One of the biggest donors to the cause was Gary Robinson. He augmented the lexicon with stuff like, ‘Oh. my shattered ass.’ and ’Oh Bald headed Jaysus.’ He was the Shakespeare of Shite, defining the language as he went. It was more than you could keep up with. And funny? ... well ... all I can say is, ‘Oh shit, Oh dear.’

Robinson was, like Stecker, a seer. He ‘saw’ everything a fact that manifested even in his physical eyesight. He could locate a goat or sheep on a mountainside faster than any guy with a spotting scope. But it was his ability to see through people that made him special. He was Atlin’s Don Rickles. He was that talented. Just like Rickles, he treaded the line a fact that sometimes got him into trouble. But I have to say, he was a lot of fun to Robinsonwatch.guided

Well, it turned out he was using his floor tom as a cocktail table. Thing is, it made a hell of a cocktail table able as it was to hold, without the ashtray, damn near a full case of beer a fact that he took full advantage of.

for Atlin Mountain Outfitting and was the first drummer in the Ozone Rangers. Added to the incendiary wit of the rest of the band, the chatter exploded like peppers in a frying pan. We showed up at many a gig already exhausted from three hundred miles of belly laughing.

The bonds which bind small town residents are built on everything from the physical geography to common social landmarks, but they show up mostly in the language, and particularly in the humour. Whole dialects have been built around the parlance of the small town, and Atlin is no exception. I spent the first few months here digesting, and occasionally feeding, the local dialect, and a sizable dialect it was. Everything from descriptions to definitions had a unique slant.

A SMALL TOWN IN THE NORTH PT. 1 The Language, Characters and Terminal Irreverence of A Small Town in the North by Paul Lucas

The new settlers came from everywhere, and they brought their language with them. Americans with their ‘glove box,’ prairie boys with their ‘side by each,’ Brits with their ‘bugger all,’ and Aussies with their ‘G’day,’ littered the acoustic landscape. All of this on top of a local dialect springing from trappers, miners, workers on the land and Tlingit phrases. Words crossbred like rabbits, combining and spawning all manner of utterances that were more than the sum of their parts. It was heady stuff, and it was hilarious.

Playing was always a party for the Ozone Rangers. In the early days the material ranged from Bluegrass to Classic Rock, and it came off the stage with plenty of energy. Gary was a rambunctious drummer. He kept good time, but I always thought his drum fills sounded peculiar. They always kinda tailed off before the end of the measure bamalama, bamalama, bamalama, ba .... I was non plussed, so one night I peered around his crash cymbal to see what was going on.

GARY ROBINSON

Small towns are cheeky. On the whole, the residents of small towns don’t like being told what to do. They have ways of doing things that are often at odds with what is done ‘outside.’ There is a built in irreverence in a small town that works just fine for me. It’s that fly in the ointment, that turd in the punchbowl, that keeps you on your toes; keeps you paying attention.

One night in Carcross Yukon, after doing justice to all that beer, he played one last incomplete fill, missed the cymbal, fell backwards off his stool and disappeared through the curtains at the back of the stage. Most of him anyway. What the audience ended up seeing was a pair of skinny legs wearing thoseTony Lama cowboy

external battery idea worked like a charm the first night, but when I packed up, I made the mistake of disconnecting the wires. The following night I did the entirely predictable I reversed the polarity, and when Roland came to life, he coughed a paradiddle of a death rattle and went silent. I believe it was the only paradiddle he ever played.

And Lord, ‘tis true, I have digressed yet again. I follow words like a rodent chasing crumbs down a rabbit hole. It’s a weakness of mine, a character defect that I hope one day to address.

Now I suspect you are muttering at this moment, ‘Where the hell are we going here? We started out discussing the irreverent nature of small towns, and now we are rewiring drum machines in the hinterlands of British Columbia.’

Now, where were we. Ahh yes, the language and characters spawned by a small town.

Fortunately for us, the very first drum machines had just hit the market and yours truly happened to own one a trusty Roland unit boasting a bunch of knobs that regulated time, style and the like. I thought it sounded like crap but, as it turned out, I was a decade ahead of the time the little unit ending up initiating the future sound of rap and hip hop. In any event, off we went to Cassiar B.C., and with our new drummer ‘Roly’ under my arm, we carried on.

boots of his, sticking straight up through the curtains. Those boots were beautiful. Believe me, I wasn’t the only one thinking impure thoughts.

On the way home from the gig that night, Gary drove into the ditch and managed to crack some vertebrae in his neck ... not good considering we had a gig in Cassiar B.C. the following week. He came back to town in a neck cast, looking for all the world like a teenage mutant ninja turtle. He was still wearing the boots.

The thing ended up working fine. Needless to say, it played perfect time, but it had some serious shortcomings. Along with the sterile sound, it could only play one programmed beat at a time, and we found ourselves missing Robinson’s drum fills, incomplete or not.

Trust is a beautiful thing. Your friends will trust you when the heavens are screaming NO! And they will continue to have faith, however misplaced, until proven otherwise. It’s that ‘Charlie Brown and the football’

On top of that, it was battery powered, and the pinhead who designed the thing hadn’t accounted for the fact that the batteries had to last all night. This, of course, is when yours truly gyro gearloose and pinhead in his own right, stepped in:

Well,business.the

“Say ... What if we got a big old battery of the same voltage, and wired it externally ... you know ... splice the wires to the circuit and run them outside the box. The thing would play ‘till hell froze over.”
