History
Founded in 1196, Torre Abbey became the wealthiest English monastery of the order of Premonstratensian canons. The extent of its survival makes Torre Abbey the best-preserved medieval abbey in Devon and Cornwall. After King Henry VIII closed the monastery in 1539, two of its former ranges of buildings were adapted for use as a private house. From 1662, this house became the home of the Cary family, who lived here for nearly 300 years.
Art and Culture
Today the abbey provides an ideal setting for Torbay’s collection of paintings and antiques, most of which have been donated by local people. Several times a year, Torre Abbey welcomes visiting art exhibitions from partners including the V&A, the Tate and the Arts Council Collection.
Family Friendly Activities
We recognise that children are the museum visitors of tomorrow, so we want them to have the best experience possible. Free activity sheets are available from the main desk, while we also organise regular treasure hunts and other workshops and activities to complement our visiting exhibitions.
The Gardens
Our award-winning garden is famed for exuberant plantings of herbaceous perennials, roses and dahlias. Rare shrubs and trees flourish in the English Riviera climate, and our palm and cactus house contain tropical and subtropical plans. Crime fiction fans will also enjoy the Agatha Christie Potent Plants Garden that celebrates Torquay’s most famous former resident.
Open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am until 5pm (last entry 3.45pm) and on Bank Holiday Mondays. Torre Abbey Café open 7 days a week. Visit: www.torre-abbey.org.uk

Patrick’s owners Kirk & Hannah Petrakis have teamed up with Rod Davis, who was in John Lennons band The Quarrymen to work on a new song called Neigh Hurray, which is about Patrick The Pony saving the day. The idea of the song started during visits to schools and Hospitals, as Kirk & Hannah would sing with the children during visits, before reading The Adventures of Patrick The Pony book. Afterwards the children got to meet
Patrick The Pony, which was always really exciting for them. You may think how does Patrick The Pony save the day, well the aim is to make people smile even during the most difficult of times, which in some cases he has saved many peoples day, by bringing some happiness.

Ann Reiter Art
Jeiann Reiter also known as Ann Reiter, is a bright, up and coming self-taught German-Filipino abstract artist. Born in Cagayan De Oro City, Philippines on the 8th of March in the year of 1997, she now resides in Devon, England.
She has amassed an impressive international following of admirers on social media where she finds inspiration and support. Her medium however, is far removed from the digital world of manipulated images. She paints bold, active brush strokes, strategic uses of palette knives, sponges, and all kinds of art materials on small to large canvases. Her art is dynamic and raw.
After discovering how the mere change of a few brush strokes could dramatically alter the emotions conveyed by watercolour and oil art mediums, she found her freedom in acrylic and abstraction. She has evolved to create a less representational visual language. Anonymous, sometimes obscured, express her personal reality filtered through feeling.
In her recent paintings she has made a more or less complete retreat from representation. Reflecting her energy and state of mind when painting, colour will take precedence over shape, departing from the distraction of realism.

As you walk through the extensive labyrinth of caverns, you’ll be surrounded by 400 million year old rocks and spectacular stalagmites and stalactites.
Our entertaining cave guides tell the story of a 15 year long Victorian Excavation which uncovered some of Britain’s most ancient secrets.

SIMPLE MINDS
NEW ALBUM ‘DIRECTION OF THE HEART’ IS OUT NOW
(FEATURING A GUEST APPEARANCE FROM RUSSELL MAEL OF SPARKS)
Simple Minds’ acclaimed new album, Direction Of The Heart has recently been released.
Direction Of The Heart is the band’s eighteenth studio album and Simple Minds’ first album of new material since 2018’s outstanding UK Top 5 album Walk Between Worlds. Throughout its nine tracks Direction of The Heart finds the band at their most confident, anthemic best on an inspired celebration of life.
The story of Direction Of The Heart spans several years, and various locations, in Germany, Italy, and the UK.
Album opener ‘Vision Thing’ was created by Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill at the former’s father’s house, when Kerr senior was terminally ill. Looking through early band cuttings his parents had kept, it became about Jim looking at his father as a version of him and looking
at his younger self. The song’s urgent electronic pulse transports an intricately decorated, deeply poignant melody. The song is a celebration, but with sad tones in the words. For Kerr, that’s a sweet place.
‘Vision Thing’ sets the pace for a concise nine-track album. One which manages to perfectly encapsulate the essence of past and present Simple Minds, a band whose reascent over the past 10 years has seen them, once again, capture the magic and critical praise of their early days.
Direction Of The Heart’s predominant mood is simultaneously reflective and euphoric, framing the personal in a universal context: qualities intrinsic to all the great Simple Minds records of the past, now recalibrating
the band for its next era. Our hyper-stressed Zeitgeist bleeds into chattering rhythms and skyburst melody clusters on ‘Planet Zero’ – “I saw a whole world on fire” – and the electro-rock fusion of ‘Who Killed Truth’. With Celtic textures underpinning its widescreen melodrama and Sarah Brown’s infernal vocals, ‘Solstice Kiss’ is a Bond theme in-waiting. Meanwhile, the parabolic drive of ‘First You Jump’ – a Kerr-Burchill co-write with the band’s

long-time bassist Ged Grimes - frames a classic transcendent Simple Minds anthem, one about the anxiety of the times and how we will rise above them.
No song better epitomises the record’s gallows jauntiness than ‘Human Traffic’, a spangly handjive bop through the days of the week, inspired by JG Ballard and with a vocal cameo from Russell Mael of Sparks. There’s a real pop element to it, something the band are not scared to embrace as they get older.
The other notable collaboration is a kind of ongoing *in memoriam*: album closer ‘The Walls Came Down’, written in 1983 by kindred spirit, the late Michael Been, whose band The Call supported Simple Minds in the US, and whose ‘Let The Day Begin’ was covered on 2014’s Big Music. With an apocalyptic techno-rock arrangement and prescient lyrics, it’s a perfect fit. Originally the song was an attack against Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, but fast forward decades are in a world of Donald Trump starting to build walls, Orbán in Hungary building walls, and Nigel Farage wanting to build some kind of walls, sadly the song seems to have found its time.
The energy levels on Direction Of The Heart send most songs into the 120-130 BPM range. Burchill thinks it’s partly the unusual circumstances of the album’s creation. Kerr, meanwhile, points to a “growing confidence” in the band’s capabilities, instilled by Big Music and 2018’s Walk Between Worlds renewing Simple Minds as a dynamic contemporary force, thanks partly to engaging with the sounds and spirits that compelled them in earlier, hungrier times.
That process finds its ultimate expression on Direction Of The Heart’s pivotal ‘Act Of Love’, a song written by Kerr and Burchill in Glasgow during late 1977 and performed as the opening song of their first ever gig, which now exemplifies their current vitality.
Forty five years on, Simple Minds remain an act of love, with all the thrills and jeopardy that entails.
Forty five years on, Simple Minds remain an act of love, with all the thrills and jeopardy that entails. Direction Of The Heart is a dizzying, uplifting spectacle, built from innocence and experience to stare down the darkness without fear. And the album title? “‘Direction of the heart’ was a line we’ve had for a long time,” says Jim Kerr. “Follow your own path and get through it – that, in a nutshell, sums up all we’ve ever done.”
Direction Of The Heart is available on CD, Deluxe CD with two extra tracks and a hardback book, vinyl including coloured vinyl, and cassette.
Simple Minds are: Jim Kerr (vocals), Charlie Burchill (guitars, keyboards), Gordy Goudie
(acoustic guitar), Ged Grimes (bass), Cherisse Osei (drums), Berenice Scott (keyboards) and Sarah Brown (vocals).

Each of the one-day festivals, which happen all over the UK from May until September, features two headline acts plus a host of stars from the era when pop ruled the world.
After two very challenging, pandemic-hit summers, 2022 saw the return of a full schedule of Let’s Rock
It was truly humbling to have everyone back at Let’s Rock this summer after two difficult years, and it means the world to us that our loyal audience has stuck with us.
“Let’s put on a bit of blusher and pretend like the Eighties never ended” (The
festivals for the first time since 2019, drawing a combined audience of over 150,000 across the thirteen festival sites. In an exciting development, 2023 will see Let’s Rock partner with the national digital radio station Absolute 80s.
Comment Let’s Rock organisers and founders Nick Billinghurst & Matt Smith: “It was truly humbling to have everyone back at Let’s Rock this summer after two difficult years, and it means the world to us that our loyal audience has stuck with us. We’re already looking forward to 2023 and are proud to announce what we hope you’ll agree is a spectacular line-up for Let’s Rock Southampton. See you next summer!”
Let’s Rock works with many amazing charities including official charity partner Child Bereavement UK, who support families and educate professionals when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a family is facing bereavement. Since partnering with UK Live in 2014, Child Bereavement have managed to raise over £800,000 at the Lets Rock Festivals, an amazing accomplishment.
Child Bereavement UK Community Projects Manager Lorna Murchi comments: “I’m absolutely delighted and incredibly grateful to everyone who attended the Let’s Rock festivals and gave so generously in aid of Child Bereavement UK this year. Every bit of change popped in a collection tin, wristband or raffle ticket purchased and auction bid paid, adds up and makes a huge difference to the bereaved children, parents and families we support across the UK. To give some perspective, £130,000 could fund our national helpline for over four months, giving a lifeline to families when they need it most. Thank you for your wonderful support this year!”
Let’s Rock is a family-friendly festival; children can enjoy complimentary activities within the ‘Kids’ Kingdom’ area with an interactive circus, face painting, inflatables and more. For adults, there are multiple bars and a ‘Club Tropicana’ VIP area, plus of course the all-important posh loos.

Tavistock Inn
One of England’s oldest pubs, Tavistock Inn dates back to about 1413 when Newbridge was built. The bridge was “new” when it was built- hence it’s name - and so was the pub, a welcome stop for weary travellers who had just climbed Newbridge hill. And little has changed, for good beer, wines, spirits and soft drinks, including a fine selection of real ales are still dispensed to visitors from near and far, together with some of the best pub food you’ll find in Devon with local produce being used when available.
Poundsgate, Dartmoor, TQ13 7NY. Tel: 01364 631251.
Elephants Nest Inn
The Elephant’s Nest Inn is a quintessentially English – and Devonshire – country pub set in a peaceful location within the Dartmoor National Park. It is a place to meet, whether for a drink or to eat, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. There are open log fires, thick stone walls and slate floors inside, and outside there is a large and recently extended garden which provides marvellous views of the moor. Tavistock PL19 9NQ. Tel: 01822 810273.
The Prince of Wales
After a full day of activities on Dartmoor replace your energy in our pub The Prince of Wales. Situated just in front of the bunkhouse we serve good, honest, value for money pub grub. Find all the traditional, well loved, pub dishes and refuel your tank for the next day’s adventures. After a good night’s sleep a full English breakfast is served in the pub for only £6.50 per person.

The Globe Inn
The Globe’s life as a coach house started way back in the 1600s, and since then its role in the community hasn’t much changed. Of course, the building is now much warmer and the plumbing much more reliable, but some things just don’t change. Comforting home-cooked food comes out of the kitchen, and the two well-stocked bars all serve the finest local tipples.
9 High St, Chagford, Newton Abbot, Devon. Tel: 01647 433485.
Plume of Feathers
The Plume is Princetown’s oldest building, and it feels like it. But that’s not to say that that’s a bad thing. This traditional historic pub is perfectly placed for walkers, hikers and tourists in the area and is decked out in proper granite walls and wooden beams. The beer on tap is local and delicious, and the staff are very friendly.
The Square, Princetown Tel: 01822 890240.
Cromwell Arms
This award-winning pub which sits at the gateway to the Moors in Bovey Tracey is a comfortable and friendly spot for beer drinking. Rooms are available, and the food here is great, but, as a village pub, the atmosphere is second to none. Log burners keep the place toasty in the colder months, and the sunny lawn is popular in summer.
Fore St, Bovey Tracey, Devon Tel: 01626 833473.
The Post Inn
The Post is another one of those traditional Dartmoor pubs from the 16th century. It’s a formula that works well in these parts, and this pub is a warm welcome from the often hostile Dartmoor elements. There are tons of local ciders, beers and ales on tap, as well as a big menu which is sure to not leave a single soul hungry.

Bearslake Inn
The Bearslake is what we call a real pub, and by that we mean that locals don’t even have to ask the bar staff for their next drink. The restaurant here is of exceptionally high quality, and a good selection of beers are available. Bearslake is believed to have once been a working farm that dates all the way back to the 13th century, so there’s a hell of a lot of history in these walls!
Lake Sourton, Okehampton Tel: 01837 861334.
The New Inn
The New Inn is just about everything you could wish for from a country pub. Full of character, great beers, better food and a welcome atmosphere. The kitchen is run by Master Chef’s Malcolm Whybrow, his wife Karen and Michelin-trained Matthew Buscombe. As such, all aspects of this menu are beyond excellent, especially the puddings.
Green Hill, Sampford Courtenay, Okehampton, Devon. Tel: 01837 82247.
The Rugglestone
The Rugglestone is a traditional Dartmoor pub, complete with wooden beams, an oversized hearth with a roaring fire which burns year-round and a long history of coachmen and their antics. The food here is hearty and delicious – just what the doctor ordered after a long day in the great outdoors – and the beer garden is a pretty wisteria-clad backdrop, perfect for afternoon beers.

Dartmoor Halfway Inn
The Dartmoor Halfway Inn food is locally sourced where possible and is freshly cooked to order. The specials board changes daily and the menus with the seasons.
