“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world.”

A KILLER ON THE YUKON BORDER Part 4

Sheslay Mike

POSTSCRIPT

Gunter Lishy was a man with a history. The locals who knew him describe him as someone who kept to himself - a loner who was a very good trapper and bushman, and a man who was precise in every way. His trapline cabins were meticulous - down to the swept clean surfaces and the tiny curtains on the windows. You can bet that everything from his chain saw to his traps were maintained in top condition. Some described him as ’stand offish’ and ‘bushed,’ but that description could apply to any number of trappers in the North.

Jamie Stephen, in his capacity as wildlife C.O., knew him better than most and, in fact, knew about his early life as a German soldier in World War II, captured by the Soviets and severely mistreated by the female guards of the POW campexperiences that likely shaped his outlook forever.

Gunter was not without his mysteries. For example, he was known to have, at one point, 60 lynx furs in his possession - a highly unlikely number of pelts to have harvested in one season, in fact, a high number of pelts for three high bearing seasons in a row. So where did they come from?

There is also a reference to Gunter meeting Mike Oros in Oros’ diaries - a meeting that deeply disturbed Mike because he found himself, for once, caught completely off guard by the silent appearance of the older man - a man who had bush skills as developed as his own. He just didn’t hear him coming. Lishy just sashayed into the clearing, introduced himself, engaged in a brief conversation, took Mike’s photo, then left as quickly and quietly as he arrived. Oros was shaken.

This all played into Mike’s fears and paranoia. It also fed into his suspicions that Lishy was attempting to move in on him, so when he found Gunter building and clearing around ‘his’ land on Hutsigola Lake, his reaction was to simply walk up behind him and shoot him in the back. So works a mind that has gone off the rails.

The side of this story which rarely comes to light is that Lishy was every bit as bushed as Mike, almost as paranoid, and perfectly capable of threating the life of anyone he thought was ‘muscling in’ on his territory. Judi and Doug Urquhart trapped that country for many years and ended up knowing Gunter fairly well. For the most part, they got along fine ... except for the times they didn’t. According to Judi, every now and then, Lishy would just go off the rails. Out of the blue and for no apparent reason, he would become belligerent, threatening at one point to kill them both.

The fact is, Mike Oros and Gunter Lishy were, in many ways, cut from the same cloth. Mike certainly respected Gunter’s bush skills, and Gunter admired the younger man’s moxy and ability. It’s possible that

Gunter Lishy

Gunter thought he and Mike should collaborate. Building a cabin at Hutsigola Lake could have been an attempt to spend more time in the area. Mike, evidently, saw it very differently.

For many years, Elizabeth Clarke was Atlin’s postmistress. I recently had tea with her in her beautiful log house looking out over the lake. As postmistress, she dealt with both Mike Oros and Gunter Lishy on a semi-regular basis.

Gunter, she revealed with a bit of a twinkle in her eye, was not above ‘chatting her up.’ Mike, she said, seemed intelligent, was always polite and didn’t seem to demonstrate any of the madness he displayed near the end of his life. Humans ... you just never know.

“When the final showdown came at last, a lawbook was no good ... “

(‘Liberty Valance’ - Bacharach, David)

*I was blessed with a variety of sources in writing this story. A first hand account came from my old friend, Fish and Wildlife C.O., Jamie Stephen, who had some of the earliest encounters with both Mike Oros and Gunter Lishy. Numerous other Atlinites also had contact with these men over the years, both on the land and in town: Doug and Judi Urquhart, John and Linda Reid, Elizabeth Clarke, and Jim Wallis just to mention a few. They all came away with their own perspectives.

Bob Dalgleish, Atlin’s dentist for many years, and the guy who took on the herculean task of rebuilding my front teeth after they collided with the Pine Creek Bridge, even got in on the act, identifying Gunter’s remains from his dental work after the murder.

I have to thank two books, however, for much of the factual detail:

‘The Ladies and the Lake Trout’ - a collection of stories from the perspective of three families during their early years in Atlin, written by Jamie and Helen Stephen, David and Christine Dickinson, Mike and Sue Morhun. Jamie’s story ‘Murder on the Trapline,’ is a first hand account of his encounters with both Gunter Lishy and Sheslay Mike.

‘Descent Into Madness’ by Vernon Frolick, chronicles the last thirteen years of Michael Eugene Oros’ life in the bush East and South East of Atlin - an extensive revelation of Mike’s life in decline - a decline that ended in violence and murder. Much of the detail from that period came from the scribblings and diaries seized from Mike’s caches by both Jamie and the RCMP - diaries that ended up in the hands of author and B.C. Crown Prosecutor Vernon Frolick. On the inside, author Frolick was positioned to gather together the facts of the case as well as getting a glimpse into the personal life of the man himself.

To Whom it may concern,

Thank you for your interest in the Globe Theatre

We are so appreciative of all the events that have been held at the Globe and fully realize that closing the theatre for the winter has impacts on the community. It is with much conflict and regret that we have come to this difficult decision.

As a volunteer group dedicated to the preservation and sharing of Atlin's history, we find ourselves involved in a variety of challenges. One of those challenges is the management, maintenance and improvements to the historical buildings which costs significant amounts of money and time. Our community, both local and at a distance is extremely generous and we are so very grateful for all that is given. It is our responsibility to manage those donations wisely and as they were intended.

Our thinking was that having a lease would help with the costs of maintenance but in fact, that has not been the case. Given the circumstances of Covid closures the AHS Board assisted with the cost of heating and waived the lease fee during some of that time Upcoming costs will include exterior painting, electrical upgrades as well as other safety upgrades.

Along with the financial aspect of the Globe Theatre, there is a human cost, and the AHS Board is currently spread very thinly. We feel there is a solution and we have attended several meetings, written and read many emails, and offered up several ideas. We wish to keep working on finding that solution.

Heather’s original lease expired on June 30, 2023. On the request of Heather Keny, we revisited the issue and wrote a new lease from July 1 to September 30, 2023, in order for the Theatre to stay open during the summer months. Heather happily signed the current lease and agreed to the Terms and Conditions outlined in the said lease. AHS rent for the Globe to Heather has been $167.00 per month.

The decision was made by the board not to renew the lease for the upcoming winter months. In regards to the heat the Society will be keeping the heat on over the winter months so we are able to deal with ongoing maintenance.

We continue to be grateful for the support and trust of this community. We invite any and all to become part of this great group and important cause. Volunteer to fundraise, paint, look after a building, sit on the board, help with the Tarahne Tea, create a new event, or just come on in to the museum and take a look around support the Gift shop Please become a member.

Globe Theatre in Question

Letter to the Community of Atlin and the Atlin Historical Society

September 17, 2023

The future of the Globe Theatre is in question.

Local entrepreneur Edwin Pillman built the Globe Theatre out of the ashes of the fire of 1916 which levelled much of Atlin. Despite the world being embroiled in the Great War, Pillman had the vision to create a place in the centre of town where citizens could come to watch the latest films, host pageants, and attend concerts. When the boys came back from the war, they found a state-of-the-art theatre where Pillman showed ‘talkies’ just weeks after they were released in the big cities down south. The Roaring Twenties saw Atlin and the Globe Theatre as a happening, vibrant place. Then the Great Depression put an end to all that. The Globe slipped into disrepair.

In the late nineties, the Atlin Historical Society and the community of Atlin, had the foresight to invest the time, energy, and financial resources into restoring the Globe and saving her from further decay. The Globe once again became the beating heart of the community.

Since 1999 hundreds of musicians have played the Globe and reveled at this little jewel of a performance space. We are so lucky to have the Globe.

In recent years, local entrepreneur Heather Keny has picked up Pillman’s vision to promote the Globe as a venue for film and the performing arts. Heather recognized the Globe as a national-caliber venue for music due to its perfect acoustics and intimate nature. We are so lucky to have Heather who has been keeping the Globe’s heart beating.

Heather has been a stalwart over the years in keeping the doors of the Globe open, the heat and lights on, and the seats filled. As Artistic Director she revived the Globe as a community asset. Beneath the vaulted ceiling of the Globe, Atlinites have been entertained, humoured, comforted and informed. During the dark days of 2020-2022 Heather kept right on going providing a space where Atlinites could get out of the house, meet with fellow citizens, and foster our well-being and mental health.

Heather’s lease is slated to be terminated on September 30th. I encourage the citizens of Atlin to support Heather, and to support the Atlin Historical Society, to keep the heat on such that the Globe can remain the premier performance venue in our community.

I trust that with creative thought, and with open discourse, that a solution can be achieved that meets the needs of the Historical Society, Heather Keny, and the community of Atlin.

Sincerely,

Atlin Community Improvement District

Helen Matson Obituary 1935-2023

Helen Matson, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2023, at the Irene Thomas Hospice.

Helen was survived by her brother Bruce (Anne); sons Thor (Tammy) and Mark (Heather); grandsons Erik, Joel and Mike; and granddaughters Devon and Hannah.

Born on October 4, 1935, in Atlin, BC, Helen spent her earliest years in Atlin prior to relocating to Vancouver. Helen had fond memories of being raised in Vancouver. She graduated from King Edward High School and, from there, went on to study education at the University of British Columbia.

Helen began her teaching career in Delta and Burnaby, eventually moving north to Atlin to teach in the town where she was born. While in Atlin, she met her husband Ted - they wed in 1961, eventually settling in Tsawwassen, where they raised their two sons, Thor and Mark, while Helen taught at Cliff Drive Elementary until her retirement decades later.

Although Helen and Ted called Tsawwassen home, they remained very much a part of the community in Atlin - they made the journey north by car every year to spend 6 months in their Atlin home until Ted's passing in 2011. Although the visits were shorter, Helen continued to visit Atlin on her own for many more summers. While in Atlin, she enjoyed spending time with friends and volunteering at St. Martin's church and thrift shop.

St. David's Anglican Church was of great importance to Helen. She took pride in her many ministry roles over the years, cherished the many friendships she made and thoroughly enjoyed being a parishioner.

Helen was well known for filling her home with warmth and kindness. She was often found in the kitchen baking delicious pies, cookies and her famous scones that were second to none. Helen loved to gift friends and family with fresh baked scones and homemade strawberry jam.

Helen dedicated her life to being a caring and loving daughter, sister, wife, Mom, Mother-in-law, Nana, friend and teacher. She will be greatly missed by the many people who were blessed to know her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations designated to the Irene Thomas Hospice through the Delta Hospital Community Health Foundation.

Funeral service will take place at St. David's Anglican Church, 1115 51A Street, Tsawwassen, on Friday, August 11th at 11am.

Dr. Michelle James is Retiring

Michelle has contributed to orthopedic care for children in many significant ways and volunteered her services in less advantaged countries as well. She is retiring from her position as Chief of Orthopedics at Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento, California. However, she is continuing to share her skills, knowledge, and leadership in projects, research and teaching, in which she has great interest.

Michelle is the granddaughter of Stewart James who grew up in Atlin, took tourists to the glacier along with Mickey Eggert in the great White Pass tourist days, and taught school here at the ripe age of 17 or 18. He later moved to the States and became an accountant.

Michelle’s father, Preston James, came to Atlin some summers as a child, spending time with Granny James, Uncle Cyril and Aunt Win. He learned the very valuable skills of gold mining and panning at a young age. Thus began his love for Atlin. Preston was also an orthopedic surgeon in California, well admired for his expertise, he was also a volunteer, later an employee of Shriners Hospital for Children. Michelle was her father’s boss at one time, much to Preston’s delight!

Preston and his wife Beve brought their family to Atlin on several occasions, this being a special place in his heart.

I guess something stuck with Michelle and Laurel, also Preston and Beve’s daughter, as Michelle, her husband Dave, and Laurel are now coming to Atlin in the summers, enjoying the connection to ancestry, family, and of course the beautiful wild outdoors. We hope they will come for many years, along with their own family members, and continue to be a part of our Atlin summer community.

Michelle is an exceptional human being, and we the Atlin family (Beth, Donna, and all relations) are so happy to claim this very accomplished, kind, unassuming and lovely woman as our cousin, and we want to share the acknowledgement of her accomplishments over an outstanding career, in this, her other community. To follow is the official notice of her retirement from Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento, California

CALEB Tomlinson is a singer-songwriter living in Whitehorse, Yukon. His lyrically-driven alt country ballads weave love stories through landscapes, bringing the listener along for a journey through the woods or down the river, usually with a pack filled with heartache to carry along the way. While creating a sound all his own, you'll hear echoes of John K. Samson (The Weakerthans), Josh Ritter, and Fred Eaglesmith."

TOOTS

A humorous blend of folk songs and story telling. This born again agnostic writes songs about the difficulties of being a man and the tribulations of being a quarter Jewish. A pointed message and a hopeful theme runs through the Yorkshiremans songs. 6/10.

Emerging from the shadows of the Yukon wilderness (aka the 98): FAK is a folky witchy-cowboy trio. Songwriters Night

Sara MacDonald and Kathleen McDade

The august arrival and Kathleen McDade

Led by singer-songwriter Sara MacDonald, the august arrival is a solo project supported by friends. Described as “well composed, intimate, even mystical folk rock,” the august arrival unearths something within the listener. Stripped down to their acoustic upbringings, her songs are intimate, with haunting melodies and vocal performances that cause one to wonder if they should feel guilty for eavesdropping on a reflective private moment.

For this special Globe Theatre performance, MacDonald will share the stage with Yukon musician Kathleen McDade. McDade plays fingerstyle guitar inspired by the expansive landscape and beautiful people of the North. Kathleen has played at the Kluane Bluegrass Festival, the Village Bakery, Yukon Women in Music events, the Folk Society Coffee House, and Joyfest. The night will be an intimate, acoustic show that is sure to resonate.

“A New Day” Jeff Salmon

A new day is freshly dawning as you rise to a dimly lit sky in slow transformation to a pink-red-orange showstopper. You marvel at the scene outside as a rainbow of color washes over the landscape for your viewing pleasure.

A new day with brightness rising is a gift worth beholding. Everything is enchantment now with color enriching all in a masterpiece of nature. So, you smile to greet the day and seek to share these moments with those who mean the most to brighten their new day.

A sparkly day ensues as you spread enthusiasm throughout your community with a warmhearted smile. In turn, recipients convey their friendliness to others and so on…until the world is a much happier place.

*When God Sends You Help … don't Ask Questions*

She hurried to the pharmacy to get medication. Got back to her car and found that she had locked her keys inside.

The woman found an old rusty coat hanger left on the ground. She looked at it and said, "I don't know how to use this." She bowed her head and asked God to send her some HELP.

Within 5 minutes a beat-up old motorcycle pulled up driven by a bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag. He got off of his cycle and asked if he could help.

She said: "Yes, my daughter is sick. I've locked my keys in my car. I must get home. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?"

He said, "Sure." He walked over to the car, and in less than a minute the car was open.

She hugged the man and through tears said, "Thank You, God, for sending me such a very nice man."

The man heard her little prayer and replied, "Lady, I am NOT a nice man. I just got out of prison yesterday; I was in prison for car theft."

The woman hugged the man again, sobbing, "Oh, thank you, God! You even sent me a Professional!"

Is GOD great or what!?!
