HEY NOW, YOU’RE AN ALLSPARK!

To say the Yukon Allsparks have been on a roll is an understatement. After coming away from the B.C. provincial FIRST Lego League Challenge, they will be heading down to California to compete at an international level. From tens of thousands of teams, around 100 have been invited to the global Western Edge FIRST Lego League Open, which will involve three days of competition with teams from all over the world, in Long Beach, California.

The Yukon Allsparks is made

up of Johnathon Coyne and Ethan Janes, who are in grades nine and seven, respectively. Coyne and Janes met at a Lego robotics camp put on by Robotics North Society, where they enjoyed themselves and learned so much that they decided to start a team, afterwards, after being assigned to each other as random partners. They have been competing as the Yukon Allsparks since 2019, for four seasons.

“They randomly assigned partners for the camp,” said Coyne. “There were twenty other partners we could have gotten assigned to.”

Before COVID, the Yukon Allsparks had more team members, but Coyne and Janes were able to continue working together as a social bubble during lockdowns. Since Coyne is at the age to move into the next division of FIRST robotics, Janes and his father, Kevin, who is a coach of the Allsparks, hope to recruit some more team members in the future.

“I really enjoy coding and watching robots go,” said Janes. “I like designing the mechanical aspects.”

Both Coyne and Janes feel the championships in California are creeping up on them, and they share a mix of excitement and nerves.

“I’m pretty excited to go down to the States,” said Coyne. “It’s my first time going down to the States, not counting Alaska.”

Jumping in, Janes added, “This is the world level; we’re competing against international teams. It feels kind of weird being a Yukon team.”

Coyne said, as far as goals go, he wants to have fun, meet new people and learn about other robotics initiatives that might benefit other parts of the world, with issues that could be solved by robotics he hadn’t previously con-

The Yukon Allsparks holding the Championship Finalist Award (2nd place) at the British Columbia First Lego League Challenge Championship held on March 11, 2023

This is the first time that a FIRST Lego League team from the Yukon has made it down to the world championships, so the Allsparks feel proud to represent the territory on this global stage, for the first time, and are looking forward to being ambassadors of the North.

At the championships, the chosen teams will be competing against one another with Legobased robotics missions designed by the teams to solve an issue, with robots built to do so. This year’s theme is energy, which can include generation, transmission, as well as use and storage of energy, Janes’ father Kevin explained. “Each team will have an innovation project, which is like a research project, but they have to come up with a solution to the problem they’ve researched, or improve an existing solution,” he said.

The Allsparks project is centered around improving solar panels, as the team members explained, something that would definitely benefit the Yukon and beyond.

Johnathon Coyne on the left, and Ethan Janes on the right. The Yukon Allsparks presenting their Innovation Project on cleaning solar panels at the British Columbia First Lego League Challenge Championship held on March 11, 2023

“Usually, when you have a solar panel in the Yukon, there’s snow that goes onto it, and it really doesn’t work so well in the winter,” said Coyne. “Our idea is to remove different types of debris— it doesn’t have to be snow; it can also be leaves and other types of debris—so, it’s like a windshield wiper that goes up and down to clear the debris off a solar panel. We would have a system that dispenses water onto it, as well, and this would all be controlled via an app on your cell phone.”

Originally, the concept was to help solar panels operate at their maximum potential in the Yukon.

The idea started with clearing snow, but the Allsparks quickly realized the system could help in other parts of the world that don’t see much snow but have leaves, sand and other types of debris affecting their solar panels.

To be represented on a global stage can serve as an opportunity to show people from other parts of the world that the Yukon isn’t

just a rural little place next to Alaska, but also a hub of innovation and creativity.

“It gives some exposure to what the Yukon is and all the beauty and the cool tourist destinations here,” said Coyne. “It doesn’t matter how small your place is; if you try your hardest, you can go on to an international level.”

An aspect of the tournament the Allsparks are looking forward to is an “On the Spot” segment where teams will be presented with missions that nobody has seen before and where they have to put their heads together to create a solution, with Lego robotics, within a 10-hour span.

“All the things we’ve worked on up until now, we’ve had months to prepare and get ready for and practice and research,” said Janes. “But the ‘On the Spot’ is gonna be a mad scramble for a couple of hours.”

The Western Edge FIRST Lego League Open championship takes place May 12–14. Though they

are going to compete, Coyne and Janes are excited for the educational opportunities they’ll get from seeing what other teams, from other parts of the world, have come up with, and maybe even find some ideas to take back to the Yukon for their own future projects.

“Things that first come to mind with us, when we think about problems with energy, might be completely different halfway across the world,” said Janes.

Through the rest of their schooling in the Yukon and afterwards, the Allsparks hope to continue their work with innovation in robotics. The team has received lots of support from the Yukon’s business community, to attend, and appreciates the support.

“There’s gonna be hundreds of people there,” said Janes. “It’s gonna be really exciting.”

VICTORIA DAY MUSINGS AND MEANDERINGS

Some fun and creative ideas about what to do on this May long weekend

For some, it’s drinking beer and camping; for others, it’s cleaning the yard and gardening: Victoria Day is just around the corner and here are some tips on how to spend the weekend.

This is one holiday that Yukoners have been looking forward to for months and it begins Friday, May 19.

Queen Victoria’s birthday has nothing to do with this (for gardeners, it’s all about the weather). It is a weekend where it is safe to plant an outdoor garden in the Yukon. One has to be quick if one wants to buy broccoli, cauliflower or zucchini babies in town: they often sell out by May long weekend. Time to sink your fingers into black soil and create new life. If you need help, yukongrow.com has a blog with lots of tips on how to get started growing.

CAMPING

Yukoners are eager to get outside and do some camping, and now it’s finally warm enough to sleep in a tent. There are over 50 campgrounds and day-use recreation sites in the Yukon that open May 19. Campgrounds such as Kusuwa Lake are open, but, watch out, there might still be huge puddles of water that you have to drive through. You might not get through if you are driving a small car. People who want to stay close to Whitehorse may choose from the following government campgrounds: the Fox Lake, Lake Laberge, Marsh Lake, Pine Lake, Snafu Lake, Squanga Lake, Tarfu Lake, Twin Lakes and Wolf Creek campgrounds.

It is still cold at night, so bring plenty of warm clothing. And you need a permit for camping. Buy your campground pass now and you can enjoy unlimited access to campgrounds all summer long. For a list of campgrounds, visit yukon. ca/en/find-status-yukon-campgrounds-and-recreation-sites

Yukoners are always eager to get outside and do some camping on the May long weekend

TRAVELLING

Ever wanted to travel to Kamloops? Air North is offering May limited-edition flights to Kamloops during the May long weekend. Enjoy the sunshine and milder temperatures in Kamloops. Visit the farmers market on Saturday. And cafés and restaurants dot the downtown area. Explore Kamloops’ arts and culture scene and learn about Indigenous history. The Secwépemc Museum and Heritage Park is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Indigenous culture and language. The Secwépemc Museum offers tours of the Kamloops Indian Residential School that was in operation from 1890 to 1969, when the federal government took over to operate it as a residence for a day school. It was shut down in 1978 and, just recently, the museum started to offer educational tours of the former residential school and also educate visitors about this dark part of Canadian history.

You can email the museum for further inquiry at museum@ttes.ca. And you can visit Kamloops Heritage Railway Park to learn more about the Canadian Railway and steam trains.

If you are ready to be entertained, visit The Effie Arts Collective, on May 20, and watch the stand-up comedy trio: Scott Porteous, Frank Russo and Mike Payne.

“TRAVELLING” INDOORS

What can you do if you don’t have the opportunity to go out of town? On May 21, the Black Travel Summit will offer online live sessions with travel influencers, experts and others, to discuss topics on Black culture and travel. And eventbrite.ca will offer various online events around the May long weekend. Another online event is the Career Fair by Tech Career Fair. It is a virtual Career Fair with fast-growing start-ups and 500 companies in technology in the U.S. and Canada. If you are keen on learning more about a career in the tech industry, this might be something for you.

ENJOY SOME SOLITUDE

There are no festivals going on over the May long weekend (and no events at the Yukon Arts Centre), so Whitehorse can feel lonely during the Victoria Day weekend. If you are longing for some alone time, the long weekend is the perfect time to stay in town. If you don’t want to stay indoors the whole time, you can have local amenities “all to yourself.” Popular spots, such as Baked Café or Bean North Coffee Shop, might not be crowded because the masses have left to go camping and adventuring. Nearby mountains, such as Grey Mountain, and the local bike trails provide opportunities to get your share of adventure if you are staying in town. n

SEASONAL RECIPES

TUNA RICE BALLS

Wrapped In Roasted Seaweed Sheets

One portion of rice

Tuna rice balls wrapped in roasted seaweed sheets is a wordy way of saying Tuna Onigiri. You can fill these rice balls with just about anything (spam, leftover cooked meats and fish, peanut butter). They are great to take for a packed lunch or snack. When you season the tuna, do so completely to your taste; you don’t even have to add mayo (but I think you should).

Serves 1.

Ingredients:

❑ 2 cups sushi rice, cooked according to package directions

❑ 1 Tbsp rice seasoning (or 1 Tbsp rice vinegar and two tsp sugar)

❑ 2 cans of tuna

❑ 1 to 4 Tbsp mayonnaise, depending on your taste

❑ Sliced scallions (optional)

❑ Sriracha (optional)

❑ Toasted sesame seeds (optional)

❑ Salt, to taste

❑ 4 sheets roasted seaweed (a.k.a. nori), each sheet cut in half

Instructions:

1. Cook the rice according to package directions. While you can absolutely make a good sticky sushi-style rice in a pot, I think a rice cooker is the best option if you have one. When the rice is still warm, but cool enough to handle, sprinkle the rice seasoning over it and then gently fold the rice with a spatula to incorporate it.

2. Mix the rice with mayo (or not) and any of the optional additions and season with salt, to taste.

3. Divide the rice into 8 equal portions, form a round of rice with a dent in the center, then fold the rice around the tuna. Form the rice ball into a triangle, then wrap with a piece of nori. Repeat with remaining ingredients and serve immediately. n

GATHER

TOWER OF BEAUTY: HOMEMADE ‘LAMBURGERS’

At the end of August 2021, I picked up a lamb shoulder roast from the Takhini River Ranch booth at the Fireweed Community Market in Whitehorse

The farmers, Jackie and Scott Dickson, were both in attendance. As she handed me my roast, Jackie dispensed some excellent advice: “Just look up Jamie Oliver. He’s got a great recipe for cooking it long and slow.” She was right, it was a great recipe, and the lamb turned out beautifully. I was primed for more lamb. So, last fall, when a friend texted, “Hey, I’m ordering lamb. Do you want one?”

I texted back: “Who’s the farmer?”

“Takhini River Ranch.”

“Yes!”

My roommate and I have been eating fabulous lamb ever since. The Dicksons have been farming since 2006 near the Takhini River— mostly beef, but some lamb, said Jackie, “Because we love lamb.”

In 2018, Scott Dickson received a Meat Processing Certificate, with distinction, from Olds College of Agriculture and Technology in Olds, Alberta. The Dickson’s grassfed sheep are hair breeds, not wool breeds, like the lamb from New Zealand, and have an exquisite flavour. The meat is not cheap but it’s worth every penny, tender and sweet. “With hair breeds, you don’t get mutton,” said Jackie.

Our lamb delivery arrived while I was visiting family in Collingwood, Ontario, where lamburgers are a thing. A local butcher store sells pre-made patties, and every member of my Ontario family, and my best friend, had a batch in their freezer.

Inspired by memories of Greece, I introduced tzatziki and roasted eggplant to the burger fixings, one night—a brilliant move that won accolades and changed lives. So, I brought the idea home. Eggplant, tzatziki, mint, a bit of feta cheese—you’ll think you were dining at the foot of the Acropolis.

I shared a photo of a recent “lamburger” with a Whitehorse friend. Even though she herself does not eat lamb, she was so moved by the sight of delicious things piled on top of each other that she anointed the burger with the title, “Tower of Beauty.” I concur. Tip: to consume a Tower of Beauty effectively, you’ll need two hands and lots of napkins.

For information on where to find local lamb, see the Yukon Agricultural Association’s Yukon Farm Guide at yukonag.ca/yukonfarm-guide.

Homemade “Lamburger”

LAMBURGERS

Ingredients:

• 1 lb ground local lamb

• 1 clove garlic, minced

• 1/4 cup chopped, fresh mint

• 1/2 tsp salt

• 1/2 tsp freshly ground pepper

• 4 hamburger buns, Kaisers or mini ciabattas

Instructions:

1. Place ground lamb in a mediumsized bowl. Using two forks, break the lamb up a bit until no large lumps remain.

2. Add remaining ingredients and toss together with forks until thoroughly combined.

3. Form into 4 patties. Place the patties in a cold cast-iron frying pan set on a burner, and turn heat to medium. Once the burgers start to sizzle, set the timer for 4 minutes. Flip burgers and cook for another 3 minutes. If you like your cheese melted on top, place two slices on each burger, cover with a lid, turn off the heat and wait for about a minute. Cheese should be melted.

4. While the burgers are cooking, slice buns in half, place on a baking sheet and heat in a 400℉ oven.

5. When buns are lightly toasted, spread with butter.

6. Place a burger on each bun and let everyone build their own Tower of Beauty with the extras and condiments set out on the counter or table. Tip: kettlecooked potato chips are an excellent accompaniment.

Makes 4 burgers of about 4 oz each.

Extras:

• 1 large tomato, cut into thick slices

• 1/4 medium-sized purple onion, sliced

• 8 slices old cheddar or feta cheese

• Dijon mustard

• Roasted eggplant

• Tzatziki

ROASTED EGGPLANT

• 1 large eggplant

• Salt

• 2 Tbsp olive oil

Instructions:

1. Wash the eggplant well, wipe dry

PHOTO: Miche Genest

and slice into 1/4-inch rounds. Layer the eggplant in a strainer or a sieve set over a plate or bowl, sprinkling each layer with salt. Let sit for about 30 minutes. (You will see beads of moisture rise on the surface of each slice. This process of salting helps to eliminate bitter juices and speeds up the roasting process by extracting moisture.)

2. Preheat oven to 400℉. Rinse off the slices, pat them dry and place them on a large, parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush both sides of each slice generously with olive oil.

3. Roast for 15 minutes, flip slices and roast for another 15 minutes. The surface should be golden-brown, and the inside soft. Roast for another 5 or 10 minutes if necessary.

4. Remove from oven and cool to room temperature. Store extra slices in the fridge for up to 5 days. They’re great in sandwiches! Makes about 20 slices.

TZATZIKI

Ingredients:

• 1 baby English cucumber, unpeeled, or 1/4 of a large English cucumber

• 1 clove garlic, grated or minced

• 2 Tbsp olive oil

• 2 Tbsp chopped fresh mint

• 1 cup Greek yogurt

• Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Grate cucumber into a bowl using the largest holes on the grater. Gather up cucumber and place it in the center of a clean tea towel dampened with water, or a piece of cheesecloth. Squeeze cucumber over the sink until most of the juice has been extracted. Transfer to a medium-sized bowl.

2. Add garlic, oil, mint and yogurt to the bowl, and stir with a fork until thoroughly combined. Taste, and add salt and freshly ground pepper to your liking. Store in the fridge until you’re ready to use. Will keep for up to 5 days. Note: the flavour improves with time. Makes about 1 1/2 cups. n

THE WAY HOME

I was recently sitting in the Vancouver Airport waiting for my Air North flight back to Whitehorse

It’s a scene familiar to most Yukoners, I’m sure. A variety of things occasionally pull us away from the Yukon: family, travel, medical treatment, etc. Years ago, when I was studying in university, this was always the time of year when I would make my way back north at the end of the semester, like a migratory bird. Even then, in the daze of young adulthood, I was always aware that as soon as I was seated at that departure gate, I would already feel like I was home.

It’s always a relaxed scene, with familiar faces. Even if I don’t personally know anyone on the flight with me, there are almost always faces that I recognize from the grocery store or walking down Main Street. Whitehorse has a growing population estimated at more than 27,000, but sometimes it still feels like a very small town.

Whether I’ve been away for many months or just a few days, the feeling of homecoming is the same. Sometimes my travels require several other flights before the final one from YVR to YXY. Perhaps it’s the relief of having made all of my previous rushed connections (and the fact that my suitcase made it with me) that adds to my affection for the experience of flying with “Yukon’s Airline,” but I always feel that there’s something special about the final leg of the trip home.

Lifting off the tarmac in Vancouver, we’re instantly over the waters of the Salish Sea, looking towards Vancouver Island on the left, catching a glimpse of Howe Sound to the right and then heading up over the Sunshine Coast. Soon the lush green of the coastal forest makes way to the snowcovered peaks of the Coast Mountains. As the plane reaches its cruising altitude, I’m enveloped in the humming sound of the engines—just me and my thoughts.

Unlike on other flights, I usually don’t find the need to distract myself with anything during these last couple of hours. I doze off for a bit, gratefully receive my complimentary beverage and inflight snack and then go back to gazing out the window and thinking about what it means to be going home.

Not all of us who call the Yukon home were born here. Some have just recently started to build new lives here. Others have been connected to this land for many, many generations. I arrived in the Yukon for the first time when I was still in my mother’s womb, flying over these exact same snow-covered mountains. I wasn’t born here but I’ve spent the largest part of my life here. I can’t say that I feel I have the right to claim this place as my own, even after all these years (my ancestors came from a different corner of the world). But I do think that every golden spring sunset, every itchy mosquito bite and every lonely loon call brings me a little bit closer to this land. And when I drink water from the lake, shiver under the northern lights or eat a freshly caught grayling, I feel that connection growing even stronger.

Like the warm in-flight cookies or jokes exchanged with the Air North flight attendants, these things become the foundation of a relationship, a sense of famili-

arity and an intimate feeling of home. Air North has been a part of the Yukon for 46 years (many years longer than I) and, as a business, seems to have continually nurtured and grown its connection with the North over that time period.

We, as a community, are lucky to have local businesses like Air North. To me, they epitomize the northern spirit of simplicity, hospitality and resourcefulness. When, for example, other air-passenger carriers cancel their scheduled flights because of cold temperatures, Air North finds a way to get you to your destination. And when you call their customerservice number, you’re met with a willingness to accommodate your needs instead of just an impersonal, well-rehearsed response. When friends or family come to visit the Yukon for the first time, I usually suggest that they book the flight to Whitehorse with Air North. To me, it’s the first impression that they’ll have of the North, and I want it to be as positive and truly “Yukon” as possible.

As the landscapes below the orange-and-white wingtip become more familiar, I fold up my tray table and bring my seat back to its upright position. I love these last few minutes of the trip, flying between the towns of Tagish and Carcross, moving along the slopes of Mount Lansdowne and Mount Lorne, and then banking over the Yukon River and the city of Whitehorse before lining up with the runway. As the plane’s wheels screech across the ground, the last bits of tension leave my body. I’m home. n

38TH ANNUAL HELMUT GRÜNBERG YUKON BIRDATHON

It’s

Birdathon time. The Yukon Bird Club’s (YBC) annual fun and fundraising event will take place from 5 p.m. on Friday, May 26, to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 27

Over the 24 hours, participants will head outdoors, or watch from their windows, to identify as many bird species as possible.

“You don’t have to see a lot of birds—twenty or even forty is doable—but it’s a good chance to be observant and take in what’s around you,” said the Yukon Bird

Club’s Jim Hawkings.

Yukon has over 300 recorded bird species, many of them migrants that come north each spring. Trumpeter swans are early arrivals, while pretty songbirds like the yellow warbler, noisy kingfishers and giant flocks of sandhill cranes are among others we happily welcome.

Where to bird? The McIntyre Creek wetlands, off the Fish Lake Road, and the ponds in Takhini are hotspots. So are shrubby spots along the Whitehorse waterfront, from Schwatka Lake to Walmart.

“Any place around water is good,” Hawkings advised.

In the past, birdathoners have walked, paddled, biked or driven, all night, sighting up to 151 species.

But it’s not necessary to venture far

from your neighbourhood, Hawkings noted. “Just walk or bike with your family or friends to a favourite place nearby.”

There are prizes in various categories, including youngest and oldest birders, new participants, families, enviro-birders (selfpropelled) and “backyard” birders. This year may see a prize for birders using e-bikes or electric vehicles.

A potluck BBQ gathering will be held in Rotary Park afterwards.

The Yukon Birdathon was launched 38 years ago by the Yukon Conservation Society and was taken over by the YBC after its formation in 1993. It was renamed, in 2015, to honour legendary birder Helmut Grünberg, one of the club’s founders.

Gathering pledges for species seen, or donations, help to fund the club’s programs. All promote the awareness, appreciation and conservation of Yukon birds and their habitats.

And if you can’t take part yourself, consider sponsoring this year’s Feature Birder, Alex Oberg. Born and raised in Whitehorse, Oberg started birding on family camping and river trips.

A mountain chickadee, photo-captured in winter, is one species that Feature Birder Alex Oberg is keen to find during this spring’s Birdathon A lone sandhill crane was observed at the Quartz Road marsh, in Whitehorse, during last year’s birdathon. This species is usually only seen in very large flocks, in the central Yukon, during its spring migration along the Tintina Trench Birders Cameron Eckert and Kirsten Wilcox searching for an elusive shorebird species, a willet, at Lewes River Marsh during last year’s Birdathon Biologist Jim Hawkings, a longtime Yukon Bird Club board member and supporter of the Birdathon, says biking or walking in your neighbourhood or nearby with friends or family is a great way to observe birds “and take in” what’s around you PHOTO: Lena Ware PHOTO: Cameron Eckert PHOTO: Steve Wilson

38th Annual Helmut Grünberg Yukon Birdathon

Other birding hotspots include the forest and ponds along McIntyre Creek, in the Takhini area, near Yukon University

Now, he’s one of the Yukon’s top new birders and is recording sightings on the website eBird.org

The full-time chef and young father encourages new birders to just “take the plunge.”

“When I did my first birdathon, last year, I didn’t have a lot of birding experience.

“Go ahead and participate, even if you don’t know what all the birds are,’’ he said, adding: “You can start out with some familiar birds and then learn more as you go.

“An appreciation of nature and willingness to learn is all you need. And if you’ve already got a pair of binoculars, you’re well on your way.”

Oberg identified 60 species in 2022. This year, birding with his family, his goal is 70 species including the mountain chickadee.

Fledgling and experienced birders can find checklists, pledge sheets, birding tips and more at yukonbirds.ca/birdathon. Happy Birdathoning! n

REMEMBERING JAMIE SHAW

A man who changed lives …

Yukon, as well,” Jordan said. “He [Jamie] always had a love for sports. Growing up in the Yukon, we had lots of opportunity to participate in sports. He’d gone to the Arctic Winter Games for basketball, and he participated in hockey, growing up, [and in] martial arts. He was always, you know … our family was always into physical fitness—jogging, weight training—since I can remember. So he came by it naturally.

“When he went to university, he got his first degree in physical education, and from there he got his education degree and went to the U.S. for a bit, to teach. He was in Maryland, teaching at a private school there in physical education, and really developed a passion for it.”

As well as his background in physical education, Jamie possessed personal qualities that helped him relate to others on an emotional level, as well.

dealing with cancer, when he was diagnosed at such a young age.”

Shortly after Jamie passed away, Jordan moved back to the Yukon where a number of people approached him to start a foundation in Jamie’s name.

“They thought that it would be a great way to keep Jamie’s memory alive and help him to continue to help other people in the Yukon, through athletics,” Jordan explained.

through some pretty tough times in their lives.”

Jamie’s family is grateful to Sport Yukon for recognizing Jaimie’s contribution to sports in the territory and for inducting him into the Yukon Hall of Fame. The organization is also a key player in the success of the Jamie Shaw Memorial Fund.

Every one of us who goes to school or who participates in sports experiences a number of teachers and coaches along the way. Sometimes, if we’re lucky, one of these people will have a profound impact on us and maybe even set us on a new path.

Jamie Shaw was such a person.

In the years that he was the athletic director and, eventually, the vice-principal at F.H. Collins, Jamie was someone who connected with students and made a difference in their lives. He passed away from cancer in 2018 when he was just 44 years old. On May 16, Jamie will be inducted into the Yukon Sports Hall of Fame.

According to his brother, Jordan, Jamie had an early affinity for teaching and athletics.

“My grandmother was a teacher. My mom was a teacher in the

“Jamie didn’t have things come naturally for him as an athlete: he had to work hard, he had to plan and he had to work with what he had and use those attributes to become a better athlete,” Jordan explained. “He learned to be really empathetic and understanding of others, and I believe that’s why he really seemed to be able to connect with the kids. He was able to connect with them each, individually, as the people they were. It’s the natural intuition, I guess, to be able to communicate with people. He had that.

“He was not trying to build better athletes,” Jordan continued. “He was always trying to help people develop the tools to deal with life outside of athletics, and building those systems that help you deal with problems as they come up. You know, athletes get that through sport … and he tried to equate that to real life. And he applied those same systems when

“I’ve got a group of friends of Jamie’s, and colleagues of Jamie’s, who are good enough to help me identify people who they feel—and I feel—would best represent what Jamie believed in, whether it’s in terms of athletic potential, financial need, and how they plan to give back to the community. The emphasis that we have, always, is financial need. There’s lots of resources in the Yukon for athletes, and this one, for us, putting the emphasis not necessarily on ability but on the person and the likelihood that they’re going to come back and help others.”

Since returning to the Yukon, Jordan has met many young people whose lives have been changed by Jamie.

“I’ve had some really great conversations, at times really emotional conversations, about how Jamie affected their lives. He really did have a profound effect on many of the young people I’ve come into contact with. They all have different lessons that he had taught them.

“I’m always really proud of the way he would affect these young people. The comments that always really resonate with me are when a young man or young woman tells me that their life wouldn’t have turned out the way it did had it not been for the way my brother— how his belief in them and what he taught them—helped them get

“We’re extremely proud of Jamie. We always have been,” Jordan said. “[The induction is] just a great way for him to be recognized by his community, and the great people at Sport Yukon are not only super supportive of our memorial fund … they actually do a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of advertising it and getting the word out to potential candidates.

“[Sport Yukon executive director] Tracey Bilsky and her team

have just been amazing people to work with. They have a lot of respect and admiration for Jamie— the fact that they’re choosing to induct him into the Hall of Fame. It’s always sad not to have someone you love with you, but having their memory live on and having them recognized for the work they’ve put in and the effort they put in … It means a lot to me and to my family.”

People can donate to the Jamie Shaw Memorial Fund through the Jaimie Shaw Memorial Fund Facebook page, or by visiting jaimieshawmemorialfund.com or sportyukon.com. The fund is run by volunteers and 100 per cent of the donations go back into the community. n

CARPOOL KARAOKE—TODDLER EDITION

by both my husband and my son, in the car, with my darling child uncaringly proclaiming “I want Daddy’s music,” which leaves me pouting.

However, on weekday mornings, when it’s just me and my little guy in the car, he is more

my most favourite memories with him.

Just picture a two-year-old belting out “My Heart Will Go On,” swinging his little arms out for emotional emphasis, and try not to smile.

Now, this all began last sum-

on the radio. One particular melody that caught his interest was Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off,” and, boy, does my child love to shake!

I am grateful for the video I have of him enthusiastically singing and dancing along (as best he can in his car seat) with the biggest

stop, for weeks. Heck, it even worked as a magic stop button for tantrums for a while there.

Regardless of how much I desire to crawl back into bed on weekday mornings, the moment I turn on the car and pull out onto the road, my spirits are instantly lifted and I’m grinning ear to ear. And that is because my drives now include Carpool Karaoke–Toddler Edition.

What is this awesome game, you may ask?

I’ll set the stage for you. CKTE, as I will refer to it, involves going for a drive in the car with your young child (in the backseat) singing at the top of their lungs. And, because I have recently taken a stand against playing Cocomelon songs in the car (if you have a toddler, you certainly feel my pain), I now get a say in the music that we play. And I must say, it has been an absolute hoot hearing my little boy sing along to my playlist.

Admittedly, I know that I probably don’t have the best musical tastes—and my song catalogue hasn’t changed in the last 20 years. Growing up in the late ’90s and early 2000s, my go-to’s often include pop and R&B hits like “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “No Scrubs.” I’ve also been known to blast back to the ’80s and ’70s, every now and then, leaving me bopping along to the Footloose theme and ABBA. However, I often have to fight for control of the music when I’m in the car with my husband. And there have also been times where I have been outvoted

smirk on his face. It made us laugh so much that we didn’t mind his requests to have this song play continuously, over and over, non-

Bless you, Taylor! You got us through some tough times. These days, the repetitiveness is still there. And our CKTE sessions often sound the same, each morning, for weekly lengths. For example, last week it was Celine Dion and “Let It Go,” which made me certain of my son’s flair for the dramatic. I’m proud to say that he gets that from me, as I serenaded right along with him.

This week, our morning drives have begun each day with a disco request. “Disco music, please” is what I hear as I close my car door and turn on the ignition. I know what that means. It means Scroll through your playlist and get “Stayin’ Alive” going before we head out, Mom.

“Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, stayin’ alive” (if I’m being honest, that is the only part that we both really know of the song, and it has yet to lose its spark). We have a great time, and my little guy’s dance moves are on point.

I can only hope that the family road trip we have planned for this summer will result in some fantastic family singalongs and danceoffs.

Although, I’m sad to say that on our drive home yesterday evening, I learned that the old adage of musical groups inevitably breaking up appears to be true. My son and I have performed many an astounding duet on our daily drives, but just as I began to join in with him, doing my best Bee Gees impression, I was a little heartbroken when I was interrupted by “I don’t want Mommy to sing. Just me.”

I guess he’s pursuing a solo career now. n

Bridgeen Barber

Skills Yukon Affiliation: 2022 Territorial and National Skills Competition Competitor for Team Yukon

Age: 31

Trade & Certifications: Red Seal Cook Current workplace: Whitehorse Emergency Centre

until several years later. I worked as a youth worker for the Boys and Girls Club of Yukon, for some of that time, and the food programs there were a way I gained a lot of experience and honed my skills. It was also where I learned how much I love cooking for people. Food always brings people together.

How did you decide on the trade you’re in?

When I realized my work experience outside the industry was still very food involved like at the BGC I figured I should probably give it a go! I was always drawn to cooking.

trade to get into because everybody needs to eat! I love sharing my skills with my friends and family, and they love it too!

Was there anything that you found intimidating about your job before you started? If so, how did you overcome that?

I guess it’s always intimidating entering a new kitchen. Every kitchen has a different rhythm because of the people working there and the routines and demands of the business or organization. I think being open to learning and asking questions has helped a lot with that transition.

apprenticeship should only take about three years, normally, but I didn’t get there in the most-linear fashion.

Do you have any plans to continue further education?

If we’re talking about throughout my whole lifetime I would love to continue to study a variety of things. I am currently doing some upgrading at Yukon University to potentially enter into a degree in nutrition, but I am also very interested in becoming a Red Seal Baker one day!

Where do you see your career in 5, 10, 15 years?

What do you find the most challenging in your trade?

Well, I am very lucky to have had great opportunities in my trade but one unfortunate downside to cooking is that it doesn’t always pay the best and it’s hard on your body. It is a labour-of-love kind of job.

Was there someone who got you excited about this path?

It’s hard to answer this! Lots of people inspired me to cook growing up namely my mom, my Omi and my Aunt Kathleen. Watching them cook and eventually being invited to help was always the highlight of family get-togethers.

Was competing in the Territorial & National Skills Competition in 2022 a benefit to your career?

Yes it absolutely was. I got to utilize the skills I learned in culinary school that I don’t always get to use on the job. It was really exciting. Also the competition aspect of it was pretty neat. I felt like I was on a cooking show! It was an

empowering and humbling experience. Also I got to take home a set of pots and pans from Meyer, after the competition was over, which I was stoked about. I only had old hand-me-down pots in my home kitchen before.

If you could restart your apprenticeship and career in the trade, is there anything you would do differently?

I think I might have started it sooner and done the apprenticeship the whole way through. I completed one year of culinary school at Yukon University in 2016 and had been working in the industry on and off, previous to that, so I knew I liked cooking. I continued to work in the industry after that but didn’t finish my seal until 2022. I didn’t really know what I wanted along the way and I liked working different cooking jobs to gain experience. Looking back I would have liked to get the apprenticeship out of the way first and then travel and explore the trade after.

What were the first steps you took in the trade?

I started working at a fast-food salad bar in Toronto when I was 17. I learned I liked working with my hands and that it was fun creating new food combinations with the ingredients on hand. That kinda sparked the idea of working as a cook, as a career choice, but I didn’t start culinary school

Were you eligible for any grants or incentives for doing an apprenticeship in the Yukon?

Yes. The Yukon apprenticeship program is amazing. Since there isn’t anywhere in the Yukon to complete your second- and thirdyear apprenticeship training periods for becoming a Red Seal Cook they offer to send you to do them at either NAIT or SAIT in Alberta. I was able to complete my 3rd year training period at SAIT with the help of the Yukon government. All I had to cover was my accommodation expenses while I was there, but there was some funding for living expenses provided too.

How has your trade made your life better?

I always say it’s a worthwhile

Is there something about your trade that you think not many people know?

Kitchen people are pretty unique. I guess all trades might say that about their own, but it really is true about cooks. I have a kinship with anyone who works in the service industry, usually, because of our shared experiences. I know most line cooks have eaten their meal over a garbage can once or twice. Most servers will groan at the idea of “marrying the ketchups.” Culinary industry people are some of the hardest-working individuals I know.

How long did it take you to reach your current certification?

I started in 2015 and completed my Red Seal in 2022. A culinary

This is a big question! I have a lot of dreams over the next several years. Here’s a few: expanding the food programs at my current workplace, getting more baking experience, opening a small food business, getting a degree in nutrition or something in the health or social work field … I’m still figuring it all out.

What piece of advice would you offer someone who’s looking to be a chef?

Make sure you love cooking and not just as a hobby. It’s a tough job at times, and it can be physically and mentally challenging. Make sure to take care of your wellness and to put yourself first, despite the demands of the job. A good employer will support their employees to do that. n

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem.

The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive.

SPRING RENOS FOR SENIORS

The Yukon government’s Home Repair Program allows for accessibility repairs to one’s home

Have you ever taken on DIY (do it yourself) bathroom renovations in your home? We did. We were younger and ignorant of the domino effects of renovations. It started with plans to replace a bathroom window and grew into a new design for the whole bathroom, and an additional bathroom downstairs because the original bathroom was taking too long to finish. Never again, we vowed.

As we grew older, we learned that falls account for more than half of all seniors’ injuries requiring hospitalization.

These falls most commonly occur in bathrooms and on stairs. We don’t have any stairs in the house, but our bathroom is overdue for renovations to make it safer and more accessible. My husband and I have arthritis and find it hard to get in and out of the claw-foot bathtub that stands about two-feet high. The clawfoot tub also sits on a raised platform about four inches off the main floor. Thankfully, we have managed not to fall off the platform while vacating the tub. We maintain our balance by holding onto the wall or the sink nearby. We also find it difficult to balance on one foot to scrub our feet while showering in the bathtub.

All of these factors we have lived through, so far, but we began to recognize that we needed to make some changes. Thankfully, the Yukon government has a Home Repair Program that allows for accessibility repairs to one’s home. This is a non-repayable grant of up to $30,000 for approved homeowners to retrofit their homes if they have mobility challenges.

The applications closed in February, for this year, but this is something to research and plan for in the next building year. The program is a great resource but could be improved by providing homeowners with information on accessibility features and on how to talk to contractors about what is appropriate for your needs.

Our bathroom is very small, so it was difficult to make all of the changes to make it fully accessible

Dog Culture

WH TSUP

START EARLY

We applied for our grant in winter 2022 and heard back in the spring of 2023. Given our previous DIY experience, we decided to renovate using a professional this time. Unfortunately, we had a great deal of difficulty finding a contractor to do the work and had to delay our renovations to start in late spring of 2023.

The first contractor that we had scheduled to do the work pulled out in early January because he had a bigger commercial contract and we were left to find another available person.

If you are looking to do something similar, my advice is to start early to locate potential contractors—ask friends, check listings and, if possible, see examples of their work.

RESEARCH AND PLAN

We contacted an occupational therapist from Home Care to do an assessment of our home, to look for tripping hazards and to provide fall-prevention ideas for the bathroom. She gave us resources on accessible design for bathrooms. Check out Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (cmhc.ca) for the article “Accessible Housing by Design.” There’s a great section on bathrooms.

Our bathroom is very small, so it was difficult to make all of the changes to make it fully accessible, but we are pleased with the proposed changes. We will be able to have a walk-in shower, a handheld shower sprayer, a fold-down stool in the shower, grab bars, a higher toilet, a vanity with easyto-access storage, single-lever faucets, better lighting and new flooring.

KNOW ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY

Before you talk to a contractor, my other advice is to have a clear plan for the changes you want.

There’s no guarantee that contractors have detailed (or any) knowledge about accessible design. Take the information from CMHC and discuss the elements you want.

We not only did a detailed floor plan of the existing bathroom, but we also sent the contractor photos of the existing bathroom and gave him an idea of what we wanted. We paid an initial fee for the contractor to provide the plan and do a detailed quote for the total costs.

MAKE YOUR VIEWS KNOWN AND STAY FOCUSED

The contractor came to our home and did measurements. We discussed the possibilities. We exchanged plans, drawn to scale, for the proposed new plan, and we debated the pros and cons of different layouts. At times, we had to be insistent on what we wanted. When we finalized the layout, we went to the contractor’s business to discuss specific features. One detail that I insisted upon was drawer pulls (for the vanity) that I could handle with my arthritic fingers. We had to determine where we wanted the grab bars, as well as the length and placement on the wall. Flooring in the shower and throughout the bathroom had to be non-slippery.

My eyes began to gloss over with the choice of tiles, flooring, fixtures and other items, but it was important to stay focused on the accessibility aspects. One can easily spend a lot of time considering aesthetic appeal and forget about accessibility. Lots of choices at various price points … but I wanted to keep it simple, easy to clean, safe and accessible.

Hopefully I will have my wish come true by the beginning of July! (Anybody want to buy a claw-foot bathtub?) n

Victoria Gold is very pleased to once again support the Victoria Gold Klondike Gold Ru Virtual Run to benefit the Humane Society Yukon and animal welfare throughout the territory.

This virtual event – which can be completed over four days from May 19 to 22 – is a 5 km, 10 km or half marathon run or walk anywhere and on any surface. The Society encourages Yukoners’ furry, four-legged friends to take part as well.

This is the third consecutive year Victoria Gold has served as the event’s title sponsor.

The Company has registered a team with participants from throughout Victoria Gold’s operations; including employees at the Eagle Gold Mine, who are geared up and ready to challenge other corporate teams to some friendly competition.
