USELESS THINGS WE LEARN FROM THE MOVIES

All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large red readouts so you know exactly when they're going to explode. * All pistols shoot at least 20 times. * Any lock can be defeated by a credit card or a paper clip in seconds - unless it's the door to a burning building with a child trapped inside. * Guns are like disposable razors - if you run out of bullets, just simply throw the gun away. You can always buy a new one. www.freemaninstitute.com/uselessFacts.htm

Using a SPF 25 or greater can help. Reapplication is necessary, please follow instructions on bottle. After sunburn: best product - Aloe Vera Gel, other products can be used. Sunburn needs treatment of the skin just like other burns do. STOP the burn with cool water not cold, and DO NOT USE butter, lard, Vaseline or Ozenol type ointment, as this holds the heat of the burn, creating more damage. If you have questions, check your Yukon Health Guide, 811, or check the internet for information on sunburns. This is also the time to remember boat safety by wearing life jackets, not sitting on them. Helmets while riding bicycles and ATV’s. Helmets must be adjusted to fit the wearer, and must protect the forehead as well. Helmets worn covering the hair only will not protect the front of the head. Mosquito season has started, if using a repellant please follow application directions. For those people who have severe allergies that need an Epi-pen check the expiry date.

Friendship Feasts is a made in Faro program, it is not affiliated with Social Services, the Faro Health Centre, or any government program. If you are able to make a meal for a family once in a while, please get yourself on the Friendship Feast list. You may get called once in 6 months. To receive meals, you just need to nominate yourself or someone who you know needs meals. Generally, Friendship Feasts provides meals when there has been a death or other hardship in the family, when someone is recovering from an operation or sickness, or when a family brings home a new baby. Getting involved in Friendship Feasts is a great way to get involved in our community and to meet people in town in a meaningful way.

Please remember- someone must call on your behalf or you can call to ask for meals. Our volunteers do not make meals unless we have been asked. If you are not on the list, please call KARA WENT at 994-3114 to sign yourself up! We are always looking for new folks who are able to provide a meal. IMPORTANT NUMBERS

Fire prevention is a responsibility all of us share. It is important to understand safe fire practices so that everyone can enjoy Yukon's forests. The following are some tips for both residents and recreationalists that will help to prevent damage or injury from an out-of-control fire. When building your campfire, keep these things in mind: - Choose your site carefully - Prepare your campfire by removing all leaves, twigs and other flammable material from the area - Use a designated fire pit or build a ring of rocks at least five metres from structures and tents - Keep your fire under control and prevent it from sparking into surrounding bushes and tress - Never leave your campfire unattended When extinguishing your campfire: - Pour water on the fire and douse the site thoroughly - Stir the campfire until there are no embers and the ashes are cold to the touch. If necessary, douse again.

FIRE 994-2222

During the spring and fall, many Yukoners take the opportunity to clear their property by burning dead trees, leaves and debris from around their property. If done properly, this can be very effective.

AMBULANCE 994-4444 RCMP 994-5555 TOWN OF FARO 994-2728

Campfire Safety

Always make sure to keep these tips in mind when doing any sort of backyard or debris burning: - Always burn during a safe time of year, in the fall or just after green-up in the spring - Never burn under windy conditions or when conditions are hot and dry - Stay with the fire until it is completely out - Keep a hose and hand tools nearby to extinguish your fire - Avoid burning near buildings, trees or grass - Keep your fire at a controllable size - Remember to obtain a burning permit before taking on any sort of burning

.

Burning Permits are suspended in the Yukon whenever the fire danger rating is above the low level. http://www.community.gov.yk.ca/firemanagement/index.html

FARO RCMP DETACHMENT Wow, July 1st is already here! That means that we are half way through the year, 177 days ‘til Christmas, 14 days since Billy left (but he has to come back as he has only finished half the Chilkoot Trail), 7 days if you miss the girls more!, 15 days ‘til the golf tournament AND Murphy Bad Dog’s first birthday, 28 days ‘til my anniversary and 29 days ‘til I turn 50! Time is just flying by….. We have just finished painting inside Billy’s house…….and no, we do not hire out. One house is quite enough for me and I am sure that Robert and Byron feel the same way. As the house has been “refreshed” it is no longer “Billy’s house”, it is now “Byron’s house”, and any arrangements made by the former occupant ended when he moved out……..in other words, no you can’t use the garage or borrow tools ”whenever”. Byron says that he wants to be a good neighbour and will help out when he can but would prefer to be asked first. Also he doesn’t really have any tools, so this might diminish the number of requests that he gets. Byron MacLEAN is the new member in Faro. He and his family are excited to be here. They come to us via Whitehorse. His wife - Sandra, son - Keyan, niece - Charity, and his son’s fish (Robert managed to keep them alive while he was away) will be spending the next few days unpacking and getting settled. The summer months are a time when we get out to the cottage and lakes to enjoy ourselves. Remember your boat safety. Do you have all your safety equipment? Do you even know what you are required to carry with you in your boat….and no, beer is NOT of the items! Most important of all though is LIFE JACKETS/PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICES!!!!! Hopefully you look after them and make sure they are in working condition not a mouldy mass in the bottom of your boat. Take the time to ensure that they fit properly……they won’t do any good if you can’t do them up or if you slip out of them when they are done up. Yes I expect you to actually wear them and not use them as a cushion to sit on. Also make sure that EVERYONE in your boat is also wearing one and that they fit them properly. Don’t leave the shore until everyone is properly fitted and has one on! Speaking of actually wearing things……the same applies to other safety equipment, like helmets. Displaying them on your bicycle handle bars or the back of your quad doesn’t do you any good. That is unless the rocks in Faro are softer than they are everywhere else, and as I know this is not true, please wear them. Head injuries, if they do not cause death, can be life changing. The last thing you want is to be trying to put your helmet on as you are flying through the air. I have been there, airborne that is, thankfully I had my helmet on, and I can tell you trying to put something on while I was a human projectile was the furthest thing from my mine. I can tell you, that the few seconds it took me to land ungracefully with a thud, was one of the most religious periods of my life. Let’s all have a safe and fun summer! To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994-5555 or 1-867-667-5555. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted. Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This

phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Miscellaneous LOOK UP July 4 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 11:01 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere. July 4 - Juno at Jupiter. NASA’s Juno spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at Jupiter after a five year journey. Launched on August 5, 2011, Juno will be inserted into a polar orbit around the giant planet on or around July 4, 2016. From this orbit the spacecraft will study Jupiter’s atmosphere and magnetic field. Juno will remain in orbit until October 2017, when the spacecraft will be de-orbited to crash into Jupiter. July 19 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 22:57 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full

Buck Moon because the male buck deer would begin to grow their new antlers at this time of year. This moon has also been known as the Full Thunder Moon and the Full Hay Moon. July 28, 29 - Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Delta Aquarids is an average shower that can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by debris left behind by comets Marsden and Kracht. The shower runs annually from July 12 to August 23. It peaks this year on the night of July 28 and morning of July 29. The second quarter moon will block most of the fainter meteors this year but if you are patient you should still be able to catch quite a few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

Thank-you Faro! A thank you letter to community members of Faro, Yukon. The CH2M team would like to express our sincere appreciation for the hospitality that the many kind people of Faro offered us over the last five years. We are extremely grateful for the time we had to live in your town and to contribute to the remediation and closure plan of the nearby Faro Mine Complex. Faro really is the ‘the Yukon’s best kept secret’ and a beautiful place to live and play. We would like to express our gratitude to Town of Faro Mayor, council and staff for welcoming and supporting us through the duration of the project. We also thank the Liard First Nation and Ross River Dena Council for hosting us in their traditional territories, and working with us on the Faro Project. Right from the start in 2011, the CH2M team felt welcome in the Town of Faro. The sense of community in Faro was immediately apparent to us - friendly waves from everyone we met on the street, generosity in helping us find places to stay, and the many community events we were always invited to attend. We truly enjoyed participating in community events; like the Faro Golf Tournament, the Crane and Sheep Festival, and the softball tournament to name a few.
