HISTORICAL WEATHER

Max Temp: +3.3 C Max Temp. Date: January 16th 2015

Min Temp: -40.7 C Min Temp Date: January 5th 2015 Precipitation: 0.00 mm Maximum Wind: 43 kms/hr Mean Temp: -17.3 C

The sight filled the northern sky; the immensity of it was scarcely conceivable. As if from Heaven itself, great curtains of delicate light hung and trembled. Pale green and rose-pink, and as transparent as the most fragile fabric, and at the bottom edge a profound fiery crimson like the fires of Hell, they swung and shimmered loosely with more grace than the most skillful dancer. PHILIP PULLMAN, The Golden Compass

USELESS FACTS In Singapore, it is illegal to sell or own chewing gum * A strawberry isn’t actually a berry, but a banana is * Ten percent of the Russian government’s income is from Vodka sales * All polar bears are left handed * Coca Cola would be green if color wasn’t added to it * If too many pistachios are shipped in a single container they wills elf-heat and cause spontaneous combustion

Health Center News In addition to the doctors who will be here in January, we have another familiar face we’d like to welcome back – Jeanne George! Jeanne will be joining the health center team once again at the start of the month. It’s flu time again. The flu shot is available. Drop in to get yours! With the colder season coming people are spending more time indoors, and that means more chance of sharing cold & flu germs. Hand washing is the BEST way to prevent passing germs to those around you. Also use Kleenex to sneeze into or your elbow if you have nothing else. If you are unwell, please, please, for the sake of the people you work with, the people you go to school with or the people you party with: Stay Home. Rest, get plenty of fluids, take acetaminophen for aches, sore throats & fevers. Stock up on cold & flu supplies for yourself & family. If you have questions about cold/flu, there are places to consult for general advice: the Yukon Health Guide, the Do I Need to see the Nurse/Doctor guide pages 7-9 for Children & pages 31-33 for Adults , (available @ the Health Center), or 811. For more specific advice contact the nurses at the Health Center. From the Folks Who Help You to Be Healthy.

Friendship Feasts is a made in Faro program, it is not affiliated with Social Services, the Faro Health Centre, or any government program. If you are able to make a meal for a family once in a while, please get yourself on the Friendship Feast list. You may get called once in 6 months. To receive meals, you just need to nominate yourself or someone who you know needs meals. Generally, Friendship Feasts provides meals when there has been a death or other hardship in the family, when someone is recovering from an operation or sickness, or when a family brings home a new baby. Getting involved in Friendship Feasts is a great way to get involved in our community and to meet people in town in a meaningful way. Please remember- someone must call on your behalf or

you can call to ask for meals. Our volunteers do not make meals unless we have been asked. If you are not on the list, please call KARA WENT at 994-3114 to sign yourself up! We are always looking for new folks who are able to provide a meal.

Miscellaneous LOOK UP January 3, 4 - Quadrantids Meteor Shower. The Quadrantids is an above average shower, with up to 40 meteors per hour at its peak. It is thought to be produced by dust grains left behind by an extinct comet known as 2003 EH1, which was discovered in 2003. The shower runs annually from January 1-5. It peaks this year on the night of the 3rd and morning of the 4th. The second quarter moon will block out all but the brightest meteors this year, but it could still be a good show if you are patient. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Bootes, but can appear anywhere in the sky. January 10 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 01:30 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere. January 24 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 01:46 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Wolf Moon because this was the time of year when hungry wolf packs howled outside their camps. This moon has also been know as the Old Moon and the Moon After Yule.
