I know what the government did in the past; they said where we had to live. I know that we’re not treated equally now, because I can feel it. We’re all Canadians and we should all be treated equally.”

An ongoing process of establishing and maintaining respectful relationships. A critical part of this process involves repairing damaged trust by making apologies, providing individual and collective reparations, and following through with concrete actions that demonstrate real societal change.

Cassie, a Mi’kmaq youth from a community in Nova Scotia

On September 30th, take the time to appreciate that Canada is a great country from coast to coast to coast, and that there were great peoples living here for hundreds of years BEFORE European settlers stepped foot on this continent. It is the duty of every Canadian TODAY to learn about the history of the Canadians who were here before that time. If we don’t, we lose a valuable part of who we all really are.

Council Meeting

What does Reconciliation mean?

In its’ simplest form, reconciliation is about Indigenous and non Indigenous peoples coming to terms with the events of the past in a manner that rebuilds trust and respectful relationships. This will enable people to work out historical differences and build healthy relationships with a focus on bettering future generations in Canada

for an election, even a bi election, is usually $3,000 or more, so having 3 elections in 12 years, as opposed to 4 elections in 12 years, saves in budget and staff time. However, that amount is just for the actual election and does not include the additional amount of time and money spent with new Council orientation and training, which can take place over several months as a new Council comes up to speed after an election. Would the length of term influence your decision to run for Town Council? The Yukon Government is looking for input before considering changes to the Yukon Municipal Act. Surveys are available online from September 1 to September 28, 2022 at www.yukon.ca/engagements while paper copies can be found at the Town Office.

On September 8, 2022 we held out Grand Opening of our new Community Services Building. It was a huge success, and I would like to commend all those who pitched in to make the opening ceremony happen. For those that were unable to attend, but would still wish to see it, I suggest you contact Mark Vainio, Operations Manager, to make arrangements for a suitable time to tour the building. MLA, Stacey Hassard sure can cook a mean burger, thank you

each department needed. After the speeches, a bronze plaque was unveiled identifying the contributions of all involved including the two recent councils and their CAO’s. This is a building we all can be proud of. I believe it also signals that Faro is on the rebound, that we are a growing community, and can anticipate more new construction to follow. We’re looking forward to the move in date.

Following the ceremony, a tour of the Community’s Infrastructure was arranged with Minister Mostyn, Deputy Minister Matt King, Director of Infrastructure Shelby Workman, Project Manager Ryan Brown, WSP Engineer Germaine Cave, Councillors Taylor Fetterly and Sarah McHugh and our CAO Larry Baran. We toured the lower bench around Dawson Drive, Harper Street, Hoole Street, and Mayo Avenues to see where the next phase of sewer main replacement would be. We noted that the existing asphalt there was paid for by the taxpayers of the Town and the future street surface must be asphalt again once the ‘ingroundwork’ is completed.

Thank you to Ted Baker with the Faro EMS giving Ambulance tours to the DVG Students

Lenka Kazda, GMF, giving the DVG High School Students a Tour.

Following the tour, we had an opportunity to discuss a host of topics as a group that I can’t help but feel will reap future benefits. I believe that our visitors left with a renewed sense of the community of Faro and that our little community made an impression on them, with all that they saw and heard.

We then drove through the unfinished section on upper Douglass Drive so the Minister and others could see firsthand the problems with the uncompleted works. Everyone strongly expressed their dissatisfaction with the slow progress and the quality of the work. A strong complaint was noted in the lack of notice given for different aspects of the work which was, and is, a big inconvenience to the residences affected. The Minister and his staff promised that corrective action would be taken.

MLA, Stacy Hazzard; Councillor Taylor Fetterly, Mayor Jack Bowers, Former Councillor Tina Freake

Thank you Sparky for coming out and welcoming the Del Van Gorder Students.

Thank you to Frank Stubbs with the Faro Volunteer Fire Department for giving Fire Truck Tours to the DVG Students

The CRIC's last day will be on September 16th. On behalf of the Town of Faro, I want to thank all visitors/residents for visiting our Interpretive Centre. In addition, I want to thank all my staff for all their hard work and dedication.

Our community and the Yukon Territory would benefit from more wellness programs. Wellness is a fundamental component of a community, and we understand the importance of attaining better physical and mental health. As a result, the recreation staff is working hard, looking into funding and partnership opportunities to restart the Women's Wellness Program. The last Women's Wellness Program was a great success. Thus, we would like to continue the program. In addition, we want to start a Men's Wellness Program more information will be shared soon.

The Town of Faro is Seeking Contractors in the community who may periodically be interested in short term contracts to clear and clean private properties where the landowner has been unable or unwilling to maintain their property after notice has been given and the Town is required to complete the work for the safety of the community under authority of the Property Maintenance Bylaw (Bylaw 08 04).

When Town Crews are unable to complete the work due to their own schedules, the Town has the authority to issue a contract to complete the work, pay the contractor, and invoice the property owner.

Periodically, the Town Office gets an inquiry about the availability of industrial land in Faro. Because most land around Faro is Crown Land, interested people usually end up contacting the Yukon Government Lands Branch (YGLB) about the possibility, after which the process was reported as being a bit challenging.

 The Town Office needs to know how much land a purchaser would need for their business (e.g.: 1 acre or 10 acres?)

Focused on Faro September 2022 Page 9

That is changing because the Town of Faro is working closely with YGLB to develop a new industrial subdivision and bring more industrial land to the community. Currently, we are reviewing a few sites that would lend themselves to development and marketing, possibly as early as next Spring.

Faro’s Volunteer Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2022 Fire Prevention Week theme. “It’s important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different,” said Kieth Austin, a/ Fire Chief. “Have a plan for everyone in the home. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Make sure that someone will help them!”

Job Postings

We were all saddened to hear of Heather Campbell’s unexpected passing last month. As many of you who were here then will recall, Heather was twice elected as Mayor of Faro, beginning in 2009 and serving till January 2014. Much of the earlier Building Canada Infrastructure Projects were started while she served as Mayor. As Mayor Heather took on the production of the local Community Monthly Newsletter, the Frozen Mukluk. This became a passion and she kept it alive even after her term as Mayor ending. Our thoughts are with her family and Heinz through this difficult time.
