“what’s up yukon” !

After five years and hundreds of meals, I am stepping down as coordinator of Friendship Feasts. I would like to thank the incredible volunteers who are always happy to help by cooking a meal when I give them a call. The volunteers are the reason this program is so amazing! Thank you! Stepping in as coordinator is Lorraine Wilcox. Thank you Lorraine for taking this volunteer program into its 9th year! Friendship Feasts is a local program that has volunteers cooking meals for people going through a hardship (home from a hospital, loss of a loved one) or to give a hand when arriving home with a new baby. Please contact Lorraine at 994-3332 if you or someone you know is in need of a meal. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer (you may be asked to cook between 2 and 3 times a year) please call Lorraine to sign up. Thank you again to everyone who has volunteered and made coordinating this program such a pleasure. Kara Went

FARO RCMP DETACHMENT Well it’s that time of year when everyone wants to get out to the back country to do some hunting. During this time of year the Town of Faro regularly sees an increase of people coming to the community to take advantage of the wonderful back country. The Faro RCMP would like to remind the public that when venturing out to the back country to be aware of the following things: • • • • •

Have valid FAC and hunting licenses. As many have already seen the Faro RCMP and the local Conservation Officer’s will be conducting random check stops to ensure Wildlife Acts and Firearm laws are being adhered to. Develop a trip plan with a time of departure, return and the area that you will be hunting in. Leave this with a friend or family member so that it can be provided the local authorities in case we need to look for you. Be mindful of weapons handling. Remember all hunters are responsible for every round that is fired out of their rifle. If you are going to be on any of the local waterways please be mindful of their characteristics. Also please adhere to the capacity plates and do not over load your boats Most important is please be responsible in regards to alcohol consumption while you are hunting, wait until you are back at camp before celebrating your successful hunt.

Cpl WATSON had the privilege of helping out with Prince William and Princess Kate visiting the Yukon. Not sure what she was doing but I am sure she will fill us in once she is back. I know she mentioned she was going to maybe dress up as Miss Faro with crown and try to get a photo-op with the royalty. It’s now been a month since the children have been back to school. The Faro RCMP would like to remind people to keep to the posted speed limits and be aware of the small little children that are making their way to school. Cst MACLEAN is hoping to have his soccer program up and going for the first Tuesday in October, 2016. Also be aware that on October 14th, 2016 there will be some activity going on in behind the liquor store. Cst MACLEAN has arranged PARTY Program. This program is geared towards young people making decisions in regards to alcohol and drug use. There will be a mock motor vehicle accident where the students will be involved in. Fire Department, EMS, Nursing Station and the RCMP will be involved. The local departments will be responding to this call as if it were real. The students will get a glimpse as to what happens when the wrong choices are made. The Faro RCMP would like to invite everyone to come watch. There will be lots of lights and sirens. Cst DRAPEAU would like to let everyone know that once the ice is in place he will be putting on clinics for curling. These clinics will consist of the mechanics of delivery, strategy and sweeping. Cst DRAPEAU will also like to let people know that he will be involved with coaching hockey. It has been a couple of months since the new law in regards to ATV helmets. This is under Motor Vehicle Act and it pertains to all roadways in the Yukon. The operator of an ATV is required to wear shelmet. It’s the law so please wear your helmet. We would also like to remind people that in order to operate your ATV on any roadway (this includes shoulders of the road) that you have to have a valid driver’s license, registration and insurance. The Faro RCMP has issued numerous warnings in regards to this. If anyone is caught you are running the chance of having your ATV impounded. The same holds true to snowmobiles as well. The Faro RCMP would also like to remind that the quite hours for the Town of Faro is 11:00 pm to 7:00 am. We would like to ask people to respect those times and keep the music and parties to a minimum. The Faro RCMP has issued warning in regards to the Noise By-Law however repeat offenders will be charged criminally under the Criminal Code. The Faro RCMP has received information in regards to firearms being discharged within the Town limits. We would like to remind you that this is illegal and taken very seriously by the RCMP. We encourage folks to contact the RCMP if they hear any gunshots immediately so that we can effectively investigate these occurrences. Taking to social media such as Facebook does not help with our investigation and often hampers our ability to investigate matters, so please contact the RCMP if you hear or see anything that is potentially illegal so that we can properly investigate these matters. Well that is all now from your local RCMP. Please have a safe, fun and successful hunting season. Cst Byron MACLEAN Faro RCMP *****************************************************************************

To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 911. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted. ***************************************************************************** Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

LOOK UP October 7 - Draconids Meteor Shower. The Draconids is a minor meteor shower producing only about 10 meteors per hour. It is produced by dust grains left behind by comet 21P Giacobini-Zinner, which was first discovered in 1900. The Draconids is an unusual shower in that the best viewing is in the early evening instead of early morning like most other showers. The shower runs annually from October 6-10 and peaks this year on the the night of the 7th. The first quarter moon will block the fainter meteors in the early evening. It will set shortly after midnight leaving darker skies for observing any lingering stragglers. Best viewing will be in the early evening from a dark location far away from city lights. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Draco, but can appear anywhere in the sky. October 15 - Uranus at Opposition. The blue-green planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view Uranus. Due to its distance, the planet will only appear as a tiny blue-green dot in all but the most powerful telescopes. October 16 - Full Moon, Supermoon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 04:23 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Hunters Moon because at this time of year the leaves are falling and the game is fat and ready to hunt. This moon has also been known as the Travel Moon and the Blood Moon. This is also the first of three supermoons for 2016. The Moon will be at its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual. October 20, 21 - Orionids Meteor Shower. The Orionids is an average shower producing up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Halley, which has been known and observed since ancient times. The shower runs annually from October 2 to November 7. It peaks this year on the night of October 21 and the morning of October 22. The second quarter moon will block some of the fainter meteors this year, but the Orionids tend to be fairly bright so it could still be a good show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Orion, but can appear anywhere in the sky. October 30 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 17:38 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.
