Commodity Wildcard: What Is Happening in China? June 17, 2015

The Chinese government is well aware of the risk and has taken action. The Central Bank has lowered interest rates three times and it has twice reduced the

2005

The big question is China’s real estate. Property prices in 70 Chinese cities have fallen for more than a year, and 60 million empty apartments await buyers.

Demand Growth for Oil 18% 16% 14% 12% 10% 8% 6% 4% 2% 0% 2004

Why all this guessing? China’s growth numbers are always suspiciously consistent and always within 0.2% of the government forecast. Moreover, skeptical analysts see hard data, such as industrial production, energy consumption and construction, which are much weaker than GDP, and are using it to create their own estimates of what is going on. But it’s not just the data that is worrying.

What does it all mean for commodity prices? The following graph shows China’s demand growth for oil, which has been massively volatile, oscillating from 16% growth to 2%. And that was during times of smooth sailing. We believe commodity prices should improve in 2015, but producers should brace themselves for more volatility as the world’s biggest consumer of natural resources has a bumpy road ahead.

2003

China’s economic growth is definitely slowing, but the real concern is that official estimates of China’s GDP growth are overestimated. Economists are scratching their heads and coming up with widely varying estimates: China GDP Growth in Q1 2015 Source Estimate China’s Official Govt. Statistics Bureau 7.0% Citibank 6.0% Capital Economics 4.9% Conference Board China Centre 4.0% Lombard Street Research 3.8%

The challenge is that China is trying to shift the focus of its economy away from exports towards domestic growth, all while gently deflating a housing bubble. China has lots of resources, $4 trillion of reserves and its tight control of the banking sector gives it policy levers that other governments could only dream of. The Chinese government can intervene to stimulate demand, but China’s economy will grow a slower pace.

2002

Last year, China consumed more coal than the rest of the world combined and imported 70% of the world’s seaborne iron ore. In 2012, China accounted for half of the global growth in oil demand. It’s a commodity behemoth and the recent slow-down in the Chinese economy is a big reason for weakness in prices for this sector. Should we be worried?

amount of reserves that banks must hold, while easing mortgage rules. Still, new construction starts have fallen 16% in the first five months of 2015, a significant hit to the economy.

2001

When someone asks where commodity prices are headed, they’re really asking: what’s the outlook for China?

Are you a small business in the food industry? If so, we want to hear from you! Once in force, the Safe Food for Canadians Act will strengthen food safety rules. This new law will focus on prevention and your ability to quickly respond to food safety issues when they arise. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is holding a targeted consultation to better understand your food safety challenges and to seek feedback on options that could reduce burdens on your business.

Key food safety elements To improve the approach to food safety in Canada, we’re considering enhancements based on three key features of international food safety systems:

1. Identifying food businesses — to know who is involved in preparing and importing food and what they are producing or bringing into the country, and communicate directly with these businesses to share important information.

2. Tracing a food product’s path one step forward and one step back — to reduce the time it takes to remove unsafe products from the market.

3. Implementing preventive food safety controls — to make sure all businesses that prepare or import food understand and control the potential hazards associated with their products and processes.

Get involved For the purpose of this consultation, small businesses are defined as those that generate $100,000 or less per year in gross sales of food. If you’re a small business in the food industry, go to inspection.gc.ca/safefood to: ü Learn more about what these proposed changes mean for your business. ü Complete the online questionnaire on options for reducing the burden on small businesses. ü Register for a webinar. ü Register to attend one of our face-to-face sessions in a city near you. Don’t miss out. Have your say before June 30, 2015!

Setting goals and accomplishing them is the final element of the PERMA framework for a flourishing life. Setting goals keeps us oriented to the future and moving forward. Goals can be big or small, the accomplishments momentous (like running a marathon) or unremarkable (like playing a new game), or anything in between. Accomplishment is mainly about skill and effort, both of which can be learned. Of course "natural" talent may contribute to some accomplishments, but it's only a starting point. Success is as much about effort, practice, persistence, and passion as it is about talent and brains. If you are looking to make a change, here are some tips for success: • • • • • • • •

Develop SMART goals -- specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-sensitive. Start small by breaking the goal into small steps or habits. Expect and prepare for failure -- anticipate challenging situations and plan your response in advance. Arrange your world to make it easier to do the new behaviour (e.g. keep a pair of comfortable shoes at work for lunch-time walks) Enlist the support and assistance of friends and family. Track your progress. Celebrate small successes. Be open to revising and revamping your plan.
