Atlin School Enjoys Success at Whitehorse High School Track and Field Day Wednesday, June 1, 2022, Atlin School entered and participated in the Whitehorse High School Track and Field running events. Prior to the competition, coach Bart de Haas helped prepare the high school class with running skills development during gym class (with Ms. M). From this group, four students participated in the afterschool running practices: Gr. 8 Hunter Hanslit, Gr. 10 Luke Wesley and Jarin Tizya, and Gr. 11 Izaiah Carlick. Following weeks of preparation, Hunter Hanslit ran first in the 100 m qualifier, finished second in the 400 m run final and third in the 100 m final (Gr. 8 Boys). Luke Wesley finished first in 100 m qualifier, first in 400 m run final, and first in 100 m final in Junior Boys (Gr. 9 and 10) (a very close race – officials needed to refer to the video to determine the winner!). Luke also joined a group of runners to compete in the 4 x 100 m relay and the group placed fourth. The school plans to continue developing the running team in the next school year with hopes of expanding the age group range to include some of the elementary grades. Initial hopes include organizing a high school cross country run in the fall, inviting the southern Yukon high school athletes. Stay tuned.

Hunter Hanslit finishing 3rd in 100 m Gr. 8 Boys final - Luke Wesley finishing 1st in 100 m Junior Boys final.

THE TARAHNE TEA’S 3OTH, ANNIVERSARY JULY 2ND

After a two-year hiatus the Tarahne Tea resumed with a roaring success as people happily gathered to celebrate 30 years. Almost $3000 was raised for the Historical Society, between ticket sales and the popular game of toss the dice. Thank you to everyone who donated food, served, set up, cleaned up and helped with food prep. Thanks to Bob and Wayne our dapper gamblers for the event. Special thanks to Judy Currelly and her team for the beautiful flower arrangements, as well as to those who donated the flowers. Prizes were donated by Dick Fast, Magpie, Susie and Jerry Kuelbs and were much appreciated. Thanks to everyone who helped with the organization of this wonderful event. We look forward to seeing everyone back again next year!

The Lucky Gamblers! 1st Place: Necklace: Christina Mattson (Karen Lincoln’s granddaughter). 2nd Place: Big Bowl from Dr. Fast: Helen Smith 3rd Place: Small Bowl from Dr. Fast: Nicole Liebe (Pat Logan’s daughter-in-law). 4th Place: Print: Kelly Liebe (Pat Logan’s daughter).

Brandon Isaak Wednesday July 13, 2022 This guy lives and breathes the blues. Brandon Isaak is an authentic, heart felt roots and blues songster who always delivers the goods. Be it as his one-man band, his dynamic duo, his hard-hitting trio or even his five piece Saints of Swing all-star group. You always get 100% of this artist. Born in Whitehorse,Yukon to a family who had always been in the music business. His folks owed a couple of blues clubs. His father, Ed Isaak, is a full-time musician and has been his whole life. Young Isaak grew up in an electric atmosphere and backed up many blues masters who would take up a three week residency in his family’s clubs. This is where he learned his chops and cut his teeth. Brandon is an award-winning musician with a passion and a thirst for the history of music and origins of the blues, and it shows in his live shows. He is an entertainer as well as a gifted musician. “Entertaining an audience and making a connection with them is as important as great music and lyrics”. So many artists today just sit and play and don’t connect with their audiences. Now with a brand new record released in July 2021; Brandon has been busy this year touring and promoting his newest album. https://www.brandonisaak.ca

Come join us at Como Lake for a day of draw prizes, handouts, BBQ, special guests and of course fishing! Will be setting up at 10:00am. Everyone welcome, bring a rod! Please contact Brandon.Beck@gov.bc.ca for questions or if you would like to contribute in any way! Fish Fact: Como Lake was last stocked on June 25, 2019. The lake received 4,000 female triploid Rainbow Trout (Blackwater River strain). Triploid rainbow trout are named triploid because they possess three sets of chromosomes which render them sterile. Since they do not spawn, all their growth potential goes to body size as opposed to producing eggs or milt. For more stocking or fishing information please visit https://www.gofishbc.com/

ON THE ROAD II Alaska Hwy.Enroute-Ft Nelson. The road stretched ahead like a curved white ribbon. I kept my eyes peeled for the faint line that marked the edge of the road’s shoulder. Catching a wheel in an unplowed shoulder and following it into the ditch is as predictable as a cracked windshield in this part of the world. My personal ditch debut took place hours after my arrival in Atlin in the winter of 1980. — Atlin,1980. Part of the agreement with the government when you stake land, is that you will take up permanent residence within a given period after construction. My window of opportunity for residency had narrowed to … well … NOW. Never mind that it was January in the North; never mind that it was 30 below with a wind; and never mind that I had no northern gear - time was up. Fortunately, on arrival, my friend Dave Stecker, flatpicker and mandolin player in my Ozone Ranger family, took pity on me and rooted out some vintage clothing to tide me over: An old pair of pack boots; a couple of pairs of long underwear that looked like they were from the turn of the century; some mitts patched with duct tape, and an old army surplus parka that had a trim on the hood made of pure fox … a pure fox with the mange from the looks of it. I was visiting Dave for the first time in the cabin he had rented for the winter. When I walked in, I found him pre-occupied. He was busily peering through a crack in the oven door of a big old wood stove chugging in the corner. He was obviously roasting something or other, and it was taking all his attention, so I took the opportunity to look around the joint. The place was as cute as a button. My eyes scanned the room, lighting on the little sofa with its colourful knitted cover. His guitar was propped against one of two red pillows gracing each end, that favourite tortoise shell pick of his stuck in the strings. An old style maple rocking chair stood against the back wall with one of those homemade crocheted pillows covering the seat, the type with the sewed-on tabs designed to wrap around the dowels of the arms in a vain attempt to keep it stationary. It cradled his mandolin, and I was about to walk over and pick it up when a delicious aroma wafted across the cabin and set my nostrils twitching. “My oh my, what is that delicious smell Stecks?” I asked. “That sir, is the smell of heaven,” he replied, looking up and grinning.

He reached down and swung open the oven door like he was presenting a prize on the Price is Right. And there they sat - like bronzed bathers on a beach - rack upon rack of freshly made moose jerky, marinated, peppered and sizzling in the sun. He gingerly pulled out a rack with an oven mitt that looked suspiciously like an old boot liner, then, slapping it down on the stove surface, he grabbed a strip and jammed it in his mouth. He chewed, thoughtfully at first. Then his eyes glazed and rolled back in his head. He hopped. He twirled. He chortled. I started to laugh. “Man oh man … these are delicious,” he said. “Here, try one.” He tossed me a strip, lost his balance, did a header over the pack boots drying by the stove, and managed to wedge himself between the wood box and the wall. By now I was bent over with laughter. Dave joined in, huffing and puffing as he tried to pull himself out of his cramped position. Finally, wiping tears from his eyes, he managed to pick himself up and brush himself off. “Well there it is,” he wheezed. “Now, if only we had a cold beer.” He raised those Groucho Marx eyebrows a notch, reached behind the couch (the perfect natural cooler) and pulled out a pair of Molson’s Old Style. We sat with our jerky and beer, elbows on the kitchen table, gazing out through the frost rimmed window onto a feathered wonderland of pines and spruces, and watching the light play off the billions of snow crystals that coated every surface. “Boy, this jerky’s salty.” “Sure is.” “You sure do run through a lot of beer eating jerky.” “Yeah, well, I think that’s why they invented it.” “Beer?” “No, jerky. I think they wanted to sell more beer.” “Well, it’s working. Still, it’s a bit of a chicken and egg thing.”

“Hmmph. Yeah, I suppose.” “A tune?”, Dave said, grabbing his mandolin. “Where’s your guitar?” And so it went. All in all, the perfect afternoon … until I borrowed the truck, caught a wheel in the unplowed shoulder and put it in the ditch. — Alaska Hwy.Enroute-Ft Nelson. ‘Whoah Nellie!.’ I came close to spinning the steering wheel - the dumbest thing I could have done at that moment. I was back on the highway to Fort Nelson and the shit was hitting the fan. Swimming in my snowy shoulder reveries, my attention had drifted and I suddenly found myself travelling at highway speed with my right front wheel buried in the soft shoulder, and the rear wheel following suite. I was one step away from being sucked into the ditch - the exact predicament I was musing over seconds before. I tapped the brakes ever so lightly and the car gradually slowed, thankfully keeping a straight line and avoiding being drawn down the bank - a fate that could range from the mild embarrassment of having to be towed out, to the dangerous possibility of turning over and disappearing into the toolies. Finally the car came to a halt, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Putting it in reverse, I gingerly backed out, following my tracks as best I could. This is where a little weight and front wheel drive comes in handy. Once out, I stopped for a minute to locate my thermos of coffee. I wasn’t about to let this happen again. I was going to stay awake and that was that. I was just about to lift the steaming cup to my lips when my guardian angel, saviour of life and limb, piped up in that exasperated voice of his. I knew it was coming, but no matter how many times … “You know, I really don’t have time for this crap. You’re not the only one I have to look out for. I seem to spend half my day saving your sorry ass from this or that, when there are far more worthy causes out there, folks in need who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in a pickle - folks who express gratitude for my services and … “ “Okay, okay. I’ll do better,” I grunted. I returned my entire attention to the road ahead.
