The Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club’s annual Ski Swap and Winter Fair is on Oct. 15 by Meagan Deuling

T

he ski swap happens every year. I’ve never been. I don’t know why, maybe because I always wake up too late on the Saturday of the swap, and I’ve heard that it’s not worth going unless you get there early. In fact, I used Facebook and text messages to crowd-source tips for a novice navigating the ski swap, and arriving early was a top tip. Local ski-lover and gear aficionado Jeffrey Pike advised me through a Facebook message: “Go early. Really early. Like 7am early.” Hannah Zimmering, an avid cross country skier, and a person who is good at waking up early, responded to my call-out for tips with a text message which said, “Someone who is serious about the ski swap pitches a tent the night before.” She means in the parking lot of the curling club, so they’re first in line. I have terrible memories of shopping at second-hand gear sales with my mom and grandma, who passed on their love of snow sports to me. It seemed like we spent hours in church basements with boots, skis, jackets and backpacks cluttering around. I remember hunger, having to pee, being jostled by the crowd and too hot with my winter jacket on. It sounds like the ski swap is similar to this. Pike also advised, “Research prior to the event. It’s not a good time to browse.” Mike Fancie is another local who responded to my callout. Also through Facebook, he said, “Plan

showed shoppers trampling each other, he wrote, “Know what you want going in.” The GIF is hyperbolic, there’s no trampling at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club Ski Swap and Winter Fair. But it does have a reputation for reckless shoppers. In a further description of a person who is serious about the swap, Zimmering wrote, “they put up fake posters around town with the wrong date to throw off competitors and they aren’t afraid to throw elbows.” The reason the PHOTO: wikimediacommons.com swap has this reputation must be because all the good second hand gear is in one enclosed place for a short amount Go to the ski swap to get of time, and we live in Whitehorse, which has no permanent your gear for the season establishment devoted to supplying the demand for used gear. Amy O’Rourke, who is a skier ahead and stay focused. Know and snowboarder and an excellent what you need vs. what you want person to turn to for information and prioritize your search accord- on gear of any kind, touched on ingly.” this with her advice. Through text George Maratos, a person who message she wrote: “Stay calm, doesn’t spend much time skiing, focus on one area/thing you want, nonetheless offered advice. Fol- be prepared to get fed up and find lowing a Black Friday GIF which your things through the buy and

sell instead!” There are multiple buy and sell pages on Facebook. The obvious drawback to these forums is you must devote your attention to the screen until you find what you want. I think the merits of the swap is - if shoppers stay calm and courteous - it builds community. Fancie wrote, “Be nice. We all know skis are expensive, but the person in line ahead of you is your neighbour for the other 364 days of the year. Good karma goes a long way in Yukon.” It also supports the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club. A percentage of the sale’s income goes toward the club. Finally, it’s tradition. Even though I’ve never been, just knowing that it’s going on triggers my snow fever. It lasts til spring. Go to bed early on Friday, Oct. 14. Take some cash out from the bank machine (another one of Mike Fancie’s tips), write a list of the things you really need. Doors open at nine, but it sounds like there will be people lining up before then. The swap runs til noon. It takes place at the Mt. McIntyre Recreation Centre, in the Grey Room. To drop off gear: do so on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 12 and 13, between 4 and 7 pm at the Wax Room at Mt. McIntyre. For more information go to www.xcskiwhitehorse.ca/html. he school year is well and truly underway by now. There is a lot of enthusiastic, energetic and creative learning happening all over the territory. School learning can present large or small hurdles for some, though. When students are struggling in school, there are two types of plans that schools may create to help them work toward success. The information here comes from the Yukon Education Act, Yukon Education’s website and the Student Support Services Parent handbook. INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PLAN (IEP) Students with exceptional or on-going needs may have an IEP. A student’s IEP is created by a school-based team, which is made up of school administrators, teachers and other support or resource professionals. Parents are invited to be a part of the team. The team discusses the student’s learning needs, and creates the student’s plan. The IEP can follow the student throughout their schooling, even if they change schools or leave the territory. It can also help students as they transition to post-secondary education. Creating an individualized education plans helps teachers understand a student’s strengths, interests and needs. It describes education goals and identifies strategies to support the student.

These goals are adjusted and updated regularly. There are three meetings each year to review the progress being made toward the goals. Parents must be consulted during the implementation of the plan. There are two types of goals: adapted and modified – and the difference is important. They relate to the prescribed learning outcomes, which are the listed curriculum expectations for each grade or course. For example, by the end of Grade 10 Math, students will be able to understand and perform certain equations and theories. If a student’s goals are adapted, it means the student is working toward the prescribed learning outcomes for a grade or course. Things that will help these students meet their goals include changes to teaching methods, the learning environment, time demands or evaluations methods. When a student’s goals are modified, it means they are individualized, and different from the prescribed learning outcomes of a grade or course. A student who has a modified individualized learning plan may be working toward a School Completion Certificate, rather than a Graduation Certificate.

tions, including different learning materials or assistance with specific tasks, are intended to ensure the student can meet the prescribed learning outcomes for a grade or course. The Student Learning Plan is created by teachers, the learning assistance teacher, and the school counselor. Parents will be notified when a student’s plan is developed. Once the student has met the goals of this plan and is able to achieve the curriculum expectations, the plan is considered complete and does not follow the student to their next course or program. Another way to differentiate between these two types of plans: an IEP is for long term goals, while an StLP is for short term goals. Need clarification? Reach out to school teachers and administrators. Connect with them on effective ways to support students. Need more? Parent networks, school councils and organizations like Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon (LDAY) can be a great resource to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to achieve at their greatest potential.

STUDENT LEARNING PLAN (STLP) This type of plan details strategies and ongoing adaptations to support a student’s success in a course or program. The adapta-

Permanent Residency with Jessica Simon

Interview at the Embassy T

he status of one’s permanent residency quickly becomes the crux of conversation among the Yukon’s new Canadians. And it’s the crux of this column. No two people have the same story to tell. Not only are there various ways to immigrate, each person’s reason to immigrate is different. Some are poignant, others humorous, like this one. It’s my own story, or rather, my husband’s. Mike came to visit from Germany in 1987 - and didn’t go home again. You could do that in those days. A quick trip to Skagway renewed a tourist visa for another six months. Mike went three time, until the immigration officer, who lived here at the time, recognized him on Main Street and declared “Mike Simon! No more trips to Alaska!” Too bad, but not something we couldn’t fix with a quick marriage of convenience. Back then, that was a popular migration route as family applications went to the top of the stack. And, as our immigration officer told us, there’s no requirement to stay married. From Hannover, Mike applied to come to Canada, and I applied to sponsor his application. He swore he wasn’t a Communist (any more) and I swore I’d keep him off the dole. Six weeks later we got word - we had a meeting. We hastily bought an engagement ring and headed for the capital - at that time, Bonn. Not wanting to be late, we arrived

in plenty of time to find the immigration office at 119 Godesbergerallee. We followed signage to our embassy on Godesbergerstrasse. Just a typo, we thought. This looked like the right place big colonial-style building, giant maple leaf flag planted on the lawn. Wrong! “You’re lost,” said the commis-

Government of Canada, obscured by a leafy maple. Of course. A few more maples led us down an alley and through two parking lots to the door of a dark, unmarked office building. “Are you sure?” I asked. “It’s your embassy,” Mike replied. “Yeah, in your country.”

down a hallway and through a set of double doors. Just as the first one clicked shut behind us, the crafty official darted out the one ahead. We were trapped like bugs under glass. Secretaries studied us from outside the terrarium, puzzled the lock releases didn’t work. We must have looked suitably helpless. After several minutes,

Satisfied we were worthy candidates,

he shook our hands and wished us well. “Welcome to Canada, Mr. Simon.”

sionaire. “This is the ambassador’s residence,” he corrected us. “And we’re closed for lunch.” “But our appointment…” “Is on Godesbergerallee - five blocks back.” Okay we said, unaware we’d embarked on Residency Test #1 orienteering. We found Godesbergerallee and slowed to check building numbers: 113, 115, 121, 123…hey wait. Where’s 119? We held up traffic looking for it, until Mike spotted the sign,

Inside a cheery receptionist greeted us, oblivious to the challenges we’d just met. I flashed the rock on my finger. We answered the agent’s questions honestly: playing up all the magic and mystery the territory held back then. Satisfied we were worthy candidates, he shook our hands and wished us well. “Welcome to Canada, Mr. Simon.” We congratulated ourselves, not knowing that Test #2 - confined spaces - had begun. Our immigration officer led us

we were led to freedom through a side door, up a flight of steps,

along the upstairs hall, back down and into the embassy. “Sorry,” said our agent, typically Canadian. “Thanks for your patience.” “No problem. We’ll be going.” Right after we pass Test #3 - financial planning. In the parking lot, we realized we needed three one-Mark coins to leave. We probably had a thousand bucks between us, but not one one-Mark coin. Now what? We absolutely didn’t want to return to the embassy after our panic room escape. “Stay put. I’ll see what I can do,” said Mike, valiantly abandoning me. Several minutes later he’d caged enough change to earn our release. “Good job, Mike,” I said. “I swore you wouldn’t go on the dole. Welcome to Canada.” Not every story in this column is comical, but at the heart of all of them is a desire to make the Yukon home. Jessica Simon is a Whitehorsebased writer.

Yukon Birth Stories with Christina Kaiser

E

A Special Baby: Ellen’s Story

PHOTOS: Valerie Thomas

Sophie on her bike this summer

Members of the Cajun Country Revival for the Whitehorse event are (l. to r.) Joel Savoy, Nadine Landry, Cedric Watson and Stephen “Sammy” Lind

Ellen had four babies at Whitehorse General Hospital. Her births were always fast and she liked the support that she got at the hospital. In her fifth pregnancy her baby was diagnosed with spina bifida at the 20 week ultrasound. Spina bifida is a birth defect where there is incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord. “The next few months were just terrible,” Ellen says. “I had a lot of people giving me wrong information. I had so many ultrasounds and tests done on me and my baby. I was told my baby would have brain damage and I was told over and over by the maternal fetal medicine doctors that I should probably terminate this pregnancy. I knew from the start that this was not something I would do, but it was very scary and intimidating and I felt terrible. “Finally, two months before my due date a genetic counselor set me up to see someone at the spina bifida clinic at B.C. Children’s (Hospital) and that was the best thing that could have happened.” The clinic was very supportive

and provided more accurate information. Ellen met with the neurosurgeon who would later perform Sophie’s surgeries and she found him to be consistent and reassuring right from the start. This gave her so much hope along with seeing the pictures they showed her of children who were living with spina bifida. Ellen found out that while spina bifida is something that affects someone all their life, people with spina bifida live normal lives and they usually don’t have brain damage. It is a misconception that spina bifida is a mental disability, as long as it is treated properly. She also found a spina bifida forum online that helped her a lot: http://community.babycenter.com/groups/a3825/spina_bifida_kids Still, the pregnancy was a really hard time, the uncertainty of what to expect was very difficult to deal with. Ellen’s older children were eight, six, four and 18 months when the whole family, including her parents, went to Vancouver for the birth. They stayed in subcont’d on page 7...

A Special Baby: Ellen’s Story ... cont’d Newborn Sophie, before her first surgery t [Far Left] Sophie on day three of her life, being held by her older sister Anna and with her mom t

Baby Sophie is finally home! sidized housing for long term hospital stays and did fun things with the kids while they waited. The birth was fast and easy, as usual for Ellen, and baby Sophie was born on Oct. 18, 2011. “I was very relieved that she just looked like a normal baby!” Ellen says. “I was scared to meet her, because of all the things I had been told before, but once you meet your child it is all worth it.” Sophie was wrapped in something that looked like plastic wrap to protect the hole in her back and whisked was away immediately to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She had her first surgery 18 hours after she was born to close the hole in her back, which went well, but it took three days until Ellen could actually hold her. She pumped milk and finger fed Sophie and then a second surgery was needed at nine days where they put a shunt in her head to treat hydrocephalus, which affects 80 per cent of people born with spina bifida. They ended up having to stay in hospital longer because of an infection, but finally on Nov.19, Sophie came home. Ellen found that having Sophie taught her that being a strong advocate for yourself is very important. Especially when conflicting

information is given, taking time to find out what this might mean, and finding support, is vital. “I was worried when I was pregnant that Sophie would have a hard time fitting into our very active family, but everything has worked out really well,” Ellen says. “There are some specific medical needs that Sophie has, we go to Vancouver every six months to the spinal cord clinic and I feel very well supported by them. “I try to not worry about what will happen, but just take it one step at a time. We really celebrated the milestones of when she walked and this summer when she rode a bike for the first time. Sophie is a part of our family just like the other children and she just happens to have spina bifida. It does not define her, but rather is something that comes along with her. “Of all my children she is definitely the most stubborn and independent and while that can sometimes be hard to deal with I feel that she is well equipped for life. I am glad I had four children before her, because we just treat her the same as the others and we all expect the same things from her as from the other children.” Sophie is a very bright fiveyear-old with a sunshine smile and an amazing imagination. She as-

pires to become a doctor one day. Her use of vocabulary is astonishing and I feel honoured to have been served make-believe tea and treats by her! October is National Spina Bifida Awareness month. “It Can Happen to Anybody”

This year’s Poverty and Homelessness Action Week coincides with World Food Day (Oct. 16) and The International Day for the Elimination of Poverty (Oct. 17) by Meagan Deuling

“O

nce you hit homelessness your world crumbles. People don’t know that there’s people who care.” So says Kerry Nolan, who is speaking first hand. Now, she is the administrative coordinator at the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre in downtown Whitehorse. She welcomes women to the centre, chats with them over coffee while they wait for appointments. She’s been at this position since April 2015. Her contract ends in March. The position is funded by social assistance, through the Head Start program. Nolan grew up in Whitehorse in a middle class family. The biggest factor that led to her being homeless was an abusive relationship she was in. “Anything can happen. It happened to me, and all of a sudden you’re lost.” Nolan wasn’t close with her family, “I felt like I let everyone down and I didn’t want to ask for anything.” She was on the streets on and off for six months, “I had my little girl with me at the time.” Kaushee’s Place had a policy where she could stay there for one month, then she’d get a hotel room, then something would happen -- like she’d go back to an abusive partner, or an abusive partner would find her, and she’d be back at Kaushee’s. “I ended up losing my little girl because I couldn’t provide for her.” Nolan was on the street this time of year. The temperature was dropping, she was alone and cold with no one to talk to. “It needs to be addressed, people go to jail to get off the streets, or put themselves in vulnerable situations.” She ended up at the Victoria Faulkner centre, volunteering, trying to fill her days. She was more comfortable asking strangers for help than her family.

The Head Start position came up, and the centre’s women’s advocate, Diane Pétrin, told Nolan to apply for it. She got it. She has an apartment. Her daughter turns seven on October 12. She’s in Fort McMurray with Nolan’s third cousin, but Nolan says they have good phone conversations, now. This wasn’t the case before, when her daughter was in care homes.

“I wasn’t planning on leaving the relationship.” But once she did, her income and rent didn’t meet the parametres of the social assistance she was receiving. She almost lost the single unit dwelling that was provided for her. She didn’t because the women’s advocate, Diane Pétrin, went to a social assistance meeting with her to explain the situation.

assistance, “being self-sufficient will raise my self-esteem. I’ll be in charge, and won’t worry about losing my home.” She’s learned that she’s good at advocating for herself, she’s a people person. At first, she had a hard time at Victoria Faulkner because she wasn’t used to being around people. Now, sometimes she’s the only staff there when women come in, and it’s comfort-

Kerry Nolan in her office at the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre Nolan is in a secure place now, but she’s still vulnerable. She wants to stay with Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre, but she doesn’t know how the job will be funded once the social assistance funding is up in March. She almost ended up on the street again, recently, because she left a relationship that was unhealthy.

If Nolan hadn’t had the strength and knowledge about how to advocate for herself, she says, she would have slipped again. Nolan is glad she didn’t ask her family for help when she first ended up on the street; she’s glad she went through what she did. “Now I’m helping people.” She wants to get off of social

able. Sometimes, women come in just to see her. “People can relate to me, because I’ve been on the street.” The Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition gets money from United Way Yukon to hold a Poverty and Homelessness Action Week, this year it runs from October 16 - 21. “In our own community, it’s good

for people to know that there’s a lot of homelessness,” says Nolan. “It can happen to anybody. Everybody should be aware.” Since she’s started working at Victoria Faulkner, Nolan sees homelessness in a different way, “people come in and they cry. Everything goes back to being homeless.” She talks about how homelessness burdens the justice system and the health system. If there was more support in place, Nolan says, those systems could focus on other problems. From her perspective, the biggest thing Whitehorse needs to help eliminate the number of people who don’t have a place to live is affordable housing. Single unit dwellings, and hostel-style accommodations, to get people off the streets. “Low income housing should be accepted as much as any other type of housing,” she says. “We should be coming together as a city, and not shunning people because they’re homeless.” There should also be more awareness, says Nolan. She participated in the Homelessness Point-In-Time count that was conducted in Whitehorse in the spring, and that was eye-opening, “even for me.” She says people need to know about the vulnerability in the community. Nolan wants everyone in Whitehorse to get out and support the Poverty and Homelessness Awareness Week, “whether you’re homeless and vulnerable, or not. It’s in all our best interest to a have a healthy community.” For more information, or to get involved with the Poverty and Homelessness Action Week, email yukonantipovertycoalition@gmail. com, or call 334-9317. Yukon Beer Festival takes place Friday and Saturday nights at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre

Festival-goers will get a Yukon Beer Festival glass to try samples of beer

by Darrell Hookey

K

aori Torigai loves beer in much the same way others love baseball. Or World of Warcraft. Like baseball, there are a mind-boggling array of statistics to consider. And, like World of Warcraft, there is a huge cast of characters. And, as in both baseball and World of Warcraft, beer is social, it can be shared with friends long into the night. As the president of the Yukon Beer Festival society, Torigai will be sharing beer with 1,000 people at the third annual Yukon Beer Festival this weekend. For now, though, she shares her love of beer with friends just one table at a time. Or, she can whip out her cellphone and use an app to share it with the world. “It’s called, Untappd,” she says, showing the icon for the app on her cellphone’s home screen. “It allows you to track the beers you have had and you can see what your friends are drinking.” If you see Torigai taking a photo of her beer, she is probably reviewing it. There is another app called BJCP.

Members of the Yukon Beer Festival Society meeting on a weekday evening before the festival to get ready

“It stands for Beer Judge something something,” she says. Then, after studying her phone more closely, “Beer Judge Certification Program. It is a basic guideline that everyone uses to judge beer. “If you are having a craft beer contest, you can judge it.” That is how Torigai got involved in the wider world of beer five years ago. “My friend, Lara Lewis, who (used to) write a beer column for What’s Up Yukon, said, ‘Hey, you have a good ability to taste foods and have really sensitive taste buds, you should do this beer judging with me... we need more judges.’” Torigai isn’t prepared to call this talent a super power. “I don’t think I would have the patience or knowledge of molecular biology to understand how the chemical processes work to get the beer you want and know when yeast drops out at certain temperatures or how the flavour changes,” she says.

“Judging beers is something I love to do and I am able to taste and comment on a specific beer and how it matches a style, but I can’t offer advice to breweries.” The fun, for her, is the discovery of new beers. “It is great to go to different breweries and try this and that,” she says. “There are new breweries out there that are fantastically good.” New breweries are opening at a shocking rate. Torigai heard that Winnipeg opened six new breweries in six months. And it seems like there’s a new one a week in Vancouver. This bodes well for the weekend festival because patrons can sample many beers without having to buy a six-pack per taste. “Part of the goal for this festival is to say, ‘Hey, here are all of these different beers and here are all of these different flavours and all of these breweries and let’s see what you like.’” She’s especially excited about

two types of beers from The Ale Apothecary in Oregon. There, beers are brewed naturally in an organic process, in oak barrels. “They brew very small, small batches,” says Torigai. “So, the fact that we are getting two cases up here is unusual” Samples of these beers will

cost more -- five or six tokens at the festival. Yukon Brewing Company will be represented at the festival with an apricot roggenbier and Pumpkin Spice Ale. “For every season there is a beer,” says Torigai. “There are beers that are great for drinking in winter – stouts,

porters – as people often go to heavier beers in the winter because they are cozy. “And there are a lot of beers that have some serious sweetness and some beers that are great poured over ice cream – a stout beer, it is delicious,” she says. “There are some beers, too, with quite a bit of tartness to counter the sweetness of a dessert. “There are no limitations.” The third annual Yukon Beer Festival takes place Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. Special this year is the Connoisseur Tasting Hour, which takes place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on both evenings before the crowds arrive. Tickets for the Connoisseur Tasting Hour sets beer lovers up with advance admission and eight free tokens. Tickets are available at www. YukonBeerFestival.com. Early in October, there were only 130 of the 1,000 tickets still available. Darrell Hookey is a Whitehorsebased freelance writer.

The DVD Shelf with Marianne Darragh

About Arrivals and Departures The 2015 film Brooklyn is available on DVD at Whitehorse Public Library

T

he epic saga of immigration is brought to human scale in Brooklyn, a critically acclaimed film based on the novel by Irish writer Colm Tóibín, with a screenplay by Nick Hornby. Released in 2015 and available on DVD at the Whitehorse Public Library, Brooklyn follows a young woman who finds herself part of

the Irish diaspora, headed across the ocean to New York City. Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Roanan) is stirred to leave her small town in the early 1950s not due to extraordinary events, but mostly because she could do better elsewhere. A part-time job in a store can’t sustain her, and social life in the small town of Enniscorthy in

southeast Ireland is narrow. North America beckons to the old world with the promise of abundant opportunities. In truth, though, it’s more due to the efforts of her sister Rose that Eilis is propelled into the new world. With the sponsorship of Father Flood (Jim Broadbent) smoothing the way, Eilis makes a soft landing in America; a job has been arranged for her at the gleaming counters of a department store, and so has a room in a boarding house shared with other young Irish women. The exacting landlady, Madge Kehoe (Julie Walters) rules the roost there, doling out advice and sharp rebukes at the dinner table in a comic stream-of-consciousness. When her homesickness threatens to overwhelm Eilis, Father Flood has another card up his sleeve, enrolling her in college night classes. The reluctant transplant might be lonely, but her future looks bright. Once she meets Tony, an Italian-American, Eilis really starts to come out of her shell, becoming more confident and forthright than the shy girl she was back in Ireland. No longer overwhelmed by the unfamiliar, she’s beginning to understand the words of a seasoned expatriate: “Sometimes it’s nice to meet people who don’t know your auntie.” But a family event calls her back to Enniscorthy for a visit and once there, the rituals of wed-

dings and funerals and the company of friends and family absorb Eilis back into the fold. Wouldn’t you know it, suddenly Eilis is besieged with the opportunities that eluded her before. She’s offered a job in an office and she’s courted by Jim (Domhnall Gleason),who is the kind of eligible man that her family wanted for her. What about Tony? What about that future Eilis and he could imagine in the wilds of Long Island? Eilis’ placid face doesn’t reveal any of the conflict you’d expect. In the audio commentary, director John Crowley compares her reaction to Dorothy falling asleep in the poppy field just before she reaches the city of Oz. It’s not just a romantic triangle that Eilis is faced with; it’s about making a momentous choice between two lives for herself. Like the outwardly calm Eilis, Brooklyn has a strong emotional current tugging beneath the surface. Anyone who ever landed far from where they began, or anyone born into a family that came from away, will empathize with what Eilis learns about venturing into new territory. Marianne Darragh is a regular visitor to the DVD shelf in the Whitehorse Public Library. Please send comments about her articles to editor@whatsupyukon.com.

Richard’s Tire Tips

How do I know when to get NEW TIRES? Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition. Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

5:00 pm Seed: the untold story Dir. Taggart Siegel & Jon Betz, 2016, USA, 94 min. Focusing on the alarming loss of seed diversity due to the patenting and the commodification of seed varieties, SEED is informative as it is terrifying. SEED gives a voice to those who are committed to defending the future of food cultivation and our relationship with seeds. “This is a gorgeously made film, put together with as much care as its subjects devote to saving the remaining varieties of seeds.” ~Los Angeles Times

7:30 pm men & Chicken Dir. Anders Thomas Jensen, 2015, Denmark, 104 min. Anders Thomas Jensen’s genre-bending Men & Chicken is a film that is on the brink of insanity. In a film that is certain to be any dark comedy director’s dark comedy, Jensen has crafted a unique blend of laconic humour, deadpan wit, and outlandish setting.

This Friday, the family is showing new works of art at an exhibition called RepentiThree Art. The art show will open at The Old Fire Hall on Oct. 14 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will continue on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Halin de Repentigny came to the Yukon in 1981. visits to Moose Lake. I love also his painting called “Kids on the Dike”; it brings to mind my own trips to the shore of the Yukon River with my children in the past and my grandchildren in the present. “Purple Moose” and “Kids on the Dike” are both included in this show. Halin’s work is bold and beautiful – breathtaking, really. A Google search of “Halin de Repentigny” will allow the viewer to see past works. Rosa, Halin’s 14-year-old daughter, has followed in her father’s artistic footsteps. She is a born cartoonist and works in pen and ink. She will have a number of items on display. Halin’s brother, Serge, will also have work displayed. He works in acrylic. Serge lives in Montreal and has been painting for several years now. Recently he spent a month in the Yukon. Halin’s daughter Mado will have a few pieces in the show. A Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in citizen, she was raised on a trapline and spent the first 13 years of her life there.

The Yukon Arts Scene Gets Fantastic

Compilation of artwork from Heavy Metal North’s artists, from left: CC Deranged, Del Klassen, Kim Crawford, Matt Taylor-Fisher, Andrew Sharp, Vippy and Cole Pauls.

The Heavy Metal North Art Exhibition runs Oct. 14 to 16 at Triple J’s by Jessica Prentice

T

he Yukon prides itself on the talented resident artists who portray our vistas, wild creatures and northern life. This October, the Heavy Metal North Art Exhibition will bring Yukoners something darker, heavier, and a lot more fantastical than the usual fare. Seven Yukon fantasy artists — some showing their work publicly for the first time — have been working for over a year to bring us a show that explores world mythologies, science fiction and fantasy, horror, comedy noir, roleplay gaming and more, all set to an immersive rock and metal soundscape curated by the artists. I spoke with CC Deranged (Chris Caldwell), the artist responsible for forming the group, to talk about the show and supporting Yukon art that goes beyond what she calls our typical “flora, fauna, scenery and politics.”

On the Status Quo of Yukon Art CC: Most of the galleries here tend to cater to tourism, and tourists want a piece of the Yukon they can take back with them. But we’re 30 years behind the rest of the world. Graphic art, illustration, comic illustration: these are highly valued and a huge part of mainstream culture and modern media. In 1979-80 I tried to show a few of my fantasy pieces locally and got rolling eyeballs and “Gee, do you know how to draw a moose?” So I sort of hid my art in the closet and worked toward what the Yukon likes to be represented as, and I’ve had a great time. I didn’t realize there were other artists up here who also did fantasy art— until YukomiCon. As soon as I walked in I recognized it as the kind of art show I used to attend in Gastown back in the ‘70s and missed up here.

On Fostering Local Opportunities for Artist Development CC: I know of a lot of artists who end up in frustration because they have nowhere to show their (fantasy) art… so they leave. They struggle their way through the Vancouver scene, or go down to the States. So I figured if we can build a venue, someplace where people can show their creative art — fantasy art — and start a foundation for exposing their art locally, you can get enough experience under your belt to take your career to the next level.

Do Yukoners have an Appetite for the Fantastic? CC: There are a lot of people moving to the territory now who have different tastes in art. They’re not only interested in bringing the wilderness into their homes, they’re interested in reflecting their own cultures. So Heavy Metal North is also a market test: does anybody local like this stuff? If so, how many? Is it worth it to encourage the development of this kind of art within our community? If you want to make a space on the bus, you’ve got to get in there and make a space and that’s what we’re doing. Hopefully we’ll begin to have more amazing artists crawling out of their closets saying, “I do cool stuff, too!” The Heavy Metal North Art Exhibit runs October 14 to 16 at Triple J’s Music, Tattoos and Piercing, with sound and video sponsored by Eric’s Audio Video. The show is produced by C. Caldwell Productions.

asia Bulat is returning to the Yukon. Bulat is a multiinstrumentalist – she plays guitar, autoharp, banjo, ukulele, charango, hammered dulcimer, saxophone and flute – and has a powerful voice. She comes by her musical interests naturally, having a mother who was a music teacher who taught both piano and guitar. She has said the family radio was permanently tuned to an “oldies” station, so much so that she didn’t realize there were other stations until she was in her early teens. She was originally known in particular for performing in a folk style with an autoharp, but her more recent preferences, based on viewing the live concerts and studio performances on the CBC radio show Q (all available on YouTube) show her more likely to be playing

guitars, ukuleles, or keyboards and backed by a full rhythm and lead section. She has a commanding voice and her stage presence is obvious in the videos. She began performing while getting a degree in English at the University of Western Ontario, where she was encouraged to take to the stage. She released her first EP in 2005 when she was 21. She was on stage at the Dawson City Music Festival following the release of her first full album, Oh, My Darling, in 2007. Her third album was nominated for a Juno Award and was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. In February she released her fourth album, called Good Advice, which was also nominated for a Polaris Prize. The Montreal based singer-

Her musical style seems to cross a lot of genres, and her recent tour schedules have seen her featured at every type of festival from folk to jazz. She last visited the territory for the Dawson City Music Festival in 2008, a trip she subsequently credited with having a tremendous influence on the writing of her second album, Heart of My Own, including the addition of a song called “Gold Rush.” “You saw the light of gold and rushed “You said you couldn’t fight it off

“This is the story of the one you lost…” Her busy schedule will see her in Dawson City, in the KIAC (Odd Fellows Hall) Ballroom for a solo performance on Oct. 15, and in Whitehorse at The Old Fire Hall, on Oct. 17. These are the last stops on a western tour before she heads for more dates on the east coast and central Canada. This tour, which began on Sept. 24 in Ontario and will end in Quebec on Dec. 2, will see her in nine provinces and the Yukon before she’s done.
