FARO RCMP DETACHMENT We hope everyone enjoyed ringing in the New Year! January seemed to fly by and it seems that we are over the hump and longer days are in our future. Cpl. Karina WATSON is officially retired. She was presented with her retirement gift on January 27th. The gift was a water color painting created by our own local artist Katy PEELING. We would like to thank Katy for her work on the detailed piece of art that captures Faro but also Karina. Cpl. WATSON was happy surprised when she saw the back of the painting where Faro folks signed their names and provided her with positive messages for the future. Cpl. WATSON we wish you all the best to your new endeavors. RCMP is reminding locals to buckle up their seatbelts. Wearing a seat belt properly is a legal requirement for all motor vehicle drivers and passengers in Canada. You should never have more people in your car than the number of functional seat belts. Seat belts are designed to be used by one person only and doubling up significantly reduces their effectiveness. The shoulder belt should be worn across your body from the top of your shoulder, across your chest and attach to the lap belt at your waist. The belt should not be worn under your arm or across your neck, since these positions will direct the impact forces to the soft tissues of your neck or abdomen, increasing the risk of serious injury. The lap belt should be worn lowly across the hips for maximum protection. Both the lap and shoulder belts should fit snugly across your body. Children should sit in the back seat in the appropriate restraint. Children age 12 and under should always sit in the back seat as this is the safest place in the car. Front seat air bags can cause significant physical injuries to small children. Winter can be a lot of fun. We all suffered through a short cold spell in January but let’s get moving this February. The recreation department offers a full slate of activities for all ages and the area offers more than enough indoor & outdoor activities to keep us moving. Get out and get active, we’ll see you there. *****************************************************************************

To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 911. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted. ***************************************************************************** Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Miscellaneous LOOK UP February 11 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 00:33 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Snow Moon because the heaviest snows usually fell during this time of the year. Since hunting is difficult, this moon has also been known by some tribes as the Full Hunger Moon, since the harsh weather made hunting difficult. February 11 - Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth's partial shadow, or penumbra. During this type of eclipse the Moon will darken slightly but not completely. The eclipse will be visible throughout most of eastern South America, eastern Canada, the Atlantic Ocean, Europe, Africa, and western Asia. (NASA Map and Eclipse Information) February 26 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 14:59 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere. February 26 - Annular Solar Eclipse. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is too far away from the Earth to completely cover the Sun. This results in a ring of light around the darkened Moon. The Sun's corona is not visible during an annular eclipse. The path of the eclipse will begin off the coast of Chile and pass through southern Chile and southern Argentina, across the southern Atlantic Ocean, and into Angola and Congo in Africa. A partial eclipse will be visible throughout parts of southern South America and southwestern Africa.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

Mary (Louise) Ford June 5th, 1923 - January 11th, 2017

Louise passed away at Macauley Lodge at 93 years of age. She arrived in the Yukon in 1960 with her husband, Nelson, and their two sons residing in Whitehorse and Dawson City. Louise and Nelson retired to their cabin at Little Salmon Lake in 1983, where she remained until 2010, then moved to Whitehorse to be near her sons. But her heart always remained at Little Salmon. She is survived by her two sons, David-Smiley Ford (Shirley) and Calvin Ford (Patti); six grandchildren, Alisha (Alex), Alexander, Meghan (Terry), Kelsie (Levi), Jill (Jordan), Ted, and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial will be held at a later date in the Spring. The family would like to thank the staff at Macauley Lodge and a special thanks to Glenda Eberlein for all of her help during the end.
