The Atlin Whisper “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world.” Margaret Mead

AVERAGE ATLIN KID Atlin News Miner 1972 Diane S Smith Here he comes down the middle of the street munching a chocolate bar just purchased at Mr. Craft’s little candy and tobacco counter. He wears faded jeans with one ripped knee and a denim jacket with sleeves too short. He hazards a kick at a rock even though his toe is sticking out of a hole in his runner. He has an Atlin home haircut easily identified by the rick rack edge at the back and the molting chicken affect over each ear, the end result of a shearing by Mom who has yet to master the art of barbering. In his pocket, along with a tangled rabbit snare, are two very gray lumps of sugar, necessary supplies in case he should meet a friendly horse with a sweet tooth. Behind follows a large dog of dubious origin traveling a zig zag course that takes him to all the best-smelling places. This is the average Atlin kid and company, going about a day’s business. Because females of all ages are outnumbered in Atlin just as in the early days, Atlin’s average kid is a boy. He is about nine years old. His way of life differs considerably from that of his counterparts in the southern regions of British Columbia and beyond. There are a multitude of things he doesn’t know about the modern world outside, but he has a special background of knowledge and experience perhaps more boys his age should have. For an average Atlin kid a big city is Whitehorse, Yukon. Beyond his scope are places like Vancouver and Toronto. A shopping trip to Whitehorse may mean snatching a couple of minutes of TV while mom shops for a new blouse. A rare treat is an overnight trip to town and a whole evening of TV in a motel with a real modern bathroom and endless gallons of hot running water in which to shower or have a bath. He won’t be able to tell you much about TV and won’t be able to discuss the latest hair- eyebrow raising movies. But he could tell you a host of things that concern him more as a boy whose life is closely related to all things outdoors. He could take you along a snowy winter trail and identify each animal track that crosses your path. He could show you how to build a cubby for a lynx set. He could tell you every fur in a Hudson’s Bay fur room. He could probably tell you if it was prime. He could identify most mineral bearing ore samples from around Atlin because he is a pretty good amateur geologist. He could show you how to pan for gold and how to operate a rocker box. The average Atlin kid has never seen a snake or a skunk but he has watched a band of caribou cross the frozen lake in front of town. He has seen moose by the dozens along the roads he travels and has watched a skittish lynx sprint across the trail in front of the dog team. He has never heard the raucous barking of a circus or carnival and he couldn’t identify the sounds of a busy city street. But he has listened to the ice when pressure cracks form and he knows the faraway howl of a wolf. Fresh watermelon, strawberries or cherries are infrequent treats for Atlin’s Average Kid. Things like artichokes, avocados and eggplant are unknowns. But he suffers not at all from their absence in his diet. He is a sturdy robust specimen whose winter diet centers on lean, delicious moose and caribou with grouse and lake trout for variety. His mother bakes the family bread and the mouth-watering aroma of fresh buns and cinnamon rolls often greets him at the end of the school day. He helps pick wild strawberries for shortcakes and jams and moss berries for pies and cobblers. There are wild cranberries and goose berries made into syrups, sauces and ketchups to whet the appetite of a growing boy. His life is simple, uncluttered with pressure and problems. He doesn’t lack for excitement. It comes in unexpected forms: a forest fire close to town, a moose hunt with Dad, a surprise ride in a bush plane or helicopter. The confidence with which he goes about the tasks of trapping, handling a horse or chopping wood for the kitchen stove often belies his age. He is happy and outgoing, at ease with adults. He is normally full of fun and pranks but causes no serious troubles around town. He is at home in this corner of the northern wilderness and is missing very little that is important to a well-rounded existence.

Archibald Lyall Knill February 4, 1933 – September 27, 2020 Archie passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Regional Hospital with his niece Cyndi Knill by his side. Archie was pre-deceased by his parents David and Margret Knill and his siblings, Erle, Murray, Ron, Joyce and Donna. He is survived by his sister Jean Hilton (Roy) of Kitchener, Ontario, he will be greatly missed by his nieces, nephews and many many friends. A life well lived… Archie came from humble beginnings in Brantford, Ontario, he was raised by his grandparents after the death of his mother when he was 5 and his father when he was 18. Archie was always footloose and fancy free, his great gusto for life and wanderlust called to him in 1958 to go west young man….off to British Columbia. Archie first stopped in Vancouver and then Vancouver Island, his path was directed to Imperial Oil in 1960, as he loved to say…”Mother Esso”! Archie spent the next 27 years with Esso, working in geophysical surface drilling and managing transportation. Archie loved anything that “moved”, airplanes, boats, cars, trucks, motorcycles, snowmobiles, heavy equipment… he considered himself lucky that he was able to live his love of transportation with his work with Esso. Archie was posted in many northern locations, Fort Nelson, Fort McPherson, Inuvik (McKenzie Delta), Resolute Bay, four years in Singapore and completing his career in Cold Lake, Alberta. When he first arrived in the McKenzie Delta the locals gave him the name “Nasaki”, Hat Too Small, he loved that name, even named his beloved Chestnut canoe the same. He had so many adventures in his northern years, one great trip was Inuvik to Cape Perry in his beloved Chestnut. After 27 years of service Imperial Oil made an offer he could not refuse and retried from his beloved “Mother Esso”. 1987 was the start of the Atlin Years! Archie purchased the property in the Pine Tree subdivision, there was a cabin and partially finished house, he lived in the cabin while the house was being built and loved his little cabin so much, that he remained living there for 22 years. He finally moved into his house in 2009, he said there was always somewhere to go, something to do, someone to talk to, he enjoyed the simplicity of the cabin. Archie had many adventures during his 33-year retirement, the story of his famous Honda 70cc motorcycle trip from Whitehorse to Norman Wells, 1200 miles following the Canol Pipeline made it all the way to the Toronto Star. Archie drove the Atlin Express bus for nine years, bringing mail, supplies and people between Atlin and Whitehorse. He was the unofficial Ambassador of Atlin, he loved to ask people “Where are you from?” and show off the amazing Atlin. Throughout his lifetime, he always had a camera in tow, there is a fantastic legacy that will be shared with the world of his photography and films. Stay tuned…. Archie has requested no service; in remembrance he had suggested donations to Atlin Supportive Living Society. His ashes will be coming home to Atlin. Archie said many times over the last few months, I will

not spend another winter in the snow, he got his wish. The world has lost one of the greats…Rest in Peace Sweet Archie. Archie loved to look at the sky and admire the clouds, stop, look up into the sky, pick a cloud and think of Archie Knill. Archie’s favorite goodbye, Happy Motoring….

And Happy Motoring to you too Archie, from all your Atlin friends who will miss you!

Elisabeth Marie "LIS" Stork Saya 1948 - 2020 Elisabeth "Lis" Marie Stork Saya was born in Pittsburg, PA on the 17th of November, 1948. She died, after a long courageous struggle with cancer, at home on the afternoon of August 24th, 2020. It is difficult to sum up the life of someone so colorful and flamboyant, so extraordinary friendly and cheerful, so kind and gentle and so full of life. When she walked into a room with her infectious laugh and smile, she lit the room up instantly. She always dressed colorfully and was the friendly artist/musician that everyone called their friend. She had an insatiable appetite for music. Anyone who knew her quickly realized that she always had time for one more tune. Hers was no ordinary life. Shortly after Lis was born, the family moved from Pittsburg to Bryn Mawr, PA. Her family was very musical. Both parents played piano and the children used to fall asleep to the sound of fourhand piano duets being played on the old upright piano. The children learned folk songs at an early age. They would often stand behind their father and sing harmony while he played piano. They would sing rounds and songs while riding in the family station wagon. The family moved several times and in 1963 they moved from Bryn Mawr, PA to Chevy Chase, MD where Lis graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1966. Lis travelled to Europe in the summer of 1966 with her older sister and friends. She stayed on in France afterwards to study French literature at the Universite Grenoble. She came back to the states to finish her studies at Boston University, graduating in 1971. Lis spoke fluent French and enjoyed reading French literature throughout her life. Shortly after graduation she met and married Vincent Daniel Saya. Vince and Lis moved to Atlin, British Columbia and then to Haines, AK and eventually to Juneau in 1977. With Vince she had two sons, Aengus and Leif. Vince and Lis parted company shortly after Leif's birth. In 1983 she met and fell in love with Greg McLaughlin, a concertina player, who would become her lifelong partner and together they raised the two boys. Together, they shared a deep love of traditional Irish music. Lis and Greg were inseparable, they promoted and organized concerts, started musical groups, wrote books and traveled extensively to Ireland, England, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Iceland, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. Lis had the ability to make friends wherever she went. Someone once said "Give Lis 5 minutes of your time and she will become your best friend". Lis taught for the Head Start program in Juneau for 30 years. Her favorite times at Head Start were cooking for the children and circle time (when they would all sing). Lis was always ready to play a tune or meet a new friend. She was adopted into the Tlingit community by her "sister" Helen Watkins of the thunderbird clan. Lis was heavily involved in the community as part of the symphony choir, Bach Society, Saturday Plein Rein art group, French circle, contra dance community, Wednesday night old time jam, highland dance community and beading circle, just to mention a few. Lis could often be seen at symphony performances, theater, opera, folk concerts, art shows or in the lobby at the Folk Festival jamming with other musicians. She loved to play for the contra dances when given the opportunity. Lis lived her life to the fullest. She travelled, she dreamed, she worked, she played, she fell down and picked herself back up again with a smile on her face. Even when diagnosed with cancer, she faced the end of life with dignity, grace, integrity and courage. Lis is proceeded in death by her father, George Fredrick Stork and her mother, Mary Ernestine Weber Stork. She is survived by her husband and partner of 37 years Greg McLaughlin and her two sons Aengus and Leif, her three sisters Cathy Waters of Fairfield, PA, Lyrinda Snyderman of Berkeley, CA, Diana Stork of Berkeley, CA and her brother David Stork of Portola Valley, CA, her granddaughter, Ysabella Healey of Sturgeon Bay, WI and her former husband Vince Saya of Mammoth Lakes, CA. Memorial service has been delayed due to Covid, but we are looking forward to celebrating her life at a time when we can all play music and hold each other again. It is the way she would have liked it to be. A memorial fund has been set up in her name for a scholarship to send a child to Ireland to study traditional Irish music. Donations can be made to the Lis Saya Memorial Fund c/o Northrim Bank, Juneau, AK 99801.
