new exhibition has opened at the ODD Gallery in Dawson City. Ommatida Muralis, which runs until April 16, is a new interactive installation by Winnipeg artists Chantal Dupas and Andrew John Milne. “It’s a rich experience to have a display of two, first-time collaborating artists,” says Interim Gallery Director Meg Walker. “It’s two perspectives and two art practices coming together.” Andrew John Milne is a selftaught artist with a background in mechanical, electrical and software design, contemporary dance, photography and film. In his work, Milne uses cutting edge media together with old technologies and materials, in constructing artistic, yet functional devices. Chantal Dupas is primarily a painter, although she has worked with various sculptural materials ranging from bronze to ceramics, and is now moving towards video and lab-based new media techniques. She became interested in the world of botany during a residency at Riding Mountain National Park. She recently enrolled in botany and microscopy courses, volunteered at the University of Manitoba’s Herbarium and is currently Artist-In-Residence at the

Belmonte Laboratory at the university. When Dupas had the idea to venture into new territory and create microscopic paintings from tinted cross-sections of houseplants, she approached Milne to build microscopes in order to view her scientific art. They went to the local Dollar Store and bought cheap lenses to play with. Milne then made moulds out of wax, built wooden frames and incorporated three lenses into every piece, creating something that acts and looks like a microscope, but with a distinctly old fashioned, Victorian flavour. “I’ve always been interested in optics and performance-engaging technology,” says Milne during the artist’s talk before the grand opening at the Gallery. “And I have a nostalgia for the Victorian era. It was a culture of invention and I’m drawn to that.” Meanwhile, Dupas sliced plants into one cell thick fragments, stained them with colour, then mounted them on slides to be viewed through Milne’s creations. “Colour is the communicator,” she says in her artist’s statement. Each of the three lenses offers a different experience. The tactility of the microscopes is inviting, offering the viewer accessibility

in different layers. Milne says this is why he was excited about the project, although normally he does not collaborate with other artists. He likes the idea that the displays can be approached and interpreted in many different ways, either technically, artistically, physically by touching the microscopes, or visually. “They’re all different types of art,” he says. “When you touch something, you have a relationship with it, you’re implicated. A visual experience is more removed, conceptual – you touch it remotely. You become what the technical system is in order to use them. “It’s a revolutionary action to mess with technology and subvert it. I want to critically engage technology and see what it really is.” Ommatidia Muralis is showing at the ODD Gallery until April 16, 2016. Gabriela Sgaga lives off the grid in her West Dawson cabin with her sled dogs. She enjoys mushing, skijoring and writing about everyday life in the Yukon. It’s one of those natural rhythms.” The natural phenomenon might attract up to 4,000 human visitors every year, but we’re still overwhelmingly outnumbered by the amount of birds that stop here. “Last year we had over 4,000 northern pintails one day, and often 1,500 mallards,” Cameron says. ast year was a big year,” says Scott Cameron, Environment Yukon’s Wildlife Viewing Technician. “We were up to 2,000 swans every day for a few days.” The height, he says, was April 9, when 2,200 were counted out on M’Clintock Bay. Typically that number is closer to 1,200. “And early too – usually you expect that around the third week of April or so.” It’s hard to say what this year’s seemingly early spring will bring, but apparently there were already a few swans spotted in the early days of March. “But,” Cameron says, “there’s no way to tell if they are early migrants or some who stayed for the winter.” One thing is for sure: for the month of April, M’Clintock Bay’s Swan Haven will fill with thousands and thousands of migrating birds, and Yukoners will celebrate. The annual month-long Celebration of Swans will include wildlife photography and watercolour landscape painting workshops, a bird banding demonstration, even a kitchen party in which people are invited bring instruments. On April 10 there will be a new Yukoner day with shuttles, guided walks and a hot dog roast. And in the background of all

or 20 years, Robert (Bob) Hayes was the Yukon’s wolf biologist. During those years, he studied hundreds of radio-collared wolves and conducted several long-term wolfprey studies. He is considered a world expert on moose and caribou predation by wolves and the effects of wolf control efforts on wolves and their prey. Over time, his studies led him to the conclusion that much of what governments have been doing to control wolves in the wild, including aerial hunting, just doesn’t work, and that non-lethal methods of wolf control is the future for management of this species. This led him to spend years writing his first book for public consumption, Wolves of the Yukon, a book which he self-published and has been a success in both English and German editions. “I think a biologist, especially a government biologist, has some responsibility for communicating their knowledge and perspectives to the public in a way that will make senses to people,” he said as we chatted via Skype for this article. Most of his writing up to that point had been technical in nature, the sort of dry accounts laden with technical terms that scientists write to be read by other scientists. It serves a purpose, but

the more factual material. In writing a novel, he returned to the second of these, set near the Old Crow Flats, as the inspiration for a story that takes place about 14,000 years ago. “It explores life and the challenges of survival at the end of the Ice Age. There’s a wolf story that’s interwoven with a story about people. There’s a boy and a girl and wolf, a really bad guy, and a bad brother. There are animals, lions, and all kinds of different challenges.” While it has young people among its protagonists, it’s intended to be a novel for all ages. At the end of that project he’s feeling that he’s learning how to be a good writer, but it’s a difficult process. “I’m fortunate that I have the time to do it, and the energy and interest.” Bob Hayes will be one of the mentor authors at this year’s Young Authors Conference on April 21 and 22 at F.H. he found it very limiting in terms of what could be expressed. Writing a book for general consumption was a challenging task – and one that he found difficult, but also exhilarating. “Jack London was my inspiration – mostly his northern books. I wrote a story in high school like ‘To Build a Fire,’ that I called ‘The Flickering Flame,’ but then I got into science and I was almost 51 before I started writing Wolves.” Since it came out in 2010, Hayes has given over 100 talks based on that book, in both Western Canada and Germany, where the book was printed. The proper way to view pure science, he said, referencing a quotation by Albert Einstein, is that it’s not about what can be made useful immediately, it’s about what may pay off a generation down the line. This is particularly relevant in a year when Einstein’s theoretical speculations about the existence of gravity waves – made 100 years ago – seem to have been proven correct. “I have another book, now,” he said. “I decided I wanted to try fiction, so I did that.” There’s just a touch of fiction in Wolves. There are seven little “day in the life” vignettes about wolf packs and humans, set from 20,000 years in the past to just the middle of the last century. He used them to set the context for

Do you like eating alone?

break all the rules surrounding not only what to eat but when to eat and even where. And this is true regardless of what we know about cooking or about what makes a proper meal.” And who doesn’t like to break the rules every once in awhile? One of the best parts of eating by yourself is that you can fully indulge your passion for garlic, onions, and canned fish… There’s an entire chapter to canned fish! (“Saved by Sardines, Rescued by Pasta”). This is because canned fish is not a friend-getter. I don’t believe anyone has been drawn together by the smell of Seafood Snacks, as opposed to chocolate chip cookies. Sardines, herring, anchovies… these are pleasures you enjoy in solitary, or with your dad (as he’s the only other person who likes them). I often make a variation of a recipe on page 98, “Spaghetti with Tuna and Capers.” I use a can of anchovies instead of tuna, and it’s delish! Reading this book intrigued me to find out what the people I know eat when they dine alone. I took an impromptu poll of my friends, and was surprised to see a lot of similarity to what the authors observed in male and female solo dining. The shopping habits, meal choices and amounts, and eating locations (from counter to couch to bed) of both women and men differ “in a fairly predictable way, though not entirely. There are always those pesky exceptions that make life interesting, for men

alone? And why do I make those choices? Since cooking for one is a regular occurrence for me, it took me a while to think of what makes my meals alone different from the ones I have with others. Eating a 10:00 PM dinner of garlic toast in bed when I feel like it is one obvious difference, and goes perfectly with this line on page 11: “When we eat alone we often

Lemon Bucket Orkestra play the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre on April 8 By Joanna Sharp

H

ot on the heels of their appearance at the 2016 Juno Awards, Canada’s only “Balkan - klezmer - gypsy - party - punk - super - band” is coming to Whitehorse. “Super-band” is certainly an apt description of this kaleidoscopic collective of 16 musicians, who play a gamut of instruments ranging from the accordion to the flugelhorn – and everything in between. Nominated for a Juno award for World Music Album of the Year for their album Moorka, the Lemon Bucket Orkestra will kick off

their spring tour on April 8 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre with the Return of Spring Dance. The name Lemon Bucket Orkestra actually comes from “putting out the bucket and working for lemons,” explains Mark Marczyk, one of the band’s founding members, referring to the group’s humble beginnings as buskers in Toronto. “It comes from an old Ukrainian folk song called “LimonMark Marczyk chiki,” or little lemons. In the context of the song, lemons are

slang for money.” But for them, busking was not about making money, Marczyk points out. “From the start, the most important thing was to play in the street where people could happen upon us.” Sharing music in the community, in public spaces, is a mandate that continues to shape LBO today. This, along with their passion for using music to bring people together, is what led band mem-

bers to war-torn Eastern Ukraine, an experience which has had a tremendous impact on the band and on Moorka, the band’s second full-length album. Marczyk was in Ukraine writing music when protests broke out in 2014, just before Moorka was scheduled to be recorded. When he shared his experience with his fellow band members, the band made the decision to postpone the recording, choosing instead to bring musical support to Ukraine and provide what assistance they could in what was quickly becoming a war zone. Before long, though, it was time to leave Ukraine and begin the band’s tour across Canada. “There was a weird dynamic

on tour,” recalls Marczyk. “It was the contrast between travelling across our huge, beautiful country full of diversity and people who are welcoming – and this backdrop of war… Our minds were still in Ukraine.” At the end of the tour, the band recorded Moorka. Marczyk describes the process as an “emotional explosion,” capturing in the recording the culmination of the band’s collective physical and emotional journey of the previous months. Moorka recalls the traditional sounds of Eastern Europe, featuring songs inspired by folk music the band learned by visiting villages in Romania, Ukraine, Serbia and Macedonia during their last European tour. “We recorded, listened, learned, ate, drank and just took in all the elements,” says Marczyk, recounting how they immersed themselves in the cultures and traditions in order to pick up the authentic sounds and styles. Back in Toronto, the band transposed their memories into music in order to bring the songs to life in new ways, often blurring the lines of musical genres and blending a variety of cultural styles. The result is music that people can relate to. “Maybe it’s not something they can put their finger on,” says Marczyk of LBO’s re-imagination of traditional folk songs, “but it’s a sound they remember, or a feeling, or an energy.” The Lemon Bucket Orkestra plays the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre on Friday, April 8 at 9 p.m. Joanna Sharp is a Whitehorsebased writer. The New Girlfriend is French Filmmaking at its Best by Peeter Lepson dressing. The encounter launches Claire and David on an unexpected journey as their relationship evolves, taking several, often surprising twists and turns along the way. Steve Rose of The Guardian describes The New Girlfriend in his review as a “smooth blurring of bourgeois boundaries between gay/ straight, masculine/ feminine and possibly sane/insane.” Ozon manages to find humour yet remains respectful in David’s sometimes awkward, sometimes exhilarating exploration of femininity, and as Rose points out, “Duris’s svelte good looks, in particular, have never quite been used to such disarming effect.” Romain Duris is best PHOTO: courtesy of Mongrel Media known for his performance as Xavier, the French exchange student in the films Anaïs Demoustier and Romain Duris explore friendship, love and gender fluidity in The New Girlfriend “L’Auberge Espagnole” and “Russian Dolls”. ukon Spirits launched two whiskies while I was skiing in Japan. I have not tried either yet (one of them is sold out, I hear) and in Japan, where whisky has been winning international awards since 2001, I drank whisky only once, from a 200 ml bottle of 12-year-old single malt purchased at 7-11 for 780 yen and consumed with salty snacks on the first day of après-ski near Rusutsu on Hokkaido. I did not take note of its name, for it was not a memorable whisky. On subsequent après-ski afternoons near Rusutsu we drank Glen Livet Nàdurra and Glen Morangie Quinta Ruban brought to Japan by my brother, who lives in Hong Kong. After a week we moved on to the ski resort at Furano, and there we focused on Louis Jadot 2014 Chablis purchased at 7-Eleven for 2200 yen, and enjoyed with the salty snacks to which we had become addicted. Once or twice we ordered warmed sake at dinner to accompany our seafood hot pot and smoked hake, but I’m not a big fan of warmed sake so I stuck to the excellent Hokkaido beer. Then, one night in Furano, we dined at Kumagera, a restaurant famous for its local fare including deer, mallard duck and fresh cheese, and for its sake, which the proprietor brews himself. Until this point, we had found the variety of sake available on 7-Eleven and supermarket shelves so bewildering we hadn’t dared

to venture. But at Kumagera our server brought three giant bottles to the table, each quite different in character, each best served cold, and poured brimming glasses so expertly that the surface tension created a convex meniscus that kept the liquid in the glass until you tried to lift it. We lowered our heads and slurped, delicately, and then we each ordered again, comparing colour and acidity and sweetness from glass to glass. From that moment I was hooked. Sake is wine brewed from rice, water and kōji, (Aspergillus oryzae), a fungus that converts starches into sugars and amino acids. There are a few terms good to know when selecting a sake, as I learned. “Daiginjo” means the rice has been polished so that less than 50% of the original grain remains, giving the sake a more fragrant flavour. Top quality sakes are always “daiginjo”. “Junmai” means the sake is made solely from rice, water and koji, with no added alcohol. So, “junmai daiginjo” sake is the best of the best. “Junmai ginjo” is darned good too—made with only rice, water and koji, and the rice milled to more than 40% (that is, only 60% of the grain remains). I was pleased to discover the two sakes currently available in the Yukon are both “junmai ginjo”. “Yoshi” Premium Sake is brewed by the 450-year-old Yoshinogawa brewery in the province of Niigata, famous for its rice. Junmai Ginjo “Bizen”, from

Sake and goma-ae: Japan calling

Spinach Goma-ae Adapted from japancentre.com INGREDIENTS 1 lb. (454 gr.) fresh spinach 4 Tbsp (60 mL) sesame seeds (divided) 2 Tbsp (30 mL) cooking sake 1 ½ Tbsp (22.5 mL) soy sauce 1 Tbsp (30 mL) sugar (optional) *(I tried with sugar and without. It’s better with.) METHOD • Wash spinach thoroughly and blanch in a large pot of boiling, salted water for 1-2 minutes or until it has turned a rich green in colour. Have a big bowl of ice-cold water ready. Drain spinach in a colander and plunge spinach, colander and all, into cold water. When spinach has cooled completely cold, drain and lightly squeeze with your hands to remove excess water. Roughly chop and set aside. • Toast sesame seeds over medium heat in a dry frying pan. Cool, then grind 3 tablespoons in a blender or with a mortar and pestle until powdery. Add the optional sugar and mix well. • Add soy sauce and sake to the ground sesame seeds and whisk until combined. Toss sauce and spinach together and serve with remaining toasted sesame seeds sprinkled over top.

the Okayama district, is made by ToshimoriShuzo Co. Ltd, which revived omachi, the heirloom rice variety with which its sake is made, in 1982. Of the two sakes, Yoshi has a smoother mouth-feel, a flavour that hints at citrus and marzipan and a nice clean finish. Bizen is noticeably more acid, burning pleasantly in the throat on the way down. Both are best served cold, and go equally well with goma-ae. A note on goma-ae. 7-Eleven in Japan is the traveller’s friend— during our first week we often ate breakfast, lunch and dinner from this marvellous general store, home to the vital ATM, always equipped with a bathroom, and where you can buy everything from sushi to pickled cuttlefish to marmalade to skin lotion. But you can’t buy much in the vegetable line. For the first week in Japan I did not eat a vegetable, and craved goma-ae. Since coming home I’ve made it three times.

BARBECUE SEASON IS COMING

When you need an extra boost, there are herbs and foods you can turn to for help. Ginger is warming for those with chills or loose phlegm. It also acts wonderfully to keep nausea at bay if you are finding your flu is settling in your stomach. Oregano oil while not the tastiest of treats definitely packs a powerful germ-fighting punch. Take a few drops under your tongue every couple of hours and especially after encountering a particularly germy kid, friend, or coworker. Raw honey can help keep coughing at bay in a delicious way. Have a spoonful alone or with some chopped garlic.

K

innikinnick’s Latin name, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, comes from arctos and ursi meaning bear and staphylos and uva meaning bunch of grapes. Amazing: the taste of those little grapes! I just tried something I had never tried before, but had read about several times. As it happens, I was treating a certain condition I had. I always try local herbs before I go to the doctor, or I’ll go to the doctor to get a diagnosis and then decide on my own treatment. The kinnikinnick tea I brewed cleared the infection in a few days. If you are interested in trying local medicinal herbs, you might have Yukoner Beverly Gray’s book, The Boreal Herbal on your bookshelf and that is a great place to start exploring local herbs. Other books I use include The Herbalogy of North America by Alma R. Hutchens and Discovering Wild Plants by Janice J. Schofield. One sunny afternoon last week,

I went out to collect the kinnikinnick leaves and berries. They grow on our local tobogganing hill called Don’s Descent, named after my husband who discovered it, and after a ski run on Mount Sima. You’d be amazed how a kinnikinnickcovered hill is so good for sliding even if there is little snow. I think it has to do with the shiny/smooth surface of the leaves, and the way the plant, a ground cover, forms an extensive carpet on the hillside. On the hill, I brushed away the snow, which readily exposed the kinnikinnick plants and picked a handful of berries, and a bunch of branches with the evergreen leaves. Back home, now reading my books, I find I only need the leaves for their medicinal properties; however, I don’t want to discard the berries I picked. I knew they are more of a survival food than anything. If you cont’d on page 13...

Kinnikinnick... cont’d the cause of spruce brooms – those round balls of spruce needles that can be found in some spruce trees. These brooms are caused by a fungus that lives on the leaves of kinnikinnick. Chrysomyxa arctostaphyli is a fungus that has a lifecycle that depends on kinnikinnick and spruce. The fungus produces purpley brown spots that seem to

Two spruce blooms u have tried them, they are dry and mealy tasting and have hard seeds. In those herbal books, there are several suggestions on how to make the berries more palatable. I decided to just grind them with my mortar and pestle. And, indeed, I was surprised how that enhanced the taste, which became quite sweet and fruity. I made sure that I crushed the seeds. This gave the berry paste a gritty texture, but it wasn’t unpleasant anymore. For pure delight, I still prefer the bottom of the bell-shaped flowers of kinnikinnick for a honey treat, to be picked in early spring. Look for them at the end of April. An interesting fact about kinnikinnick is its relationship in the Yukon to spruce trees. More specifically, a fungus on Kinnikinnick is

be present on the leaves of all kinnikinnick plants. I will check this summer, but so far I haven’t seen kinnikinnick plants without this fungus. I looked for spruce brooms the remainder of the week. I found that here in the Mendenhall Subdivision, there are often a few spruce brooms per acre in a spruce forest. Sometimes the tree and the broom appear dead, suggesting that the fungus kills the tree, or that the fungus affects an already dying tree. I do know of two very large brooms in the top of trees that appear very alive and healthy. One such broom is on the top of a tree in my backyard and sometimes I will see a squirrel peeking out his head: the perfect squirrel penthouse. anada was part of the British Empire, so when war was declared by Great Britain on August 4, 1914, Canada, too, joined the the conflict. There was a tremendous upswing of patriotic fervour. The vast American influx during of the Klondike gold rush had been largely replaced by a more settled British population, eager to step forward in support of “King and Empire.” Within days, a register had been placed in the administration building in Dawson City and it was quickly filled with the names of volunteers. Many men didn’t wait for an enlistment campaign. By boat, and on foot, they left the Klondike to enlist. One man walked 400 miles to Whitehorse, but when he reached the Outside, he was rejected for having flat feet. Another man, a Mountie, was so eager to enlist that he deserted his post. The train was stopped at Carcross and he was dragged off and returned to duty. He later made it overseas and was decorated for bravery. Within weeks several men had reached recruitment centres and were quickly sent overseas. Some lied about their age; students added a year or two to meet the requirements, while others subtracted them to avoid rejection for being too old. Two men traveled by dog team from Old Crow to Fort Yukon, and then up the Yukon River to Dawson City. Others trickled in from

On June 8, 1916, 120 men posed for this photograph in Dawson City. The following day, they took passage on the Steamer Casca and sailed off to war outlying areas – Atlin, Kluane, Carmacks and Mayo – to join up. Inquiries even reached Dawson City from Alaska requesting information on how to enlist. The exodus continued for four years. Some left on their own,

s

others traveled in small groups, while entire companies of 50 or more joined in. By war’s end, nearly a thousand brave men and women had enlisted from a population in the Yukon of perhaps 5,000.

Commemorating the Yukon Heroes of World War I

s

The Yukon Historical & Museums Association is coordinating a series of initiatives to commemorate the First World War and explore its impact on the North. The events include a workshop on May 9, the North and First World War Conference on May 9-12 and a Dawson Study Tour on May 13-15.

Little has been written – or spoken - about the exploits of the brave Yukon men and women who volunteered to serve their country during the Great War (1914-1918), but that is about to change. From May 9 to 15, the Yukon Historical and Museums Association is sponsoring “The North and World War I,” which is a program of talks and events related to World War I. At the High Country Inn and around town, events will focus on how the North, and the Yukon in particular, were involved in the great global conflict that was supposed to end all war. The acts of Joe Boyle, Sam Steele, Martha Black and Robert Service, as well as many other less wellknown men and women will be recognized for their contributions during the war. Speakers representing several countries will participate, as well as a number of well-known Yukon historians. The Yukon Archives will unveil a new exhibit related to the Yukon and the war, and a memorial for the fallen will be held at the cenotaph. There will also be a three-day study tour to Dawson City. Frost to Frost... with Joan Norberg

Winter: A Season for Change

same kinds of vegetables. We also raise the same kinds of animals. To farm and to garden also means things are always changing. Most often on the farm change comes in the form of changing seasons and growing plants and animals. Sometimes change is in response to outside influences like market supply and demand or to a change in vision. This past winter Allan and I have been discussing our next season. Do we keep things the same, change one thing, two or more? A year ago we participated in a Holistic Farm Management workshop. The workshop taught the participants how to make decisions based on a holistic approach, judging all the factors needed instead of a reactionary decision that may or may not be a good decision. And it was very enlightening. It showed us where we both wanted to go with our farm and where we didn’t. Last year we really didn’t make

The view from Norberg’s window in winter time any changes, but kept things the same as they had been for the past few years. But this year, after having time to go through a season with the workshop in mind, we have decided to make changes on the farm. Some big and monumental, others not so big, but equally important. Because we have taken time to talk through our decisions based on our goals for the farm we feel good about the change. For example, in the past we raised meat chickens. And there was a market for these chickens, but they would need to be butchered at about the same time the market garden was producing at

it’s peak so we had a shortage of energy and time. By adding the chickens to the farm it added to the workload. By removing them from our farm we were able to focus on the gardens and produce more vegetables. When we first added the chickens initially it was a reactionary decision: people wanted chickens. When we removed them it was a holistic decision: we looked at what it cost us to raise them in time, energy and money. Then we looked at what it gave back to us and the farm. Raising chickens gave us some meat for ourselves and manure for the gardens. But

this wasn’t enough to outweigh the costs of raising them. So we stopped. And looking back it was a good decision. And, thankfully we are still going to be gardening our market gardens. So for right now I can still enjoy perusing seed catalogues and dreaming of summer. Joan Norberg and her husband Allan run Grizzly Valley Farms located along the Mayo Road. They grow an abundance of vegetables and raise pigs, chickens, and turkeys. Send her your questions at GrizzlyValleyFarms@hotmail.com.

Exploring the dating-scene in the African nation’s capital city by Elke Reinauer

PHOTO: Courtesy of Speed Dating

Linda, the speed dating organizer, at an event

“D

on’t be shy,” my friends say. It’s so easy for them to say that, they are a happily married couple, I think and take a sip of my gin tonic. I am sitting at the Warehouse, a bar in Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia, and I am waiting for speed dating to begin. Having only two more weeks to go until my visa expires, I have nothing to lose. Let’s see if I can find a nice guy, who is willing to marry me. Just joking, I am here to have this speed dating experience and write about it for the German newspaper here called the Allgemeine Zeitung. But it can’t hurt to have a look at the single men in Windhoek. Linda, the organiser leads us into the room. There are tables sat up, the lighting is dim, candles are set on each table. I sit down. Participants are coming in everyone and starts chatting. That’s what I love about the people here: they are loud. They are not shy. But I notice a lack of men; 25 women will date 13 men. “Hello everyone” the moder-

ator tries to catches the attention of the people. After two minutes it gets quiet. She explains the rules. The men are rotating, the woman remain sitting at the tables. She has a whistle, which she will use when the date starts and ends after three minutes. In front of me there is a paper with some questions like, How long have you been single? What are you looking for in your partner? and just in case the conversation gets stuck. Okay, ready, go! The first minute I spend explaining how to pronounce my name to my counterpart. Finally I write it down to have more time. He is tall and has long Rastafarian-style dreadlocks. He tells me he is a taxi driver. “Great!” I say, “I need a cabbie, I can trust.” Taking a taxi is not always safe in this country. He doesn’t seem to be happy about my reaction. Luckily, the moderator whistles. The next guy’s name is Franz. He is African and a native of the Nama People, who are an indigenous group here. A lot of the Nama People have old German names, because their ancestors had encounters with Germans.

He tells me his grandmother became pregnant from a German. Not a nice part of history, because some Germans were raping black women, but let’s not talk about these sad issues on a date. Franz is working in information technology and he can speak the Kohisanlanguage of the Nama-People, which features clicking sounds. I like that language. It makes me laugh. So for the next two minutes I try to say a word in Nama. The trick is to make the tongue–click and speak the word at the same time, I fail, but I had fun. Next is John, a guy from Los Angeles, California. He tells me he had quit his job to travel to Africa. He has already climbed up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Now he is in Namibia and wants to meet new people. Sheesh, talking nonstop can be exhausting. The next guy sits down. He is African, but he speaks German fluently. When he was young, the government of Namibia sent some kids to Eastern Germany. They grew up in boarding schools, learned German. The goal was to build a communistelite for the government. His generation is called “DDR-Kids,” some of them really struggled to get back to their own culture after the wall came down. We chat and laugh and the moderator whistles. Next: A German-Namibian who likes rockclimbing. Not for me. The noise in the room is loud, men move on. I discover that it’s pretty convenient to sit there and let men come by and talk to me. Did I find a match that evening? No, but I learned a lot about the people here. At the end of the evening I realize my most precious date of the evening are my friends, waiting for me outside – curious to hear how it went.

Richard’s Tire Tips

Proper Tire Selection

April 7, 2016

Yukon’s Best Friend: DOG CULTURE Meet our dogs, they live for us, we live for them, the Yukon would not be the Yukon without Dog Culture. Send us photos of Yukon dogs and their people!

The tire industry has come a long way from the old 7.50-16 bias ply with 2 tread options, ground grip and steering. Today there are many different tire sizes, tread patterns, speed ratings and load ratings designed to perform in a wide variety of applications, therefore selecting the proper tires for your vehicle can be quite tricky and should be selected based on what application the vehicle is subjected to on a regular basis in order achieve maximum performance. The professionals here at Integra Tire Whitehorse pride ourselves on ensuring that we offer you the best possible product for the application that you are using your vehicle for, which may explain why you are asked 20 questions by our sales team when you call or stop into our shop. We simply would like to offer you the best product to suit yours and your vehicle’s needs!

A pic of my “Yukon Special” Max, rescue dog from Mae Bachur at 9 months of age, now about 3 years old. We competed last year in the first ever PULLER Championship in Whitehorse in August, had so much fun. We also do agility together, and I just love this dog!
