Hello Everyone, Atlin RCMP would like to invite you all on December 4th between 3:30 and 4:30 to attend the Atlin RCMP Detachment (180 3rd St) as we will once again be lighting and decorating a holiday tree in the front of the Detachment. We will have hot chocolate and some treats. Please feel free to bring a decoration for the tree. It can be something you have made yourself or decorations you do not need anymore. The more on the tree the better it will look. If you are unable to attend this day, feel free to add decorations to the tree any time. The season for the annual Holiday Check Stop campaign is fast approaching! Check Stops will be held throughout the month of November, December and into the New Year as part of an enhanced effort to get impaired drivers off the road. Check Stops will be set up at various locations in Atlin and officers will also be conducting mobile enforcement. The primary goal of the Check Stop program is to locate and apprehend impaired drivers due to the significant risk to public safety they pose, but police will also be checking for valid documentation including driver’s licenses, vehicle registration and insurance as well as equipment, liquor and other violations. Atlin RCMP are reminding motorists never to drink and drive and anyone who observes a suspected impaired driver are encouraged to call Police immediately if it is safe to do so. All drivers charged with impaired driving will have their license suspended until the charge is resolved in court. The vehicle will be seized, towed and stored from three days to thirty days. All costs associated to licensing, towing and storage will be the responsibility of the driver and/or the registered owner. These costs can easily run into the thousands of dollars. If you are going to consume any alcohol beverages, plan ahead for a safe ride home. Designate a sober driver (who does not drink any alcohol), call a friend or family member or contact a drivehome service, also advertised in this paper.
1917 Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Explosion On December 6, 1917 two ships collided in the Halifax port area. One ship was empty but the other was full of high explosive weapons on their way to France. The ship exploded nearly destroying Halifax and killed about 2,000, and injured about 9,000 people. Almost every window was blown out and many buildings and homes were destroyed. Soon the hospitals became full and were running out of medical supplies and short on doctors and nurses. Rescue trains from other parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick arrived, but more help was needed. A snow blizzard hit the town on December 7, 1917 which blocked rescue trains coming from central Canada and the U.S. They did arrive two days later. One train with several cars came from Boston, Massachusetts and was loaded with doctors, nurses and medical supplies. No one had asked them to contribute‌they volunteered. One year later in 1918, the people of Halifax sent a huge Christmas Tree to Boston to show their appreciation. In 1971, Halifax started sending a large precious Christmas Tree to Boston every year, which continues to this day. The Tree is placed in Boston Commons as a tribute to the friendship of people from these two cities. Submitted by Jeff Salmon
