Open Letter to Faro Town Council: While I have only been in Faro since September of last year, I have come to regard the people here as some of the friendliest and most openly welcoming people I have met anywhere. My first visit to the Discovery Store could not have been more pleasant if I had scripted it myself. As I got to know them over the past nine months my opinion of each of them has only grown higher. The town is blessed with fantastic people, an impressive visitor centre, inspiring natural beauty, remarkable walking trails, a terrific golf course in the middle of town, and when you include the arboretum into the mix it truly is a destination which should be sought after by any number of visitors. There is however a major blight which currently occupies both Campbell St. and Ogilivie Crescent. The primary problem being the length of time it has been part of the landscape. So long in fact that it is commonly overlooked. The abandoned row houses that occupy these sections of road are a total menace. While I have no doubt that every parent in town has had the discussion with their children about steering clear of this hazard, is it really something to which they should be subjected in the first place? When you include the potential fire threat and vulnerability of the residents along Ogilvie Crescent into the mix I have to wonder what damage has to be done before council decides to act. I am more than certain that there is a very long and complex history surrounding the ownership and ultimate responsibility surrounding these properties; one cannot help but wonder what possible benefit is being derived by status quo. The obvious safety concerns aside, the hideous appearance alone should be enough to warrant their removal. Tourist season upon us and once again all of the people coming to see “The Best Kept Secret in the Yukon will be treated to a display of a town that apparently lacks either the political will or the intestinal fortitude required to correct this disservice to its residents. As for possible land uses once the demolition has taken place you could go with an extended green space for the sheer aesthetics or on a more practical level a community greenhouse may represent better value. I leave this council with one simple question: Are you prepared to commit to the residents, whom you claim to serve, that you will provide a solution to the obvious peril which continues to exist? Dave Durand

*The Frozen Mukluk newsletter is about community, not politics, and strongly encourages everyone to discuss any issues/comments and/or concerns directly with Council (Contact info & public council meeting dates are included on the Town of Faro page as always)

FARO RCMP DETACHMENT

Congratulations to the organizers, volunteers and presenters for successfully hosting The Annual Crane & Sheep Viewing Festival. Everyone enjoyed the great food, company and the live entertainment. Visitor feedback was position. Good Job, Faro. To help prevent unnecessary forest fires please be mindful while hauling trailers to ensure the slack on the safety chains are adjusted to prevent sparking on the Highway’s asphalt and do not throw lit cigarettes out of the vehicle. Yukon Fire officials have reported that burning permits are suspended across the Territory and will no longer be issued given the current conditions. A campfire ban has not been issued for the Territory but burning has been banned in Kluane Nation Park. We would like to remind boat operators and passengers that all people on board should be wearing a life jacket/vest. If you are not wearing it…it will not work. Let’s play safe out there on our awesome lakes and rivers. The RCMP met with Major and Council and established new traffic enforcement priorities for the community. Residents take notice that the following areas will be enforced by the police immediately: Impaired driving, seat belts, stop signs and speeding (in town and on the Highway). There has been a noticeable increase in these areas. The RCMP conducted traffic check stops during the Canada Road Safety Week a National Campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world. The Faro RCMP had contact with 39 motorists and issued 9 violation tickets during this campaign. Baseball for youth and adults are in full swing. The turn outs have been good. This is a great social sport and all skill levels are welcome. See you there! Let’s hope this amazing weather continues in June. Let’s enjoy this amazing weather!! To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994-5555 or 1-867-667-5555. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted. Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

GOSSIP COLUMN

OF DEB EDWARDS RUMOUR:

DEB’S RETIRING.

(OMG OMG!! OMG!!) !!

ANSWER:

THIS IS PARTLY

TRUE. AFTER WORKING FOR ALMOST 35 YEARS AS A PRIMARY HEALTH CARE NURSE, I AM STEPPING AWAY FROM FULL TIME. I AM NOT MOVING AWAY.

On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, Michael Powaschuk (Mad Mike), late of Ross River, Yukon, passed away peacefully at Calgary Foothills Medical Center with his family by his side. Mike was born in Swift Current, SK on September 19, 1958. He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Cecile (St. Jean). He is survived by his sons Trevor (Tanya) and Scott Seibel and daughter Angela Brady (David); grandchildren Jesse, Tyler, David, Shantelle, Emma, Olivia and Austin; brothers Anthony, Daniel (Line Mercier) and Christopher (Sylvie Monette) as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mike was a man of many hats who liked people and enjoyed helping others. He loved his community of Ross River and, over the years, served it in many ways. In 1987, he became Fire Chief of Ross River and held that role for nearly 30 years. Having served in the Army Reserves before moving to the Yukon, Mike also found his place in Ross River leading the local reservist regiment of Canadian Rangers, as a Sergeant, and enjoyed the opportunity to serve his country that way. Mike was a man of honor and integrity. He was liked by most, but loved by anyone he let into his heart. He extended his home and his heart to many people across the Yukon and the world. If Mike counted you among his friends, you were truly a fortunate person. Mad Mike, as he liked to be called in the Yukon, will be deeply missed by family and friends. A celebration of life will take place at his home in Ross River, YT on July 11, 2015. A service will be held at the Catholic Church@ 2pm. There will be a meal to follow. Everyone is welcome. Messages of condolences can be sent by email to RIPMadMike@gmail.com or by regular mail to P.O. Box 10, Ross River, Yukon, Y0B 1S0. Flowers are gratefully declined. In honor of Mike’s memory please spread goodwill and kindness to each other and tread lightly on your journey.

I AM STAYING HERE IN FARO WITH ERNIE. I WILL BE TAKING THE SUMMER OFF, SO MY LAST DAY OF FULL TIME WORK WILL BE JUNE 24TH. COME SEPTEMBER I WILL BE DOING PART-TIME NURSING (a.k.a.-AOC). SO, SAY HELLO TO ME, NOT

It's been a full year since we transferred from Faro to Lunenburg, NS. It has been a great move for us since it has placed us one hour from our families but we have an ever happy spot In our hearts for Faro. We settled in nicely to the different pace of the south, travelling to work and school, and hockey. The children are very happy and doing great in their new school of Bluenose Academy. They talk constantly about the way things happened in Faro and how special the time we had there was. They save all their money to visit Faro. I think this is a giant testament to the town and its people.

GOOD-BYE. DEB

Thanks for the great memories Faro. Michelle, Tim, Josie and Alex Lynch

In Memory of Wolf Eberlein I want to sincerely ‘Thank’ everyone for your support, friendship and kindness over the last few weeks since Wolf passed away. Wolf’s family and friends were always very important to him, and he and I were blessed to have so many people, in the Faro- Magundy River- Little Salmon community, in Whitehorse and across the Yukon, who we truly called our friends. Thank you to the people who generously helped, in so many ways, with the Celebration of Life. To those who set up the room so beautifully, those who provided the food and flowers, those who attended, those who were thinking of Wolf from a river or mountain, those who spoke with such heartfelt emotion and told funny stories, and to everyone who was with us in spirit from miles away. Special Thanks to Heinz Sauer, for being a true friend to Wolf and a masterful Master of Ceremonies, and to Heather Campbell for the slide show & the countless things she did to ensure it was a beautiful tribute to Wolf. Although I am unable to list each person by name, your kind words, generous acts and condolences during this difficult time have been, and always will be, greatly appreciated. Thank you to the medical people who took care of Wolf in the ambulance, the Faro Nursing Station, Whitehorse Hospital and St Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. I am so grateful for your respect and kindness and compassionate care to my dear husband. Although this is an incredibly sad time, and I miss Wolf terribly, I find comfort in knowing how fortunate Wolf and I have been to have so many good friends and wonderful family. Glenda Eberlein
