally popular, as is Blå (Brenneriveien 9 / blaaoslo. no) – originally mainly a jazz club in an old riverside factory that also hosts lively DJ-nights and concerts of all kinds. BAR Vulkan (Maridalsveien 17 / www.barsocialeating.no) is a fancy bar known for its tasty cocktails and (in summer) large roof terrace, rockabilly-inspired Ryes (Thorvald Meyers gate 59 / facebook.com/RyesOslo) is a great place for a twirl on the dance floor, Bar Boca (Thorvald Meyers gate 30 / facebook.com/pages/ Bar-Boca/284273994971781?fref=ts) with its tasteful ‘50s/’60s interior has professional bartenders and great drinks, and Schouskjelleren Mikrobryggeri (Trondheimsveien 2 / schouskjelleren.no) is an atmospheric basement micro-brewery with a large selection of beers. Norway’s first food hall Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17

GRÜNERLØKKA

Just northeast of the city centre is Grünerløkka, with active music venues that make concerts an important part of the borough’s nightlife. Many of the area’s popular cafés turn into hot spots in the evening, and this is one of the most popular areas for partygoers in general and hipsters in particular. GETTING STARTED: Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40 / fruhagen.

/ mathallenoslo.no) has a number of in teresting bars, including Smelteverket (smelteverketoslo.no) with the city’s longest bar disk, great food and mini concerts.

GRØNLAND

Grønland on the east side of town offers a refreshing blend of friendly and laidback clubs with varied music offerings, as well as slightly ragged bars with some of the cheapest beer in town.

73

© Beer Palace © BAR Tjuvholmen

GETTING STARTED: Dattera til Hagen (Grønland 10 / dattera.no) is a colourful bar and café with two floors and a big, charming backyard. Ivars kro (Grønland 14 / ivarskro.no) is a pi anobar with live music every night and a large bar with a good selection of drinks, while Oslo Mekaniske Verksted (Tøyenbekken 34 / oslomekaniskeverksted.no) is a big and cozy bar/pub with a big fireplace, board games, comfy sofas - and a theatre in the same building. Caféteatret (Hollendergata 8 / cafeteatret.no) is a multicultural bar, concert and theatre stage that includes popular open stage nights, and Pigalle (Grønlandsleiret 15 / olympen.no) featu res a mostly original ‘60s interior and music from the ‘60s and ‘70s.

and genres such as house, techno and dub step. In the basement of the bar Revolver (Møllergata 32 / revolveroslo. no) young crowds dance the night away to 80s pop, rock and disco. Cafe Sør (Torggata 11 / cafesor.no) is another very popular place with nice drinks and great music, as well as the relatively low age limit of 20 (22 after midnight on weekends). Angst Bar (Torggata 11 / facebook.com/pages/ ANGST-BAR/210106519005748) is a bar in a passageway called Strøget which is hip, intimate, with great music and lots of art on the walls (also backyard parties during weekends).

YOUNGSTORGET

In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places with a more alternative/rock-oriented music profile, as well as a couple of clubs devoted to electronic music. GETTING STARTED: Kulturhuset (Youngstorget 3 / kulturhusetioslo.no) covers a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar and shuffle board. Café Mono (Pløens gate 4 / cafemono.no) is a dark and relaxed bar/pub/concert stage that plays a lot of rock, alterna tive rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2 / internasjonalen.no), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25 / thevilla.no), Fisk & Vilt (Pløens gate 4 / fiskogvilt.no) and Turkish Delight (Torggata 35 / turkish. no) appeal to the electronic music crowd, with local and international DJs

AKER BRYGGE & TJUVHOLMEN

Along the waterfront at Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen you will meet tourists, business people, everyday locals and the wealthy. This is a great place to go for relatively upmarket food, pubbing and clubbing, and a summer drink at

one of the slick waterfront bars with beautiful views of the ocean. GETTING STARTED: BAR Tjuvholmen (Bryggegangen 6 / barsocialeating. no) is a stylish and popular bar and restaurant on the waterfront in Oslo’s newest completed neighbourhood, and a great place for cocktails. Drink in style in Tjuvholmen’s only hotel bar at designer hotel The Thief (Landgangen 1 / thethief.com). Beer Palace (Holmens

while Mabou (Hegdehaugsveien 28 / mabou.no) is cramped, intense and flirty. Monkey Bar Oslo (Henrik Ibsens gate 60B / facebook.com/MONKEYoslo), Nox (Henrik Ibsens gate 100 / clubnox. no) and Soliis Bar & Lounge (Henrik Ibsens gate 90 / soliis.no) are popular nightspots on and near Solli Plass. gate 3 / beerpalace.no) is located in the oldest building at Aker Brygge, and their motto is that everyone likes beer, but not everyone has found a type they like yet. And why not head over to Jacob Aall Brasserie & Bar Aker Brygge (Stranden 63 / jacobaall.no), where you can sip on some exotic drinks.

FROGNER & MAJORSTUA

The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying. Drinks are pricier, the dress code stricter, and the see and be seen factor is higher. Guys in suits and girls in glittering dresses are not an uncommon sight. GETTING STARTED: Enjoy sparkling wines and tapas at Champagneria (Frognerveien 2 / champagneria.com), great cocktails at BAR Bygdøy Allé (Bygdøy allé 18 / barsocialeating.no), or shake it on the dance floor at popular Skaugum (Solligata 2 / palacegrill.no/ skaugum) bar and (at weekends) club. Trendy club VU (Hegdehaugsveien 24 / vu-oslo.no) has a courtyard, bar, loun ge, dance floor and chambre séparée,

spacious surroundings, while Oslo Mikrobryggeri (Bogstadveien 6 / omb. no) has its own brewery, and super tasty – you guessed it – beer.

FIND YOUR WAY AROUND Check out VisitOSLO’s phone app “Oslo – Official City App”, a travel guide which includes updated information about things to get up to, or check out their website at www.visitoslo. com. You can also read What’s On Oslo online at www.whatsonoslo.no. Other great places to find events are: www.osloby.no/oslopuls, tjenester.nettavisen.no/kundeweb/ dittoslo/kalender/ and www.underskog.no (which are all in Norwegian). TripAdvisor has a section on activities in Oslo in English. Of course, the best way to find out what’s going on is often to check out the venues’ own websites, or by asking fellow night owls.

75

HOW TO GET AROUND

Short distances and convenient public transportation make it easy to get about in Oslo. On the following pages you will find maps and other information that will help you get around and see all the city has to offer.

76

@ The City Hall harbour

* On the maps pages you will find numbers that correspond with the numbers for each of the museum listings earlier in the magazine.*

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN OSLO RUTER’S CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTRE Located in the clock tower outside Oslo Central Station, the customer service centre provides information about time tables, tickets and fares in Oslo and the surrounding area. The centre also sells tickets for public transport in Oslo and the surrounding areas. Address: Jernbanetorget 1. Tel.: (from Oslo/Akershus): 177 Tel.: (from out of town): + 47 815 00 176 ruter.no

TICKETS Oslo’s local buses, trams, ferries and the metro share a ticket system. Single tickets can be purchased from the driver, but are cheaper if you buy them in advance. On the metro, tickets must be purchased before entering the train. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines and ticket offices at the metro stations, Oslo Visitor Centre, Østbanehallen, Jernbanetorget 1, in ki osks including Narvesen, 7-Eleven and Deli de Luca, and at Ruter’s Service Centre at Jernbanetorget (in front of Oslo Central Station).

TICKET PRICES

Single ticket (on board): NOK 50 Single ticket (in advance): NOK 30 24-hour ticket: NOK 90 7-day ticket: NOK 240 30-day ticket: NOK 680 (students: NOK 410) Children under age 4 travel for free. Children ages 4-15 and seniors ages 67+ pay half price. All tickets are valid for one hour.

TRAM Oslo has six tram lines that run through the city from east to west. The route network primarily covers the inner city, but a couple of longer routes go out to the residential areas west, south and north of the city centre

METRO (T-BANE) Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All branch lines and the ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jern banetorget (Oslo Central Station).

BUS Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station. Many of the most popular bus routes are cross connections, including 20, which passes both the Munch Museum and the Vigeland Park.
