Shout Out To A Local Business! Its time to recognize the great work being done in our community!

Company: Jon Belanger Contracting Inc. We recently contracted Jon Belanger Contracting to replace our 25-year old “epic” roof. The process was seamless from initial contact to final completion. Jon and his crew were up against a “few” Mother Nature’s delays but he was always very communicative with us as well as extremely diligent to ensure our roof replacement was not compromised during the down pours. His pricing was very fair, timeline was right in line, his work from start to finish was meticulous and the end result was awesome. Very happy with this experience and proud to have a contractor like Jon working in our Territory! Dan & Donna Moore Contact: Jon Belanger 334-5953 If you’ve had a great experience with a local business and feel that they deserve to be recognized for their work…please submit a brief letter describing your experience and they may be featured in one of our upcoming E-bulletin issues! Please submit your letter to business@whitehorsechamber.ca and keep in mind that your name will be published along with your letter.

Seizing Six Opportunities for More Clarity in the Duty to Consult and Accommodate Process Today we released a report entitled, Seizing Six Opportunities for More Clarity in the Duty to Consult and Accommodate Process. The Crown has a constitutional duty to consult with and accommodate Indigenous peoples when proposed projects and developments could affect their constitutionally-protected rights. Governments often delegate the procedural aspects to industry, usually by incorporating consultation into the regulatory process. This is most often seen as a desirable and productive way to establish direct contact between industry and affected communities. However, businesses often experience confusion that causes uncertainty and delay for project proponents and Indigenous communities. This lack of clarity can lead not only to the delay or cancellation of private sector projects, but to companies abandoning them altogether. The opaque approach of the Crown to the execution of its duty to consult and accommodate is unacceptable, unfair and potentially harmful to all concerned: business, Indigenous peoples and the Crown itself. A clear, consistent framework, built within a respectful and productive relationship with Indigenous peoples, is necessary. Our report outlines six opportunities for the Crown to improve its duty to consult and accommodate process and improve relationships amongst businesses, Indigenous communities and government. Focus on what's strong, not what's wrong It seems we are wired for the negaAve. Human beings all-too-oRen focus on weaknesses and areas for improvement* rather than areas of strength. Science however is urging us to shiR our focus from what’s wrong, to what’s strong. Enter Character Strengths, developed by psychologists Christopher Peterson and MarAn Seligman. Not to be confused with talent or skills, character strengths are who we are at the core. They are authenAc, energizing, and lead to our best performance in all areas of life.
