☺ USELESS FACTS

Canada makes up 6.67 percent of the Earth's land area * Owls are one of the only birds who can see the color blue * 100% of lottery winners do gain weight * Only one person in two billion will live to be 116 or older * Mosquito repellents don't repel. They hide you. The spray blocks the mosquito's sensors so they don't know you're there. * The HyperMart outside of Garland Texas has 58 checkouts. http://www.djtech.net/humor/useless_fa cts.htm http://ww w.et/h um or/us eles s _f acts.htm

Friendship Feasts is a made in Faro program, it is not affiliated with Social Services, the Faro Health Centre, or any government program. If you are able to make a meal for a family once in a while, please get yourself on the Friendship Feast list. You may get called once in 6 months. To receive meals, you just need to nominate yourself or someone who you know needs meals. Generally, Friendship Feasts provides meals when there has been a death or other hardship in the family, when someone is recovering from an operation or sickness, or when a family brings home a new baby. Getting involved in Friendship Feasts is a great way to get involved in our community and to meet people in town in a meaningful way.

Please remember- someone must call on your behalf or you can call to ask for meals. Our volunteers do not make meals unless we have been asked. If you are not on the list, please call KARA WENT at 994-3114 to sign yourself up! We are always looking for new folks who are able to provide a meal.

FARO RCMP DETACHMENT Hello Summer!! Congratulations to our Van Gorder School graduates!! Great job and good luck with all your future endeavors!! Have you lost your bike? A Faro resident located a bicycle at the baseball diamonds. The bike is in good shape and is waiting for its owner to pick it up at the detachment. Faro RCMP have received no complaints of stolen bikes leaving us with no one to return the bike to. If you have lost your bike please stop in and let us know. Summer means bike season! The Faro RCMP are very pleased to see all of our young cyclists out enjoying the warm weather and physical activity. Parents please continue to talk with your kids about safe practices while they venture out on their bikes. The most important safe practice is to ensure they have correctly fitting helmets. The RCMP continue to remind the youth about bike helmets however we really need the help of the parents in the community to talk to the youth about the importance of bike helmets and to make sure they have them on. When we stop the youth who are not wearing them, the most common answer for why they are not wearing a helmet is that it is at home. While driving and enjoying your ATV or off road machine please be mindful that not everyone shares your joy and enthusiasm for the noise associated to some of the machines. When you have to ride a trail near houses please ride with your neighbors enjoyment of their property and space in mind. Some folks live in isolated areas for peace and quiet while others live here for great outdoor recreation. With a little thought and consideration we can all enjoy what Faro has to offer together. While traveling this summer keep the posted speed limits in mind. The RCMP are still encountering speeding offences on the Robert Campbell Highway and it is our goal to make our roadways safe and with a little help from the public we can achieve this. Last month we talked about seatbelt use and since then the RCMP have issued verbal warnings to community members for not wearing their seatbelt. We encourage people to get in the practice of buckling up or violation tickets will be issued. Enjoy the camping season and the great fishing. Have a great June!! To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994-5555 or 1-867-667-5555. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted. Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Miscellaneous LOOK UP!

July 1 - Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. A spectacular conjunction of Venus and Jupiter will be visible in the evening sky. The two bright planets will be extremely close, appearing only 0.3 degrees apart. Look for this impressive pairing in the western sky just after sunset. July 2 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 02:19 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Buck Moon because the male buck deer would begin to grow their new antlers at this time of year. This moon has also been known as the Full Thunder Moon and the Full Hay Moon. July 14 - New Horizons at Pluto. NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at Pluto after a nine and a half year journey. Launched on January 19, 2006, this will be the first spacecraft to visit Pluto. New Horizons will give us our first close-up views of the dwarf planet and its moons. After passing Pluto, the spacecraft will continue on to the Kuiper belt to examine some of the other icy bodies at the edge of the Solar System. July 16 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 01:24 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere. July 28, 29 - Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Delta Aquarids is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by debris left behind by comets Marsden and Kracht. The shower runs annually from July 12 to August 23. It peaks this year on the night of July 28 and morning of July 29. The nearly full moon will block out all but the brightest meteors this year. But if you are patient, you should still be able to catch a quite few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky. July 31 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 10:43 UTC.

Midsummer Joys by Winifred Sackville Stoner, Jr.

Give me the joys of summer, Of SUMMER QUEEN so fair, With wealth of lovely flowers And fruits and sun-kissed air! Talk not to me of winter With ice and frost and snow, Nor changing spring and autumn When howling winds will blow. No, I will take the joys Of SUMMER every time, So to this Queen of Seasons I dedicate my rhyme.

Michael Powaschuk 1958-2015 On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, Michael Powaschuk (Mad Mike), late of Ross River, Yukon, passed away peacefully at Calgary Foothills Medical Center with his family by his side. Mike was born in Swift Current, SK on September 19, 1958. He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Cecile (St. Jean). He is survived by his sons Trevor (Tanya) and Scott Seibel and daughter Angela Brady (David); grandchildren Jesse, Tyler, David, Shantelle, Emma, Olivia and Austin; brothers Anthony, Daniel (Line Mercier) and Christopher (Sylvie Monette) as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mike was a man of many hats who liked people and enjoyed helping others. He loved his community of Ross River and, over the years, served it in many ways. In 1987, he became Fire Chief of Ross River and held that role for nearly 30 years. Having served in the Army Reserves before moving to the Yukon, Mike also found his place in Ross River leading the local reservist regiment of Canadian Rangers, as a Sergeant, and enjoyed the opportunity to serve his country that way. Mike was a man of honor and integrity. He was liked by most, but loved by anyone he let into his heart. He extended his home and his heart to many people across the Yukon and the world. If Mike counted you among his friends, you were truly a fortunate person. Mad Mike, as he liked to be called in the Yukon, will be deeply missed by family and friends. A celebration of life will take place at his home in Ross River, YT on July 11, 2015. A service will be held at the Catholic Church@ 2pm. There will be a meal to follow. Everyone is welcome. Messages of condolences can be sent by email to RIPMadMike@gmail.com or by regular mail to P.O. Box 10, Ross River, Yukon, Y0B 1S0. Flowers are gratefully declined. In honor of Mike’s memory please spread goodwill and kindness to each other and tread lightly on your journey.
