DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS

2:00 AM SUNDAY MARCH 8TH 2015 When Spring Comes

FRIDAY March 20th

1st Day of spring

Soon spring is coming to Faro. We will know when the flowers come out and grass grows. In spring I like to climb trees and mountains. My family likes to go camping and play in the lake and dip feet in the river. When we go camping there are still icicles on the lake and I suck them like popsicles. Spring is for new life. My cat Sasha might have kittens and our horse Katy is going to have a new colt or filly. In spring I see spider webs, lady bugs, bees and caterpillars. Bears come out of their dens, birds come back from the south and start making nests. People in Faro grow gardens, mow lawns, and go to Fish Eye Lake. I like to ride my bike in spring, and have races with my friends. Spring makes me feel free and happy! By Lydia Grantham

Friendship Feasts is a made in Faro program, it is not affiliated with Social Services, the Faro Health Centre, or any government program. If you are able to make a meal for a family once in a while, please get yourself on the Friendship Feast list. You may get called once in 6 months. To receive meals, you just need to nominate yourself or someone who you know needs meals. Generally, Friendship Feasts provides meals when there has been a death or other hardship in the family, when someone is recovering from an operation or sickness, or when a family brings home a new baby. Getting involved in Friendship Feasts is a great way to get involved in our community and to meet people in town in a meaningful way. Please remember- someone must call on your behalf or you can call to ask for meals. Our volunteers do not make meals unless we have been asked. If you are not on the list, please call KARA WENT at 994-3114 to sign yourself up! We are always looking for new folks who are able to provide a meal.

Department of Environment The weather seems to be cooperating quite well with us these past few weeks as another month has passed and the great weather remains with us. We hope everyone is finding some time to get out and enjoy it. We would like to remind everyone that we will be getting our new licenses and permits later on in March and not to forget to renew your licenses. Particularly angling licenses, as this is a great time of year to get out there on the ice to catch a few! Most licenses will expire on March 31st so drop by the office to get yours renewed on or after April 1st. Licenses are also available at the Territorial Agent. Also the Bison Hunt ends on March 31st 2014 so please report to the Conservation Office if you harvested a Bison or if you have any questions about this. For the people who took part in this hunt this year, we hope that it was successful and enjoyable. A reminder to everyone out enjoying nature during the home stretch of winter to please use caution and enjoy your time responsibly. This time of year is particularly dangerous as ice begins to melt and water creeps to the surface. As well, ensure you are prepared. Although the days are very nice, it still gets quite cold at night. Carry a personal survival kit with you at all times when out in the environment. Things can happen quickly and a short afternoon snowmobile ride can quickly turn into an overnight survival type situation. As most people are probably aware, there will be a change in staff here at the Faro Conservation Office as Leithe is off on Maternity Leave and we will be welcoming Judy Freake back while she is away! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to drop by our office or call 994-2862. Happy Spring! â˜ş TJ & Leithe

LOOK UP! March 5 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and will be fully illuminated as seen from Earth. This phase occurs at 18:06 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Worm Moon because this was the time of year when the ground would begin to soften and the earthworms would reappear. This moon has also been known as the Full Crow Moon, the Full Crust Moon, the Full Sap Moon, and the Lenten Moon. March 6 - Dawn at Ceres. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft will encounter the dwarf planet known as Ceres on March 6. Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Because of its size and shape, it has officially been classified as a dwarf planet, which puts it in the same category as Pluto. Ceres is 590 miles (950 kilometers) in diameter and is large enough to have a round shape. Dawn will spend several months studying Ceres and will send back the first close-up images of a dwarf planet in our Solar System. March 20 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 09:36 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere. March 20 - Total Solar Eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the Sun, revealing the Sun's beautiful outer atmosphere known as the corona. The path of totality for this eclipse will be limited to the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans between Greenland and northern Russia. March 20 - March Equinox. The March equinox occurs at 22:45 UTC. The Sun will shine directly on the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This is also the first day of spring (vernal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of fall (autumnal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere.

IRISH STEW Ingredients - Original recipe makes 8 servings 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 pounds beef stew meat, cubed 3 cups stout beer (such as GuinnessÂŽ) 2 potatoes, peeled and sliced 2 potatoes, peeled and quartered salt and ground black pepper to taste -Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
