Available Light Industry features film workshops during the Available Light Film Festival

by Darren Susin

What’s Inside

T

his year marks the 14th anniversary of the Available Light Film Festival. Each year, the festival seems to grow and attract greater talent from a variety of places. This year also has a substantial amount of filmmaking workshops, some free and others requiring tickets. The festival’s keynote address will be from Dylan Marchetti, chief creative officer of Amplify Releasing, an independent film distribution company based in New York and Los Angeles. A long time advocate of independent film, Marchetti will discuss media distribution in the 21st century. He will also be joined by industry veterans Anita Adams and Suzanne Crocker to demystify digital distribution. Looking through the workshops, a strong theme involves digital distribution of content. As Netflix expands and Amazon continues to produce its own awardwinning shows, digital distribution will continue to be a topic of discussion among filmmakers. It’s no secret that filmmakers are ignoring traditional methods of release in favour of online distribution, and these workshops will doubtless provide substantial evidence of the continued dominance of digital distribution. On Feb. 7 aspiring composers can head to the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre from noon to 1 p.m. for a workshop with Jesse Zubot, who will share his knowledge of composing and working with a composer, having worked on such films as Koneline and the Pursuit

Alan Zweig will be conducting a Documentary Master Class at the Yukon Arts Studio Saturday Feb 13th 10:00am of Happiness. Feb. 9 will be an opportunity to see local Whitehorse filmmakers pitch their ideas to a panel of industry experts and guest panelists. The successful pitch will receive $5,000 in production support. As music distribution shifts and streaming technology takes off, local musicians will want to sit in on the workshop with Gavin

Gardiner, of the band The Wooden Sky, on marketing music in a digital marketplace. Browsing the workshops that require a ticket or ALFF pass, the highlights include the One-onOne and Buzz Groups Networking Event held on Sunday, Feb. 7 and Skeleton Crewing & Cinematography on Feb. 10. The One-on-One and Buzz Groups Networking Event will see over a dozen industry professionals come together at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre Multipurpose room to host 20 minute meetings with filmmakers pitching project ideas. Pre-registration is required for this event, as it is sure to fill up quickly. Skeleton Crewing and Cinematography features directors Fiona Rayner and Damien Gillis, who will share their experience of working on the film Fractured

Land. Fractured Land follows Caleb Behn as he progresses through law school and builds awareness around the numerous potential issues involving fracking on First Nations land. For Yukon producers, this could be an extremely beneficial workshop, particularly given the remote locations that are often used for film shoots around the territory. Fractured Land is also showing on Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m. The Available Light Film Festival runs from Feb. 7 to 14. Tickets and more information can be found online at YukonFilmSociety.com/ALFF.

here are six bookcases in my study, and two of those are arranged so that I can shelve paperbacks on both sides of them. On those shelves I still have books that I bought and first read 50 years ago and, as new books enter the house, I periodically have to decide which ones I still feel I need to keep around. So, yes, I have a fondness for the printed word in physical form, as well as appreciating the convenience of the digital variety. E-readers succeed to the extent that they manage to mimic the experience of a physical book. Having pages that seem to turn rather than fading and changing like slides is a plus, for instance. Being able to highlight or underline sections is good, as is being able to move the page to one side and make a marginal note. Lots of people refer to the sterile feel of e-readers. This is true, whether you’re using a dedicated device like a Kindle, Kobo or Nook, or just using the same (but slightly different) software on a pod, pad or phone. They don’t have the tactile or olfactory sense of a book. Other things are more important to me, though. Every time you pick up a book, you are reminded of its title and who wrote it. This is not the case when you turn on your e-reader. Some versions display the title, but many don’t. With a physical book, you are always aware of how much of it you have read, and how much is left to read. Because screen counts are wildly different depending on the device and the font size you’ve chosen, that’s harder to tell with an e-book. I am currently reading Shelagh Plunkett’s The Water Here is Never Blue. The Kindle app on my iPhone tells me that I have read 10% of it and that I am at “Loc 375 of 3341,” whatever that means. Some other e-book might tell me I have about five minutes left to read in a particular chapter, but not the whole book, though a display line at the bottom of the screen might give me an indication of overall progress. With real books I have only to walk to the bookcase where a particular genre or type is stored to find the book I want to refer to. With e-books I have to recall which of the three major vendors I bought it from, and then check the library listings (either on the device itself or in the cloud) for

The mystery bookcase at Chez Davidson each one to find what I want. Because of that previously mentioned lack of constant exposure to the author’s name, this can sometimes be a challenge. Finally, for today, there’s the matter of searching in a book for something you want to check on or quote. With a real book you will probably remember pretty well how far through the book you have to go to find what you want. You also probably have a sense that it can be found on either the right or

left hand page, and roughly where on that page. E-books simply can’t duplicate that blend of visual and tactile memory. Never Too Young To Be An Old Timer

(Unless You’re Under 35) by Gabriela Sgaga

Y

ou don’t have to be a real old timer to play Oldtimers Hockey in Dawson City. Anyone from 35 years and up can play on one of the three teams in the league. “In professional hockey, 35 is pretty old,” says Brent MacDonald, president of the Oldtimers Association. “That’s where the name came from.” MacDonald, who’s been playing in the league for 16 years and is also in charge of one of the teams, the Rams, enjoys the variety of age and professions the league has. “Our oldest player is 71, and we have miners, writers, and government workers. What they all have in common is hockey,” he says. The season normally starts in December and ends in March. The late start is largely due to the weather-dependant natural ice in the arena. MacDonald points out that other teams in the Yukon and Alaska normally start their season in October wherever arenas have artificial ice. “The short season hampers preparedness for Dawson when it comes to tournaments,” says MacDonald. “It can be a challenge.” It all starts off with a draft pick. All three teams, the Diggers, the Generals and the Rams, pick their players, and then draw the name of a goalie out of a hat. Once the teams hit the ice, they play twice a week, with two games scheduled per night. In order to have enough teams to play each other, a minor hockey team

In the meantime, the players continue to play the game that they love. One of the perks of Oldtimers Hockey, says MacDonald, is the socializing afterwards. “We’re all friends,” he says. “We try to do a cook-out three times per season with each team having the chance to host and bring all kinds of wild game and fish for everyone else to enjoy. It’s good fun with a good bunch of guys.”

PHOTOS: Courtesy of the Old Timers Hockey Association

Rams waiting to join the game is included in the roster. “Playing with kids is a way to mentor them and improve their skills,” says MacDonald. “You always play better when you play up.” Tournaments in other communities in Yukon and Alaska are also part of the hockey season. “Tournaments are fun because it’s a way to celebrate hockey, see different players, and have some different competition,” MacDonald says. Dawson will be hosting a tournament on the weekend of Feb. 12. Regular games take place on Friday and Saturday, with the play-offs happening Sunday morning. There will be a banquet Saturday night. Teams from all over the Yukon and even Alaska will come to Dawson to play for the

Oldtimers Trophy, which Dawson won last year for the first time in 10 years. “A tournament is fun and more competitive,“ says MacDonald. “We need to step it up to keep the trophy in Dawson.” MacDonald is worried about the ice for the upcoming tournament. The winter has been unseasonably warm, which could affect the quality of the natural ice. MacDonald remembers in the past when tournaments had to be cancelled at the last minute due to bad ice conditions. He hopes that the Dawson City Council succeeds in their plan to get artificial ice for the arena. “That would make a definite change,” he says. “It would make for a longer hockey season, guarantee tournament weekends, and

allow more recreational activities in general.”

Bison: From the Edge of Extinction

P

eople driving down the highway may see a few bison, and never realize that this animal was at one time on the very edge of extinction. The bison made some people extremely wealthy, others kept some people from starvation, some were shot for sport from a traveling railway cars, herds were driven over cliffs simply for their tongues and the rest of the animal was left to rot. The Bison even made Bill Cody’s name famous – Buffalo Bill Cody, that is. So now if I have your interest, allow me to tell you the history of what some called buffalo, but in reality, there have never been buffalo in North America. What we’ve long called buffalo are actually bison. Maybe the bison and the water buffalo, which can be found in such places as India and Australia, were related back in the Paleozoic Era, some 300 millions of years ago, but they are two absolute different species and never the twain shall meet. So get ready as we are about to embark on a journey (not a very nice one) back to the beginning of the 1800. At the beginning of the 1800s, it has been estimated that the Bison numbered into the 60 million from the east to the western shores of North America. The herds were gathered as far as the eye could see. Fifty years later only 540 remained and only by some thoughtfulness of some conservationists of the day, these remaining bison were captured and raised in captivity. It is the most tragic history of all wildlife, and credited solely to a growing civilization, participating in the most wasteful slaughter of animals known in the world. At the beginning of the 18th century the growing population – what some might call “civilization” – was expanding westward. In the meantime the bison was an easy catch and became a staple

PHOTO: kozzi.com

Bison were once on the verge of extinction diet and was used for rugs by the expanding population. By 1820, the bison were eliminated east of Mississippi. The bison were not just hunted, but rather slaughtered. The Plains Indian tribes made a good living from the bison and from their bountiful food supply. Often the bison were killed for no other use than the hides and the meat was left to rot. The skins provided rugs, clothing and even the outer sides of the tents. Nature also took its own toll on the large bison herds. The bison were on a constant move and in the spring, when crossing the ice, the massive weight of the herds of bison would send them crashing through the ice and come spring their rotting carcasses would line the shores of the lakes and rivers. Nature, in its own cruel way, took its own share. It can be looked at in two ways. First, nature’s slaughter of bison was crude, but on the other hand, it did keep the population of bison from being too high in numbers. Keeping the number down had the function of not over-grazing their major food source: prairie grasses. BISON WERE RAILROADED INTO DISAPPEARING The Kansas Pacific Railway was laying track westward and there was a need to feed the construction workers. A man by the name of Bill Cody picked up a contract to supply the workers with bison

meat. Records show that Cody actually killed 4,280 animals in a few short months, and earned the famous name of “Buffalo Bill Cody.” As the Kansas Pacific railway made its way to the west coast, it held excursions for the rich to travel by rail across the plains and shoot the Bison for sport from the windows of the railway cars. The slaughter continued as the rail lines pushed further west and brought along with them the commercial hunters. From during December and January of 1877-78, in excess of 100,000 hides were shipped to the eastern markets. In 1882, the Northern Pacific Line shipped 200,000 hides to the eastern markets. What was a vast herd of bison totalling 60 million was now mercilessly reduced to a mere 540 animals and some taken for their tongues only. What is most shameful of this part of our history is that it is said that hardly 1,000 of the animals were actually used for food. It is the most deplorable slaughter of wildlife in North America conservation history. THE REMAINING 540 BISON Fortunately, in 1889 some thoughtful people saw the demise of the bison was at hand and placed the last 540 animals on protective farms as a breeding stock for the future. Civilization has come a long way since the 1800s. We now understand that conservation means the wise use of our natural resources. The question that begs to be answered is have we really learned a lesson? Or will air pollution become the next slaughterhouse, not only for wildlife but humans alike? Soup, sandwich and salad at The Deli PHOTOS: Els Lundgaard

T

he minute you walk into The Deli at Yukon Meat and Sausage you know you are in a special environment. The place simply smells like, well, like Europe. The shelves are stocked with delightful offerings from Germany, from Holland, from Denmark, from England. Many of the items are imported directly from overseas, but Yukon Meat and Sausage produces many of their own products such as amazing sausages, including wild game sausages. But we were here for lunch. There were a number of tables to choose from by the large and brightly lit window. We hung our jackets on the seats to save a spot and got into line to see what was on the menu this particular day. There was soup: potato bacon or borscht. On the chalkboard up high near the ceiling, we read the regular daily special, a working man’s lunch of sausage. The variety included krakauer, elk, Bavarian, buffalo, weisswurst – how exotic is that! Under glass, we could see the variety of salads: broccoli, bean, noodle, potato, orzo, pasta. All colourful and obviously fresh. There were even perogies with all

the fixings. My companion went round to the other side of the counter to find the sandwich bar where you can choose the layers, bread, meat, cheese, added condiments and vegetables. People handed over their cards to be stamped, collecting enough to eventually get a sandwich for free. It was difficult to choose from the delectable variety and it didn’t help that we kept seeing people we knew and couldn’t not stop to chat and catch up. Ultimately, though we made it to the front of the line. My companion chose the perogy special, while I had borscht with bread and a medium broccoli salad, as I just couldn’t decide between the two. We both went to the coffee corner and helped ourselves to coffee and cream, knowing we could refill our cups before we were done. My bread was fresh and delicious and the borscht, with sour cream, was perfect. It had that, I don’t know, Russian type flavour, seasoned just enough – but not so much that you couldn’t taste the big chunks of beet. My companion’s perogies tasted just as if a

Ukrainian baba had had a hand in the preparation. They melted on your tongue! The coffee, in the large mugs, was fresh and delicious and hot, an important characteristic of good coffee. Even though the restaurant part of The Deli was self-serve, our dishes and trays were picked up by a smiling member of the staff. There was much joking and kibitzing with the customers and we were delighted to discover it was someone’s birthday and everyone in the place cheered and wished the celebrant all the best. I couldn’t help checking out the retail part of the store as it was situated all around us. I picked up tea, cookies, pickles, and, of course, some dark chocolate. I even saw gourmet jelly beans. The Deli is located at 203 Hanson St. and is open Tuesday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Els Lundgaard is a Whitehorsebased writer and food lover. ukoners are no stranger to harsh winters. However, we don’t mind it as we are used to the snow and the cold and we’ve found a way to adapt ourselves to this chilly side of mother nature. For the cigar company CAO they decided to capture the essence of winter in the form of a cigar they called Wicked Winter. The label on the cigar depicts a Jack Frost-like figure with an evil grin snarling with an icy winter background behind him. If you’re living in a hot country where tobacco grows, perhaps your perception of winter is not a very positive one. This may be one of the reasons why CAO named the cigar Wicked Winter. Of course winter does have its moments when it can be very cold and dismal. I myself can attest to this having had my car go down a 40 foot hill of snow one year. But winter also has it’s beautiful moments as well. When else would you be able to see the beauty of the northern lights? Now, even though CAO has named the cigar Wicked Winter, its taste is anything but wicked. The

tobacco used is from Nicaragua, Honduras, and the United States. To go with the cigar I decided to have a glass of white spiced rum. I think the natural flavours of the spice in the rum will enhance the flavours of Wicked Winter. The first third of the cigar does have a very nice flavour. It is a little bit of a spice, but it’s not too harsh and has some subtle notes of cinnamon, which is always a nice surprise when smoking a cigar. As I continue to puff through the first third there’s also some nice hints of baking spice and a very soft pine taste. Normally, the pine taste might throw me off, but when combined with the cinnamon and the baking spice it does taste very nice. The spiced rum is a little bit different and has a lighter taste from the gold colour spiced rums. In my opinion white rums are a little bit less bold on the taste buds compared to the dark rums, but the white rum when mixed with the cigar spice does have a very nice flavour. Moving on to the second and third of the cigar. It takes on more of a spice flavour with cloves and

perhaps a little bit of jasmine and a hints of cayenne spice, but once again don’t let the description of the spices deter you, it is a very nice combination. Now if we look back to another winter of 2015 specialty cigar release by CAO, called the Stingy Scrooge, the flavours of that cigar were nothing too impressive. However, when it comes to Wicked Winter I think a lot more care has gone into the selection of tobaccos thus producing a cigar that has a very good variety of flavours that work well to complement one another. The last third of the cigar picks up some of the similar flavours of spice from the first third, but there are a few hints of sweetness. I’m not exactly sure which flavour is creating the sweetness, but it tastes very nice. Overall, whatever winter brings, this cigar from CAO will warm up your taste buds.

The 32nd Yukon Quest starts out from Fairbanks on Feb. 6

T

wenty-five mushers from around the world are attempting the 32nd Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile Sled Dog Race, the toughest sled dog race on the planet. The race starts on Feb. 6, from Fairbanks, Alaska, following the Yukon River into Whitehorse, Yukon. The purse is split among the top 10 finishers. Returning are American veterans Hugh Neff, Allen Moore, Cody Strathe, Robe Cooke and Brent

Sass, as well as Canadian veterans Rob Cooke and Ed Hopkins. Eleven out of the 25 are rookies. Dawson City, the halfway point in the race, is one of the three mandatory vet checks, and the first musher to check in there will win an ounce of gold. The teams will follow the Yukon riverbank, come up on Front Street to the checkpoint, where their bags and dogs are checked over, before heading to the West Side of the river, where

the dogs will sleep in the campground. Gaby Sgaga is the checkpoint manager. She is excited about the upcoming race. “I like the people. I like the dogs, of course, because I am a musher,” says Sgaga. “I like the camaraderie - being part of something that is bigger than yourself.” She takes running the checkpoint with visible pride. There, she works with people who come from all corners of the globe to

volunteer for the event. Last year there were 40 volunteers working the Dawson checkpoint. “I love the whole feeling of family atmosphere and bringing new people into the family,” says Sgaga. She says she got her first email for volunteer interest in October. Nine people in Dawson turned out to the checkpoint volunteers’ meeting on Jan. 20 in the Visitor’s Information Centre. This building will be transformed into

the main hub of activity while the Quest is on. Computers will be set up for race followers to track the mushers, the media will crowd the round tables brought in from Diamond Tooth Gerties’ Gambling Hall, handlers and observers will mill about, eating homemade cookies and sipping coffee and canned milk from Styrofoam cups. The volunteers will be checkcont’d on page 13...

Anna Claxton, who is the organizer of the Percy DeWolfe Memorial Race concession stand during the Yukon Quest, enters the Jan. 20 meeting and leans across the glass-covered wooden counter in the VIC, eager to solicit volunteers to her stand. The Percy DeWolfe concession proceeds will go towards that race, which takes place on March 24. The concession is known for its rich, home-made stews, soups, curries and chilis, and an array of baked goods donated by members of the Dawson community. “The hot ‘n’ sour soup - if you don’t get it quick, it’s gone!” laughs Claxton.

Say it with a Craft Project

YuKonstruct hosts a free Valentine’s Craft Night Feb. 11

M

ark your calendar: Feb. 11, between 6 and 9 p.m. is the All Ages Valentine Craft Night. This free public event is sponsored by YuKonstruct, located at 135 Industrial Road. Nominally priced kits for the special Valentine craft are available; step by step instructions for completion – and volunteers – will assist participants; and miscellaneous craft supplies are also available. If you are interested in community sharing of equipment and knowledge, the craft night is just the beginning. Every Tuesday, YuKonstruct hosts an open house from 7 to 9 p.m. You can see the space and have a quick tour. You can meet some makers with their projects. Your creative mind will burst with possibilities for gifts and unique items for your home. The concept of the “makerspace” is focused on using and learning practical skills. Participants learn through doing. Makerspace is part of our contemporary culture; a technological extension of Do It Yourself. A non profit endeavour, makerspace provides community workspace with machines, workshops and studios. YuKonstruct, our makerspace, opened its doors in September 2014. YuKonstruct houses a combination of industrial and traditional tools. The machines are expensive and not something an individual would purchase, but sharing allows anyone to learn and create. You don’t have to have prior know-

a few household sewing machines. The woodworking room is amazing. Carpentry tools enable users to build just about anything from cabinets and tables to cutting boards. The Coding Computer room has several computers and room for workshops. The Digital Fabrication Room houses a 3D laser cutter, 3D printers and a CNC router. The machines are partnered with a computer. The creator prepares the idea/plan on a computer, pushes print and the machine does the rest. I saw some amazing chess pieces created on one of the 3D printers while I was there. The list of equipment and machinery available is impressive. Ditto+ 3D Printer. Dress forms. Mig Welder. CNC milling machine. Table Saw. Jointer. Digital projector. Robotic arm. Well, you get the picture – machines for just about any project you want to complete. Shared expertise and facilities is not a new concept. YuKonstruct, however, brings the community

While YuKonstruct is the first makerspace north of 60, there are a number of other facilities worldwide. One of the first spaces, Metalab, opened its doors in 2006 in Vienna, Austria. TechShop, a chain of commercial hackerspaces opened across the United States in 2006.

YuKonstruct’s mission statement is all encompassing: YuKonstruct aims to provide access to shared space, quality tools, expertise and a collaborative environment. I recently toured the facility. There are some very cool machines available as well as more traditional stuff. The more traditional room, Craft and Textiles, houses an industrial sewing machine and

Jarvis Street Saloon hosts a Bowie Party by Darren Susin

E

veryone from your mom to your niece’s best friend was/is probably a fan of Bowie. When he died a few weeks ago, my Facebook feed was just a stream of David Bowie songs, remembrances and YouTube links from such a varied group of people that it didn’t take long to realize his reach. While Bowie pioneered a variety of things within music, what interests me most is Bowie’s financial intelligence. In 1997, at the height of Columbia House CD sales and a few years before Shawn Fanning would launch Napster onto the world, Bowie introduced Bowie Bonds. Bowie Bonds were asset-backed securities with a 10-year life span that paid nearly 8 per cent annually. This was a better rate than the U.S. Treasury bonds at the time. As security, Bowie gave up 10 years of royalties from record sales, commercial use, and licensing in films from his first 25 albums. In exchange, Bowie got $55 million dollars, which allowed him to diversify his assets, as well as buy back some of the publishing rights from early work that was still partially owned by an ex-partner. Prudential Insurance purchased all the bonds almost immediately, thus leaving out any other investors. Moody’s, an agency that rates the strength or weakness of investments, gave the bonds a high rating, but did drop the rating to just above junk bond in 2004 when album sales were slumping due to online piracy. Even with the rating drop, the bonds held their value, and in 2007, the bonds finally reached maturity. No one in music had ever gone to Wall Street and brokered such a deal. That it was Bowie who did this first is not a surprise, now, given the other avenues he’s established for artists. Since Bowie Bonds were introduced, other musicians have followed suit, including James Brown, Iron Maiden and Rod Stewart. To celebrate all things Bowie, we’re putting together a show at the Jarvis Street Saloon on Feb. 6. The participating bands will cover a few Bowie songs of their choosing. Bands include Speed Control, The Pop Choir, Kitten Puppy, Unicorn Horn and more. Cover is $10, with all proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society. As a bonus, we will have David Bowie prints for sale from Vancouver-based artist Andrea Hooge. Part of the proceeds from these prints will also go to the Canadian Cancer Society. Costumes are welcome. Darren Susin is a Whitehorse-based writer, and one of the organizers of the Bowie Dance Party.

There Goes my Life by Bryce Bekar

2

016 marks one of the most significant changes in my life. Over the years my hunting partner and I have sat around for days goose hunting, destroyed our boat moose hunting and had adventures that all the money in the world could never pay for. When you talk to hunters, anglers and outdoorsmen the one thing they will say is: always take someone you trust. Things will go wrong and when they do, you want to be sure that you can take care of your partner and they can take care of you. My hunting partner has been the best I could ever ask for and I know that in the future we will head out on more adventures together, but it may be a while. Hayley is graduating this year and heading east to law school. Almost 18 years ago I was blessed with a little red headed hunting partner. When she was two we would drive around with her in the back of our car looking for ptarmigan on gravel roads that were not made for our Chrysler Neon. When she was three Grandma Debbie had made her a complete hunting get up, but she had to wear her pink rubber boots. She always jumped out of bed ready for the next trip to the goose blind. After a few hours on one trip she entertained herself by playing Barbie geese. I have yet to meet or hear of another child that plays with the dead snow geese to keep from getting bored – and I don’t hear of many people taking their three year old girls out bird hunting. As she grew up we had many more adventures and she has never said she can’t come. A few years ago on a moose-hunting trip she wasn’t feeling well and went home with Chris. As soon as she got home and realized she left me in the bush alone she started crying. My wife Heather called and told me what was going on very shortly after (it was the one trip our camp was close enough to a town to get cell service). The next

Hayley playing Barbie Geese day Heather, Hayley and Janessa drove five hours to come stay the night at our hunting camp. Hayley could not bear the fact that I was out there alone and stayed the rest of the week even though she wasn’t feeling well. She has been there for all three moose I have used my tag on in the Yukon, even though she doesn’t help with field dressing the animal, she has always been a great partner. Her new adventure to university will be a different one, but, like her, I am worried about her being out there alone. I’m sure if she makes the call I will want to jump on a plane to come help

however I can. Just like she convinced her mom to bring her back to camp. The end of a song that seems like it was written for me is coming to an end soon. Kenny Chesney wrote about a young man who thought his life was over when his girlfriend got pregnant. At 19 years old I was scared “I’m to young for this, I’m just a kid myself, how am I going to raise one. There goes my life, there goes my future, my everything, might as well kiss it all goodbye; there goes my life”. Being a young father causes you to grow up a little quicker than your friends around you.

In the song, as his daughter grows her pictures fill up the refrigerator, and again like the song I watched and as she fumbled up the stairs holding her teddy bear and he sings, “There goes my future, my everything; there goes my life.” As I blink I can replay her entire life in a moment. I never thought the last verse of the song would come so quick: “She had that Honda loaded down, with her Abercrombie clothes and 15 pairs of shoes, and his American Express. He checked the oil and slammed the hood, said, ‘You’re good to go.’ She hugged them both, and headed off to the west

coast.” As I write this I sing the words in my head with tears in my eyes. “And he cried, there goes my life; there goes my future, my everything, I love you baby, goodbye…. there goes my life.”
