BANDS - (Part 1) Roving Minstrels of the North, South, East and West By Paul Lucas Cantung NWT,1981. We climbed out of Hilary and Ilene’s three-quarter ton crew cab, stiff and weary, with a couple of hours of work still ahead of us. It’s a long haul from Atlin to Cantung. Longer in the winter. This company town was built and operated by Canada Tungsten, and like many of these towns, it was a self contained hive of activity with a seemingly unlimited budget - great places to play if you wanted to be treated like royalty. The cook shack alone boggled the mind. Practically anything you wanted was there. ‘A rib eye steak for breakfast, sir? … coming right up.’ And the entertainment, apart from the occasional stripper and itinerant band like ourselves, was high tech. These were the early days of computers and HBO, and the mining camps had it all. Over half of our gigs were in these camps - Elsa, Faro, McMillan Pass, Cantung, Ericson, Cassiar - and the other half were in the towns that supported them. The Yukon is all about mining. We dragged our frozen equipment out of the truck and into the ‘Club Lounge’ to let everything thaw out. I stopped for a minute to look at the scene. It was one that every musician knows - amps and keyboards being hauled across the stage, drums being set up along with mic stands and monitors, and the endless unfurling of cables of one sort or another. Musicians don’t really get paid to play, they get paid to travel and set up. Still, I didn’t hear any complaining. After all, being able to make a living strumming a board with strings on it was some sort victory as far as I was concerned, and I’m sure everybody felt the same. Bands are families, but unlike blood families, they are made up of like minded individuals who choose to be together. If the connections are strong enough, your band members can seem like blood. There is something about striving together towards the same goal, something in the shared passion, and something in the willingness to accept each others strengths and weaknesses with equanimity, that forms the bond between musicians - a bond that is rare other than in sports and the military.
