Yukon Association for Community Living Employment Program Blooms with Partnership from The Whitehorse Chamber and Skookum Jim Friendship Centre Every summer for the past 3 years the Yukon Association for Community Living (YACL) has partnered with the Chamber and Skookum Jim to maintain the downtown flower boxes. The Chamber hires two young people who water, weed and replant the Chamber planter boxes throughout the summer with the support of a job coach from YACL. These supports are funded through a national initiative called Ready Willing & Able (RWA) to help people with intellectual barriers obtain and maintain employment by providing individual supports. Ready, Willing and Able is an innovative national program built on the principle of real work for real pay. To date, the RWA team in the Yukon has partnered with many of the existing employment resources such as Challenge, the Yukon College and Kwanlin Dunn and helped to create more than 80 new employment opportunities in Whitehorse and area. Many of the job-seekers, some previously deemed as unemployable, have now graduated away from the support of their job coach and are now included alongside their peers and fully accommodated in the routine running of the businesses and organizations that hired them. Tammy Devlin, store manager at Shoppers Drug Mart on Main street has been working with RWA for 3 years. She believes the Ready, Willing and Able Program has been a privilege for the team. “The hiring and onboarding was no different than any other employee hire. There was no judgement or changes to our hiring practices. The RWA employee is just like any other employee. There will always be challenges in the workplace when you have a multitude of different personalities. I think that it's all how you approach the situation. I would highly encourage any other workplace to give the RWA program a try. We are changing their lives and they are changing ours. Everyone deserves a chance. We will continue to work alongside with YACL and be an active employer with RWA. I love this program and can't quite say enough good words about it. Tammy Devlin, August 2017 Funded by the Government of Canada and active in 20 communities across the country, RWA is a national partnership of the Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL), the Canadian Autism Spectrum Disorders Alliance (CASDA) and their member organizations. If you are interested in inclusive hiring in your business, please contact Shonagh McCrindle, Employment Program Coordinator at YACL 867667-4606 or rwa@ycommunityliving.com.

Shākāt Journal: The Change Project Survey The Youth of Today Society, based in Whitehorse, Yukon, is developing a Millennial publication (both online and print) to support the expression of Yukon Millennials voices' on issues that matter to them. The publication, Shākāt Journal: The Change Project, will come in the form of a twice yearly print magazine (winter and summer editions), and an e-magazine/website that will roll over with new content quarterly. Online content will use photo, audio and video formats to engage viewers about our stories. Relevant multi-media training will allow Millennials to present their voice in a digital and print medium. The ultimate goal of this project is to provide the means for our young people to thrive alongside the digital economy, despite their current station in life. We believe that through art and media education we can help high-risk Northern youth by giving them the tools to express themselves in healthy and productive ways. This will be done through the ongoing production of the Shākāt Journal. By sharing the stories written by young people from around the territory, the Journal will communicate the unique experiences they face. It will share aspects of Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures, which can ultimately result in understanding and respect. By breaking the cycle of hopelessness, unemployment and racism many youth face, Shākāt Journal will stand as the youth support Yukon needs. By providing relevant multi-media training and skills development, Shākāt will provide a portal that serves a positive social need. We are conducting a survey to help reveal our supporters so that we may better serve your needs and expectations. This survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. Your responses will help us design a publication that is sustainable, long term. It's also a chance for Yukon millennials to make positive impacts on northern life. Yukoners are a sharing and caring society and we are confident you see the value of helping northern Millennials to succeed. https://decaljunkies.wufoo.eu/forms/x173h6oj0czu5dh/ Thank you for your support.
