MAY 2014 DVG School

In the end, only three things matter; How much you loved, How gently you lived, And How gracefully you let go of things not meant for you Buddha

More people are killed annually by donkeys than airplane crashes * The fingerprints of koala bears are virtually indistinguishable from those of humans, so much so that they can be easily confused at a crime scene. * The 57 on the Heinz ketchup bottle represents the number of pickle types the company once had. * Paraskevidekatriaphobia means fear of Friday the 13th, which occurs one to three times a year * The average raindrop falls at 7 miles per hour. http://www.djtech.net/humor/useless_fa cts.htm http://ww w.et/h um or/us eles s _f acts.htm

Have you ever been to a Bridge Building Competition? I have!! I went to Whitehorse on Saturday April 11 for the 22nd Annual Bridge Bridge Building Competition, hosted by the Yukon Association of Professional Engineers and Yukon College. My friend Sammy and I were partners. We built a pretty cool bridge, called a Truss Bridge. For materials we were allowed to use wooden coffee stir sticks, wood glue and dental floss. My cousin Theo and his friend were in the bridge building completion too. At the end of it we got t shirts and trophies and money and prizes like a rubix cube. Our bridge held 22.5 kg before it broke. Theos bridge held 36 kg and there was a bridge from Ross River that held the most weight, 67.20 kg!! That's about 150 pounds! Holy smokes! There were 39 bridges from 5 different communities entered in the Grade 4 and 5 category. It was fun to watch the judges break all the bridges. That's my experience at a Bridge Building Contest! I am going to enter an even better bridge next year!

HOURS: Friendship Feasts is a made in Faro program, it is not affiliated with Social Services, the Faro Health Centre, or any government program. If you are able to make a meal for a family once in a while, please get yourself on the Friendship Feast list. You may get called once in 6 months. To receive meals, you just need to nominate yourself or someone who you know needs meals. Generally, Friendship Feasts provides meals when there has been a death or other hardship in the family, when someone is recovering from an operation or sickness, or when a family brings home a new baby. Getting involved in Friendship Feasts is a great way to get involved in our community and to meet people in town in a meaningful way.

Please remember- someone must call on your behalf or you can call to ask for meals. Our volunteers do not make meals unless we have been asked. If you are not on the list, please call KARA WENT at 994-3114 to sign yourself up! We are always looking for new folks who are able to provide a meal.

FARO RCMP DETACHMENT Spring is finally here! We would like to thank the Town of Faro for organizing the annual Volunteer Spring Clean-up for our community. Thank you to the volunteer’s for cleaning our amazing Town before we show case our Community to many visitor’s that will be arriving for The Crane & Sheep Viewing Festival. To the parents out there, please take a couple of minutes to discuss with your children about the dangers of entering any of the abandoned houses or buildings found throughout our community. Many of these buildings can easily be accessed by curious children. It’s important that our youth understand these are not playgrounds. There are real dangers associated with entering these structures that include broken glass; unsafe structural condition’s and mold. We are very fortunate to live in ATV and dirt bike country. Let’s all enjoy the trails and forests safely. Throughout April, RCMP has noticed some unlawful use of these machines. Any motor vehicle that is operated on a public road or highway must be registered. Any driver operating a motor vehicle on a public road or highway must have a valid driver’s license and have insurance. This is not to punish those using the machines. It is more for the protection of the safety and property of those who are legally using the road ways. RCMP in Faro will be very tolerant of the safe use of off road vehicles, however, please stay on the trails. If a roadway must be used to access a trail the roadway should be crossed and a trail should be in close proximity to the crossing. The shoulder of the road is not to be used as a traveling lane for off road vehicles. Please play safe and let common sense be your best guide to an accident and injury free spring and summer. May 13th-19th marks Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world. In recognition of the week Faro RCMP will be conducting checkpoints and enforcement initiatives to promote safe driving habits. Our focus will be on driving behaviors that can put drivers, passengers and other road users in danger such as impaired driving, not wearing a seat belt, speed, and aggressive and distracted driving. We’d like to remind everyone of the danger fire poses in these dry conditions. With a little wind a small backyard fire can grow out of control. Parent please be mindful of youngsters and take the time to ensure they understand matches and fire are not for playing with. With the early spring and lack of snow the baseball fields are dry enough to see some use. Thursday April 30 will mark the first planned baseball game. All skill levels are welcome, please plan to come out and play at 7:30 pm. The more the merrier. Enjoy the nice weather!! To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994-5555 or 1-867-667-5555. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted. Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

FARO SUMMER BALL Well, it's getting nice out, the sun is shinning and the ball diamonds are dry and ready for some action. I, for one, am ready for ball. Ball is a great summer sport that everyone can enjoy, no matter what your age or skill level. So, here are the details! There will be a registration, and from that, I will be able to determine if any changes are needed. Sheep and Crane Festival is coming quickly, so it might be best to start youth practices on Monday, May 11th. Adult slowpitch will start on a different date. This will give us time for registration, organize supplies/gear, and have everything together for youth. Youth practices will be:

The Class of 2015 (Riley and Dustin) along with their parents (Mike and Jodi Boyd and TJ and Heather Grantham) invite our most awesome community of Faro out to celebrate their graduation from Del Van Gorder School.

- T-Ball for ages 4-7 .... Mondays 4:30-5:30

This community has supported these boys, and has helped them grow up to be the kind, smart, responsible, successful young men they have become. Our families want to thank you and celebrate our sons’ achievements!

Adult slowpitch will be every Monday and Thursday starting at 7:30pm. This will allow most people time to come home from work and eat. It would end around 9:30pm, but I'm sure this will go as long, or as short, as people want to play.

Please join us for a community dinner and concert with the Whitehorse band "Speed Control" on Saturday the 23rd of May at 6:00pm, in the picnic/market area across from the school parking lot (weather permitting-if the weather is poor, alternate arrangements will be made)

- Ages 8 and up .... Thursdays 6:30-7:30 This is not through Baseball Canada, so along with the registration form there will be a waiver of liability form to be signed by the parents for youth to participate.

I know ages 8 and up is a large range of skill level. If there is enough youth to make a "middle" group, I would be more than willing to do this. Registration will help determine this. For this reason, all older teens that want to participate in the adult slowpitch can do so after practice. Having said that, I think we can all appreciate that we want to set a great example for our youth. I would ask everyone to be responsible when it comes to alcohol. I am sure this would never become an issue, but please keep alcohol off the field. Registration forms and liability forms will be at the rec center, please see Sarah. FIRST ADULT SLOWPITCH is THURSDAY, APRIL 30th.

Hope to see everybody there!!!

There is no registration or waiver forms for adult slowpitch. This is a come, play and have fun.

Miscellaneous LOOK UP!

May 4 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 03:42 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Flower Moon because this was the time of year when spring flowers appeared in abundance. This moon has also been known as the Full Corn Planting Moon and the Milk Moon. May 5, 6 - Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Eta Aquarids is an above average shower, capable of producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. Most of the activity is seen in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the rate can reach about 30 meteors per hour. It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet Halley, which has known and observed since ancient times. The shower runs annually from April 19 to May 28. It peaks this year on the night of May 5 and the morning of the May 6. The nearly full moon will be a big problem this year blocking out all but the brightest meteors. If you are patient, you should still be able to catch a few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky. May 7 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation of 21.2 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset. May 18 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 04:13 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere. May 23 - Saturn at Opposition. The ringed planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view and photograph Saturn and its moons. A medium-sized or larger telescope will allow you to see Saturn's rings and a few of its brightest moons.
