arol is a declaration of love for another film era, but from a thoroughly modern perspective.” Of the near unanimously admiring reviews for Todd Hayne’s gorgeous period drama, this one from Spanish movie blogger Alberto Abuin, perfectly sums the film. Shot with a limited palette on grainy 16 mm with sets, clothing and props redolent of an Edward Hopper painting, Carol is an exquisite piece of cinematography. Just watching Cate Blanchett release a slow plume from her perfectly painted red lips was almost enough to make this lifetime nonsmoker want to take up the habit. Indeed, as Tim Robey, film critic for Britain’s Telegraph chain, observed: “Everything in this long-gestating adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel feels weighted to perfection. The film (is) a smorgasbord of edible Fifties design, which finds meaning in the smallest details.” Such authenticity is all the more remarkable given that Haynes managed to shoot Carol for just under $12 million over 34 days. But then there is much that is noteworthy about the film, starting with the novel on which it is based. Highsmith, a prolific writer, known for her psychological thrillers (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Strangers on a Train) published The Price of Salt under a pseudo-

nym because even though she was a known lesbian, she was also intensely private and uneasy with the semi-autobiographical nature of the book. It was Highsmith’s only major work that didn’t contain a murder. But her biographer, Joan Schenkar, noted that the language is stained with violent metaphors. “There’s always a bit of blood at the corner of a smile, if you smoke a cigarette, it’s going to take a bit of the skin off your lips.” The “crime” in The Price of Salt, which was reissued under Highsmith’s name as Carol, just a few years before her death in 1996, is requited lesbian love. The story, which unfolds languidly, through looks and subtleties, is about an affair between a young woman who works in a New York department store (Rooney Mara) and a wealthy socialite and moth-

er (Blanchett). The film is set in the 1950’s, an era of sexual repression and feminine oppression. Both actresses were Oscarnominees for their roles in Carol, as was the picture itself. Although the film was shut out at the 2016 Academy Awards, it has been on more than 130 Top Ten lists and earlier this month was voted the best LGBT title of all time by the British Film Institute, a charitable organization that promotes and preserves filmmaking and television in the United Kingdom. The screen version of Carol was written by Phyllis Nagy a researcher who left the New York Times in the late 80’s to focus on playwriting. She was offered the script after Highsmith’s death and accepted it primarily because she knew the novelist. But Hollywood wasn’t interested in a mainstream lesbian movie and the screenplay lay for close to 20 years. It’s a fascinating, yet depressing, note on social mores that the biggest challenge to eventually getting Carol produced wasn’t its same-sex subject matter but the fact that it featured two female leads. Gay may be the new black in cinematic circles but female performers still lack acceptance in much the same way as the LGBT community did when Highsmith’s novel was published. Year 17 sees an abundance of Yukon Films at the Festival O

n Easter weekend the ballroom of the Oddfellows Hall will be filled with hundreds of short film fans celebrating the 17th edition of the Dawson City International Short Film Festival (DCISFF) and cramming in as much as they can of the 500 hours of screen time that will fill up the days. This is the spring highlight of the programs offered by the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture. It’s three weeks away as producer Dan Sokolowski sits downstairs in the southeast corner of KIAC headquarters, planning schedules and downloading videos for the festival. It’s his tenth year in the producer’s chair. Seventeen years ago the 150 or so selections made from the 400 submissions might have arrived on video tape or on DVDs, but it’s pretty much all digital downloads now, and the process takes so long that Sokolowski and his volunteers have taken to calling this “the month of downloads.” Films were chosen over the course of several months, in five or six intense screenings attended by roughly 36 volunteers in total, though not all at the same time. The selection committee tried to take into account the variety of themes and genres, and part of the producer’s aim is to have each screening be a mix of different

styles and lengths. Most of the ten screenings will take place in the ballroom, which will be enjoying a new sound system this year. The “Cold Cuts” screening will take place at the Conﬂuence Gallery at the Yukon School of Visual Arts. A First Nations themed screening will be held at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre. The festival costs around $97,000 to stage, with about $42,000 of that coming from inkind donations, and the rest from grants, sponsorships and other donations. Aside from film screenings, the weekend will feature workshops on various aspects of film and video. The two current KIAC Artists in Residence at Macaulay House, Gail Noonan and Sam Decoste, will be workshopping animation techniques. Brianne Nord-Stewart, whose film “Beating Around the Bush” is on the program, will be on hand with the lead actress in that production to talk about some of the choices they made in shooting the film. The ballroom of the Oddfellows Hall is where most of the films are shown in Yellowknife, winning for best picture, best director and best actor. It will be shown at DCISFF. Sokolowski is pleased at the abundance of Yukon made films this year. Once there were only a few, then enough to make up a couple of screenings, and now there are so many that they’re spilling over into other screenings. There will, weather willing, for Easter weekend in early this year, be a street dance and feast once again, with music by local band, Corn, and 500 pierogies cooked by a host of volunteers. The festival will begin with a couple of longer films, “Memory Trap” and “The Grubstake” on

Thursday evening before the short films take over and run through Good Friday and the weekend to Sunday. The event will wrap up on Sunday evening with the presentation of the various awards, including the whimsical MITY (Made in the Yukon) statue which is always constructed of some combination of wood, wire and duct tape. What happens when you unexpectedly take the “scenic” route

e are all familiar with spooky Halloween stories. You know, the ones where someone is alone, in the middle of the woods, in the middle of nowhere, lots of spooky sounds, and then… well, something unexpected happens. I had my own real life version of a scary story happen, except it wasn’t at Halloween, it was in the dead of winter. Dec. 29, 2013 to be exact. At the time I was making my way from Marsh Lake to Whitehorse at around 2 in the afternoon. The weather was a surprisingly mild 3ºC. No wind, but plenty of snow from the previous day’s snowfall. As I made my way along the Alaska Highway, a thick bed of fog began to form. I know this is common when driving around areas with steep hills and mountains, however, it can still get a bit scary when driving at 80 clicks an hour on a windy road. t will not surprise many that this little planet called Earth is covered by seventy percent water. What may surprise many is that the water on this planet holds close to an estimated 17,000 different species of fish. Fish have been found in waters in altitudes of 15,000 feet and in waters 35,000 feet in depth. That sort of makes the estimated 8,600 bird species and 4,500 mammals rather insignificant. How far back do ﬁsh go? Primitive fish can be traced back to the Cambrian Period, some 600 millions of years ago. At this same period of time, the Yukon was part of an exceptionally large lake that extended from the Bering sea to the Gulf of Mexico. Just think what monstrous fish fossils lie hidden deep under the present land mass of the Yukon. Back 20 years ago I lived in a rural area that had once been the shoreline of ancient lake that was an extension of Hudson Bay. If you dug down deep enough you would come upon the white sand that once was part of the beach of that extension of Hudson Bay. Each year as I used my tiller on

the garden I would hit a big section of rock. Finally with pick and shovel I dug out the rock only to find it was a huge fossil. Loading a large part of the fossil in my truck I headed for the Ontario Museum and a friendly archaeologist to identify my find. Actually the fossil was about 250 millions of years old, and the fossils of a giant shonisauris, something that resembled a giant dolphin. The find made the front page of the local newspaper, The Packet and Times, and ever since then on my travels I carry a hammer and special chisel under the seat of my truck, always looking for ano other find. I wish I would have kept it as I could look out the window and see something older than me.

Think ﬁsh friendly Back in Ontario I loved fishing for bass and the fight they gave the fisherman. To give the fish a better chance I actually reduced the strength of the line to four pounds and therefor had a longer fight with the fish. At the time I thought this gave the bass a fighting chance but after some study I found that I was actually reducing the chance of that fish living, even though I would release it. Fighting the fish for longer periods means a buildup of lactic acid (naturally released in the fish during periods of high activity) which greatly stresses the fish. So, if you’re planning on a conservation-friendly catch, a heavier line and a quicker reel-in is the way to go. It’s 40 years of mushing on the Percy DeWolfe Trail By Dan Davidson March 9, 2016

nna Claxton and the rest of the Percy DeWolfe Race Committee were hugely relieved to be able to announce that the “really hard working, amazing, dedicated trail crew” had managed to push a trail through a total of about five miles of jumble ice, and find ways around the various open leads in the river. River conditions forced the Yukon Quest race to detour up the Fortymile and Clinton Creek Access Road to arrive in Dawson via that Top f the World Highway. This was perhaps an option for the Percy, but it would have changed the nature of the race more than the committee liked to consider. Opening the trail will allow the fortieth edition of the Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race to follow the traditional river route down to Eagle and back to Dawson when it launches at 10 a.m. on March 24. Of course, the very hard work by the volunteers still meant that it cost six times what it usually costs to make that trail, so the committee has come up with a late edition fundraising effort to help repair the bank balance. The 2016 Mail Trail Club is asking that people sign up to sponsor 40 five mile chunks of the trail. To help people decide, and to make the race more interesting, the 40 sections have been given descriptions which can be found on the link at the race’s Facebook page, a paragraph describing the terrain and some snippet of historical note. Twenty-one segments take you to Eagle half-way through the race, and the remainder bring you back to Dawson. Claxton says that interest in the race is rising more quickly now that mushers know the traditional trail will be used; however, the committee never has exact numbers until the mushers’ meeting the evening before the race. Because of the initial uncertainty about the route, the registration date of March 15 were extended

Gaetan Pierrard heads over the dyke and down to the Yukon River last year to March 18. Percy DeWolfe grew up near Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and came northwest in 1898 to find gold. He ended up being a fisherman, and then got the contract to carry the mail back and forth to Eagle in 1910. He did so until 1949, becoming known as the Iron Man of the North. He carried the mail by dog team, on horseback and by boat in all seasons. The race is a 210 mile (338 km) round trip that takes about 24 hours to complete most years, including a mandatory six hour lay-

over in Eagle and two additional hours at either Eagle or Fortymile. In recent years the event has become more than just a start and finish spectator sport by the addition on spot trackers to the sleds that enable folks at either end to follow the progress of the race online. It launches from beside Dawson’s Old Post Office, where the official mail is handed over by the Postmaster. The Ghost of Percy (bib #1) leaves at 10 a.m., just as the sun is peeking over the hill to the east of the town, and the

remaining mushers leave at two minute intervals, beginning with the mail carrier, wearing bib #2. At 3 p.m. a shorter race, the Percy Junior, departs with a mass start from the ice bridge on the Yukon River, and races to Fortymile, where the teams lay over for eight hours and return the next day. The event concludes with a banquet on the Saturday evening. This year it will be held at the Yukon Order of Pioneers Hall. The race manages to have a prize pot of $10,000 dollars and

pays out prizes down to seventh place. It is a qualifying race for both the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod, and quite a few mushers from both larger races like to enter this one as a pleasant way to finish off the racing season. From just 14 participants in 1986, the race has grown significantly to over 400 skiers. The Log Cabin Ski Society is going all out this year in celebration of this milestone anniversary. The theme, Ski Wars: May the Wax Be With You, will lure skiers outfitted in the most creative Star Wars garb from miles around. Be it storm troopers, Jedi

knights, Chewbacca or even an Ewok, there is a lot on the line for best costume. How does a weekend package to Skagway’s Upper Dewey Lake cabin including catering and a helicopter shuttle sound? And if you don’t win the prize for best costume this year, don’t fret. Sith happens. Ski conditions at Log Cabin have been great this year. There has been a good amount of snowfall in February and an ongoing, dedicated group of trail keepers continue to work on the trails. There is hope that the warming weather will not affect the condi-

tions too terribly for race day. It is important to note that race organizers have adjusted the start times to one-half hour later this year than in previous years to allow more time for border crossings. Still, it is recommended that you allow at least an extra half hour, especially if coming from Skagway, to make the start on time. Organizers say to expect lines at Fraser border crossing on way north to Log Cabin, and at the Skagway Port of Entry on way south after the race. Remember cont’d on page 11...

bout two weeks into my month in Toronto, I go with a friend to the Museum of Inuit Art, where there’s a display of photography by youth in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Inside the museum we head off in separate directions, him taking his time to look at all the intricate sculpture work, while I head straight for the photo exhibit. I eagerly look through the photographs of locals, nature scenes, buildings, and northern oddities like sewage systems built above ground to avoid permafrost, taking my time to read their descriptions. Taken by youth in Inuvik and Old Crow, they aren’t exactly the Yukon I got to know, but they feel just like it. I run to find my friend, excited to share the exhibit with him, to share a little glimpse of the part of the world I’ve been calling home. But as I walk him through the exhibit, pointing out all the really cool parts – like the sewage needing to be built above ground – he just isn’t as excited as I am. He isn’t seeing what I’m seeing. What we are both looking at is a world so far removed from the place we currently stand that it barely seems to exist. But what I’m seeing is my own knowledge that it does – that even while 2.6 million people go about their day in the streets around me, there is a secret place where moose are walking through people’s yards, where rows of chimneys spit smoke skyward, where the snow offers her innocence to the sur-

Stands out from the pack face of everything. I am looking at the photos through the spell of the Yukon. I remember a similar moment in reverse. One night last winter I went to visit my friend DJ Carlo at Lizards and brought my boyfriend. Carlo said he had something special to show me. It was a music video. It was just a point-of-view from the dash of a car driving endlessly through Toronto streets,

waiting at red lights, turning corners. But it was a totally moving experience for me. It was okay that it didn’t mean anything to my Yukoner boyfriend. How could it? To me it was so specific – those streets mean home, friends, family, becoming a woman. Carlo asked if the video made me wish I were back there. No, I said. But I was very glad to have

seen it. My response to the Yukon art show is different. It does make me want to be back there. It makes me ask, why does the Yukon seem so incomparable? And how come I can feel its fairy dust being sprinkled on me from 6,000 km away? If the grid of the city is man mapping order on to the earth, then the untamed wilds of the Yukon landscape must be chaos.

Semaschuk, Sumner and McCarthy left Whitehorse together with the three cross- country skiers Owen Munroe, Darby McIntyre, Ernest Chua, their head coach Helen Slama and mission staff Jerome McIntyre. Tuesday, March 1st was the day of the 2016 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Opening Ceremonies. Munroe and McIntyre competed March 2nd in the 5km classic technique final. Both skiers won a medal at this competition, Munroe got gold and McIntyre got silver. Skier Chua had a divisioning race in 500m and the 1km. March 3rd was supposed to be another competition day for the cross country skiers, but due to heavy rain, the 7.5km classic technique final was postponed to the following day. Friday was a big day for Team Yukon, with both the figure skaters and cross-country skiers competing. McCarthy won gold in the Ladies Level 1 and Sumner won gold in the Men’s Level 2. As for the cross country skiers, McIntyre won gold in the 7.5 km classic technique and McIntyre won bronze in the same division. Chau won gold in the 500m classic technique final. March 6th was the last day of the Special Olympics Winter Games and Team Yukon did not miss this chance to take home one final medal. Chua got silver in the 1km final cross country ski event. The team was scheduled to arrive on the afternoon of March the 6th, but after a snowstorm hit Corner Brook on the 5th, the ﬂight was delayed. The team arrived at the early afternoon on Monday, greeted by Commissioner Doug Phillips. Team Yukon won a total of 8 medals, two more than at the previous Games. Congratulations Team Yukon for the success at the 2016 Special Olympics Winter Games.

The Distinctly Northern Signs of Spring

here are several distinctly northern signs of spring. As the long-winter winds down the Yukon people enter an obvious state of outfit confusion. As you drive through town you peer out to see an eclectic mix of people waiting to cross roadways: There is a man in shorts, and sandals next to a woman wearing a Canada Goose parka, mittens and mukluks. It seems one is in denial that the season is changing while the other is just so ready to embrace warmer weather that he is willing to risk his toes! As you continue through town you notice those who love gaspowered adventure remove their sleds from the back of their trucks, and replace them with their quads. Suddenly you need sunglasses when you are driving home from work. You haven’t needed them for months and they are buried under 18 hats and 14 pairs of gloves, but they are now essential as you are blinded by that light you have been longing for. When you arrive home your house seems to be covered in tumbleweeds – rolling balls of dog fur. They creep into every corner imaginable. You swear you just cleaned that carpet, but your socks now carry an extra layer, and your $600 vacuum just cannot keep up with the fur-shedding capacity of your K9 pals! In an effort to avoid yet another trip around the house with a vacuum you head for the trails. Then, you spot it. On a sunny, south-facing hillside – a little bea-

So after you load your quad into the back of your truck, and head for town wearing either a parka or shorts, sunglasses, and a layer of dog fur, remember to wave to the glampers; welcome them as they usher us into spring! ticipants will find the first clue at the Visitor Centre. The solved clue tells the participant where to go to find the next clue. A Preserve map is provided. The hunt will take place on the front loop with the Golden or bonus clue placed on the back loop. The more adventurous will want to walk the extra kilometres to find that Golden Clue, I am sure. The event is open to all – from young-

sters to grandparents! A wonderful family event, it will add fun to your Easter weekend. After the last clue, participants make their way back to the Visitor Centre for chocolate treats. Last year’s event rivaled the June Open House with attendance at the Easter event numbering around 600. The Yukon Wildlife Preserve (Kilometre 8 or Mile 5, Takhini Hot Springs Road) is open year

Darwin loves the animal information at the Preserve. Aria loves the animals and feels lucky there is such a wonderful facility so close to home. Both Darwin and Aria remember the 2015 Egg-stravaganza. I quote Darwin: “I loved the “adrenalin rush” when I figured out the clues”. It sounded like solving the mystery was as much fun as the treats available afterward. The mission statement sums up
