n the Focus Gallery, row upon row of colourful, clever, often whimsical postcards cover much of the walls. Every postcard features an original artwork, with a message written on the back. The postcards are hung with bull clips so people can take them down and read them.

PHOTOS: Heather LeDuc The postcards are part of an exhibition entitled Eleventy-Leven: 11 Years of Collaboration and Exchange. The show includes work by Joyce Majiski of Whitehorse and Zea Morvitz of Inverness, California. The two artists exchanged postcards with each other every Friday in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2019. In the 2011 iteration of the exchange, the artists didn’t have a theme. They began the project

with a standard postcard size (5” x 7”), then they started to get a little more creative, according to Majiski. She made a pop-up card. Morvitz responded likewise, with a pop-up card of her own. Then Morvitz started to “one-up” Majiski by enclosing small books as part of the exchange. The inventiveness ramped up from there. The next exchange in 2012 had the alphabet as its theme, while a third exchange focused on alchemy. “I can’t say anything’s my favourite,” says Majiski. “But I do love our alchemy exchange because there’s a lot of science in there.” I love the alchemy exchange as well. It reminds me of an ancient and marvelous tarot deck. Morvitz drew fantastic creatures encased in globes. Majiski offered a few glimpses into her life, including her experience with knee surgery. She humourously depicts it with 16th century barber surgeons holding her down as she thrashes on the bed. The postcards are like mini journals, capturing the artists’ creative journeys over time. For Majiski, the exchange was also something of a travelogue. The postcards document when she first became interested in water as a theme, reflected in larger exhibitions in Spain and Mexico, and The Song of the Whale at the Yukon Arts Centre in 2020. As the exhibition chronicles, the collaboration grew beyond the postcard exchanges. The artists’

first full collaboration, where they literally made the work together, comprises two long scrolls on rice paper featuring Miles Canyon. Morvitz came to Whitehorse and the pair went to Miles Canyon. Each artist started working on separate pieces of rice paper, then moved on to work on the centre of the other artist’s piece. They continued the collaboration in Morvitz’s California studio. “We really had a sense of trust and a lot of respect for each other, so working on the same piece seemed to be quite a natural, fluid thing to do,” says PHOTOS: Heather LeDuc Majiski. The artists went on to co-create two larger accordionstyle books, one which incorporates the wabi-sabi aesthetic, another with the theme of water. This collaboration had the artists exchanging and working on the same pieces. They used many media in creating the books. For example, Majiski used a letter press, while Morwitz used frottage – making marks by rubbing the paper on objects such as rocks. The research and artistic exploration involved in their collaborations fed into their solo practices. Smaller work is intertwined with larger work. “Everything is related to everything else,” Majiski says. Did she ever get tired of the commitment to exchange work with Morvitz? Majiski says no. “This is a way

October is national library month and October 18-23 is Yukon Public Libraries Week!

T

he theme of this year’s festivities is ‘One Million Possibilities,’ which speaks to the many things you learn, discover and do at your local library! Whitehorse Public Library will be hosting a Seniors Appreciation Day October 21 from 10 AM to 1

PM, with refreshments, snacks and the opportunity to learn about technology available at the library. There will also be an open house at the library October 23 from noon to 4 PM, with contests, draws and prizes. Outside of books (and who doesn’t love books?) Director of Public Libraries Melissa Yu Schott says the library is trying to showcase some of its other features, including a host of online resources and accessibility tools. The Whitehorse library has recently installed an accessibility station, with a desk that moves up and down, large-print keyboard and

easy-to-use mouse for folks with mobility and sight issues. They also have a c-pen reader, which helps folks with difficulty reading by scanning text, reading it aloud to them and allowing them to look up indecipherable words through a reference guide. These handy devices are also available to check out, which is great for people thinking about buying one and want to try it out first, says Yu Schott. Libraries across the territory are celebrating Yukon Public Libraries Week. Visit your local library to see what’s going on near you! n

CONFESSIONS OF A CANNY CAN COLLECTOR Observations from the frontlines

I

admit it. I collect cans. Because I can. It started when I had dogs. Their food was expensive and they ate a lot of it. Because I was carrying a plastic bag anyway when we walked around Porter Creek, I picked up refundable cans and cashed them in to subsidize the dog food. I had great visions of making the dogs earn their keep by training them to be brave beerhunters, running ahead to detect fresh beer cans in the ditches and barking to let me know. Unfortunately, the dogs did not share my vision. They refused to play along, saying it was degrading. So I picked up cans without their help. Even now that the dogs have departed, I continue to walk. I still pick up cans on a regular loop through Porter Creek and occasionally on country roads and trails. The neighbours find it mildly amusing, but it has led me to some interesting observations. Strictly residential areas, e.g., those with “Crescent” or “Place” in their names, almost NEVER produce any discarded cans. Most cans come from major thorough-

fares that have schools or businesses on them. Do people discard their cans before they get home or as they’re heading out to work? The chance of finding can concentrations is highest in the parking lots of off-sales outlets where the cans are all flattened by vehicles. Yeah, scary. I avoid those areas in the evenings when business is brisk. The can harvest has increased significantly since the start of COVID. Are people drinking more? Or just throwing more? Or both? Along rural roads and ATV trails, the cans are generally beer, mostly Budweiser and Kokanee. In town, it’s largely energy drinks, cider and alcoholic coolers. Do the same people drink different beverages once they leave town? Yukon Brewing and Winterlong have made minor inroads in recent years with the can-casting crowd, but they still have a long way to go. Or maybe they don’t want that market? The can harvest at the high school starts off slowly in August and builds over the school year, with new cans appearing in the woods and parking lot on weekends, peaking the week after grad. Do students prefer a familiar area for after-school drinking? Once I pick up all the cans in an area, new ones appear almost im-

One month’s harvest from Porter Creek streets: over 500 refundable cans mediately. It’s interesting, or perhaps discouraging, to realize that refundable cans are a renewal resource. Cans are by far the highest proportion of tossed refundables. Yes, there are some plastic water and rum bottles and even fewer glass beer bottles. But why do Yukoners love to throw cans? A surprising number of cans are not empty. I’m not talking about a residual sip or two. These are new cans, a day or two old, sometimes half full, sloshing along sidewalks. There are even unopened cans. Maybe some Yukoners throw faster than they can drink. But just how lucrative is this? I decided to count what I picked up just on my regular eight-kilometre route through Porter Creek. In the two-week period straddling the start of high school, I collected 260 refundable cans. That’s $6.50/week, which is more than $300/year on cans alone at that rate. I haven’t calculated the bottle bonanza, but I’m sure the dogs would be impressed. And well fed. n

However, it wasn’t until the last five years that she started making artwork after she left her camp job. “When I first started do this – the beadwork, the whole fashion journey – was five years ago and [I was] just randomly talking, ‘One of these days my stuff is going to be in a gallery, it’s going to be on a runway, people are going to know me.’” Peter’s determination and exceptional talent have brought her to where she wanted to be. She’s now having her first gallery show. “The show is amazing, I’m like super happy,” she says. “I was there when they set it up, and I

Models wearing Natasha Peter’s dresses. Peter’s daughter on far right to play with different media too. Anything goes. I allow myself to do whatever I want. And I do, I use all my little scraps.” She adds that it’s a practice, “like exercising a muscle.” Now, with the exhibition, she gets to see the magic of all the collaboration and exchange in one space. And it looks amazing. “Every week I do this thing,” she says, referring to the postcard projects. “And then I do this thing

and then I do this thing. And now I see it all together and it’s like, ‘Holy shit! Look at all this stuff we made!’” In the Edge Gallery, visitors are immediately greeted with pops of vibrant red, blue, pink and violet. The colours come from the floral granny hanky fabric used by Natasha Peter, an emerging fashion designer originally from Ross River. Peter’s exhibition is titled

Using both traditional and contemporary influences, Peter’s work features modern dresses sewn from the granny hanky fabric, which she says brings back memories from her childhood. There are also jean jackets embellished with the fabric. Even footwear is adorned with the hanky design, including heeled booties and a gorgeous pair of

white mukluks. The clothing is accented by jewellery, some of which is a mix of beadwork and other materials, such as fur and horse hair. Other pieces are made from carved materials such as ivory or antler, and have a wonderful symmetry and balance. All of the work was designed and made by Peter, who learned sewing and beading from Elders in Ross River. She also learned how

Red Granny Heels and Arctic Fox Mukluks was kind of like, holding back my tears. I was like ‘Oh my god I can’t believe this is happening.’” She’s also been invited to participate in a fashion show in Alberta, which was postponed due to COVID-19. Peter started making work as a hobby and a way to make some extra income after returning to school. However, it wasn’t long before she was getting noticed on social media and people across Canada were asking for custom orders of her clothing. Seal Skin corset “I couldn’t believe that,” she says. “I was so impressed with that.” Peter’s passion for fashion has more than financial rewards. The process of designing and making clothing and jewelry is therapeutic as well. “Little did I know that when I created it, it was healing me,” she says. Peter gets her design ideas from a number of sources. She’ll

find things she likes on the internet or in magazines. Or she’ll take a walk and be inspired by what she sees. “An idea hits my head, and I make it,” she says. “It’s like that with everything I make.” She’s incredibly productive. With the exception of a sealskin corset, everything in the Arts Underground show was made in one month. Last summer she filled 20 jean jacket custom orders in a month. With so much production underway, Peter’s Kaska Dena Designs became an official business last month. Her business license is framed and hanging on her wall. She’s taking programs in business at Däna Näye Ventures and Yukonstruct. Most importantly, she’s proud of what she’s accomplished. “There’s a lot of things I still need to do but it all comes in time and I’ve made it this far,” she says. “And I can’t believe I made it this far. This is the first, the very first thing I’ve done in my life that I’ve stuck it out, this long. And I’m pretty impressed with it.” Eleventy-Leven and Kaska Dena Designs are showing at Arts Underground until October 30. n

THERE IS A SEASON

S

eptember is quite a month isn’t it? There are lots of poems about it, all from the perspective of the northern hemisphere of course. It’s a month that seems to dig deep into the range of our emotions. The end of summer. Inevitably, we all say “where did the summer go?” a little wistfully, perhaps regretting not doing all the things we’d imagined as the summer approached only a few months ago. As the seasons turn, so do our lives (did that sound like a soap opera?) and for those of us who are inclined that way, the sight of the first yellow leaf can send us spinning into the wonder and anxieties of aging.

Along with that, though, there are the autumn colours, the fireweed on the hills, and the intensity of the yellow leaves against the impossibly blue skies. Produce from farms and gardens, the nip of frost in the air, watching the mountains for signs of snow and, recently, the appearance of pumpkin spice everything. For me, though, September has always taken me back to the excitement of starting a new school year. I feel energized and hopeful. In elementary school, that took the form of new shoes, brand new scribblers (yellow for arithmetic, blue for social studies, green for science, every year the same colours) and, if my mom would allow it, brand new pencil crayons. It was a heady mixture! A new teacher and maybe, just maybe, Janet Kelly would let me be her friend

this year! During high school, the excitement was tempered by hormones and attitude, but it was still there. And now, I’m 67; the autumn of my own life. I haven’t gone back to school in quite some time. I don’t buy new shoes and I don’t get new pencil crayons, but I do change the accent colours in my office and my home. I dig out the autumn-coloured sweaters and I still get the “September squiggles” in my stomach. What will the season bring? What new thing will I learn? Who will I meet and what might unfold this season? Someone has wisely said that every year the leaves teach us how beautiful it is to let go. I am trying to let go of the things that need letting go and to embrace the gifts of this season of my life. n

PINEAPPLE BOURBON RICE PUDDING

eftover rice is a perfect blank canvas for TONS of fantastic dishes. Pineapple and bourbon make this simple rice pudding a bit more interesting. If you’re a fan of bourbon, try pouring an additional half (or full) shot on top of the pudding just before serving. Lots of people prefer their rice pudding cold, but this one seems

to really shine, warm or room temperature. Serves 4

WELCOME TO THE BELLY OF THE BISON!

”Elegant comfort food” at Whitehorse’s newest restaurant, Belly of the Bison

A new Whitehorse restaurant in the Edgewater Hotel is the toast of the town

W

hen Katja Schmidt was hired in January by Northern Vision Development (NVD) as the president of food and beverage at their new Whitehorse restaurant, Belly of the Bison, she had two priorities to make her vision come to life: the atmosphere had to fit the theme of the Edgewater hotel, where is the restaurant is located, and it also had to reflect the feel of the Yukon as a whole. “I liked the image of the bison because it is an import to the Yukon, like so many Yukon-

ers who come from all over and find their home in our territory,” Schmidt, whom NVD has dubbed the restaurant’s “creative eye,” told What’s Up Yukon. “The belly of an animal is a food-inspired concept, which I think harnesses the warmth and nourishment we wanted to convey. The two ideas just fit well together and had a nice ring!” Striving for excellence and uniqueness in all aspects, Schmidt and the Belly of the Bison team have worked hard to craft a topnotch menu and create a special

atmosphere for its diners. The location is also unbeatable, said Schmidt, as the restaurant is right on Front Street, overlooking the Yukon River. According to Schmidt, this is something the team is eager to take advantage of next summer with an outdoor patio. When it comes to the food, Belly of the Bison offers an impressive host of dishes that are “upscale but simple,” as Scmidt describes them. “The food is elegant comfort food,” she said. The menu boasts appetizers like

to put a modern spin on classic drinks. Names like “Bison Sour” and “Where the Buffalo Roams” fit with the Yukon wilderness theme. Having opened just in early August, the restaurant has been creating a buzz and attracting locals by the masses. The timing of Belly of the Bison’s opening couldn’t have been more convenient, with

many COVID-based restrictions on indoor dining places being lifted this summer and Yukoners being eager to start enjoying nights out again. “The reception so far has been extraordinary! I’m so thrilled to see so many familiar Yukon faces paying us a visit,” said Schmidt. “It has definitely been busy, as I

think many people are keen to get out and celebrate as things open up, and the vibe in the restaurant really reflects this positive outlook.” Though the Yukon has a handful of restaurants and bars that offer a unique experience inspired by the land and way of life in the cont’d on page 16 ...

Welcome to the Belly of the Bison! ... cont’d from page 15

PHOTO: Crystal Schick territory, Belly of the Bison is no copy of any other, but rather yet another name to add to the list of local specialty establishments. The simultaneously energetic and relaxing feel of the restaurant makes it an easy spot to choose, according to Schmidt. “The atmosphere is lively, but set against ambient candlelight,”

said Schmidt. “It’s the kind of place you can go to for any occasion, be it to celebrate with friends or enjoy a romantic date.” Though they have only been in operation a few months, the team at Belly of the Bison have found themselves swamped, in the best way possible, with an endless rush of Yukoners coming out to see

the restaurant and try the food, but being constantly busy hasn’t stopped them from finding time to work on new plans. In the foreseeable future, Schmidt said she plans to open for breakfast and lunch, in addition to the dinner service the restaurant already offers. This would not only mean increased

hours and ability to serve more guests as a result, but also new dishes for the different times of day. Part of the reason the team is working to offer additional meal services is because the restaurant is located in a hotel, and with tourism likely to return in a major way next spring and summer, Schmidt and her colleagues

want to be able to serve guests of the Edgewater Hotel in all ways possible, as well as continuing to provide an exciting dining experience to locals. “We are just in the process of building our staff to make this happen, and look forward to seeing more Yukoners at all hours of the day,” said Schmidt. n

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Get involved

October 18 to 24 is Waste Reduction Week

ave you waited for a day to kick back and celebrate all the recycling you have done? Or to bask in the glory that is your compost heap? Well then, I have great news for you: Waste Reduction Week is happening October 18 to 24! So spray champagne wildly about! You earned it. Just remember to recycle the bottle. The event aims to empower Canadians, to increase awareness, but also to encourage the adoption of more environmentally conscious choices in our lives. By making small changes, we can send a powerful signal to government and businesses that the days of disposability are over. Zero Waste Yukon and Raven Recycling celebrate this event each year, not only to raise awareness, but also to celebrate how our communities have succeeded. It is remarkable that across our territory, places considered remote by some, we have developed recyc-

ies, or through large-scale external investment, but rather by the efforts of members of our community. We’ve gone from non-profit, penny-a-bottle recycling, to a

reduction in greenhouse gasses equivalent to 89,000 tonnes in the last 10 years through recycling; from composting worms hidden away in basement containers to a city wide green bin system. This year, Raven and Zero Waste Yukon are not celebrating alone and have collaborated with the City of Whitehorse, Love2Thrift Whitehorse Community Thrift Store and other community organizations to host a series of events that highlight the successes of our community. This includes our city compost program, which continues to grow with the development of new facilities at the landfill.

We’re also celebrating the work of the Love2Thrift Store, not only because of their work to reduce waste, but also to provide equitable access to clothing. In partnership with Computers for Schools Yukon, we will be offering a free ewaste pick-up service as a reminder that in Yukon we have free ewaste recycling at Raven. We will also use social media to feature individuals and businesses throughout the week that have found new solutions and new ideas to reduce their own waste. The narrative about environmental issues is often focused only on the negatives. Many of us can lose our motivation or capability to change what feels like overwhelming challenges. It is this sense of doom that takes away our sense of control and limits our potential to dream of a better future. Although it’s true that we have lots of work yet to do, we can look back at individuals in our community who were the first to say “we can do this better” and changed their communities forever. Furthermore, when we know what we have achieved and can dream of something better, then we can stand up to those who say it’s too hard. It is that strength of community that can demand better policy from our politicians or tell businesses that it’s time for them to step up for the community. To follow Waste Reduction Week in Yukon, follow any of Zero Waste Yukon’s social media pages, or for more information on the event, visit: wrwcanada.com. n

COMMUNITY First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun Memorial Blanket This summer, Victoria Gold was privileged to provide First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun citizen Velma Olsen with $1500 to support her stunning and moving For the Children Lost blanket, which pays homage to the unmarked graves found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in May. Velma, who was born and raised in the Village of Mayo, is the daughter of a residential school survivor and the proud mother of two grown children. An artist and crafter, she is drawn to her mother’s passion for beading and preserving the art form’s importance for future generations. “My reason for starting the For the Children Lost blanket was to honour all the children who were taken and never made it home,” says Velma. “As a mother, my heart broke. Not only for the children, but for the mother’s arms they were taken from. In my mind, I searched for a way to respect these children and I thought that moccasin tops would be so fitting.” Velma posted a call out through social media for baby moccasin tops (vamps) and received an overwhelming response from people all across Canada and into the U.S. She then set to work to create a large blanket with each moccasin top sewn into it.

First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun citizen Velma Olsen with her For the Children Lost blanket, which pays homage to the unmarked graves found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in May.

“It took me about three months to create but I completed it! 404 vamps sewn down with love and care,” continues Velma. “I was so proud to be able to fly to Kamloops and present the memorial blanket to the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation in memory of the 215 children lost at the former residential school there.”

VICTORIA GOLD is the owner and operator of the Eagle Gold Mine located northwest of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND). The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens. If you are a Yukoner with mining experience, Victoria Gold encourages you to become a Yukoner At Work. Visit the “Work For Us” page at vgcx.com/contact/ work-for-us/ and send your resume to greatpeoplework@vgcx.com.
