After five years and hundreds of meals, I am stepping down as coordinator of Friendship Feasts. I would like to thank the incredible volunteers who are always happy to help by cooking a meal when I give them a call. The volunteers are the reason this program is so amazing! Thank you! Stepping in as coordinator is Lorraine Wilcox. Thank you Lorraine for taking this volunteer program into its 9th year! Friendship Feasts is a local program that has volunteers cooking meals for people going through a hardship (home from a hospital, loss of a loved one) or to give a hand when arriving home with a new baby. Please contact Lorraine at 994-3332 if you or someone you know is in need of a meal. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer (you may be asked to cook between 2 and 3 times a year) please call Lorraine to sign up. Thank you again to everyone who has volunteered and made coordinating this program such a pleasure. Kara Went IMPORTANT NUMBERS

Campfire Safety Fire prevention is a responsibility all of us share. It is important to understand safe fire practices so that everyone can enjoy Yukon's forests. The following are some tips for both residents and recreationalists that will help to prevent damage or injury from an out-of-control fire. When building your campfire, keep these things in mind: - Choose your site carefully - Prepare your campfire by removing all leaves, twigs and other flammable material from the area - Use a designated fire pit or build a ring of rocks at least five metres from structures and tents - Keep your fire under control and prevent it from sparking into surrounding bushes and tress - Never leave your campfire unattended When extinguishing your campfire: - Pour water on the fire and douse the site thoroughly - Stir the campfire until there are no embers and the ashes are cold to the touch. If necessary, douse again. During the spring and fall, many Yukoners take the opportunity to clear their property by burning dead trees, leaves and debris from around their property. If done properly, this can be very effective. Always make sure to keep these tips in mind when doing any sort of backyard or debris burning: - Always burn during a safe time of year, in the fall or just after green-up in the spring - Never burn under windy conditions or when conditions are hot and dry - Stay with the fire until it is completely out - Keep a hose and hand tools nearby to extinguish your fire - Avoid burning near buildings, trees or grass - Keep your fire at a controllable size - Remember to obtain a burning permit before taking on any sort of burning Burning Permits are suspended in the Yukon whenever the fire danger rating is above the low level. http://www.community.gov.yk.ca/firemanagement/index.html

FARO RCMP DETACHMENT Wow, it is September already! Where did the summer go? Did we even have much of a summer? I think that we may be in for a long winter; at least that is what the Farmer’s Almanac says. I have been in Faro for just over a year (Aug. 14th) and a tiny very cute Murphy Brown Dawg arrived not that long after (around Aug. 30th). While I have aged like a fine wine, Murphy Bad Dawg has grown into a mischievous hand full. I did hear someone mumble something about payback? Rob is going into his third year in Faro, bet it seems like he just got here yesterday. He is looking forward to getting the curling up and running as well as helping out with hockey. Byron has been here for a couple of months now and is settling into life in Faro. He hopes to have youth soccer up and running this winter and I am sure that he would love some help. Young Mr. MacLEAN was pretty happy about school starting up and apparently took cupcakes for the whole school! Kind of makes me want to go back to school…… Yes school has started. That means that all the “little people”, the ones that you may not be able to see easily when driving your cars, the ones who move with the lightning speed of youth, they will be walking to and from school. Keep your eyes open and your speed down. Remember it is 30 km/hr throughout town. And as with every year, the start of school means something even more important to some….it means that hunting season is well under way. We want everyone to have a safe and successful hunting season. So DON’T drink and hunt. Guns and alcohol do not mix. Please have all firearms safely away before you imbibe. Since this paragraph is about hunting, I would like to welcome our new Conservation Officer to town. Welcome Cody, he will be available to help with all our hunting questions and offences. At this time of year, in addition to going out hunting people are starting up their wood burning stoves to fight off the chill at night. I would just like to remind you that no matter how tempting it might be, the wood in the wood bins at the camp grounds is for use in the camp ground by people who have paid to be there. It is not there to take hunting because it`s easy and you are busy trying to find Bullwinkle. It is not there to ``tide you over`` until you get your winter wood in. It is not a `drive thru` wood window. Please leave the wood in the bins for the campsite users. Let us now talk about quads. I know this was addressed in a previous article, but for those of you who missed it (Matt), there has been an addition to the Motor Vehicle Act. Helmets have always been mandatory on snowmobiles but they are now mandatory on quads. So drive a quad, wear a helmet. And as I don`t like to let any opportunity pass, I will remind everyone that if you are driving your quad on the road it needs to be licenced AND insured. Stay safe out there. Karina

To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994-5555 or 1-867-667-5555. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted. Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This

phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Faro Youth Hockey, Learn-to-Skate, and Pelly River Hockey Challenge News: Fall is right around the corner and that means we are counting down the days until the ice goes in at the arena! I have a big list of information to share, so please take the time to read through it all and please let me know how you can help! 1. We need coaches! Do you want to coach hockey? Call me! We need you! These are volunteer positions. 2. We need a learn-to-skate instructor(s)! Help teach kids to skate! Please call me! This is a volunteer position. 3. This is going to be my last year as volunteer coordinator of Faro Youth Hockey and Learn-to-Skate. If someone is interested in taking on this volunteer position, please contact me. I can show you the ropes this year so you are ready to take it on next year. 4. I need a full team to help with Pelly River Hockey Challenge planning/running if it is to run again this year. It has run for the last five years very successfully. I need people to step in for the following jobs: funding/sponsorship, meal coordinating, attending communities liaison. If I don't find people to step into those three positions, I am not going to take it all on myself this year. 5. Do you have used hockey gear, skates, helmets sitting around just gathering dust? Consider donating them to us! We provide gear to all youth completely free of charge for the season. We can pick up or just drop off to our house (530 Douglass Drive). 6. I have already put out a funding request to help us cover our ice time fees this year in order to help keep the fee for youth to participate at a minimum. I will let everyone know in the next few weeks if we were approved. 7. There will be a sign up day in September and hopefully the kids can be on the ice by late October. 8. Matt and I are looking for some other helpers to assist us with going through all of the gear and tossing out the items that are too worn out, organization of the other gear, and building shelving. Let us know if you are interested in assisting!

Thanks everyone! Please email me at kara_went@hotmail.com, message me on FB, or call 994-3114 to let me know how you can help make this year great for the kids again!

A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth's partial shadow, or penumbra. During this type of eclipse the Moon will darken slightly but not completely. The September equinox occurs at 14:21 UTC. The Sun will shine directly on the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This is also the first day of fall (autumnal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of spring (vernal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere. September 28 - Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest western elongation of 17.9 degrees from the Sun. MEXICAN PICKLED CARROTS 3 cups white vinegar 1 cup water 3/4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons pickling salt or fine sea salt (not iodized) 3 pounds small spring carrots, sliced on the diagonal 1/8 inch thick 1 medium red onion, sliced 1/8 inch thick 2 fresh jalapeĂąos, sliced into rings 1/8 inch thick 2 teaspoons dried oregano, preferably Mexican, divided 2 teaspoons cumin seed, divided 2 large cloves garlic, halved Prepare 4 1-pint (2-cup) canning jars and lids:. Place the rack in the pot and place the jars, right side up, on the rack. Add enough water to fill and cover the jars by at least 1 inch. Cover the pot and bring to a boil; boil, covered, for 10 minutes, then turn off the heat. Keep the jars in the hot water (with the pot covered) while you prepare the recipe. Meanwhile, place the new lids in a small saucepan, cover with water and bring to a gentle simmer. Very gently simmer for 10 minutes (taking care not to boil). Turn off the heat and keep the lids in the water until ready to use. 4 Combine vinegar, water, sugar and salt in a 6- to 8-quart nonreactive pot (see Tips) and bring to a boil. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add the carrots, onion and jalapenos; return to a boil. Remove from heat and let stand 10 minutes. 5 Meanwhile, remove the sterilized jars from the water and place on a clean towel (if they're placed on a cold surface, the jars could crack). Place 1/2 teaspoon each oregano and cumin seed in each jar, along with half a garlic clove. 6 Fill the jars with the vegetables and pickling liquid to within 1/2 inch of the rim. Wipe the rims with a clean cloth. Use a lid wand (or tongs) to remove the lids from the hot water. Place lids and dry rings on the jars. Tighten until just finger-tight (won't move with gentle pressure) but don't overtighten. 7 To process the filled jars: Using a jar lifter, return jars to the pot with the warm water, placing them on the rack without touching one another or the sides of the pot. If the water does not cover the jars by 1 to 2 inches, add boiling water as needed. Cover the pot and bring to a boil; boil 10 minutes, then turn off the heat, uncover the pot and leave the jars in the water for 5 minutes. Use the jar lifter to transfer the jars to a towel, with some space between each jar. Let stand, without moving, for 24 hours. (If you do not want to process the jars in a boiling-water bath, you can refrigerate the pickles for up to 2 months.)

All Too often we tend to let situations slide by without taking the right action, so I’m doing that! We had a bear on the balcony of our home on Little Salmon Lake around July 18th or 19th and it tore up a chair cushion and scared the heck out of Gord & I but finally left. Due to vehicle trouble, Gord went to Whitehorse on July 26th and at about 10:30 that morning, the bear was on the balcony again, with the same result --- absolutely I want to sincerely thank the Del Van Gorder School Council, the Principal, Staff and Students, and the anonymous donor for naming the new school playground after my husband, Wolf. I am deeply touched and I know that Wolf would feel very honoured to be recognized in this way. This honour has great significance for our family as Wolf's two daughters, Shanti and Linde, attended school at Del Van Gorder. And, over the years, many school classes came to our farm for field trips. Wolf always enjoyed the students, both the young ones and the teenagers, and he could always make them laugh!

"I would like to say a special and heart-felt Thank you to the Pilch Family for making the beautiful sign for the playground. Sincerely, Glenda Eberlein"

scaring the heck out of me again. Our neighbor came over and called the RCMP for me and Rob and Bryon were there in no time. They spent over 4 hours walking the area extensively searching for the bear but to no avail. The peace of mind that their presence brought me was so wonderful and was coupled with extreme kindness and noticeable concern. We the public do take these great guys and gal for granted and as I said before, I just want everyone to know about their kindness and support as well as conveying to them just how deeply grateful I was and am.
