Willow Man He was as strong as a grizzly bear. He was as big as a moose. He was as fast as a fox. He was brave like a wolverine. He was wise like an owl. He was busy like a beaver. He was fearless like a porcupine. He was invisible like a weasel. He can jump like a squirrel. He was agile like a sheep.

He can climb like a martin. He was graceful like an eagle. He was quiet like a mouse. He was alert like a muskrat. He had endurance like a wolf. He was warm as a linx. He was healthy as a mink. He can swim like an otter. He was precise like a hawk. He was kind like a rabbit. He migrated like the caribou. He was invisible like an ice bear. Willow man was a wise animal.

Year of Two Winters This story happened way back in history. It wasn‛t recorded so it‛s a mystery. There were two winters in a row. They had summer with snow. The summer never came And there were no game The winters came twice And the rivers had ice. The summer forgot to arrive

Community Listings .............. 15 Highlights .......................... 16

And it was hard to survive. people were caught off guard And times were very hard. There were no fish to eat An‛ it was hard to get caribou meat. People never got salmon And they faced famine. People kept warm by a flame. And the birds never came. They never used their canoes.

They only used their snowshoes. There was no summer to keep warm An‛ two winters did some harm. People faced two years of cold weather An‛ sometimes they only ate caribou leather. Survive two winters was tough And no summer was really rough. I think this was climate change because the weather acted strange.

D

on’t miss the deadline to register for the 27th annual Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay. Enjoy the beauty of the open road and scenery. Avoid being discouraged by chance encounters with Grizzly Bears. (Most years they are reported, but the race puts out signs and support vehicles ride between a bear and the rider.) Also do not be discouraged if you don’t consider yourself a serious racer who trains in advance or your type of bike. In fact you do not need a racing bike and many riders use mountain bikes. Even though the race is not until June 20, all registration, which is done online, begins Monday, March 16 at 12:01 AM. Spots fill up fast and there are no wait lists. Only a handful of people who register do not race.

In 2019, racers registered from Alberta, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Arizona, Illinois,New York State, Texas, Washington State and as far as Switzerland. To get more information and to register, visit their website kcibr. org. All registration fees are based on team size. Solo is $80, a twoperson team is $160, a four-person team is $320, and an eight-person team is $640.

Riders can choose from several categories: solo, two, four, and eight-person teams for men, women and mixed teams. To register a team, you will need: • team name, size (solo, two, four, and eight-person), gender (female, male, mixed) • team captain name, address, email address

Erika Serviss-Low loves seeing the mountains and hearing Yukoners’ stories.

his is getting serious. It’s time for an intervention before my latest existential crisis hits the point of no return. Someone who cares about me will surely step up soon to say, “OK Pal, put down the trowel. Turn off the lights and walk away while you can.” Truth is, I’m addicted. I’ve lost all control of my indoorgrowing habit. No sooner has one batch of oregano or rosemary emerged shyly from its earthy grave than I’ve planted three more to keep it company. I tell myself it’s therapeutic, and there are studies to back me up. A few weeks ago, some internet savant published an article claiming that the microbes in soil pump happiness hormones directly into the bloodstreams of gardeners and farmers. You know the ones: endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, etc. Chemicals our bodies manufacture when we jog, kiss someone spectacular, eat a perfect avocado, or witness a heart-stopping rainbow over the Yukon River Valley. They reduce anxiety and the psychic pain of being caught in a

universe that often seems to make no sense. Why obsess over the State of the Union, when you can turn your attention to the state of your onions? Why concern yourself with Cabinet leaks when you’re growing three separate strains of leek dating back to King Cadwaladr of Gwynedd in 673 A.D.? T

he weather in Dawson is a tad too uncertain to attempt a winter carnival. Much of January this year was below -30 degrees, dipping to -47 at times, and that’s without even mentioning the wind-chill factor. So Dawson celebrates what is almost spring, sort of the end of winter, with a very local, largely free event we call Thaw di Gras, which is, of course, a play on the idea of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras. The latter event is held the day before Ash Wednesday on the

E

Christian calendar and was on February 25 this year, but Dawson holds off until March. This year the dates are from Friday, March 13 at 4 p.m. to Sunday, March 15 at 10 p.m. The event is coordinated by the Klondike Visitors Association (KVA), though marketing manager Paul Robitaille is adamant that the KVA is far from solely responsible for it. “We actually organize four of the events, but there are about 40 of them,” he said.

Basically, the KVA simply reminds everyone that is normally involved that it’s time to get organized and confirms they will be participating this year. Without a long list of volunteers and the cooperation of many of the town’s establishments, the carnival just would not happen. “And if someone drops out of an event, we try to find someone else to run it,” said Robitaille. Last year there were 40+ events, some of which spread over the three days, and which took place all over town, though Robitaille said part of the charm is that most are an easy walking distance from the parking lot at Diamond Tooth Gerties. cont’d on page 9 ...

Provided by the Klondike Visitors Association That’s where 15 separate family-friendly events take place on Sunday afternoon, including smoosh board racing, kicksled demos, air rifle shooting, axe, log and chainsaw throws, tea boiling, ice cream eating, log sawing, and the crowd (and raven) favorite, the kid and adult egg toss events. One of the most popular with the kids is the loonies and candy in a haystack event. Then there is the one-dog pull event in the Eldorado Hotel parking lot, which hearkens back to the scene described In Jack London’s Call of the Wild. The Downtown Hotel offers a keg toss, CFYT-fm Trivia contest, and a rock-paper-scissors tourney. The Triple J compound houses the crokicurl/tuna can curling and will be adding a mini-putt (golf with hockey sticks and pucks) this year. Earlier on Sunday, the Westminster Hotel sponsors its annual chili cook-off and taste testing. If you prefer schnitzel, there’s an eating contest behind the Art and Margaret Fry Arena. On the Saturday, Gerties will be busy with the dog ball high ball (just what it sounds like) drink, Air North’s paper airplane toss, beer cap basketball and a fiddle show and square dance. Earlier on Saturday, there will be snowshoe baseball on the Rob-

ert Service School playgrounds, a dog show at Gerties, a cat show at Bombay Peggy’s and the youth lip sync at Gerties. There will also be a spring craft fair on March 14 in the ballroom at the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture—Dënäkär Zho. The adults will have had their turn on Friday night on the Gertie’s stage at the Dawson City Music Festival’s lip sync, which takes place a few hours after folks have signed up to carve some snow sculptures out of the prepared snow forms. There’s lots of snow for that event this year for sure. Outdoor events on Saturday include the Barry Fargey Sunnydale Classic Dogsled Race. Later on, there will be free sled rides. Outside the Westminster Hotel, the street will be filled with a road hockey tournament and there will be kicksled races on the Yukon River. New this year will be a snowmobile parade. A little farther afield, there is generally snowboarding and skiing on Moose Mountain. Robitaille said it would be impossible for anyone to take in everything, but KVA schedulers try to make it so that a person could partake of many events. Indoor events at the various bars include bum darts (don’t

ask), arm wrestling and an adult tricycle race. “Thaw di Gras is my favourite event of the year,” Robitaille said, stressing that the KVA’s involvement has tended to shift it from being a strictly local celebration of the season to a tourism draw that attracts more visitors each year, enough to make it worth Air North’s while to put on an extra flight for the weekend. “It’s a great weekend to showcase Dawson, for mainly other Yukoners.” He estimates that about 150 people came to town last year. At the time of this interview the schedule for the weekend was still in an early draft form, so it’s not certain when the fireworks will be yet, but there will be some. Your dogs will let you know when they start. Check the KVA website (DawsonCity.ca) for details and to view a short video made during last year’s event.

Japan must-sees

View over the Aso region

Where to go and what to do

Nagano

I was determined to see the snow monkeys that hang out in the hot springs just outside of Nagano. This is the only time I’ll say unfortunately it was pleasantly warm out while I was there, so there were no monkeys in need of warm water to defrost their butts. Thankfully, the tourism staff introduced me to the live webfeed of the hot springs before I made the journey there, or paid for the bus and park entrance. As the monkeys live in the surrounding mountains and only come down to warm up, you should aim for the cooler months to see them in person.

Kyoto

Kyoto has a bunch of great options for things to check out. From the bamboo forest, to the streets of old Kyoto, to Fushimi Inari Taisha. All options are pretty thick with tourists no matter what time of day you go, so accept it and go anyways. I hopped a train from Osaka and walked from the train station to the base of Mount Inari. If you think getting there before 7 a.m. will help you avoid the crowds you would be as wrong as I was. It wasn’t packed by any means, but there was already a smattering of people moving through the famous red torri gates that weave a trail up the mountain. There are shrines all the way up. After awhile it does become same-same, so you can choose how far up you want to go. The summit is anticlimactic as you’re in the forest and you don’t really know you’ve reached the peak until the trail starts descending.

Nara

Have you ever wanted to watch fat, friendly deer harass tourists for crackers? Nara is the place for you. A large park in town, affectionately named Deer Park, is full of wild deer who are well accustomed to people getting up close and personal. Locals sell special deer treats and the deer will bow to you to ask for one, but will quickly determine if you are not holding and move on to more interesting things.

Hiroshima

Hiroshima was incredibly emotional and it’s impossible to talk about this trip without mentioning it. I swear the air is a little thicker and the gravity is a little stronger here. Without going into too much detail, what I will say is nobody wins in war and unfortunately civilians paid the price. The museum is a must, though be warned it is extremely graphic and disturbing. It is beautifully done and it will absolutely ruin your day. And if that doesn’t get you, there are monuments dedicated to the prisoners of war, those who suffered and perished in the war at the hands of the Japanese that essentially say we did wrong, we are sorry and we will do better. Cue tears.

PHOTOS: Lauren Humble

I

t’s hard to pick out highlights when the whole country is beautiful, but I’ll do my best to separate out a few must-sees.

Mount Fuji, in all its glory

Kyushu

Japan has many active volcanoes and the lower part of the main islands, Kyushu, is a great place to go to get close to them. Mount Aso and Sakurajima are both accessible to tourism though Sakurajima. You can’t get anywhere near the extremely active crater, but there are hardened lava fields you can go check out. With Mount Aso, you may get up to the crater but it varies by day if you’re allowed close to it or not. As the activity was high and the crater was closed, I hiked up an adjacent mountain to get a view over the lowland speckled with farms. It’s a beautiful area to see whether or not you want to get close to the volcano.

Fuji

Sakurajima, an active Volcano in the South

I would have loved to hike Mount Fuji, but the climbing season ended at the beginning of September. It is a spectacular region to visit though, with lots of hiking and exploration possibilities in the five lakes region. I found another mountain to hike off Lake Motosu, called Mount Ryuu Ga Take, which would have had a spectacular view of Mount Fuji had it not been bashfully hidden behind clouds. I did get a great shot of Fuji at sunrise from the train station as I left for Tokyo though so I’ll take that as my send off.

Tokyo

Tokyo is its own beast. It is bright, exciting, bustling and, yes,

Japan must-sees ... cont’d crowded, though the crowds were far less overwhelming than I was expecting. Train stations are jampacked, but because everyone is on a mission to get somewhere, it’s kind of like being in a beehive where you all just somewhat seamlessly move around each other despite the density. Malls and tourist attractions are another story and if you get pedestrian road rage, I would avoid at all costs or at least go in prepared to move like molasses. Tokyo has all of the big city sparkle you think it will, with an endless amount of entertainment at your fingertips.

Hokaido

I should mention that if you are a skiing fiend, the North island is where you need to go! Fly into Sapporo then you can take the train to any number of ski resort towns to get some of that famous Ja-pow. If you ever have the opportunity to get to Japan, I strongly encourage you to take it. It’s safe, easy to navigate and the accommodations were all so nice it has effectively ruined me for backpacking other countries. Book that ticket, order a rail pass and, most importantly, prepare your belly and eyes for treats. Enjoy!

Grey Matters with Deborah McNevin

Vision quest

I

’ve worn glasses since I was 10 years old. I used to get a stronger prescription every two years. I always sort of looked forward to the resulting new, sharper eyesight. Over time, my lenses became heavier and heavier until I had to get the expensive lenses so that my ears would stop bleeding from the pressure of the glasses. Ugh, right? Eventually I had to accept that I was quite blind without my glasses. Even with them, I got floaters that would occasionally obstruct parts of my vision. With time, I learned to take the advice to ignore them. I adjusted. Then it was glaucoma. This is treatable with drops that I must take every night. I also keep a spare bottle in my emergency kit, along with other meds. I adjusted. Finally, I started to develop cataracts. With all the other eye problems, surgery was the best option. I adjusted to enduring more decline in my eyesight until my spot in line came up, but thanks to a cancellation I got to have the surgery done in both eyes this past month. I could not find definitive statistics on the number of Yukoners with cataracts, but I am most definitely not alone. I did find Canadian data. The University of British Columbia’s department of ophthalmology and visual sciences states that more than half of all people over the age of 65 have some form of cataracts. That percentage increases dramatically for those over 75. A bit of welcome news is that there are now surgeries scheduled at the Whitehorse General Hospital, which means I could get both eyes done within a week and sleep in my own bed. The day of my first eye surgery came after a rather restless night. I joined four other people in one of several waiting rooms. We were all experiencing different degrees of anxiety, compounded by the extended wait for our turn. At the same time, we shared stories, laughter and feelings of mutual support. There was a real sense of camaraderie as we waited, before and afterwards. I know I was quite happy to see some of the same people again when the procedure

was repeated for the other eye later that week. I was lucky in that everyone post-surgery chose not to share too many details about the experience. How you feel and react differ significantly from person to person, so I will spare you any details here. I will say it was much shorter than most dental work and, if you’re going in, be sure to try to ignore the machine noises. It is kind of miraculous when you think about it. You are in and out the same day. First, the surgery, and then a check by the ophthalmologist. Recovery involves taking drops four times a day for varying periods of time, wearing an eye shield to bed for five nights, and avoiding lifting, vigorous exercise, or bending for seven days. (I am very good with avoiding exercise, so that has been no problem!) It takes a while for my vision to settle down fully. Then I can get a new pair of glasses. Now I can drive and read and play bridge and attend meetings, so things are good. I am adjusting! In case you need this surgery, there are a few things I would like to pass on, over and above the great lists you will get. Do not put a password on your phone if you want to use it (like calling your ride or listening to a podcast) after the surgery. The numbers can be very fuzzy. Not bending was the hardest thing. Tongs or grabber tools can really help, unless you are a klutz like me. I inevitably dropped them and promptly bent over to pick them up! Try not to trip over your cat and then try to pick her up for a cuddle. Smart speakers can be a good friend. They can remind you when to take your drops. They can also play music, read audiobooks and tell terrible jokes. Set things up beforehand as you may not be able to see the app on your device clearly for a bit. If you have arthritic fingers, get a device to squeeze the drop bottle when you pick up the prescription. If you hate putting drops in your eye, also ask for a device that makes it easy and practice beforehand, as the instructions

PHOTO: Deborah McNevin may be hard to read. I have been enjoying so many first things since the procedure: the first time I could stand to look at the bright sunny snow; the thrill of not having to wear glasses around the house; the pleasure of listening to an audiobook from the library to give my eyes a rest; the sense of great good fortune at

It takes a while for my vision to settle down fully and then I can get a new pair of glasses the medical miracle and support which are helping to restore some of my eyesight. Of course, I still cannot see in the dark or shoot lasers from my eyes, but maybe in the future?

Learning so much more than just reading, writing and arithmetic by Io Demers

think there is someone who deserves some recognition. Her name is Mrs. Beemer and she’s a kindergarten teacher at Jack Hulland Elementary School. More than a teacher though, this woman is a superhero. She goes above and beyond pretty much every day. I don’t think I’ve ever met a better person. I work with kids every day and I have learned so much from her. She could retire. She’s earned it after all these years, but she has wondered aloud what she would do without the kids. The real question is what would the kids do without her? Some, including me, believe her school would be a sadder place without the love and sheer affection Mrs. Beemer has for all her kids. For all kids, period. I’ve worked in almost all of our Yukon schools and I can truly testify that we have some pretty wonderful teachers, but she is a light that shines so bright that everyone is drawn to it. She goes the extra mile for her kids and their families, often providing that extra bit of help that allows a struggling family to hang in just a bit longer. Whether that help is with practicalities, finances, or just a listening, non-judgemental ear, Mrs. Beemer is there. One little girl was terrified of entering kindergarten until her teacher-to-be started emailing her over the summer, telling her how much she looked forward to having her in the class. The girl’s mother told me that on the first day of school, her daughter was in tears, insisting she didn’t want to go until she received a message from her teacher that very morning. Suddenly she was in the car. I’ve seen kids so scared of visiting the school dental room that they wouldn’t even enter the room. A few minutes later, there they were in

The city bus driver who knows where I work called my office asking for “the woman who rides the bus in the morning.” She asked me if I forgot my sandwich and offered to bring it to me. Erika Serviss-Low

the chair, getting their teeth counted while Mrs. Beemer held their hand, beaming because she knew they could do it. And the kids were proud too. That’s what she does. I’ve never met anyone who can see the potential in each little person like she can. I’m sure she gets frustrated and tired and probably even annoyed, but I’ve never heard her raise her voice. Her kids learn how to treat others just by watching Mrs. Beemer every day. Year after year the kids come and the kids go, but they don’t forget her. They may not be in her class anymore, but they can always get a hug and an encouraging word on the playground. I’ve spoken to high school kids and when they realize I know Mrs. Beemer, it’s like they’re five again as they tell me about their favorite teacher and how kind and patient she was. Not to mention silly. I’m not the only wistful adult who wishes they had been in her class. And you know what? Mrs. Beemer doesn’t forget her kids. My foster daughter is turning 20 this year and every once in a while, Mrs. Beemer still asks about her. I’ll bet she can’t go anywhere in the Yukon without running into one of “her kids” whatever age they may be now. I think what I admire most about her is that day after day, she shows up. Whatever her health issues, or other challenges, she can usually be found in her classroom, doling out kind words and hugs to those who need them. She sets the standard. When I grow up, I want to be just like her. I think I might even want to be a teacher. Sincerely, Io Demers

I’d like to thank the Yukon First Nations Wildfire firefighters, Chad Thomas and Jordan Profeit who went to Australia to help during the awful 2020 bushfire season. Chelsey MacDonald
