“What’s that up in the road ... a head?” By Paul Lucas Alaska Hwy.Enroute Ft Nelson. I was starting to nod. This was a long drive. A pair of tail lights from a big transport loomed ahead the perfect beacon for a weary traveler. Stray thoughts drifted through my addled brain as I tracked those two red dots of light leading me east memories of previous trips in band vehicles large and small. Dease Lake,1982. The best vehicles for transporting a band and equipment in the North are the vans. Sticking your gear in the back of a truck is far from optimal. In the winter, everything freezes, then thaws not a great idea for either instruments or electronics. So, every now and then, we would rent a big old van so both our carcasses and equipment could ride in comfort. These vans don’t come cheap though. You’ve got both the rental and the gas to contend with. Then you have the problem of mileage, and on one particularly long trip to Dease Lake, we managed to overlook the mileage charge. Poring through the rental agreement in the glove box on our way east, (reading materials were in short supply), Ilene made a nasty discovery.

“Let’s see,” Stecker said, leaning over. Then, “Madre de Dios, this is highway robbery! There is no way we can afford this. We are going to have to figure something out.” Well, that something became known far and wide as the ‘Ozone Ranger Time Manipulation System’. The components of said system were simple: One cordless power drill set on reverse and one long suffering band member willing to lie under the van in the cold. The process consisted of disconnecting the speedometer cable at the transmission, inserting the free end into the chuck of the drill, and hitting the switch. It was, as the scientists say, the elegant solution. We weren’t sure it was going to work at first, so we waited. With bated, steaming breath puffing out of the hoods of our parkas, we stared at the speedometer through the open windows of the van. It took a while but then, sure enough, the numbers started spinning backwards … faster and faster ... and suddenly we were flying back in time. As the mileage melted away, we cheered. We were back in Butbusiness.thenthings got a little out of hand. The drill trigger stuck in lock position and it looked as if we might end up arriving back home before we left a suspicious detail that might have caught the attention of those car rental folks who didn’t believe in time travel. Fortunately, we caught it before it got out of hand, but we did have to drive around Whitehorse for a few hours after we returned to make sure it didn’t look like we had rented a van for three days just to go down to the corner store to buy a pack of cigarettes.

“You’ll never guess how much we are paying per mile for this thing. It’s going to cost us half of what we make tonight.”

ON THE ROAD VI

Alaska Hwy.Enroute-Atlin. Gig done, it was time to go home. The whole business the booking, the driving and the playing always seems like such a fine idea at the start, but in the end, there you are at the far end of the line, facing a long drive back through trying conditions. I slapped on my seat belt and paused before pulling out on to the highway. “Right,” I thought to myself, “Spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch?”

“Now where did I put that Sherlock Holmes tape ...”

There are lots of parts in an operation like this, but I was pretty sure I hadn’t forgotten anything. I was all set. Once in motion, I reached behind the front seat and pulled out my thermos of coffee.

“Oh yes we do,” replied Aggie, “and if you leave without coming by we will haunt you”. And so it was. Newfies! Bless their hearts.

Alaska Hwy.Enroute Ft Nelson. Finally, the lights of town came into view and the hotel loomed on my left. I was tired, but I wanted to get my stuff out of the car and loaded into the venue before it froze. I also wanted to check the place out before I ate and hit the hay.

The Fort Nelson Hotel boasts a palatial hall that consists of a main floor with balconies all around. The walls are covered in hunting trophies. Everything is there Grizzly and Black Bear, Sheep, Goat, Caribou, Moose, Wolverine you name it. It was some sort of cross between amazing and bizarre. As far as gigs in northern hotels and bars went this one was pretty typical. The place had both a lounge and a main room. I was playing the lounge, (being a single on this gig), and a couple of folks were playing the main room. I poked my head in on a break one night, and they were making a fine old racket for two people. We got to know each other over the following week, and ended up swapping stories and laughing the week away. These two were a married couple from Newfoundland Gerrie and Aggie Formanger. They were a talented pair. And kind. My gig was for one week, theirs for two. On my last night, I wished them both farewell, told them I needed to be up at 6 a.m. for the long drive back to Atlin, and started packing. They insisted that they wanted to cook me breakfast in the morning before I left. I laughed and said, “I don’t think you are going to want to get up at 5.30 and start cooking after a night in the tavern.”

The Atlin Community Library would like to extend a Big Thank You to summer patrons Julia and Greg Arehart for refurbishing our bedraggled Book Box which resides on the Courthouse front porch: waterproofed, repainted and re screwed. Many Thanks you two!

And God said, 'I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG. And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them. And they were comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

And God said, I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves.

Story of Adam & Eve's Dog

From the $150field

Adam and Eve said, 'Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you anymore. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us.'

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve And it was a good animal and God was pleased And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.

I am heartened by those who live nearby when they smile at neighbors to brighten their day. I admire those who laugh with neighbors by sharing stories in a funny way. I treasure those who discover ways to be kind to neighbors that lighten their way. I cherish those who value neighbors by reaching out to hear what they have to say. Jeff Salmon

True happiness is of a retired nature and an enemy to pomp and noise; it arises, in the first place, from the enjoyment of one’s self; and, in the next, from the friendship and conversations of a few select companions.
