LET’S ROCK EXETER

MAY 29TH 2019, POWDERHAM CASTLE, EXETER

LET’S ROCK: THE UK’S LEADING RETRO FESTIVAL HEADLINERS FOR EXETER INCLUDE BILLY OCEAN, THE HUMAN LEAGUE, BELINDA CARLISLE, GO WEST, NIK KERSHAW, HOT CHOCOLATE, THOMAS DOLBY, THE REAL THING, SNAP, BETTY BOO, JOHNNY HATES JAZZ AND CHINA CRISIS A joyous annual celebration of all things pop and 80s, Let’s Rock is the UK’s leading retro Festival series. In a festival scene dominated by the same names and themes, Let’s Rock offers something different: gloriously unpretentious non-stop fun where iconic names from pop play hit after hit to a crowd of all ages. The fun starts at Let’s Rock The Moor in Berkshire on May 18 and runs through to Let’s Rock Essex on Sept 7, taking in twelve locations all over the UK, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A combined audience of over 150,000 people will be entertained by many of the biggest stars of the era, including Billy Ocean, The Human League, Status Quo and Erasure’s Andy Bell, with different line-ups at all the festivals. Let’s Rock is a family-friendly festival; children can enjoy complimentary activities within the ‘Kids’ Kingdom’. For adults, there are multiple bars and a ‘Club Tropicana’ VIP area, plus of course the all-important posh loos.

WHAT THE LET’S ROCK AUDIENCE SAY… “I love the line-ups, so many artists I’d not normally be able to see all on the same bill. The atmosphere is always amazing, and I’ve made so many friendships through Let’s Rock.” Karla “Let’s Rock seem to constantly evolve and introduce new elements to keep the festival fresh, something I’ve not really seen at other festivals: not in a positive way anyhow.” Lorraine “I just love the whole thing! I usually go with my partner but last year I went with my daughter and we just laughed all day!” Glenys “It’s the first time we’ve been here and it’s fantastic actually. I like the fact that you can go in and out. If there’s a break, you can go and have a bite to eat or a drink and come back in whenever you want. You’re not penned in for 12 hours.” Kate “I think it gets better every year. This time there were hardly any queues, even though it was sold out. They’ve worked out the winning formula.” Karen

CHAGSTOCK FESTIVAL 2019 “The Best Little Festival in The South West”

Fun Lovin’ Criminals have been invited back to headline the main stage on the Saturday night. They are, still, the world’s finest & only purveyors of cinematic hip hop, rock ‘n’ roll, blues-jazz, latino soul vibes. The planet’s “best-loved cousins from New York”, who, through the mid-late 90s, chronicled life in their native city while bending the global ear to the sonic possibilities of exuberant hip-hop gangster-rock merged with lounge music, funk, mariachi trumpets & ‘Bass-o-matic’ Barry White. While possibly smoking a cheroot, in a sweat-dripped Puerto Rican nightclub, somewhere on the Lower East Side. Like The Killers & Kings of Leon today, the UK loved them first, the most; whip-smart story-tellers in smarter Saville Row suits, who told vibrant, satirical, comically tall tales of living large in the neon metropolis via music, drugs, crime & existential ennui. With a penchant for a beautiful “lady”. Friday night’s main stage headline act will be, From The Jam! The Jam had amazing chart success with 18 singles & 7 albums to make the top 40 in the United Kingdom from their debut in 1977 to their break up in 1982. Fronted by the Jam’s legendary Bassist Bruce Foxton, From The Jam will bring their unique punk / mod sound to the main

stage on Friday, performing hits such as ‘That’s Entertainment’, ‘Going Underground’ & ‘Town Called Malice’ Supporting acts include Mad Dog Mcrea & Noble Jacks (both extremely popular choices in our recent survey!). This year we have made a special effort to address gender imbalance in music. With so much talent out there, addressing male orientated festival billings is in everyone’s interest. 13 out of 22 of our Main Stage and Marquee Stage acts feature female inclusive artists. In addition to this, we have even more female musicians on our live lounge line up. Taking place on Friday 19th & Saturday 20th July 2019, Chagstock will once again showcase the very finest music, food & entertainment from the Westcountry & beyond. Chagstock is one of the best value festivals to be found anywhere in the country. Chagstock is able to offer Glamping again for 2019 through Tee & Toast Glamping & their Bell Tents. Please keep an eye on our website www.chagstock.info or social media @Chagstock or #chagstockfestival, for the most up to date news & announcements”

Celebrating 12 years... Watchet Live Music Festival is held over the August Bank holiday weekend Friday Sunday. It is West Somerset’s largest independent outdoor music event. The festival is organised and delivered by Watchet LIVE CIC. Now in its twelve year on the present site at Parsonage Farm it evolved from Watchet Carnival weekend which the organising group took on in 1997. Watchet Live Music Festival has grown at a steady pace becoming one of the main events in the town’s calendar. The 5000 capacity event is family friendly and the site has amazing views of the West Somerset coast and beyond. There’s also on-site camping, 3 stages, Silent Disco, Open Mic Tent, Something Else Tea Tent, Food Court, workshops, real ale and cider bar, Kids Corner, car parking and over 60 live acts... The festival bar is run by the festival with all real ales and ciders around £3.00-£3.50 per pint plus a range of chilled canned popular lagers and beers at sensible, lower than normal, event prices. The aim of Watchet LIVE CIC is to bring the festival experience into West Somerset with a line up of artists and street performers not normally found playing in the area. Watchet Festival supports numerous local charities: Elliott’s Touch, Stand Against Speed for Bethany and 1st Watchet Sea Scout Group to name a few - plus other local groups when in need. These include financing the local primary school to go on their year end day trip for all the children and teachers. Day and weekend tickets are available in Adult, Youth and Family options! This festival has sold out months ahead of the event date for the last five years.

BABBACOMBE CLIFF RAILWAY CLIFF RAILWAY DAY: 11 MAY 2019 Ten years ago, in 2009, the community took over ownership of Babbacombe Cliff Railway. Over that time Babbacombe Cliff Railway has been lucky enough to have an amazing team of passionate, dedicated people who have all been committed to their role as custodians of this fabulous, historic piece of engineering and who have also been determined to ensure that the railway thrives and that its future is safe. Traveller numbers were around 90,000 in 2009. They were over 130,000 in 2018. Babbacombe Cliff Railway runs more than ever before. Open seven days a week virtually all year round, stopping only for a few weeks of maintenance at the beginning of each year. In the ten years of community ownership, there have been many changes, huge investment and a host of great events. The railway now boasts a Visitor Centre down on Oddicombe Beach which is free to look around. This fantastic facility has story boards charting the history of the railway, interesting exhibits and a film to watch. Manned entirely by volunteers the centre is open from Easter right through until winter. In 2017 brand new carriages were installed at a cost of over £100,000. This kind of investment is vital if the railway is to continue to thrive for future generations.

The team at Babbacombe Cliff Railway has created a host of new events over the past decade with celebrations, live music, murder mysteries and all sorts of other fantastic, family goings-on for everyone to enjoy, most of them completely free to take part in. Particularly popular events planned for 2019 include The John Ayres Ukulele Proms on Saturday 8 June. This event was originally known as Babbacombe Ukulele Festival but was re-named in 2018 after its founder and then Chairman of Babbacombe Cliff Railway CIC, John Ayres, sadly passed away. John was a huge influence on the railway and largely responsible for so much of the work and investment that has been undertaken over the past ten years. Other events are the increasingly popular Last Team Standing on Saturday 14 September and, this year, Cliff Railway Day, on the 11th May, is being marked by offering free travel for everyone all day. That’s something to celebrate!

That community takeover was in the form of a Community Interest Company which has a Board of voluntary Directors who oversee the running of the railway and ensure that it is managed in such a way as to safeguard the future. There is a team of paid staff who run the railway on a day-to-day basis and a great bunch of volunteers.

Home to England’s highest waterfall, descending a staggering 220ft, Canonteign Falls is a breathtaking Devon attraction, and a wonderful day out for all the family. Canonteign Falls is a hidden gem and one of the most idyllic places to see and explore with children. Perfect for outdoor adventure, our children’s play area and children’s assault course will keep the little ones happy, and our lakeside café, snack bar and gift shop will ensure that your every need is catered for.

Directions In the Teign Valley off of the A3193, follow the brown tourist board signs. Canonteign Falls, Christow, Exeter, Devon EX6 7RH

t. 01647 252434 e. info@canonteignfalls.com

Situated within Dartmoor National Park in the heart of Devon’s Teign Valley, the waterfalls tumble down ancient rock formations to meet the lakes below, offering some of the most spectacular waterfall and ancient bluebell woodland scenery in Devon. A breathtaking sight, described by one visitor as “one of the most magical places on earth ”, wildlife thrives in the peace and tranquillity that makes the Falls a haven for both adults and children. Well-marked pathways take you on three scenic walks, suitable for varying ages and abilities. Our Victorian fern garden at the top of the Falls is a magical hidden treasure of Victorian landscaping. We have seven interconnecting lakes. The main Lily Lake has a central island with beautiful purple flowering rhododendrons and provides safe cover for the many Mallard ducks and Canada geese. Clearing of trees has been undertaken at the Falls end of the lake and visitors can now enjoy much enhanced views whilst walking around it. The six lower lakes are linked up with grassy walks and bridges. Planting combinations of fox dogwood, acers, gunnera and pampas grass provide year round texture and colour. Taking the path leading to the wetlands and lower lakes is one of the most fascinating nature walks in Devon, giving you the opportunity to spot kingfishers, bats, butterflies, wildfowl, and dragonflies. The Canonteign bees have an idyllic corner in the old orchard where they busy away making delicious honey. Honey harvesting is done on site and our fresh honey is on the shop shelves usually within 48 hours of collection from the hives. The Pirate Ship climbing structure within the large play area offers rock hold walls, a fireman`s pole and pull up ramps or children can go below deck and create a den. So gather up your treasure chests “me hearties” and let’s set sail! You can even add to the fun with pirate hats and other related items available from our shop. Café Our café offers locally sourced, freshly made selection of delicious salads, open sandwiches, homemade soups and much more. We have a daily specials board with a large variety of additional fayre that always includes a vegan, vegetarian and gluten free option. And why not enjoy a delicious latte or cappuccino made with freshly ground Italian coffee and a slice of one of our delicious homemade cakes or perhaps a traditional Devon Cream Tea after your walk? The Gift Shop at Canonteign is situated in the original farm buildings of Canonteign Estate in what was most likely the milking parlour. This season we have a whole new range of stock showcasing unusual and imaginative gifts for all the family, many of which are made locally. These include some stunning new pottery, turned wooden gifts, ornaments, jewellery, pretty scarves and colourful bags, wooden and educational toys, gardening gifts, soaps, ornaments and our new men’s range! Our branded merchandise includes Canonteign Falls tea towels, bags, mugs and prints. We also sell Becky Bettesworth prints, and a range of chocolates, fudges, jams and chutneys from all over the West Country: delicious!

Bijou Theatre Productions presents Agatha Christies Black Coffee Bijou Theatre Productions are delighted to be able to present Black Coffee for their 2019 Summer Season at the Palace Theatre Paignton. Lucia and Richard Amory Dr Carelli and Barbara are having coffee after dinner. Sir Claude Amory, a famous scientist, announces that a new secret explosive formula has been stolen from his safe and that he has sent for Hercule Poirot. To enable

the thief to return the formula he has ordered all the lights to be switched off. If the formula is returned no further action will be taken. The lights are switched on as Poiot arrives - he finds Sir Claude dead and no sign of the formula. What follows is classic Christie with twists and turns of plot, another attempted murder and Poirot’s little grey cells stretched to their limit. A great night out for all thriller lovers!

EVERY Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in JUNE AND JULY - 7.30pm until 10pm. Tickets £13 with concessions available. Telephone: 01803 665800 Visit: www.palacetheatrepaignton.co.uk/shows/agatha-christies-black-coffee

Agatha Christies Riviera Each September, the English Riviera transforms itself into the murder mystery capital of the country, with ladies and gents in their period finery immersing themselves in tea parties, theatre, dinners on steam trains and vintage bus tours. Why? For the annual award winning Agatha Christie Festival in honour of the Queen of Crime, who was born in Torquay on 15th September 1890. Since the early 20th century, Agatha Christie has been thrilling readers and TV audiences with her gripping stories of crime and mystery. The statistics behind her life are impressive enough. In her 85 years she wrote more than 80 books, many of them bestsellers. Altogether selling an estimated two billion copies worldwide and making her the best-selling fiction author of all time. Her global appeal is testified to by the fact that her stories have been translated into more than 45 languages. From the intricately plotted storylines and wonderfully created

settings of a bygone England, to her two colourful detective characters – Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot - Christie’s work has captured the imaginations of subsequent generations, and continues to be frequently adapted for TV and film. But the true story of Agatha Christie’s life is every bit as intriguing and fascinating as her books, and nowhere can you get closer to her legacy than on the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay. Christie was born in the Riviera town of Torquay, and spent many of the most important chapters of her life here, as well as using real places in the area as settings for her murder mysteries. From the Agatha Christie Mile to the Agatha Christie Festival and visits to her beloved estate at Greenway, the English Riviera is the place to discover the real Christie.

Regional Safe Beach Guide 2019 Here is a guide to some of the nicest beaches in and around the English Riviera. At What’s On not only is your enjoyment our goal but also to be safe with everything we have to offer - Remember to always keep your children in sight and make sure they wear a life jacket - please see some more safety tips below. ANSTEY’S COVE Anstey’s Cove sits between Torquay and Babbacombe. This quiet, peaceful and incredibly beautiful, small shingle beach nestles between high cliffs and a thickly wooded hillside. This is great place to come if you want to escape the crowds.

BABBACOMBE BEACH Babbacombe is a delightful small shingle beach set beneath the cliffs at Babbacombe Downs. An interesting place to explore with rock pools, cliffs and walks.

BANTHAM BEACH Looking out onto the shallow Bigbury Bay and the iconic Burgh Island, this popular family and surfing beach is deep in the South Hams with easy access to a number of walks towards Thurlestone or South Milton Sands. When the tide is out the beach is enormous and the pooch will be more than happy to roam around the area for hours while you soak up the seemingly never-ending panoramic views. BEER BEACH At the end of the picturesque fishing village of the same name is this pebbled beach surrounded by beautiful boats and limestone cliffs. As the cliffs give you natural protection from the wind, you can be sure of a microclimate warmer than many of the other exposed beaches in the county. BLACKPOOL SANDS Although the name may be slightly misleading – the beach is actually made up of shingle – the claim that it’s ‘South Devon’s most picturesque beach’ certainly holds water. Located just 15 minutes outside of Dartmouth, surrounding woodland runs right down to the edge of the beach, creating a combination of countryside and coast that few other beaches in the county can boast. There

are sand pits, a bathing raft and water sports equipment to hire so you can fully enjoy your day on the beautifully clear seas.

BREAKWATER BEACH Breakwater is a small shingle beach next to the picturesque Brixham Harbour and the long breakwater. With its calm warm waters it is a favourite for scuba diving. There are fish, seahorses, seagrass and interesting underwater landscapes to be seen. BROADSANDS BEACH Broadsands is a beautiful long sandy beach in an idyllic rural setting. It’s gently sloping gradient makes it a popular choice for families with children or those wishing to distance themselves from amusement arcades. At low tide interesting rock pools are exposed at the southern end of the beach and there is a large area of parkland directly behind the beach, the perfect spot for a game of football or cricket. CHURSTON COVE The secluded little cove of Churston is an idyllic spot surrounded by cliffs and wooded hillsides. The beach is peaceful and incredibly beautiful and consists of shingle and sand. There is a steep path leading down to the beach which passes through mature woodland and opens out to reveal a small cove with spectacular scenery.

DAWLISH WARREN Dawlish Warren Beach is one of South Devon’s top family beaches. A long sandy beach, distinctive sand dunes, an internationally recognised nature reserve and clean safe bathing waters.

which is an area of established park land.

WOOLACOMBE BEACH An epic 3-mile swathe of glistening sand that runs into the equally as famous Putsborough Beach, Woolacombe is a longtime favourite with families and young people. Lined with colourfully painted beach huts, surf hire huts, a bouncy castle, and a huge boat-swing, Woolacombe has something to keep everyone happy.

The Rugglestone The Rugglestone is a traditional Dartmoor pub, complete with wooden beams, an oversized hearth with a roaring fire which burns year-round and a long history of coachmen and their antics. The food here is hearty and delicious – just what the doctor ordered after a long day in the great outdoors – and the beer garden is a pretty wisteria-clad backdrop, perfect for afternoon beers. Widecombe in the Moor, Newton Abbot, Devon. Tel: 01364 621327.

Cromwell Arms This award-winning pub which sits at the gateway to the Moors in Bovey Tracey is a comfortable and friendly spot for beer drinking. Rooms are available, and the food here is great, but, as a village pub, the atmosphere is second to none. Log burners keep the place toasty in the colder months, and the sunny lawn is popular in summer. Fore St, Bovey Tracey, Devon Tel: 01626 833473.

Plume of Feathers The Plume is Princetown’s oldest building, and it feels like it. But that’s not to say that that’s a bad thing. This traditional historic pub is perfectly placed for walkers, hikers and tourists in the area and is decked out in proper granite walls and wooden beams. The beer on tap is local and delicious, and the staff are very friendly. The Square, Princetown Tel: 01822 890240.

The Post Inn The Post is another one of those traditional Dartmoor pubs from the 16th century. It’s a formula that works well in these parts, and this pub is a warm welcome from the often hostile Dartmoor elements. There are tons of local ciders, beers and ales on tap, as well as a big menu which is sure to not leave a single soul hungry. Exeter Rd, Whiddon Down, Okehampton, Devon. Tel: 01647 231242.

Country Pub Guide

Bearslake Inn The Bearslake is what we call a real pub, and by that we mean that locals don’t even have to ask the bar staff for their next drink. The restaurant here is of exceptionally high quality, and a good selection of beers are available. Bearslake is believed to have once been a working farm that dates all the way back to the 13th century, so there’s a hell of a lot of history in these walls! Lake Sourton, Okehampton Tel: 01837 861334.

The Globe Inn The Globe’s life as a coach house started way back in the 1600s, and since then its role in the community hasn’t much changed. Of course, the building is now much warmer and the plumbing much more reliable, but some things just don’t change. Comforting home-cooked food comes out of the kitchen, and the two well-stocked bars all serve the finest local tipples. 9 High St, Chagford, Newton Abbot, Devon. Tel: 01647 433485.

The New Inn The New Inn is just about everything you could wish for from a country pub. Full of character, great beers, better food and a welcome atmosphere. The kitchen is run by Master Chef’s Malcolm Whybrow, his wife Karen and Michelin-trained Matthew Buscombe. As such, all aspects of this menu are beyond excellent, especially the puddings. Green Hill, Sampford Courtenay, Okehampton, Devon. Tel: 01837 82247.

Dartmoor Halfway Inn The Dartmoor Halfway Inn food is locally sourced where possible and is freshly cooked to order. The specials board changes daily and the menus with the seasons. Real ales and fine wines complement the menu, not to mention a good selection of spirits with over six different gins, a great selection of malts & vodkas to try. Bickington, Newton Abbot, TQ12 6JW Tel: 01626 824011.

Tavistock Inn One of England’s oldest pubs, Tavistock Inn dates back to about 1413 when Newbridge was built. The bridge was “new” when it was built- hence it’s name - and so was the pub, a welcome stop for weary travellers who had just climbed Newbridge hill. And little has changed, for good beer, wines, spirits and soft drinks, including a fine selection of real ales are still dispensed to visitors from near and far, together with some of the best pub food you’ll find in Devon with local produce being used when available. Poundsgate, Dartmoor, TQ13 7NY. Tel: 01364 631251.

The Forest Inn The Forest Inn specialise in home made food using seasonal, locally sourced produce wherever possible. There is an emphasis on local beers and ciders, you have the opportunity to quench your thirst after the efforts of the day with a drink at the bar or relaxing on the Chesterfield in the lounge area, complete with log fire for winter evenings. Hexworthy, Dartmeet, PL20 6SD Tel: 01364 631211.

Peter Tavy Inn The Peter Tavy Inn is a charming 15th century pub in the pretty village of Peter Tavy on the western flanks of Dartmoor. Renowned for good food and wellkept real ales. At 368 square miles (954 square kilometres), Dartmoor is the largest open space in southern England. It has wild open moorland, granite tors and wooded river valleys. At its edge is a landscape of small fields enclosed by stone walls and hedge banks. The open spaces and sheltered valleys give pleasure to millions of people every year. Dartmoor’s blanket bog, upland oakwood, caves and mines are among habitats of international importance. Dartmoor’s landscape is also among the richest in western Europe in terms of its archaeological remains. Dartmoor contains the longest stone row in the world (measuring 3.4km). In fact 60% of all stone rows to be found in England are on Dartmoor and the remains of over 5000 prehistoric hut circles (houses) can be seen. Dartmoor has the greatest number of archaeological sites out of all the UK National Parks. The National Park Visitor Centre at
