Hello Everyone, March is Seatbelt Safety Month. Wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective way to reduce the chance of injury or death while in a motor vehicle collision, yet many still don’t buckle up. Worst of all, impressionable kids learn from our actions and if you don’t wear a seat belt they’re likely to think it’s safe to throw their own seat belt safety out the window. Check Stops will be held throughout the month of March as part of an enhanced effort to ensure compliance with all drivers and passengers to wear their seatbelts. Check Stops will be set up at various locations in Atlin and Officers will also be conducting mobile enforcement. Officers will be looking for seatbelt compliance as well as observing that the seatbelt is worn properly. Drivers are responsible to ensure anyone under 16 years of age are properly wearing their seatbelt. Drivers and passengers found to be in violation of the BC Motor Vehicle Act could be face a fine of $167 for each infraction. Some points to remember: • •

• • • •

Seatbelts must be in proper working condition A seatbelt won’t protect you if it is not worn properly. Take a few moments to position the lap portion of your seatbelt snug to your body and low on the hips. Never wear the shoulder strap under the arm because it could damage your ribs. During pregnancy, women should wear the lap belt snug and low over the pelvic bones (below the baby) and the shoulder belt snug against the chest. The baby will be safer if the mother is protected in a crash. A seatbelt keeps the driver behind the wheel and in control in a collision. It helps to keep your head and body from hitting the inside of the vehicle. A seatbelt keeps you inside the vehicle during a collision, rather than potentially being thrown through a windshield or door onto the roadway Unbelted passengers can potentially kill other vehicle occupants on impact. Studies show that drivers and front-seat passengers are at a five times greater risk of dying in a car crash if the rear passengers are not wearing seatbelts

Child car seat safety tips: • • • •

Buckle up all children, 12 and younger, in the back seat in an age/weight appropriate restraint system Never place a rear-facing infant restraint in a passenger seat that has an active airbag Never carry a child in your arms while riding in a motor vehicle Never restrain two children in one seatbelt
