dee accessing his QR Code status on his cellphone before he could be admitted. Happily, it took him about three minutes. Secondly, the talk for the Gathering/Tethering exhibit was a mixed live and virtual presentation. Ursula Handleigh, fully masked, as were all dozen members of the audience, was on hand to explain her part of the show. Anna Heywood-Jones, who lives in Vancouver, and is currently Artist in Residence (coFood Vancouver), was visible and audible from a laptop computer next to Handleigh.

The audience, after enjoying an unobstructed wander around the room to view the five parts of the joint exhibit, seated themselves in some chairs which were carried in and placed from the room at the back of the building. Handleigh and Heywood-Jones spent the next 45 minutes or so talking about the various segments of the exhibit. The room was dominated by two items in particular. “Traces”, is a hand-woven, silk, linen, wool, and rayon multicoloured hanging, looped across most of the room’s width, shading between off-white and indigo. Heywood-Jones said she was attempting to symbolize some of her father’s life experience. On the south wall of the room there is a shelf carrying a variety of things connected to her parents that she has collected and called “Structures of Loss”. These memory bits include bits of clay, charcoal, cordage, knots, paper, photographs, plants, stones and textiles, each grouping accompanied by a card with a short description and a bit of verse. The purpose of the collection is, as described in the brief program note, an attempt “to acknowledge and reckon with the process of incremental loss.” Both artists are attempting the same thing within the framework of their individual disciplines. “Through tactile methods of remembering and creating, their collective work emerges as an

Heywood-Jones and Handleigh shared the presentation, actually and virtually ever-evolving anthology of lived experience.” Handleigh comes at the idea through the use of photography.

The second piece dominating the room is entitled “I can feel you forgetting” and deals with Handleigh’s father’s advancing

Alzheimer’s deterioration. The shelf, suspended at the height where breath would flow across it, consists “of ninety-eight photographic plates. They exist as living photographs. “Rust, cultivated through a single exhale of breath, initiates a continual state of documentation. Presented at breath’s height,

these photographs are never fixed. Taking in the air that surrounds them, iron becoming ironoxide, they bear weight as they decompose.” “In the Spaces Between Loss” is Handleigh’s other large piece, resembling nothing so much as

Sewn and assembled during a time of mourning and loss, this quilt is an embodiment of touch.” The very last, and smallest, part of the exhibit is just inside the entry way, the image of forget-me-not flower grown from seeds sent by Handleigh’s grandmother, which arrived two weeks after her death. There are brief biographical notes in the teo page program, which also includes a map of the room. Handleigh is a Tkaronto Scarborough-born artist, of Filipino mixed-ancestry, currently living and working in K’jipuktuk / Halifax, Nova Scotia. Anna Heywood-Jones is an artist and educator based in Vancouver, BC on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations. Handleigh’s practice explores questions of identity and how the role of memory, ancestral knowledge, and storytelling can be used to reconstruct archives and preserve histories. Through her work, HeywoodJones explores the complex relationship between human and botanical spheres, articulated through textile materials and processes. Her practice is also dedicated to witnessing the slow loss of her father and the growth of her infant son. n

CATARACT SURGERY A modern medical miracle

T

here are only two things you need to know if you are considering cataract surgery to prevent spending your retirement years like Mr. Magoo looking for Bugs Bunny: 1.) The procedure has a solid success rate of 87%, which are pretty good odds, and: 2.) This delicate eye operation has been around longer than the word of God. Here is the thumbnail after hours of internet research:

Ancient Babylonia Cataract surgery was first mentioned in the Babylonian code of Hammurabi 1750 BC.

Ancient Egypt Possibly the first depiction of cataract surgery in recorded history is on a statue from the fifth dynasty (2467-2457 BC).

Ancient Greece Galen, of Pergamon, 2nd century AD, a prominent Greek physician, surgeon and philosopher, performed an operation similar to modern cataract surgery.

Ancient India A form of cataract surgery, now known as “couching”, was found in ancient India and subsequently introduced to other countries by the Indian physician Sushruta (c. 6th century BCE), who described it in his work the Compendium of Sushruta or Sushruta Samhita.

Ancient China The removal of cataracts by surgery was also introduced into China from India, and flourished in the Sui (581–618 CE) and Tang dynasties (618–907 CE).

Ancient Europe The first references to cataract and its treatment in Europe are found in 29 AD in De Medicinae,

the work of the Latin encyclopedist Aulus Cornelius Celsus.

Ancient Persia The removal of the clouded lens by suction through a hollow instrument was described by the 10th-century Persian physician Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi, who attributed it to Antyllus, a 2nd-century Greek physician. The procedure “required a large incision in the eye, a hollow needle, and an assistant with an extraordinary lung capacity.”

Modern Yukon Reassured by such an impressive historical resume your diligent reporter, who was diagnosed with cataracts in Whitehorse on November 2, 2019, made a quick decision to get on the “pending list” for surgery sometime in early 2020 which, of course, was postponed indefinitely by the sudden and unexpected onset of a new viral pandemic you may have heard or read about. At the time your retired escriber (sports mostly but also other more serious subjects like history and politics), was halfway through his ski racing memoirs which had stalled at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics then stopped completely when it finally became apparent that “cataracts” was just a medical term which means “you’re going blind.” I could no longer see the letters on my various keyboards by March of 2020 as the Covid lion was beginning to roar. Since I never learned how to write by braille during my long literary journey, the unfinished Memoirs went the way of Mr. Magoo’s wife as the lights faded but didn’t go out entirely. Ironically, I could still drive because I could still see the road but was unable to see the tiny letters on my writing machines which began to resemble migratory gnats rather than proud building blocks of a long, and ignoble, literary life. So I was left in limbo waiting anxiously for a phone call from the cataract people at the hospital before my 75th birthday arrived when annual eye exams

become mandatory in the Yukon for golden geezers who need to drive to live. There was zero chance I could pass the DL eye exam when I couldn’t even read the local newspapers, a small blessing at times, or even my own feeble chicken scratches which at one time produced nearly annual journalism awards, not to mention a semi-living of sorts. I learned the hard way it’s impossible for a writer to feel right when he, or she, can’t write. Right? So, a long year later, in the summer of 2021, I got a phone call saying I had been promoted from the pending list to “active” and the dates for my left eye, the worst, was Oct. 4 with the right a month later on Nov. 1. (This is being written on Nov. 4 so I must be making a rapid recovery even though both eyes are still watering and a little blurry.) It’s true both surgeries were brief and painless which required over an hour at the hospital but only 15 minutes each in the OR (operating room) but each eye needed a month of diligent rehab and recovery, mostly self-squeezing endless eyedrops, blinking a lot and crying at dumb movies or bad jokes. And, yes, I did hear stories of patients among the unlucky 13% who did not regain full use of their eyes but the vast majority came through with flying colours, so to speak. My first comment when I walked out of Whitehorse General after the left eye with my chauffeur/son was: “It’s a miracle! I had no idea the Yukon sky was THAT blue.” When I asked the skilled eye surgeon if I could mention his name in the story I planned to write afterwards if I could still see, he said: “Why? I already know my name.” So I’ll just thank the Miracle Worker who made it possible for you to read this. The eye dude is good at what he does. “Here’s lookin’ at ya, kids.” n

Paul Rath, author of: Fishing With My Fathers, lives on the Haines Highway, where the mountains are many, and the people are few.

MEET MARLIESE: POSTMASTER OF HAINES JUNCTION When you enter the Canada Post office in Haines Junction, rest assured Marliese Whelan will greet you with a smile, even if you can’t see it under the mask.

W

helan has served as postmaster for twoand-a-half years. She does everything from mailing letters and picking up mail, to sending and receiving parcels. Born and raised in Newfoundland, where permanent jobs at the post office are scarce, Whelan learned about the job opportunity from an internal job posting. She had a telephone interview

while sitting in her car. When she was offered the job, Whelan sold everything except her sense of adventure and headed North. After a 10-day drive across the country (where she encountered elk, a gigantic herd of bison and a snow storm), Whelan arrived in Haines Junction after midnight, to start her new posting the next morning. She didn’t even know, at that point, where the office was located, but when she opened the door of her motel room to the majesty of Kluane National Park, she was captivated by the beauty of the mountains. Whelan is friendly and personable, She has met nearly every member of the Haines Junction community and even some of those living in the surrounding areas. She says the community is wonderful, inviting and scenic. Although she misses her home in

The Haines Junction Post Office PHOTOS: Paul Rath

Post Master Marliese Whelan greets customers with a smile at the Haines Junction Post Office Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, her family, friends, and the smell of the ocean, she feels blessed and privileged to live in Haines Junction. When asked if she has a message she would like to share, Whelan says that people leave a lot of things behind at her counter, including keys, sunglasses, credit cards, even a hearing aid. In future, if you’re missing something, check with the post office! Whelan has a magic drawer be-

hind her counter in the post office. The drawer, based on an idea she brought with her from Newfoundland, is stocked with stickers and pencils that celebrate Christmas, Halloween, Canada Day and other seasonal events. The goodies are for children who visit with caregivers, but are often left out of the business portion of the visit. Whelan, who dresses up on Halloween, wants to make the visit to the post office fun for children by putting the spotlight on them,

and making them feel special and important. As a child, she herself once thought the post office was a magical place where she could post and pick up letters from her pen pals. That sense of wonder and delight about how the post can help has not left her. Marliese Whelan, postmaster of Haines Junction, is ready to help, and happy to do so. She’s a refreshing delight and a great addition to Haines Junction. n

Hugh Copland

Part 21

Hugh Copland is a geological engineer living on the South Klondike Highway. He has been collecting rocks in the Yukon for the past 38 years.

QUARRIES: GRAVEL, SAND AND OPPOSITION If you count Fred Flintstone (who was employed by Slater Rock and Gravel Company), people have used quarries since prehistoric times.

Typical gravel pit

H

ieroglyphics show Egyptian use of quarries around 2600 BCE. They used several in construction of the Great Pyramid. Stonehenge is estimated to have been constructed 5,000 years ago. The oldest known quarry in North America dates to the 1600s. It is located in Minnesota and has been used by the Lakota Nation as a source of catlinite or pipestone, a reddish-brown claystone. The rock is carved into ceremonial smoking pipes known as calumets. A quarry is defined by the American Geological Institute as “an open or surface working for the extraction of building stone.” That includes everything from sand to blocks of rocks weighing several tonnes. In the Yukon, most quarries are commonly known as gravel pits. Gravel is a general description for rock fragments ranging in size from pebbles to cobbles. Gravel pits are legislated by the Quarry Regulations of the Lands Act. They apply to the extraction of limestone, granite, slate, mar-

In 2019 it is reported that production was worth two billion dollars. The Government of Yukon collects a $0.25 per cubic metre royalty on leased private operations. In the Yukon the amount produced every year varies depending whether major projects like Whistle Bend or Alaska Highway widening are underway. Thanks to the last glaciation 20,000 years ago, the southern

Yukon has ample gravel and sand deposits. The best sources are those of glacio-fluvial origin. That means gravels laid down in rivers running off melting glaciers. Glaciers are powerful agents of erosion and transport of rock when they are advancing. When a glacier is melting and retreating, the eroded material is left behind and deposited. Large amounts of sand, gravel and boulders collectively known as drift accumulate. This material is further reworked by the water from the melting ice. It washes away the fine clay and silt and moves the gravel around. If you have ever

been at the toe of a glacier you see piles of various-sized material with many channels of silty streams running through it in a braided pattern. During continental glaciation, everything occurred on a grander scale then what we see in today’s alpine glaciers. During the height of retreat, meltwater channels were the size of large rivers. Evidence

of these former channels can be seen in numerous places. The low area just west of Copper Ridge in Whitehorse in which McIntyre Creek runs, was a major meltwater channel. Cowley Lake and Cowley Creek are the remnants of another. At times during retreat of the continental glaciers cont’d on page 14 ...

Quarries: Gravel, sand and opposition ... cont’d from page 12

Pit source material

Glacio-fluvial deposit

the process would stall and large amounts of drift would accumulate in these areas producing a sizeable gravel resource. In the Klondike area and other areas that missed the last glaciation, gravel is not as plentiful. The three to five-million-year-old White Channel Gravels, are a good source of material around Dawson, as are the dredge tailings. Along the Dempster Highway quarries are located in areas where the rock is naturally weathered and broken, making it easier to

extract. Having sources of gravel close to markets is ideal. Transportation costs can range up to one dollar per cubic metre for every kilometre. That is about $10 per kilometre for your average-sized dump truck. Locating pits close to urban areas makes economic sense, but frequently nearby residents oppose them. The Quarry Regulations require a 30-metre buffer from highways and water bodies and a minimum of 100 metres from residential areas.

Municipalities have the authority to require a larger buffer to minimize adverse effects from the operation. Noise and dust are the most common issues. During processing and stockpiling, portable crushing and screening plants move into a pit for a number of days. Limited daily operational hours are put in place. Wide vegetation strips around the pit filter dust, reduce noise, and provide visual barriers. In some areas of Canada washing of gravel is common, which leads to bigger concerns. Ontario artist Sarah Harmer’s film, Escarpment Blues, documents her fight against expansion of quarries on the Niagara Escarpment. In addition to sand and gravel, Yukon quarries produce other commodities. Riprap is the term for large pieces of broken rock used for erosion protection. Along the South Access in Whitehorse by the river is local granitic riprap. In Dawson, a quarry east of the airport has been utilized. There is a sandstone pit west of Whitehorse, the red rock is broken and screened to gravel size for use in landscaping. There is a quarry used for clay near Stewart Crossing. Rock that breaks with flat surfaces is termed flagstone. There are many examples of flagstone used for pathways, patios, fireplaces and fences around the territory. Check along the Millennial Trail between the Visitor Information Centre and the Old Firehall for the beautiful flagstone fence made of local granitic rocks. Next time you drive by “another boring gravel pit,” give some thought to the large number of products quarries produce, that we all use. n

NO JOB IS TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL FOR JACOBS INDUSTRIES Yukon-based welding and machinery company Jacobs Industries has been in business for nearly 80 years

Felix and Scott together have 25 years o f p ow e r f u l ex p e r i e n c e selling over 1000 properties.

ob Jacobs has many memories of his father. Edmund Jacobs, who died in 2007 aged 91, founded Jacobs Industries after arriving in Whitehorse from Edmonton in 1943, the same year his son Bob was born. In addition to being the first ever civilian to drive on the Alaska Highway, Edmund Jacobs was once a popular Whitehorse mayor and holds a spot in the Yukon Transportation Hall of Fame. Now, he is remembered by many for his unwavering work ethic and willingness to help anyone with anything. His son Bob, though, also remembers Edmund for his incredibly detailed memory when recounting moments from his own life. “I just remember dad would tell stories,” Bob Jacobs said. “I thought there was no way anyone could remember that kind of detail from when they were 18, 20 years old.” When Edmund Jacobs passed away, Bob Jacobs inherited his father’s welding and machinery company. He had worked there on and off since his teen years, and even when he pursued a career in firefighting, he still found himself helping out with the company often, especially when his father’s health began to deteriorate.

“I found myself working there after school and during the summers when I was in my teens,” said Jacobs. “I worked there full-time until around 1988, then I oved to the fire department fulltime but I was still an executive and director of the company.” Jacobs Industries is still a family-run business, with Jacobs’ son, daughter and son-in-law all handling various roles within the company. Jacobs’ brothers had all also worked at the business at some point or another before their passing. The company is currently located at 4269 4th Avenue in Whitehorse, with agents also in Dawson City, Yukon; Inuvik, NWT and Atlin, BC. Being in the role of president since 2007, Jacobs has overseen lots of the company’s growth. “It definitely keeps me on my toes,” he said, noting that his role these days involves more management and he doesn’t do so much physical labour like he used to. Jacobs Industries’ claim to fame is that no job is too big or too small for the company to handle. The Jacobs Industries team, typically consisting of 12 to 15 people, regularly handles everything from kitchen and household appliance repairs to work with heavy machinery and even equipment manufacturing and sales. After so many decades in business, it’s not often that Jacobs comes across a job unlike anything he’s done before, but he still enjoys a good challenge on occasion. “There are still things that are a challenge and not something we’ve done in the past,” he said. “We can usually apply some of our experience to parts of any job, though.” One of the company’s most impressive and well-known jobs cont’d on page 21 ...

Meet Baxter! Baxter is a 2-year-old, male, Pointer mix. He is a friendly guy who can be shy in new situations however once he is comfortable, he is a sweet and loving pup. He is medium-sized with a shorter coat so may need extra protection in the winter. He would benefit from moderate regular exercise. He would do well with older children, and we are still learning how he is with other dogs but it seems that he would do better without another male dog. It is unknown how he is with cats. If you are interested in adopting Baxter, please fill out an online application below. If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards him.

Got Puppies…? Did you know that If you surrender all the pups to YARN, we’ll raise the pups, pay for all their care and veterinary costs, find them homes using a responsible adoption process – and spay your mama dog for free and give her back. We are trying to reduce the future over’PUP’ulation in the North, by adopting to family’s that will spay & neuter. Each female dog that is not spayed could produce up to 67,000 descendants in her lifetime. Unwanted dogs - suffer.

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

HOW ARE THINGS UNDER THE HOOD OF YOUR CAR?

on December

Have you had a look under your hood, how are your fluid levels, what about your belts and hoses. Most owners manuals show you where to check fluids at, if you have to add any fluids make sure they are the ones for your car. The belts and hoses are sometimes a little harder to check, if you are unable to check them or have any questions, take your car to your mechanic so they can have a look at it for you.

No job is too big or too small for Jacobs Industries ... cont’d from page 16 to date was their role in the creation of the largest weathervane in the world—the DC-3 plane that can be seen in the parking lot of the Yukon Transportation Museum. Edmund Jacobs was still operating the company when this job was done, but Bob Jacobs remembers it well. The plane itself had already had a long and history in the Yukon, and famed Yukon pilot Bob Cameron, who didn’t want to see the plane end up as scrap metal, asked Bob Jacobs to bring to his father the idea of mounting it on a pedestal to be displayed for Yukoners to see. It was mounted outside the airport in 1981. Like his son, Edmund Jacobs had a penchant for rising up to any challenge. He and the others involved in the project were told the feat would be impossible, but this didn’t stop them. Edmund Jacobs was very knowledgeable on both metals and aircrafts, and brought forward the idea of making the plane move with the wind to keep it from getting damaged by it. In doing so, he helped the Yukon set a world record which it maintains to this day. “I think it’s still in the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest weathervane in the world,” said Bob Jacobs. While Jacobs Industries continues to grow as a company and evolve to modern times, there are also difficulties that have come up within the business more recently. According to Jacobs, it’s been difficult to find qualified people to bring aboard at the company the last few years. COVID hasn’t helped, but even before that, the worsening housing situation in the territory was already preventing skilled welders and other trades people from moving up north when they’re able to find employment elsewhere. “It seems like people just don’t want to move up here,” he said. “We’ve been trying to find welders and machinists for years, and there’s a few out there available, but most of them have families and the housing situation up here makes it really hard for people to move up here and find a place to live.” Nearly 15 years after his father’s passing, Bob Jacobs is still

carrying on the legacy of his father. Edmund Jacobs was a man who wanted to help anyone who needed anything, and his expertise in metal-working made allowed him to do lots for the community. Bob Jacobs said his father’s generosity didn’t just go towards his work either—he often donated equipment and labour to various jobs like the building of two roads into Lake Labarge, as well as setting up a ski hill at Haeckel Hill, even though he didn’t ski himself. It’s easy to see what kind of person Edmund Jacobs was by the things he did for his community. In carrying on the company, Bob Jacobs and his family are able to carry on the spirit of Edmund Jacobs’ generosity and kindness. After almost 80 years, Jacobs Industries is still a family-run business with its original vision perfectly intact. “We’re still in there fixing everything that comes through the door,” said Bob Jacobs. “If people are in trouble, we like to help out.” To read more about Jacobs Industries, or to inquire about their services or look into a career with the company, visit https://www. jacobsindustries.ca/. n

VINO BOREALIS

Peter Turner Peter lives on a lake just north of Whitehorse, and says “I’m a ‘wine enthusiast’, not a ‘wine connoisseur’… I still have lots to learn!” In a past life, he was a wine merchant for the largest wine store in the U.S. Midwest, offering more than 4500 choices. He blames his life-long love of wines to growing up in Montreal with wine-loving parents, who let him start tasting at about age two.

T

he Naramata Bench, a plateau above Okanagan Lake, northeast of Penticton, emerged as a fruit growing area around 1900. The scenic Naramata Road through the bench, between Penticton and the little town of Naramata, passed a selection of my favourite vineyards. The Yukon Liquor Corp. (YLC) carries wines from a number of

vineyards along ‘The Bench,’ including Red Rooster (Merlot $19.70), Joie Farm (Think Pink Rose, $25.45), and Poplar Grove (Pinot Gris VQA $22.45). All are good examples from the region, and I can recommend all three, but, as I like to try wines unavailable at home, our destination this day was Laughing Stock Vineyards. Founded in 2003 by former stock brokers David and Cynthia Enns, their investment in a vineyard made them the “Laughing Stock” of their Bay and Wall

Street colleagues, who thought their vineyard ‘fiscally foolish, and financially unwise.’ David took courses at the University of California, Davis (maybe the best wine university in the world) and apprenticed with wine-makers in the Okanagan. Cynthia used her MBA background to become the vineyard manager. For 15 years, they developed an amazing and diverse ‘portfolio’ of wines, including memorable whites, outstanding Bordeauxstyle red blends, and a superb Syrah. The vineyard’s wines have twice been awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in B.C. Wine, the 2011 Syrah was named the Best Red Wine in Canada by Decanter World Wine Awards, and, in 2018, Laughing Stock Vineyards won the top trophy for Syrah in the Six Nation (Canada, US. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Chile) Wine Challenge. We were led through an excellent tasting by a very knowledgeable wine guide, who had us sample the Pinot Gris and ‘Amphora’ whites, as well as the reds, including the Pinot Noir, Syrah and ‘Portfolio’ Bordeaux-style blend. All were outstanding. We brought home a half-case of all of the above, plus the ‘Blind Trust’ red, which is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes. We recently celebrated a birthday by preparing cedar plank salmon on the grill, with a maple syrup, lemon juice, Dijon mustard and shallot marinade. We opened our bottle of ‘Amphora’ blend white, which is aged in 500-litre ceramic tanks (or amphora). This magical vintage, a blend of Roussanne and Viognier, is naturally fermented,

with whole grapes left covered and untouched for 90 days, the natural yeast on the grape skins precipitating the fermentation process. The result is a slightly cloudy, orange/golden-hued treat, with a bouquet of honey and pears, and a surprisingly dry taste of apricots or ripe peaches, as well as some mandarin and almond notes. The finish has a slight suggestion of caramel and sea-salt. What a surprising treat! Keep your eyes peeled for any of these wines if you are in B.C. I’m going back for more this fall! Just a quick note that the B.C. wines in this article (except the Think Pink Rose) are VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance), a certification

put in place in 1990 to identify high quality B.C. wines. To be a B.C. VQA, wines must have 100 per cent British Columbia grapes, come from one of nine geographical indications (regions), 95 per cent of grapes must come from specific region mentioned on the label, 85 per cent of grapes must come from the vintage on the label, and 85 per cent of grapes must be the stated varietal (type of grape, e.g., Merlot). So, while wines like Grey Monk or Mission Hill are VQA; non-VQA ‘B.C.’ wines like Copper Moon, while bottled in B.C., may have grapes from anywhere in the world, and may not meet the other, above criteria. Not judging, just sharing. n

Amica Marie Sturdy 1976-2021

The world lost a beautiful light on November 25, 2021. Amica came into this world in Vancouver on October 6th, the daughter of Joan Sturdy and Robert Miller, granddaughter of Marie (Dixon) and John Sturdy, and Peggy (Wilkinson) and Sherman Miller. She spent her childhood up until graduation in Salmon Arm, where she welcomed her brother, Noah, into the family when she was 10 years old. She loved her Aunties Mary Ann (“Auntie Rob”) and Pat (A.P) and cousins very much and enjoyed a close relationship with her cousin and pod-mate Laura over the years. After graduating from Salmon Arm Senior Secondary in 1994, she moved to the lower mainland, where she studied Criminology and volunteered at the John Howard Society. It was during this time that she met her lifelong friends, Shelly and Natalie. She started her career with Home Hardware in Duncan on Vancouver Island. While there, she spent time with her father and grandparents, and established enduring friendships with Jackie and Jim, and Leanna. She quickly rose to the challenges and opportunities presented to her and was transferred to Whitehorse Home Building Centre in 2011. Her talents, skills, personality, and dedication took her to the position of operations manager for 6 Home Building Centres in Western Canada. She enjoyed a wonderful relationship with her employer, Patti, and would go to the wall for her employees to support them, teach them, and encourage them along their career paths. At first in Whitehorse, she lived with friend and mentor Gaye, from whom she learned shamanic drumming, and found great adventure and beauty in journeying with a drumming group. She was able to weave these, and other

Shine on, Amica… Thank you for enriching our lives. You will always be in our hearts.

spiritual understandings she shared with her mom and friends, into the fabric of her life. Amica loved to have dinners, go on road-trips, attend concerts and special Yukon events. Her relationship with step-father Glen, and soul-sister Sarah were very meaningful to her. One of her greatest loves in life was her dog, Kodi. Amica’s life in the past 6 years has revolved around this wonderful dog. Together, they enjoyed fabulous hikes, lots of camping trips, major training lessons and great companionship. Her housemate Catheryne, and buddies Megan, Chrissy, Cathy, Tammy, Mark, Heather, Shelly, and Shawn also enjoyed many nights playing board games at home and out camping. She was a “force of nature”, as one friend put it. She was smart, kind, funny, insightful, courageous, generous, and a wonderful cook. Her pottery and crochet items are a testament to her creativity and skill. During her more recent years, she served on the Board of Special Olympics Yukon, where she enjoyed participating in many fundraising and special events. Something we will always remember about her was her down to earth straightshooting. Amica could pierce through to the essence of any given situation and call it like it was. A celebration of her life will be held in Whitehorse, at a limited in-person event. Donations in her honour will be gratefully received by Hospice Yukon or Special Olympics Yukon. As her name suggests, she was a friend and mentor to many people who will miss her greatly.

Of Latin origin, the meaning of Amica is “loved friend.”

 Gold production was 55,827 ounces; a 58 per cent increase from the same period of 2020.  Ore tonnes mined was 49 per cent higher, waste tonnes mined was 13 per cent lower, while total tonnes stacked was 72 per cent higher in the third quarter of 2021 as compared to the third quarter of 2020.

Earlier this Fall, Victoria Gold was honoured by the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and ranked #13 in the 2021 TSX30 program; a flagship initiative recognizing the top 30 performing TSX stocks over a three-year period.

“The Eagle Gold Mine achieved many production records in the third quarter of 2021 including ore mined, total material mined, ore stacked on the pad and gold produced,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. “We anticipate this gold production record will be short-lived as we expect production growth in the fourth quarter of 2021 and annual production growth into 2022 as well.” It has been an eventful season at Victoria Gold, the Eagle Gold Mine and the company’s Dublin Gulch exploration camps, while the team continues to maintain strict enforcement of COVID-19 precautions. “The health and safety of our workforce, contractors and community members remains at the forefront in all our operations,” continues McConnell. “I recognize that all the achievements realized at the Eagle Gold Mine have been made possible with the continued support and involvement of our employees, contractors, communities and business partners and I extend my sincere appreciation to each and everyone.”

VICTORIA GOLD is the owner and operator of the Eagle Gold Mine located northwest of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND). The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens. If you are a Yukoner with mining experience, Victoria Gold encourages you to become a Yukoner At Work.
