Available Light Film Festival features Canada’s finest cinema
F
or years Canadian cinema was referred to as invisible cinema for its lack of global impact and struggle to compete with Hollywood’s massive export of blockbuster films. Each year film festivals around Canada aim to disprove this notion and push the potential and visibility of Canadian cinema to other parts of the world – and more importantly to other Canadians. One such film festival is Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Every year they release their Top 10 Canadian film list. If you’ve attended the Available Light Film Festival (ALFF) in recent years it is likely you have seen films from these list. The films Mommy (Xavier Dolan), Sol (Cousineau, Avingaq), Violent (Huculiak), or my personal favourite of the ALFF2015 Tu dors Nicole (Stéphane Lafleur), were all among the films included in TIFF’s best of 2014. Thanks to the programming team at ALFF(Andrew Connors and Erin Corbett) they have again included five films from the festival circuit from the TIFF Top 10 List.

The Forbidden Room by Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson
One of the most anticipated films of ALFF 2016 is HURT, directed by Alan Zweig. Arguably the most tragic and volatile Canadian documentary this year, it is a portrait of Steve Fonyo, who in 1985 at 19 years of age, completed his run across Canada after having lost his left leg to cancer. At first denounced as a Terry Fox copycat and unable to generate many donations, it was an uphill battle until Fonyo ran past the spot where Terry Fox had been forced to stop. Suddenly, publicity picked up, donations poured in and by the time he reached the Pacific Ocean, he had raised $13 million for cancer research and was named to the Order of Canada. The next 30 years were straight downhill: petty theft, larceny, and drug addiction until the Order of Canada was rescinded in 2010. Steve Fonyo today is a mass of contradictions. Spend a year in the world of this one-time hero and see how the run has nothing — and everything — to do with his life.
Filmmaker Guy Maddin’s (My Winnipeg, The Saddest Music in the World) latest opus is The Forbidden Room. A submarine crew, a feared pack of forest bandits, a famous surgeon and a battalion of child soldiers all get more than they bargained for as they wend their way toward progressive ideas on life and love. Guy Maddin’s depraved fever dream in glorious over-saturated colour. Maddin and co-director Evan Johnson take us high into the air, around the world, and into dreamscapes, spinning tales of amnesia, captivity, deception and murder, skeleton women and vampire bananas. Playing like some glorious meeting between Italo Calvino, Sergei Eisenstein and a perverted six year-old child, The Forbidden Room is Maddin’s grand ode to lost cinema.

was very pleased to read recently that the L.A. Times reported 571 million print books were sold in 2015, 17 million more than in 2014. So much for the death of paper and print books. You might think that someone who’s been writing a book review column for nearly 40 years and lives in a house with 16 (at last tally) floor to ceiling bookcases might have an instinctive bias towards real paper books as opposed to e-books. You’d be right, but maybe not as right as you’d expect. Remember when the Kindle first appeared and sales of e-books skyrocketed, prompting the chattering classes to predict the end of the printed page? By now e-books were supposed to have taken over 50 to 60 percent of the market and bookstores were supposed to be nearly as dead as video rental and record stores. There was, of course, a massive explosion in sales of e-books right after the launch of the Kindle, followed by the KOBO (B-O-O-K: get it?) and the Nook. Everyone had a new toy; they were cool, and they needed to have something to do with them. I confess that I was reading ebooks long before those appeared. I read a few on my various laptops, but really didn’t – and still don’t – find that experience at all satisfactory. I was a fairly early user of the Palm series of personal digital assistants. They were a handy combination daytimer, address book, audio recorder, mp3 player, alarm clock, timer, and even a crude camera for a reporter to have. You could even write on them, and there was an actual Bluetooth keyboard, to supplement the virtual variety, that went with the last model that I owned. It actually took about a decade for the various smart phones to duplicate all the features that these now antiquated devices offered. Palms allowed you to download and read books, imported through your computer and then transferred to SIM cards just like the ones in your digital cameras. eReader and Mobipocket were two of the popular formats and, while they weren’t elegant pro-

I did. I read Stephen King’s entire Dark Tower saga, Dan Brown’s massive thrillers, the Anita Blake and Jim Dresden urban fantasy series, the first 10 Lee Child (Jack Reacher) thrillers, and a fair amount of non-fiction, just to give you a sampling. I read in malls while my wife was shopping, in theatres while waiting for the feature to begin, in bed by the light of the Palm. The device was actually smaller than carrying a paperback book around, and if the one you were reading got boring, you could switch to another quite quickly without losing your place. So why haven’t the vastly superior e-book readers of the 21st century managed to wipe out the ink and paper variety? Why have e-book sales maxed out at about 25 percent and seem to be stuck there? I have some ideas about that, but they’ll have to wait for another column. Dan Davidson retired from 32 years of teaching in rural Yukon schools, but continues writing about life in Dawson City. aines Junction may never be the same again following the Beatles tribute shows being planned by Junction Arts and Music (JAM). JAM is hosting Britain’s Finest, a Beatles tribute band, for two rousing concerts in Haines Junction on Jan. 22 and 23, at St. Elias Convention Centre. Britain’s Finest is hailed as one of the most authentic, fullstage experiences, delivering a non-scripted, high-energy show capturing the spontaneity, charm, and wit of The Beatles. They offer remarkable note-for-note live renditions of Beatles’ classics, such as “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Twist and Shout,” “She Loves You,” “Hey Jude,” and others. Based in Hollywood, California, the cast has rapidly gained both national and international acclaim with their hauntingly accurate re-creation of all the eras in The Beatles’ history. Britain’s Finest has completed tours across United States and abroad, recently in the Philippines. Last summer, the band pressed a 45 single and in November 2015 they launched a podcast you can subscribe to. Bringing a commemoration closer to home, you may have noticed Yukon Brewing Company’s new label, “Ale You Need is Love.” This ale and the company’s other products will be available for purchase at the concerts in Haines Junction. How do I know when to get NEW TIRES? Leighann Chalykoff, Manager of Museum Services at MacBride, is happy to be offering this event. “Hosting this event at MacBride Museum is a perfect fit,” she says. “I love the way that this event ties into the Canadian Heritage Minutes, as cultural touchstones.” s While Whitehorse does have a number of museums, MacBride was chosen by SMRT Pop Ups for its close ties to Yukon history. The museum is named after Bill MacBride, who spent most of his adult life in the Canadian north recording in detail the history of the Yukon through primary and secondary sources. “MacBride Museum tells the stories of the people and events that built Canada’s Yukon from gold rush fever to the birth of Whitehorse,” says Chalykoff. “Many of the stories that we tell are from the past 125 years, so it is something that people still feel a strong connection to.” Night at the Museum takes place on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. For more information go to www.MacBrideMuseum.com.

The MacBride Museum in Whitehorse is launching a new event called Night at the Museum, set to start on Jan. 27. Contrary to the name, this event is not screening the movie Night at the Museum. But with all the fascinating things that will take place, you may very well believe that the museum is “alive.” MacBride’s Night at the Museum aims to showcase Yukon and Canadian history in an entertaining and creative format. The idea of night at the museum came from Selene Vakharia from SMRT Pop Ups. You may have heard of SMRT Pop Ups, as they have been producing other events throughout the year in Whitehorse. This is the same company which introduced the infamous Drunken Lectures event. I think it’s safe to say that any event they deliver is equally educational as it is fun. Night at the Museum is no exception. “Canadian culture is so quirky and charming that celebrating it just seems like a no brainer,” Vakharia says. “I’ve been dreaming about this event for about a year now and am quite excited that it’s happening.” The inspiration for night at the museum came from the minutelong educational videos called Canadian Heritage Minutes. These were short segments showcased on Canadian TV channels during

As a salad-dressing enhancer: In a food processor or blender, mix ¼ cup tahini (sesame seed paste), two cloves of garlic, the juice of one lemon, ¼ cup nutritional yeast, 2 Tbsp. olive oil, a sprinkle of salt and pepper and 4 Tbsp. of warm water. Recipe yields about one cup of dressing. Add more salt or nutritional yeast as needed (always taste first!). As a kale-chip seasoner: After you’ve massaged your kale pieces with some olive oil until they’re perfectly coated, sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of nutritional yeast mixed with some salt and pepper. Toss to coat. Roast in an oven at 400 F for 20 minutes or until crisped up. As a protein: Assemble this tasty protein and add to your favorite salad or grain bowl. Start with about 1 ½ cups cooked chickpeas (a 15-oz can will work). In a small bowl, mix 2 Tsp. miso paste, 2 Tbsp. broth or water and 1 Tsp. soy sauce or Tamari. In a skillet, drizzle a little olive oil and cook chickpeas at medium-high heat until they start to brown. Add miso sauce and cook until the liquid evaporates completely. Take chickpeas off the heat and stir in a couple of teaspoons of nutritional yeast and a sprinkle of garlic powder. These chickpeas are best eaten right away as they start to lose moisture after a while (recipe adapted from Thug Kitchen: Party Grub). As a breakfast condiment: Two of my favourite ways to feature nutritional yeast for breakfast are on toast with mashed avocado and sea salt, and sprinkled into scrambled eggs.

Nutritional Yeast: Put it on popcorn. Do it. Do it now. in most natural-food stores. In Whitehorse, both Riverside Grocery and Farmer Robert’s stock it in a few varieties. My personal favourite is the Engevita brand of powdered nutritional yeast, which has a slightly stronger flavour than the flaked variety. And for those who are wondering, it’s gluten-free. I’m not going to give the predictable spiel and say that nutritional yeast will take the place of cheese in recipes. While it does add a rich and slightly nutty flavour to things, those who eat cheese regularly will be the first to say that nutritional yeast doesn’t measure up – which is why you will not see a “vegan mac and cheez” variation in my list of suggested recipes that use nutritional yeast. My personal philosophy when it comes to using trendy and healthy ingredients is to find recipes for it to “star” in on its own, instead of trying to substitute it where it doesn’t belong. With that being said, here are a few of my favourite ways to use nutritional yeast: As a popcorn topping: Once you’ve popped your corn and dressed it up real good with butter (or your oil of choice), sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of nutritional yeast over the popcorn and

ou may not be familiar - or comfortable - with eating nutritional yeast, but there’s a variety that’s ideal for health-conscious foodies who want nutritional punch nicely packaged in an easyto-use ingredient. Nutritional yeast has become fairly commonplace in popular vegan and vegetarian blogs and websites such as Oh She Glows, Thug Kitchen and Buzzfeed – so much so that someone gave it the nickname “nooch” (I’m still undecided whether this nickname makes it sound more or less appealing, but I’ll let others judge for themselves.) For those who aren’t on the nooch-wagon yet, here’s a little background information that might settle your stomach. The yeast is first grown on molasses, then it is killed with heat and harvested. The end product will look like golden fish-food flakes or a lightyellow powder. It’s a deactivated form of yeast, so it won’t leaven your stomach like it does bread. Nor does it get frothy when you combine it with liquid. For many vegetarians and vegans, it is a well-known staple for re-creating a “cheesy” flavour in dishes – but it’s the protein, fibre and mineral benefits that make it a nutritional powerhouse. The value of it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. When it’s fortified, nutritional yeast can be supplemented with Vitamin B12 and with higher levels of iron - minerals that can be lacking in meatless diets. It’s unfortified version will still have some iron and anywhere from 35 to 100 per cent of your daily value for Vitamins B1 and B2. Simply put, there are a lot of nutritional benefits in one generous sprinkle. This trendy treat can be found

About the Contender: “I wish I had more time to read books! In the last few years I have made it a priority to read Canadian books. I have always been interested and really enjoyed storytelling. I have been known to tell a few myself!”

Why He’s Betting On It: “Through Black Spruce won the coveted Giller Prize for Canadian fiction in 2008. I chose it because of its themes of the bush, the outside, and loss. It is a dark horse of a novel. I think the story resonates with Yukoners in that it explores the North and its love-hate fascination with the South.”

T
hree of the country’s best storytellers will soon descend on Whitehorse for the Northern Lights Writers’ Conference. The conference features Terry Fallis, author of Best Laid Plans; Douglas Gibson, editor and publisher of luminaries such as Alice Munro; and hometown hero Ivan Coyote. The theme is The Storytellers. Douglas Gibson wasn’t always a storyteller by trade. If you had told him six years ago he would be a professional storyteller he
wouldn’t have believed you. But a chance encounter at a literary festival convinced him to perform stories about the authors he has worked with. Two books and more than 100 performances later, Gibson now travels across the country telling tales of Robertson Davies (“man of letters, oracle and ugly duckling”), W.O. Mitchell (“character and creator of characters”) and Alice Munro (“not bad short story writer”). His latest role is similar to his former role as publisher: he gets
to boast about great Canadian authors. However the shift was a large and sometimes difficult one. “The screen is still blank every day. It doesn’t care what you did before.” Like Gibson, Terry Fallis did not become a storyteller until later in life. He trained as an engineer and ran his own communications firm. He helped clients shape their own stories, but a love of books and language drew him to write stories of his own. Especially funny stories.
“It was hard to find books that made me laugh,” Fallis says. Writing humour is particularly difficult, he says, because unlike film or theatre, “all you have are black letters on a white page.” But he’s particularly good at it. He has twice won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour – in 2015 and 2008. Fallis relishes his new life as a professional storyteller. “I love the whole world it has opened up.” Fallis is a popular speaker, with more than 100 speaking engagements each year. He is also at work on his sixth book. Ivan Coyote, on the other hand, has worked as a professional storyteller for more than 20 years. “I knew right away there was something about it that fit for me,” Coyote says. “I could feel it in my stage bones.” Coyote has become renowned for speaking and writing on the themes of gender identity and sexuality. With six collections of short stories, one novel and countless performances to their credit, Coyote is, as The Globe and Mail described, “a natural-born storyteller.” So what makes for a great storyteller? According to Ivan, “it’s a combination of belonging on the stage without being arrogant, a surety in your words, a
love of being there, and a respect for the crowd…” Great storytellers can be found in all walks of life. Coyote’s favourites include authors Joseph Boyden, Richard Van Camp and singer Joni Mitchell. Come see these celebrated writers present at the Northern Lights Writers’ Conference on Jan. 23 and 24 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre. They may inspire you to put pen to paper or to take a mic in hand and start telling stories of your own. They get a solid workout in the fall when we split the majority of our firewood, but all winter long they are used for making kindling as well splitting the rest of the wood. For some reason we have gotten into the habit of leaving the axe outside either stuck in the chopping block or leaning against the wall in the wood-shed. be severe and often require hospitalization or at least stitches to close the laceration. Don’t let anyone stand out in front of the direction of the swing. A brittle wooden handle – or even one of the newer fiberglass handles – can shatter hitting the frozen piece you are trying split. If you swing an axe like I do you will have the occasional overreach on the swing and the head is beyond the piece being split with the handle right under the head, making contact with the firewood piece. This impact on the handle is especially serious with a frozen, brittle axe handle and can actually shatter a fiberglass handle. Two ways to minimize damage to the axe include keeping the axe inside the house where it stays in an unfrozen state and wrapping the top 4” of the handle (up against the bottom of the head) with cardboard or foam about ½” thick and taping over it with duct, hockey or adhesive tape. Neither will prevent the occasional overreach on the swing, but it cushions the blow and saves damaging the handle. If you do find the head is loose due to drying, just put the axe head-down in a bucket with enough water to completely immerse the head. Leave it for a few days and the wood will rehydrate and swell to a tight fit in the head. The head will have powdery rust on it after the water immersion
Smarten up, sharpen up and if that bothers you, this can be removed with a wire brush. Ideally, the axe-head should be wiped with an oily rag on occasion to remove and prevent rust. The edge on an axe-head is sharpened with an axe-file to deal with normal wear and tear and the dulling effect of all that chopping. A seriously damaged axe-head with larger than usual nicks can also be filed enough to remove the nicks and be sharp again. The axe is held in a vice or laid across your knee with the edge facing away from you and the file is moved outward on the head from the thicker part out to the edge. Axe-files work very well and it does not take very long to get the axe back into shape for the next splitting session. Use a sheath (even homemade) to protect the edge on any axe that travels with you in your truck, boat or ATV.
