The Atlin Whisper “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world. Margaret Mead

Hello Everyone, Atlin RCMP want to give a huge thank you and shout out to our local Atlin Search and Rescue Team (SAR), who have been called upon five times in recent weeks to assist with reports of overdue persons. These awesome folks are your Relatives, Friends, Neighbors, First Responders, Atlin Business Owners/ Employees, etc. Many also volunteer their time as Volunteer Fire Fighters and other Community Organizations. The Atlin SAR Team give up many hours of their own time for training as well with their family and friends when the call is sent out requiring their assistance with an incident in progress. Atlin is very lucky to have a highly trained Search and Rescue Team that is locally based. Many communities are without any type of SAR Team and are at the mercy of awaiting help that can be hours away before even starting to process of a rescue. Atlin RCMP is grateful to have access to such a great team of people when their training and specialized services are required. The area surrounding Atlin is vast and remote. People need to keep in mind that help can be hours away depending on your location and/or equipment required by Search and Rescue to reach you. One never expects to get into trouble outdoors. However; all it takes is a turn in the weather, mistake in judgment, unexpected injury, equipment failure, or sudden nightfall to quickly change any recreational outing into a crisis Here are few tips and reminders for you so you can be prepared and safe when travelling out to the fantastic but dangerous areas we live in.

Trip Essentials Flashlight, spare batteries and bulb Fire starting kit – waterproof matches/lighter, fire starter/candle Signaling device – whistle or mirror to signal searchers if you become lost Extra food and water – 1 litre/person Extra clothing (protection from the elements, rain, wind, cold) Navigational/Communication Aids (maps, compass, GPS, InReach/Spot Device, hand held radio) First Aid Kit and know how to use it Emergency shelter – (Tarp, parachute cord) Knife/Axe Sun protection (glasses, sunscreen, hat) •

Be Physically Prepared – Being fit enough to go the distance takes physical preparation. If you are out of breath when you walk up your staircase at home, maybe you are not ready to hike Atlin Mountain quite yet. Be honest with yourself. Start small and continue your exercise routine to prepare for a more challenging hike. Would you expect to run and complete a full marathon after jogging a few times around town? Do you have an existing medical condition than strenuous activity can affect, putting you at risk? Stick to your turnaround time (a general rule of thumb is to allow 1/3 of your time for the trip in, and 2/3 for the return trip). Never Go Alone – Always travel with a friend or group. Stay within sight of one another and designate a time and place to meet in case someone becomes separated. Travel together and stay together. Travel at the speed of the slowest person; if a person separates from the group by going ahead or falling behind, they are more likely to become lost. Complete a Trip Plan (Leave it with someone or your local Police) – The trip plan explains your destination, your route, who is in the group and your expected time of return. If you do not return as planned, the relative or friend you left your trip plan with can provide the information to the Police and Search and Rescue to initiate a search. Trip plans are available here at the Atlin Detachment as well as many different versions online. Take five minutes and fill out a trip plan. This piece of paper can save your life as it contains vital information for responders should you require assistance. Learn To Navigate – Buy a compass, GPS or learn to read a map. As you are out exercising for your trip, take the GPS with you and learn to use it before your adventure. As you travel through the wilderness, pay attention to your surroundings, note landmarks, and periodically look back the way you came. Be aware of the distance you have traveled and the time. Reassess your destination plans throughout the day. Stay Where You are – Stop as soon as it is apparent that you have become separated from your group, lost or in trouble. Do not panic. Remain calm as you will be able to think more clearly. People who carry on after becoming lost usually get further from roads and trails, and further from people who are looking for them. Stay Sober – Alcohol and drugs affect clear thinking, coordination and reaction time. Use Signaling Devices – Blowing a whistle, lighting a fire and staying visible will help searchers find you. Three whistle blasts, three fires, or three gunshots – is an internationally recognized distress signal Build or Seek Shelter – Protect yourself from the snow, rain, wind, and excessive sun. It may take hours to build shelter and collect fuel wood, so do it early while you still have energy. It is important to be as comfortable as possible, but when it is daylight, make sure you are visible to searchers in helicopters or other aircraft. We wish everyone a safe and fun summer. It’s been a challenging year so far with the Covid Pandemic. Now that summer has arrived, keep your distance, get outside and enjoy what the Atlin area offers.
