FIRE! FIRE! The AFD Springs Into Action By Paul Lucas Atlin,1987. Atlin has a small fire department, and a pretty good one at that. Incidents are few and far between, and most are dispatched with aplomb. Hilarious events have been known to happen though, which, to any resident of the North, should come as no surprise. On winter afternoon I was practising guitar, my little Martin perched on my lap, and staring out the window at Atlin Mountain. The vividly blue sky had that crystalline appearance it gets when the air is really cold. A high wind was drawing a long whispy cloud of snow across the peaks. It wasn’t a day to be on the lake. Suddenly, through a veil of scale notes, I hear the unmistakeable sound of a siren. Faint at first, it was coming closer by the minute and, in fact, appeared to be coming up the road we shared with our neighbour on the hill. Evidently, he had called in a small roof fire and the cavalry had wasted no time in responding. They’d mounted up and were charging to the rescue. The going was tough. Fresh snow had fallen, traction wasn’t very good, and the road was steep. The fire truck laboured up the gill, its rear end fishtailing back and forth, while the driver struggled to keep the vehicle out of the ditch. Gravity being what it is, stuff started to slide around in the bouncing vehicle. One of the items that decided to move about was the battery. In this truck, the battery is located underneath the driver’s seat. Normally well strapped down, this one had enough range of motion that every time the truck bounced, the springs underneath the seat came in contact with the terminals, and the sparks were flyin’. The next thing our heroes knew, the front seat was on fire, and it was every man for himself. They spent the next few minutes putting out the blaze. The roof fire was forgotten. It really didn’t matter in the end, though. By the time they were done, the neighbour, having managed to put out the fire with his garden hose, was already back inside eating dinner. Well, the irony was delicious. The town feasted on it for months. Until Hart threw the fire coals down Stecker’s outhouse hole and burned the whole thing to the ground, that is. But that’s another story.

“A Dewdrop” The young boy of the house briefly awakens, assumes mom will make pancakes for breakfast, then falls back to sleep with a smile on his face. The mom, who is an artist, awakens in a dream then slowly becomes aware of the early light. At the window she sees the sun grace everything in sight with color, and is inspired. The dad, who is a writer, reluctantly awakens. However, there are phrases he needs to put to paper before they are lost to the busyness of the day. In the kitchen he puts up a pot of coffee, then jots down words in his journal. Outside, a mourning dove drones on and on with a weary pronouncement of the day’s arrival, while a red-headed finch issues an enthusiastic proclamation of a beautiful new day unfolding. A dewdrop at the tip of a wildflower leaf glimmers in a shaft of sunlight, then shimmers as a gentle breeze arrives. The dewdrop holds on to the leaf for dear life enhancing the day with a sparkle of sunshine. How will you greet your new day? Jeff Salmon
