FARO RCMP DETACHMENT Hello to everyone in Faro, hope everyone had a great Easter weekend. Now that Easter has come and gone we have good ol’ May Long Weekend to look forward to, and soon school will be out for the 2016/2017 year. Faroites have probably noticed an increased presence on the Robert Campbell Highway by yours truly the Faro RCMP. First off I would like to say thanks to everyone in town for the way they conduct themselves while driving on the highway. I can personally say that I have been out multiple times and came across local people driving on the highway using safe speeds. It’s safe to say that if you wave at your local RCMP you are from Faro!. So I just wanted to take a moment and express my gratitude to all you fine folks. However, you also probably noticed that the RCMP has had vehicle’s pulled over conducting checkstops and this was to enforce speeds on the Robert Campbell. It’s getting warm out and the local wildlife will be crossing the highway soon enough, so I would ask that if you have family coming in from out of town, please ask them to keep to the posted speed limits as well, as we would not want anyone hitting wildlife and endangering themselves or other motorists. This brings me to the issue of our anticipated bear season coming up. If you see a bear within the Town of Faro please call the Conservation Office first at 994-2862. If they are not available then please contact the RCMP. All in all everything is great in Faro, the days are getting longer and the temperatures are getting warmer, so I hope everyone gets outside and enjoy this wonderful weather! Please do keep in mind that if you are driving your ATV please wear your helmets and have your ATV registered and insured. Cst Byron MACLEAN, Faro RCMP

***Cst DRAPEAU has been planning a community barbeque for National Police week that will be held on May 18th, 2017 at the CRIC from 12:00-1:30pm. National Police Week began in 1970 as a way for police to connect with their community and increase awareness about the service they provide. Community policing is at the heart of Police Week, as it’s an opportunity for police and community members to get to know each other. Additionally, for our special Canada 150 edition of Police Week, we want you to meet detachment members, members for whom police work is not just a job, but a calling and a passion. ****************************************************************************

To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 911. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted. ***************************************************************************** Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Miscellaneous RHUBARB PUDDING CAKE

LOOK UP May 6, 7 - Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Eta Aquarids is an above average shower, capable of producing up to 60 . meteors per hour at its peak. Most of the activity is seen in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the rate can reach about 30 meteors per . hour. It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet Halley, which has known and observed since ancient times. The shower runs annually from April 19 to May 28. It peaks this year on the night of May 6 and the morning of the May 7. The waxing gibbous moon will block out many of the fainter meteors this year. But if you are patient, you should be able to catch quite a few of the brighter ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky. May 10 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 21:42 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Flower Moon because this was the time of year when spring flowers appeared in abundance. This moon has also been known as the Full Corn Planting Moon and the Milk Moon. May 17 - Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest western elongation of 25.8 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. Look for the planet low in the eastern sky just before sunrise. May 25 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 19:45 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

2 cups chopped rhubarb 1 3/4 cup sugar, divided 3 tablespoons butter, softened 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1 cup sifted flour 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2/3 cup boiling water

Cover the bottom of an 8 or 9 inch square pan with fruit. (I prefer an 8 inch or 9 inch square glass baking dish. You could also use a deep dish glass pie plate.) Mix 3/4 cup sugar, butter, baking powder, salt, extracts, milk and flour together (add a little more milk if it is too thick to pour); pour over fruit. Mix remaining sugar and cornstarch; sprinkle over mixture in pan. Pour boiling water over the top. ( I know this sounds strange, but trust me, it works to create a pudding around the rhubarb in the bottom of the pan.) Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Yield: 9 servings.

You can see that the sugar topping creates a glaze on the top of the cake, something like a creme brulee, as well as creating the pudding at the bottom. Serve warm in a bowl with ice cream, or let it cool a bit, slice and invert on your plate to show off the pudding. You may also substitute a gluten free flour blend, I bake an extra ten minutes. .
