With its 1000 year old history, Oslo is the oldest of the Nordic capitals. The city, surrounded by islands and forested hills, is situated at the end of one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. From the Viking age until today, people have looked to this place as a safe haven for trade, industry and cultural enrichment. Today, Oslo has a population of 600.000 inhabitants, and is the nation’s financial, political and cultural centre. Allow yourself the time to wander in the city’s streets, parks, forests or along the fjord, and get a feel for the capital’s abundant history in its character. Oslo is the capital of the changing seasons. The surrounding countryside makes its mark on the city’s inhabitants and buildings and the people’s rhythm and life-style changes with the weather. You will be able to discover a city which is full of life all year round, both in the narrow streets and in the vast forests. Oslo is a city of variation and contrast. Oslo is also Munch’s and Ibsen’s city. The art and cultural life reflect the fact that the inhabitants of Oslo come from all over the country and from all parts of the World. The city can offer unique sights and meaningful experiences, many of which are presented in this guide. Useful information may be found at www.visitoslo.com, or at our tourist information centre by the City Hall, open every day all year round. On behalf of Oslo we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors, promising an exciting and surprising experience. Welcome to Oslo!

meet the vikings! What is so fascinating about these Vikings, where can you find some, and why do tourists run to Oslo’s Viking Ship Museum to gawk at really, really old ships?

Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen The Vikings were people from the areas known collectively as Scandinavia today, which engaged in commercial and military expeditions to different parts of Europe from around the 8th to 11th centuries. A thousand years later, they seem as popular as ever. Ellen Marie Næss, an archeologist and guide at Oslo’s Viking Ship Museum on Bygdøy, almost laughs when What’s On Oslo asks her why people are so fascinated by Vikings. - Is there anything with Vikings that isn’t exiting? For Næss, working at a museum that houses the three famous Vikings ships Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune and receives about 450,000 visitors per year, Vikings are exiting in countless ways.

VIKINGS HAVE EVERYTHING - Vikings have everything. They lived so far in the past that they are in an exciting mythological world, but so recently that we have what we hope is some factual knowledge thanks to both archaeology and written sources, Næss says. - Also, people’s fascination with Vikings hasn’t exactly gotten smaller after all the fantasy

Viking market (Sept 5-7): The Gjallarstadir Viking Market is held once a year in Lillestrøm, a city just outside Oslo and with quick and easy access via train or car. Last year’s market included activities such as a Viking “battle”, archery, storytelling, a flame show, Viking food and handicrafts. The first day is only for special invitees, while the next two days are for everyone. Location: Badeveien 1, Lillestrøm. Web: gjallarstadirviking.no

movies that have been made in recent years, even if they haven’t directly dealt with Vikings. Vikings feed our desire for adventure, and the known facts allow us to learn about a real culture, while the myths and unknowns let us toy with our imaginations, she says. The Vikings have in fact had an important and even worshipped place in Scandinavian collective memories numerous times during the past 1000 years. In Norway, beliefs and myths about them served an important nationalistic function following independence from Denmark in 1814, and particularly during the 1840s to 1940s. While a more nuanced view of the Vikings’ brutal and more peaceful habits and customs have prevailed since, their reputation as fearsome warriors raiding foreign lands is still dominant among many.

VIKINGS EVERYWHERE There is no doubt that Vikings capture the public imagination, and luckily there are lots of ways to feed this curiosity. In addition to the Viking Ship Museum, the Museum of Cultural History near the Royal Palace has a permanent Viking exhibition, while there are lots of Viking-related attractions in museums and out in the open in other parts of the country.

07

These include the mounds where the Oseberg and Gokstad ships (now at the Viking Ship Museum) were found in Vestfold county, the Midtgard historical centre outside the city of Horten, the Loftr Viking Museum on the Lofoten Islands, the Viking Valley Market in Gudvangen, and the Stiklestad National Cultural Centre in Stiklestad, which also arranges a famous festival and play.

he in fact has enough material for two movies and a TV-series. Last year it also emerged that Barry Osborne, producer on movies such as The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix and The Great Gatsby, hopes to make a big budget movie trilogy about Norwegian Viking king Harald Hardråde. He has already scouted for filming locations on the island of Karmøy, an important area for Vikingrelated archaeology and sights. And in a few years the same Karmøy may see the opening of Vikingland, the world’s first Viking-oriented theme park. While the location hasn’t been confirmed yet, the organizers have professional help with the project itself - having enlisted a company that contributed to the development of Disney Land, Universal Studios and SeaWorld.

- WORLD’S BEST VIKING MUSEUM From History Channel’s series The Vikings Most recently, History Channel’s hit TVseries The Vikings has drawn millions of viewers and further fuelled interest in the period. In March the series was renewed for a third season.

MOVIES AND A THEME PARK More treats are in store: critically acclaimed Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland is planning to start filming what he claims will be the first well-made and historically realistic Viking film in 2016, about a Viking who is press-ganged into joining a raid in Spain. The director says

Back in Oslo, initial planning for a new Viking museum on the grounds of the Viking Ship Museum, but three times larger and with a significantly expanded offering, has begun. - We have the biggest and best collection of Viking ships and artefacts in the world. We have a fantastic collection, but it is split between the Viking Ship Museum and the Historical Museum, Ellen Marie Næss tells What’s On Oslo. - What we want to do is to unite the swords, jewelry and everyday artefacts at the Historical Museum with the ships, and create the world’s best Viking museum, she says. Stay tuned!

Clash of the Seasons! Welcome to What’s On Oslo in September, a lively month where summer meets autumn and outdoor activities are complimented by indoor activities. September usually signals the end of the hot season, for many work began a month ago, the school year has started, and most people are back to reality after their summer holidays. This means that the city is filled with locals again, but the cooling weather means that you may be likelier to find many of them in a café or bar than at the (still worth visiting) parks, beaches and islands that are so popular when it’s hot outside. One great indoor activity to get up to is museum hopping, and one of the most popular museums in Oslo is the Viking Ship Museum. In this issue we feature an article on the Vikings, and where to find them. Another indoor activity that is definitely going to be attended by enthusiastic Norwegians is the Lady Gaga concert at the end of the month! Take a look at our revealing feature on this controversial artist. Of course, chilly weather is nothing new for locals and there are still plenty of things to explore outside. Maybe you’d even like to go exploring with someone who knows what they’re talking about? Well, there’s a guide for that! In our article on three walking tour companies you’ll get an introduction to some of the walking tours you can join, and who to contact. Of course, some of our most famous citizens don’t care about the weather at all, and stand proud outside every single day of the year. In our fascinating story on the secret life of statues, you’ll meet some of these hardy individuals and discover where to find them. Enjoy! What’s On Oslo team

Gaga-facts: Concert: Lady Gaga’s Artrave: The Artpop Ball Tour comes to Telenor Arena near Oslo on Sept 29. Location: Telenor Arena, Widerøeveien 1, 1360 Fornebu. Tickets: billettservice.no Official website: ladygaga.com Littlemonsters.com: Launched in 2012, this the first official social network devoted to fans of an artist – in this case “Mother Monster” Gaga’s “Little Monsters”.

Lady Gaga, or “Mother Monster” to her most devout fans, is way more than the music: she is pop art on two feet.

art pop gaga

Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen All over Norway the fans of American singer/songwriter Lady Gaga, “Mother Monster” Gaga’s so-called “Little Monsters”, are gearing up for her concert at Telenor Arena at the end of this month. The concert is part of Lady Gaga’s Artrave: The Artpop Ball Tour and is tied to the release of her album Artpop, which debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 sales chart in November last year. But as the album title perhaps suggests, Gaga, who rose to prominence in 2008 and has had a string of massive hits and endless media coverage, is at least as well known for her eye-popping fashion sense as for her music.

Raw beef dress

In 2010 a reviewer in the British newspaper The Telegraph opined that she has “the musicality and showmanship of Michael Jackson and the powerful sexuality and provocative instincts of Madonna.” She famously worse a dress made of raw beef - along with raw beef boots, purse and hat - to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, garnering massive attention, fashion awards - and the fury of some animal rights activists. Lady Gaga’s wardrobe isn’t limited to fresh meat however. For anyone familiar

with the American 28-year old’s work, a cavalcade of eccentric and over the top outfits inevitably come to mind.

Haus of Gaga

Her colourful and determinedly unabashed style has been compared to 1980’s “excesses”, while she has referenced the fashion styles of artists such as Cher, Madonna and Britney Spears, called Donatella Versace her muse and the late fashion designer and friend Alexander McQueen an inspiration. She has her own creative production team, handled personally, who create many of her clothes, stage props and hairstyles. She calls the team Haus of Gaga. The Haus part of the name is inspired by Germany’s former Bauhaus art school (1919-1933) that became a highly influential modernist power house, while the concept is modelled on Andy Warhol’s Factory. But her attention grabbing, overwhelming fashion sense doesn’t mean that she lacks artistic ambitions for the music itself. When Gaga released her second studio album, Born This Way, in 2011, she described it as “something so much deeper than a wig or lipstick or a f*****g meat dress”.

Fear and parties

She tries to constantly reinvent herself, and while she said that Born This Way was about “what keeps us up at night

13

and keeps us afraid”, focusing on themes such as sex, love, religion, money, drugs, identity, liberation, sexuality, freedom, and individualism, Artpop (her third studio album) was about “having a really good time” and “a night out at the club”. Her musical style has been described as electro-pop and dance-pop and comparisons have been been made with elements from various electro genres as well as r&B, disco, heavy metal and much more. She has been compared to Madonna and Gwen Stefani. Lady Gaga herself says she grew up influenced by artists such as

Queen (“Gaga” is inspired by Queen’s song Radio Ga Ga), Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead and Stevie Wonder.

Aiming for revolution

In 2011 her influence on modern culture and meteoric rise to fame led a sociologist at the University of South Carolina to found a course titled “Lady Gaga and the Sociology of the Fame” with the objective of unravelling “some of the sociologically relevant dimensions of the fame of Lady Gaga”. (Ironically this garnered so much global media attention that the professor, a self-professed Gaga-fan, became somewhat of a celebrity in his own right.) Others however have criticized her style as actually being a “mainstream manufactured product”, or pointed out that her fans are not primarily the outsiders, the

“drag queens and freaks”, that she references in her shows. And yet it’s doubtful that the artist herself is too concerned by the charges of being mainstream, in 2011 stating that “I don’t want to sound presumptuous, but I’ve made it my goal to revolutionize pop music. The last revolution was launched by Madonna 25 years ago.”

“Family girl” sadomasochism

Her elaborate stage shows are no less ambitious – or controversial and varied.

She has explored themes such as bondage and sadomasochism, toyed with rapefantasies and murder, represented drag queens, androgyny and lesbianism, and highlighted feminist themes and female sexual liberation. The latest Artpop Tour features Gaga in lots of different outfits, including, as usual, many rather revealing ones, and a vomiting simulation at a one-off preview show was criticized by some for “glamorizing” eating disorders. At the same time she calls herself “a real family girl. When it comes to love and loyalty, I am very old-fashioned. And I am quite down-to-earth for such an eccentric person.” No wonder, then, that it’s hard to put the Lady in a box, bondage-related or otherwise.

Walk On the Wild Side Do you wish you could experience Oslo together with someone who knows what they’re talking about? You’re in luck! Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

Maybe you want to see and learn about major city landmarks, or discover Oslo’s urban river. Maybe you want to come face to face with a haunted Oslo full of ghosts and spirits, or discover the city’s feisty booze history. Whatever tickles your fancy, there may well be a guided tour for that! Here we provide a brief introduction to three of Oslo’s great guide bureaus, filled with people who really do know what they’re talking about. First out is Oslo Guidebureau, a wellrespected guide company with lots of experience and lots of guided walks to choose between.

MEET THE CITY

Examples are their city centre walk introducing you to historical buildings and places, a walk focused on the area from

City Hall to the stylish and impressive new seaside neighbourhood of Tjuvholmen, and their hike in part of the great forests around Oslo. You can also tailor your own guided tour, or draw inspiration from the suggested theme tours on their website. Their most popular tour takes you to the Vigeland sculpture park, the Holmenkollen ski arena and the Viking Ship Museum, and concludes with a short tour of the city centre. Another company is called Oslo City and Nature Walks. This is a small company with several popular and out-of-theordinary tours.

BOO OR TWEET!

You can for instance try their Ghost Walk charting the haunted history of the Old City, their Pub Walk that looks at the city’s booze history, and their River

Oslo City and Nature Walks: A smaller company with some original and interesting themes for their tours. Tel: 41 31 87 40. Web: oslowalks.no/en

Oslo City Walks

Walk along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva. Among their other walks are forays into the forest surrounding the city, a tour focusing on bird song with a wildlife expert, as well as tours of city sights. Oslo City Walks is our third guide company, and offer two classic tours. The first is called The Christiania Walk, which is a city centre tour that includes Akershus fortress and the old city centre of Christian IV (from 1624) as well as parade street Karl Johans gate. Their Picturesque Walk takes you to the Vigeland sculpture park and Holmenkollen ski arena. There are even more tour possibilities, including bicycle tours (see our information box). Take a walk on the wild side, and enjoy!

This company specializes in two classic guided tours. Location: Starting point is in front of Oslo Tourist Information by the City Hall, or at the relevant cruise dock. Tel: 22 14 49 74 / 22 28 94 59. Bookings and appointments by email only: s-rygla@online.no. Web: citywalks.no

Viking Biking: This is a bike tour company with a number of interesting trips. Location: Nedre Slottsgate 4. Tel: 41 26 64 96. Web: vikingbikingoslo.com/

The Secret Life of Sculptures Oslo’s sculptures are everywhere. These mysterious figures stand there for decades and centuries staring down at you, or maybe at something i intangible in the distance. Meet a few of them!

Lions Guard at the Parliament

Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen There are a lot of statues in Oslo – really a lot. Oslo municipality has more than 500, and there are many more owned by others. There has even been some debate about whether or not the city should allow all that many more sculptures, given how crowded it’s getting! However, it seems unlikely that new statues will stop appearing any time soon. And that’s just fine by us, for each statue has an interesting story to tell, and is a world unto itself. Here are some to get you started.

The union king

Right in front of the royal castle you’ll find a big and impressive statue of a man on a horse. This is Karl Johan III, who was the king of Norway and Sweden from 1818-1844. The statue was raised in 1875, 57 years to the day after the crowning of Karl Johan. When the statue was raised Norway was still in a rather forced union with Sweden, with Sweden as the dominant power (Norway gained independence

in 1905). The inscription on one side of the plinth means “The people’s love is my reward”, and the inscription on the other side says “The Norwegian people raised this memorial”. Oslo’s main parade street, which runs from the central station to the Royal Palace, is called Karl Johans gate.

Lions guard parliament

In front of the parliament building there are two stone lions standing guard. Lions have been used in Norway’s national coat of arms for centuries, and in 1863 parliament earmarked money for the project. While the drawings and model of the lions was made by a well-known sculptor, the sculpting work itself was carried out by prisoners from Akershus Fortress. The main sculptor among the prisoners was Gudbrand Eriksen Mørstad. He had already had his death penalty for

murder converted to life imprisonment, but the authorities were so happy with his work that they pardoned and freed him in 1872. He immigrated to the U.S. and started a new life on the prairie.

The national diva

Near the National Theatre (Nationaltheatret) a statue of one of Norway’s most famous stage actresses, Wenche Foss, stands. Born in 1917 and starring in major plays as well appearing in big screen movies, TV productions and radio shows over the course of many decades, she died at the age of 93 in 2011, after spending most of her life in the limelight. Her stage work spanned from the humoristic to the very serious. During her life she became one of the few civilian recipients of the royal decoration of Commander of the Order of St. Olav. Her death resulted in national outpourings of grief or regret and the government buried her with official honours at the government’s expense.

The Human Condition

In the middle of Oslo’s famous Frogner Park 212 bronze and granite statues of naked people in various contortions resides in an area covering a massive

320,000 square metres (80 acres). Far from pornographic however, these statues by famous Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) are subject to the overlying theme “Human Condition”. But interestingly the individual statues don’t have titles, and so it is up to all of us to interpret what’s going on in each case. The centre of the statue complex features “The Monolith”. It towers 14.12 meters (46.32 ft) high and is composed of 121 human figures rising towards the sky. This represents man’s desire to become closer with the spiritual and divine.

Fairy-tale bridge

The bridge Ankerbrua is sometimes called Eventyrbrua (the Fairy-tale Bridge) because of its four statues based on four Norwegian fairy-tales. These are Kong Valemon (King Valemon), Peer Gynt, Kari Trestakk as well as Veslefrikk med fela (Veslefrikk with the Fiddle). These tales appear in Norwegian Folktales, also known as Asbjørnsen & Moe, a written collection of folktales and legends by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen (1812-1885) and Jørgen Moe (1813-1882), of which the first were published in 1841. Inspired by the German folktale collectors commonly known as the Brothers Grimm, “Asbjørnsen & Moe” have a similar stature

here in Norway, with their Norwegian Folktales/Asbjørnsen & Moe appearing in countless bookshelves across the country. Unlike the stories published by Brothers Grimm, Asbjørne & Moe’s stories are considered to have been closer to the originals, and were collected in the field (again unlike the Grimm stories). They also helped develop the modern Norwegian language, known as Bokmål.

The Forest Women

In the hillside forest west of the city centre a brand new statue park among the trees and hills saw the light of day in September last year. The Ekebergparken Sculpture

Park is actually also a national heritage park with archeological treasures, but now it features a growing number of sculptures by famous artists as well. Many (but by no means all) of these are of women, including Sean Henry’s (born 1965) Walking Woman-statue pictured in this article. The park was financed and partly conceptualized by property director and art collector Christian Ringnes (born 1954), who wanted to make a homage to female sensuality. There are also other art installations, and as statues will continue to be added until 2050, this place is truly history in the making.

The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945. Several showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions. Shopping malls & department stores

Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. Getting started: Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten.no), which has a further 70 shops and is located in the same building as Oslo S. Eger (Karl Johans

gate 23 B/ egerkarljohan.no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house and offers over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store near Stortinget with many well-known and attractive Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. At Aker Brygge, the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations are ongoing, but many of the shops that are gathered here have already reopened in new premises or are housed in temporary constructions outside, and the historic yet stylish area is well worth a visit. Large shopping malls outside the city centre include the recently opened Storo Storsenter (Vitaminveien 7-9 / thonshopping.no/storo), Sandvika Storsenter (Brodtkorpgate 7 / thonshopping.no/

sandvika) and CC Vest (Lilleakerveien 16 / ccvest.no).

Vintage & secondhand

Most vintage and second-hand stores are found in the Grünerløkka area, although there are some more gems spread around town. Getting started: Fretex (fretex.no), Norway’s biggest chain of second-hand shops with four shops just in Oslo, is run by the Christian charity Salvation Army Norway. It’s a great place to find clothes at very cheap prices. UFF has two stores in Oslo: UFF Underground (Storgata 1/ uffnorge.org/second-hand/uff-underground) where you can choose from thousands of pieces of trendy second-hand clothes from the ‘50s-‘70s, and UFF Family Store (Jernbanetorget 2 / uffnorge.no) with a more conventional second-hand selection. Fuglen (Universitetsgata 2 / fuglen.no) is a great retro-looking coffee shop and cocktail bar, but “everything” here is also for sale, from the retro chairs and tables to the plates. The vintage shop Frøken Dianas Salonger (Markveien 33 / frokendianassalonger.no) sells hand-picked, custom designed and mostly used clothes, and Robot (Korsgata 22A / trabantclothing. com) focuses on imported vintage, retro and mod clothing, to mention just a few of the places in this hip area.

antiquarian book store in Scandinavia, as well as antiques shop Galleri Gimle Arts and Antiques (Gimleveien 21 / galleri-gimle. no). Basarhallene (Lille Grensen 3) houses several handicraft and antique shops.

Books & music

There are plenty of places around town to satisfy your appetite for books and music. To get you started we’ll mention just a few of the more unique ones. Getting started: Bare Jazz (Grensen 8 / barejazz.no) is a great jazz-only specialty music store with a café and a place to hear good jazz music, sometimes live, while nearby Big Dipper (Møllergata 1 / bigdipper.no) has a large selection of vinyl. Eldorado Bookstore (Torggata 9A / eldo. no) is the largest independent bookstore in Scandinavia, with 4,000 square metres of books, culture and music, including Norway’s largest departments for children’s books, audio books and classical music, and a coffee shop, back yard restaurant and four stages. Tronsmo (Kristian Augusts gate 19 / tronsmo.no) is a specialist book shop focusing on subjects like politics, feminism, gay & lesbian issues, movies and ficition, has a good selection of English-language literature, and a

Art & antiques

There are quite a lot of places to check out around town for those who would like to get in touch with their artistic or antiquarian sides. Take a stroll and explore beautiful paintings, art magazines, old books, handicrafts and antique furniture. Getting started: The popular Vestkanttorvet Market (Vestkanttorvet (Professor Dahls gate) / vestkanttorvet. wordpress.com) is Oslo’s oldest market, and the place to go for bric-a-brac and antiques on Sundays. The art shop at the Stenersen Museum (Munkedamsveien 15 / stenersenmuseet.no) has a great selection of art magazines and books, which could come in handy when you visit Blomqvist kunsthandel (Tordenskiolds gate 5 / blomqvist.no), Norway’s largest auction house specializing in local and international art, as well as Norwegian antiques. You might also want to take a look at Damm’s Antiquarian Books (Frederik Stangs gate 46 / damms.no), the oldest

basement full of comic books. The Nobel Peace Center Gift Shop in the Nobel Peace Center (Brynjulf Bulls plass 1 / nobelpeacecenter.org) has books related to war, peace and development. The shop in the Museum of Contemporary Art (Bankplassen 4) is well worth a visit, especially for lovers of photographic art. In the National Gallery’s shop you will find a broad selection of books on art.

Design

Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours. Getting started: Moods of Norway (moodsofnorway.com) in the city centre (Akersgata 18), Homansbyen (Hegdehaugsveien 34) and Stortorvet (Stortorvet 3), is a chain of stores and a hip Norwegian designer brand with funky clothes for every occasion – and the slogan “Happy Clothes for Happy People”. David-Andersen (david-andersen.no) stores have a great selection of gold, diamond, silver and enamel jewelry. Conzept (Steenstrups gate 12 / www.purenkel.no) is a shop and gallery hybrid with Norwegian, Swedish and Danish designer clothing, as well as exhibits

of Norwegian design and art. At Norway Designs (Stortingsgata 28 / norwaydesigns. no) you’ll find great Norwegian, Nordic and European interior design articles, and at Pur Norsk (Industrigata 36 / purnorsk.no) you can buy Norwegian design products such as furniture and personal items. Heimen husflid (Rosenkrantz’ gate 8 / heimen.net) is a traditional handicraft shop with Norwegian sweaters and other knitwear, blankets, arts and crafts and much more, and the shop Illums bolighus (Ruseløkkveien 26 / illumsbolighus.no) is four whole floors of famous and new Danish, Scandinavian and international furniture design.

Food & delicacies

You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate. Getting started: One of the hottest places on the Oslo food map is Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17 / mathallenoslo.no) – Norway’s very first food hall. In this red brick

former factory building at Grünerløkka by the Akerselva river, you’ll find about 30 food shops and eateries offering a tasty and fascinating selection of food and delicacies from various regions of Norway and further afield. The fish shop at Tjuvholmen Sjømagasin (Tjuvholmen allé 14 / sjomagasinet.no) as well as Fiskeriet (Youngstorget 2 / fiskeriet.com) are two great places to pick up freshly caught sea food such as fish and shellfish, fair-trade treats, local produce and special imports, and the latter has a bistro with seasonal produce. And if you have a sweet tooth, Freia Chocolate Shop (Karl Johans gate 31 / freia.no) offers tasty, high quality Norwegian chocolate.

Luxury & high-end

Oslo’s luxury and upmarket shopping opportunities have grown fast in recent years, and can be found in many parts of town, but especially on and near Karl Johans gate as well as on the city’s wealthy west side. Getting started: Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B/ egerkarljohan.no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house, and stocks over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store with many well-known and attractive Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. House of Oslo (Ruseløkkveien 26 / houseofoslo.no) is Norway’s first and only department store that specializes in high-end design, interior and lifestyle, and contains over 20 shops that sell everything from teaspoons to sofas. Upmarket stores with self-explanatory names include Gucci (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Hermés (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Louis Vuitton (Akersgata 20) and Mulberry (Akersgata 18). On and around Bogstadveien on the city’s west side there are also a number of high-end stores, and nearby you’ll for instance find Kamikaze (Hegdehaugsveien 24 / kamikaze.no), with brands such as Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli.

Souvenirs No visit to Oslo is complete without at least one souvenir! While souvenirs of course can be anything that reminds you of this place and your trip, around the city centre there are places that make it easy for you. Getting started: No less than three souvenir shops can be found near Oslo

Pur Norsk. Photo: CH - visitnorway.com City Hall. These are Oslo Tourist Information Souvenir Shop (Fridtjof Nansens Plass 5 / visitoslo.com/en/tourist-informationcentres/) with books, magnets, key chains, t-shirts, mugs, postcards and stamps, Norway Shop (Fridtjof Nansens plass 9 / norwayshop.com), a big store that sells Norwegian knitwear, gifts and souvenirs, and Holm – Souvenirs & Sweaters (Hieronymus Heyerdalsgate 1 / thv-holm.no), which sells a wide variety of headwear for all occasions, as well as sweaters from Dale of Norway, and various souvenirs and gifts. Oslo Sweater Shop in Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel (Holbergs gate 30 / sweater.no) as well as in Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania (Biskop Gunnerus’ gate 3 / sweater.no) has the country’s largest selection of Norwegian sweaters as well as many other souvenirs. And once you’ve been to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, why not drop by the Vigeland Visitors’ Centre (Frognerveien 67) just inside the main gates of the park, where you can pick up even more souvenirs.

City centre & Karl Johans gate

In the city centre you can move and shake to whatever is most popular at the moment. The area also boasts several jazz and blues clubs. GETTING STARTED: At Oslo’s oldest rock bar Last Train (Karl Johans gate 45 / lasttrain.no), Norwegian and international bands perform on a regular basis. 34 Skybar (Sonja Henies plass 3 / radissonblu. com/plazahotel-oslo/dining/skybar-34), a bar on the 34th floor of Radisson Plaza Blu Hotel behind the Oslo City shopping centre, has large windows with an impressive panoramic view of the city and fjord. Jaeger (Grensen 9 / jaegeroslo.no) is a popular club with electronic music and DJs most nights. Hip IZAKAYA (St. Olavs Gate 7 / izakayaoslo.com) is a Japanese bar with authentic Japanese food and drinks, where enthusiastic bartenders wax lyrical about sake and shochu.

Grünerløkka

Just northeast of the city centre is Grünerløkka, with active music venues that make

concerts an important part of the borough’s nightlife. Many of the area’s popular cafés turn into hot spots in the evening, and this is one of the most popular areas for partygoers in general and hipsters in particular. GETTING STARTED: Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40 / fruhagen.no) is a café in the daytime that turns into a hugely popular (and cramped) bar in the evenings. Bar and concert stage Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11 / parkteatret.no) is equally popular, as is Blå (Brenneriveien 9 / blaaoslo.no) – originally mainly a jazz club in an old riverside factory that also hosts lively DJ-nights and concerts of all kinds. BAR Vulkan (Maridalsveien 17 / bygdoyallerestaurant.no/index.php?option=com_co ntent&view=article&id=30&Itemid=182) is a fancy bar known for its tasty cocktails and (in summer) large roof terrace, rockabilly-inspired Ryes (Thorvald Meyers gate 59 / facebook.com/RyesOslo) is a great place for a twirl on the dance floor, Bar Boca (Thorvald Meyers gate 30 / facebook. com/pages/Bar-Boca/284273994971781 ?rf=155475754503779) with its tasteful ‘50s/’60s interior has professional bartenders and great drinks, and Schouskjelleren Mikrobryggeri (Trondheimsveien

2 / schouskjelleren.no) is an atmospheric basement micro-brewery with a large selection of beers. Norway’s first food hall Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17 / mathallenoslo.no) has a number of interesting bars, including Smelteverket with the city’s longest bar disk and mini concerts.

Grønland

Grønland on the east side of town offers a refreshing blend of friendly and laid-back clubs with varied music offerings, as well as slightly ragged bars with some of the cheapest beer in town. GETTING STARTED: Dattera til Hagen (Grønland 10 / dattera.no) is a colourful bar and café with two floors and a big, charming backyard. Ivars kro (Grønland 14 / ivarskro. no) is a pianobar with live music every night and a large bar with a good selection of drinks, while Oslo Mekaniske Verksted (Tøyenbekken 34 / oslomekaniskeverksted. no) is a big and cozy bar/pub with a big fireplace, board games, comfy sofas - and a theatre in the same building. Caféteatret (Hollendergata 8 / cafeteatret.no) is a multicultural bar, concert and theatre stage

that includes popular open stage nights, and Pigalle (Grønlandsleiret 15 / olympen.no) features a mostly original ‘60s interior and music from the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Youngstorget

In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places with a more alternative/rock-oriented music profile, as well as a couple of clubs devoted to electronic music. GETTING STARTED: The newest offering is Kulturhuset (Youngstorget 3 / kulturhusetioslo.no), covering a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar and shuffle board. Café Mono (Pløens gate 4 / cafemono.no) is a dark and relaxed bar/ pub/concert stage that plays a lot of rock, alternative rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2 / internasjonalen.no), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25 / thevilla.no), Fisk & Vilt (Pløens gate 4 / fiskogvilt.no) and Turkish Delight (Torggata 35 / turkish.no) appeal to the electronic music crowd, with local and international DJs and genres such as house, techno and dub step. In the basement of the bar Revolver (Møllergata 32 / revolveroslo.no) young crowds dance the night away to 80s pop, rock and disco.

Aker Brygge & Tjuvholmen © BAR Tjuvholmen

© The Thief

Along the waterfront at Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen you will meet tourists, business people, everyday locals and the wealthy. This is a great place to go for relatively upmarket food, pubbing and clubbing, and a summer drink at one of the slick waterfront bars with beautiful views of the ocean. GETTING STARTED: BAR Tjuvholmen (Bryggegangen 6 / bygdoyallerestaurant.no) is a slick and popular bar and restaurant on the waterfront in Oslo’s newest neighbourhood, and a great place for cocktails. Drink in style in Tjuvholmen’s only hotel bar at designer hotel The Thief (Landgangen 1 / thethief.com). Beer Palace (Holmens gate 3 / beerpalace.no) is located in the oldest building at Aker Brygge, and their motto is that everyone likes beer, but

81

not everyone has found a type they like yet. And why not head over to Jacob Aall Brasserie & Bar Aker Brygge (Stranden 63 / jacobaall.no), where you can sip on some exotic drinks.

Frogner & Majorstua

The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying. Drinks are pricier, the dress code stricter, and the see and be seen factor is higher. Guys in suits and girls in glittering dresses are not an uncommon sight.

(Parkveien 12 / lorry.no) is a two floor classic where young and old rub shoulders in rustic and spacious surroundings, while Oslo Mikrobryggeri (Bogstadveien 6 / omb. no) has its very own brewery, and super tasty – you guessed it – beer.
