veryone has a list of family and close friends that they feel the need to make an effort to visit every decade or so. If you’re like me and your entire extended family lives outside the Yukon, they may be making an extra effort to come and see you, because (though geographically cumbersome) the Yukon is pretty cool place to come visit. Part of my extended family recently came up to stay with us. Though my parents, siblings and I were not to able to quite recreate the Yukonic tour William and Kate received, hopefully we were able to showcase the Yukon’s best features. Everyone knows the real grunt work comes before the guests arrive. If your family is anything like mine, the house will undergo a ritual massive cleaning from top to bottom. It’ll be a family team effort of approximately five hours combined, with the vacuum whirring in the background and washing machine roaring with a full load. You breakout that tub of cleaning chemicals to finally deal with that stain you made on the carpet last month and squirt everything with the cleaning solution that somehow makes it shiny.

It all builds up towards that first impression moment, when your guests walk into the pristine house. Their gaze will land on the coffee table lined with selectively chosen books that you never read, but simply give the impression that “I’m absolutely someone who spends my Sunday morning leafing through collections of The Best Landscape Photography of Western Canada.” The dining room table is elegantly strewn with pinecones and other pieces of miscellaneous nature and shrubbery. A scene that Martha Stewart decided would look good on a dinner table and that the rest of the world just went along with. There are floating candles and candles that smell like honey. The good plates that we never use are hauled out of the back corners of the back cupboards and are all set and laid out with fancy napkins. If a room could have a facial expression, this one would have a raised arched eyebrow with an expression reading, “Oh, you mean everyone’s dinner table doesn’t look like this?” When your guests eventually walk through the door and run their fingers across the railing without a spec of dust coming off,

they’ll finally utter that ever so longed for comment, “Oh wow, the place looks great!” To which your mother will secretly take great delight in replying, “Oh thanks, it’s an absolute mess. Sorry, I didn’t get a chance to clean much. Come in, come in.” They come in and you’ll talk about old times, catch up on new times and rave over Air North together. You’ll layout the following weekend plans. Some of which, will start and stop at the ends of Main Street, for our visitors who don’t particularly enjoy the outdoors and more so came to the Yukon for the postcard and to check off some personal bucket list items. But for others, hikes, hikes and more hikes will be enough for them until the snow sets in. Combine that with some Midnight Sun coffee, a beautiful sunset and the cold weather fulfilling your guests need to justify owning a down jacket they bought on clearance down south, they’ll have a great trip! Dozens of bags were dropped off to be sorted in the last month. Clothing items fill the racks already Women of the congregation continued to sort and run the thrift shop. As the church was doing well, the proceeds were directed to the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund for many years as outreach. The thrift shop is a mainstay for locals, workers from Squirrel Camp and Burwash Landing up the North Highway, as well as tourists and members of other Yukon communities. Probably the most interesting story happened a few years back when there was a beautiful wedding dress in stock. A young woman from another Yukon community visited a couple of months prior to her wedding. She’d had no luck finding a dress until she spot-

ted this dress and tried it on. It fit and looked amazing! Not only did she buy the wedding dress, but her mother found her wedding outfit at the thrift, as well. As it’s close to Hallowe’en, there will be some customers who are looking for additions for their costumes as well as those looking for great fall bargains. There’s

something for everyone from babies to adults, including footwear, and some housewares. The thrift shop will run the second and last Thursday each month until the big “dollar-a-bag” final clear out in June. Donations are accepted all winter long. Ruth Lawrence is a Haines Junction-based writer.

t’s autumn and time for the thrift shop in Haines Junction to ramp up again for winter. Dozens and dozens of bags of used clothing and housewares have been dropped off in the last month at the back door of St. Christopher’s Church. Local women were sorting and organizing for weeks in preparation for the thrift’s opening day, Oct. 13, which went really well -lots of items sold, and there were lots of happy customers. The thrift shop was originally set up in early 1980s in the basement of the church rectory. Then, clothes came in bales, sent from church women in Vancouver. Bales contained beautiful hand-knitted baby clothes, sweaters and quilts. The shop migrated to the back of the original church building where the leaky woodstove provided minimal heat; it was so cold that people wore mittens as they sorted clothes. When the new church was built, the thrift shop moved to the basement. More and more local clothing started to be donated.

The Life and Times of Teenage Metalheads,

October 26, 2016

WaRRmAuth by Selene Vakharia

W

aRRmAuth is one of the most intriguing bands to be rising out of Whitehorse’s small but strong musical talent pool. At the forefront of the metal scene revival, these teenage stars rock harder than most with talent and ingenuity to back them up. Given their captivating stage presence and extraordinary music-

al harmonies, it’s a shock when they take off their masks, revealing their young faces. Comprised of four local teens, this band will have you rethinking just what young people can do when they put their minds and talents to it. The band first formed three years ago when bass player Ragn Royle brought together guitarist Manus Hopkins and drummer Brandon Butler with the dream of playing metal music. A year in, they felt the need to evolve their sound and brought in Milan Lapres. “Nailz [lead guitarist Lapres] had just purchased his first electric guitar and was learning fast,”

Royle says. “He joined after a few months of playing and the rest is brutal history.” With two of the original members meeting for the first time at their new band’s practice, the group has come a long way. Now three years old, the band is going strong and has played at Epic Pizza, BYTE’s 2015 Battle of the Bands at the Future Routes Music Festival, and even Atlin Music Festival. “We had a lot of people [at Atlin] and we’d been looking forward to playing a music festival like that cont’d on page 5...

Banging on the Sofa

Jazz drummer Willie Jones III and his quintet will be on the wing at the YAC this weekend by Ken Bolton

W

illie Jones III isn’t shy about crediting his late father, a renowned pianist from Los Angeles, with sparking his interest in jazz. “Even before I started school, he would take me to rehearsal with him and I would watch while he rehearsed. For some reason, I would always sit next to where the drums were, and I was just amazed by the physicality of the instrument,” Jones says. “I used to play on the pots and pans, and I used to take forks and knives and bang on the back of the sofa, so my parents said, ‘We gotta get him a drum set.’” They started him off with some practice pads and drumsticks, but when he was seven or eight, his dad bought him a snare drum. Then, in middle school, he got his first full drum set. “That was an incredible thrill. I wasn’t really serious about practising, yet, but I was always passionate about just playing. I’d put on Art Blakey records, and I could play with that for hours.” He also loved watching his father at work with his colleagues. “I could watch musicians practise and play for hours as a kid. I knew that was the kind of lifestyle I wanted.” Growing up in L.A., Jones soaked up the output from the Blue Note and Prestige jazz labels, and cites East Coast drumming luminaries such as Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones as early influences on his style. “But I am from the West Coast, so there are a lot of people I’m influenced by – drummers like Donald Dean and Larance Marable, who weren’t household names like the drummers on the East Coast, back in the day.”

gardless of the style, and make something beautiful happen,” he explains. “So that’s my concept. No matter who you’re playing with, keep your ears open and look at how to make it sound musical. That’s something I strive for all the time, whenever I’m put on the bandstand.” Since moving to New York City 19 years ago, Jones has made the occasional foray into composition, but doesn’t consider himself a “real” jazz composer such as Cedar Walton, Wayne Shorter, or Horace Silver. “I’m working on some new ideas right now. I favour ballads; that’s my thing. Beautiful melodies and nice harmonies, so I’m always trying to come up with something along those lines.” About 18 months ago, Jones put together a quintet for his sixth CD, Groundwork. An as-yetuntitled seventh CD is due PHOTO: courtesy of Willie Jones III for release next June on his independent label, WJ3. Bison Bao

A Northern take on Chinese-style steamed buns

S

teamed buns filled with a variety of meat and vegetables are a dim sum classic. This version is bison filled and spiced with ginger, garlic and chili paste but season the filling to your liking if you’re in the mood for something a bit more spicy. These buns also freeze beautifully, and reheat well popped back into a steamer from frozen. Any sort of steamer with a flat bottom will work but I suggest you invest in a bamboo steamer, it will make reheating them incredibly simple and bamboo steamers are a great way to quickly cook most leafy greens, shrimp and even some cuts of fish. Makes 24 filled buns.

Bison bao INGREDIENTS: Bison Filling 1 tsp toasted sesame oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and grated 1 pound ground bison 1 teaspoon chili paste (sambal oelek or sriracha would work well) ½ cup chicken stock 1 Tbsp hoisin sauce 1 Tbsp oyster sauce Steamed Dough 1 Tbsp yeast 2 Tbsp plus 1 ½ teaspoons sugar 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour, divided ¾ cup warm water 1 Tbsp canola oil ½ tsp baking powder METHOD: To make the filling: 1. In a frying pan over medium high heat, add the sesame oil and heat until shimmering. Add the

Bison bao with condiments onion, garlic and ginger and cook until beginning to soften – about 5 minutes. Add the bison and cook, stirring often until it browns – about 7 minutes. Add chili paste, stock, hoisin sauce and oyster sauce and cook until all the liquid has fully reduced, about 8 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool. To make the dough: 1. In a small bowl mix together yeast, 1 ½ teaspoons sugar, ¼ cup of the flour and ¼ cup of the warm water and let sit until bubbling, about 30 minutes. 2. Add remaining water, flour, sugar and the canola oil to the mixture and knead until smooth and elastic – about 6 minutes. Lightly coat the dough with oil and let sit in a bowl covered with a tea towel in a warm place until it triples in volume. Depending on how warm your area, this could take between one and three hours. 3. Punch down dough and sprinkle with baking powder, knead for 5 minutes. Divide the dough into

24 evenly sized pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Place all the balls on a lined baking sheet and let stand for 30 minutes. Assemble and cook: 1. Place a parchment lined steamer over a pot of boiling water. Roll each ball of dough flat with a rolling pin, then place 1 tablespoon of filling in the centre and pinch the dough around the filling to seal. Repeat with all remaining dough and filling. 2. Place buns in the steamer leaving 1 to 2 inches between each bun, then cover and cook for 15 minutes. Repeat with all remaining buns and serve hot with chili oil. Lifting weights. It’s good for your bones • 4 QUICK TIPS TO KEEP BONES STRONG •

or most of our Canadian lives, we are told that lasting bone strength is a glass or two of milk away. This is reflected heavily in the Canada’s Food Guide, which acts as a foundation piece for nutrition and wellness in doctors’ offices, classrooms and even many kitchen tables. Commercials and other ads push hard to make sure people have “got milk” by making it synonymous with calcium and bone health. But is it? Dairy is not the only source of calcium. And often it is not even the best source. Two large Swedish cohort studies that followed collectively over 100,000 people over the course of 20 and 11 years found that a high intake of dairy could actually increase the risk of fractures. The researchers point to the D-galactose and lactose in milk as possible culprits behind oxidative stress and accelerated aging that may paradoxically weaken bones. There are a number of excellent non-dairy sources of calcium and simple lifestyle habits you can build into your daily routine to ensure your bones stay strong throughout your life.

11am - 9pm

1345

1. Get vitamin D and magnesium Calcium is a difficult mineral to absorb. This means that even if you consume a lot of it, it might not be making its way to the right places in your body and it might not be doing what you need it to do. Vitamin D and magnesium are both essential for the absorption and proper use of calcium in our bodies. With our northern exposure and diets, both of these nutrients tend to be lacking in our lives. Consider supplements to help you top up. 2. Go beyond the dairy aisle There are many delicious foods that offer good amounts of calcium while providing variety to your diet. Sea vegetables, such as spirulina, dulse, and kelp, are all high in calcium. Leafy green vegetables, chickpeas, and tahini or sesame seeds are also great sources. 3. Stay active Weight-bearing exercises, such as yoga, walking and jogging all help to build up bones and keep them strong. Help the children in your life build good bone habits by encouraging an active lifestyle from a young age.

4. Don’t forget other nutrients The issue with supplementing single nutrients is that they often don’t take into account the synergistic effect of many micronutrients working together. Our bodies are complex and require a wide range of different nutrients – not just large amounts of a few. Vitamin K, silicon, strontium, boron, and zinc all work together to build bones. Omega 3 fatty acids help to increase calcium absorption and delivery to the bones. Lycopene, which is found in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, red berries, and beets, also do their part to keep bones strong. The best way to get all the nutrients your bones need is to eat a balanced diet with a rich variety of foods and colours. Like all areas of health and wellness, keeping your bones healthy takes a holistic approach combining a varied, healthy diet with an active lifestyle. Hurricane Matthew

T

he eye of Hurricane Matthew hit the Tiburon Peninsula, the southwest tip of Haiti, on October 4th. With winds that blew 230 kilometres an hour and up to 500 millimetres of rain in two days, it was the strongest storm to hit the country in 50 years, according to the NASA website. The storm stripped parts of Haiti bare. Earlier this year, in the summer, Freddy Osson’s dad, Gabriel Osson, asked him if he wanted to go to Haiti with him, and “do a little trek?” Freddy said yes. He lives in Dawson City. Gabriel lives in Ontario, he moved there when he was 17, from Haiti, where he was born. Freddy has always said that when he goes to Haiti, it will be with his dad. u

In recent years Gabriel had been making trips to Haiti; his sister has a house there, she lives in the town of Jacmel, which is on the south coast of Haiti, east of the Tiburon Peninsula, directly south from the capital city, Port au Prince. Gabriel does what Freddy calls humanitarian work. He brings ideas about permaculture to Haitians so they can farm the land and increase food security. This is crucial because Haiti is a “remarkable bountiful land,” says Freddy, but so many Haitians rely on foreign aid for food. Gabriel does projects that encourage farmers to grow food that will flourish there using methods that will keep nutrients in the soil. He’s also been involved in some work around reforestation.

Freddy and Gabriel Osson trekked north from Jacmel, over a mountain pass. Here the air was cool and the vegetation different from at sea level

Along with this, Gabriel’s interest is to share Haiti with others. He wants to start bringing people to the country for what he calls “geo-trekking adventures.” He and Freddy planned to hike south from a town near Port au Prince, over a mountain pass, and into Jacmel. Gabriel wanted to see what the trail was like, because he is thinking of bringing some people there next April. Their plan was waylaid by Hurricane Matthew. Gabriel and Freddy flew into Port au Prince on Oct. 6, their flight was delayed by “two or three days,” says Freddy, because the airport was closed. A friend of Gabriel’s picked them up from the airport and they drove over the pass to Jacmel to Freddy’s aunt’s place. I talked to Freddy because I cont’d on page 15...

The view from the top of the pass. Mountains beyond mountains, or as they say in Creole “Derrière les mornes, il y a d’autres mornes.” Or words to that effect, which means, behind the mountain, there is another mountain wanted to know what Haiti was like right after the hurricane. Freddy and Gabriel were curious, too. The main road west, to where the eye of Matthew landed, was closed because of landslides and flooding. Freddy was in Haiti until

Oct. 15, and he said a cargo truck started winding its way west when he was leaving. He didn’t see any of the devastation. Driving over the pass to the south coast, some of the tin roofs were peeling a bit. The rivers were swollen. When he asked, people told Freddy that, “the wind blew like a jerk for 48 hours and there was a tonne of rain,” he recounted. The feeling Freddy got is that Haitians are used to being hit by disasters. “There’s an acceptance,” he says. “People say, ‘we’ve been hit by hurricanes before, there’s earthquakes, this is Haiti!’” There was an hour or two of power a day, but other than that it was out. Previous to the hurricane, people told Freddy that the power had been fairly reliable. “But it didn’t seem to slow anyone down,” he said. He and his dad spent their time walking around, going to the beach. A pastor Gabriel knows is a writer and a poet, and they went to a poetry slam with him that happens every week. Freddy and Gabriel stayed in

Jacmel for a little over a week, then they hiked north, into the mountains. “The air was cooler, the vegetation was different,” says Freddy. “There were pine trees and cactuses growing in the same forest! Pretty cool.” They crested the pass and had a view into the next valley. “The place is a beast, man,” says Freddy. He recounted a legend told in Haiti where an early explorer was asked to describe the topography. The man crumpled up a piece of paper and threw it on the table, “there you have it man,” he said. “And what the Haitians say is, ‘behind the mountain, there is another mountain’, except in creole,” says Freddy. Here the tragedy of deforestation was apparent to Freddy. He saw rocks exposed because of erosion, and roads washed out in landslides. Freddy didn’t go to the most western tip of Haiti, the area called the breadbasket, where crops, homes and livestock were wiped out. What he experienced were Haitians living life, as usual.

A Good Read for Halloween Night

Yukoner Marcelle Dubé´s newest book is a ghost story by Elke Reinauer

me, as I am not subject to those kinds of fears, so finally I decided to write about it, as an exorcism. “And once I started, I raced through to the end. It was most satisfying,” she says about the writing process of Shelter. Shelter is a story about Ash, a woman who’s fleeing domestic violence and abuse. She is already exhausted and scared, and now she has to deal with a ghost. Reading the first chapters, one can feel pity for Ash, who is wounded by her past. Dubé writes very well and empathically, but she switches perspective quite often. The reader jumps from Ash`s perspective into the head of her realtor Maddie, who is showing Ash the haunted house. It can be tiring for readers to switch perspec-

tives after one page. Some readers might wish to stay longer in Ash`s head and get to know her better. But as the story unfolds, Dubé catches her readers with

an easy topic. “I have no idea how Ash came to me, or why she was running from an abusive situation. It’s not anything I have ever experienced, and I had to rely on experts to (hopefully) get the details right,” the author answers. The whole story came to her as the cure for writer`s block. Also during the writing process she lost her fear about ghosts: “It worked. I’ve just returned from the haunted hotel I was at a year and a half ago, and I am happy to report that I slept very well.” Do ghosts exist? They do in Dubé`s novel Shelter, a good read for spooky Halloween night.

PHOTO: amazon.com In her blog Dubé tells about her ghost experience. During the workshop, she stayed at an old hotel, which was haunted. Two people she knew well, who had also slept there, told her they had seen ghosts there. Friendly ghosts, who would show up, but were harmless, they said. Dubé´s first reaction was to laugh, she tells in her blog article. She sees herself as a rational woman, even though as a kid she had returning dreams of ghost and monsters. She outgrew them and is using her imagination about them in her writing. Dubé didn`t see a ghost in this hotel room, but she was scared at night, she writes. Back home she would wake up at night, wondering if there was somebody or something in the darkness. “The experience bothered

o ghosts exist? For some they do. The main character in Marcelle Dubé´s novel, Shelter, moves into a haunted house in a small town in Ontario. Dubé started the story as a gothic novel and in the end it became a ghost story. Marcelle Dubé is well known in the Yukon and she usually publishes one or two books a year. One could think that she is a writer who works fast, but not this time. Lately she had to suffer what all writers have to go through from time to time: writer`s block. A writing workshop helped her to get out of it. “I could not write a word - for months. I thought that was it for me. But something that happened in the workshop kept coming back to me -- a ghost experience, of a sort,” she says.

f you live all by yourself downtown Whitehorse, the last thing you want is somebody knocking at your door in the middle of the night - somebody who is strange, somebody who calls your name and you don`t know what they want from you. One night in early February I had just returned from a concert at the Dirty Northern Public House. I was in a good mood, putting on my pajamas, boiling water for tea. It was snowing outside and very windy that night. The house I was living in was old; I could feel the wind coming through the cracks in the windows. Since my roommate had left in December, I hadn’t been able to find a decent person to move into the basement bedroom. The wood in the house always made noises, it crackled or the wind would sing when he blew around the old house. Sometimes there were noises I could not identify; like a rattling, scratching or murmuring. Every night I slept with earplugs, otherwise I would lain awake listening for the noises of the old house. The place was

too big for just one person. But nobody wanted to move in. No roommate, no boyfriend; it had been a sad winter so far. But pouring my herbal tea I thought about the musician whom I had just met that night. He had long brown hair, was handsome, had flirted with me and asked for my number. So there was hope to turn this sad winter into something romantic. I stood in the kitchen, a relict of the ’50s, which I liked a lot -- a huge open kitchen which led into the living room. I loved cooking in there, and I got carried away dreaming about the musician and me - me cooking him a wonderful meal in candlelight with music playing in the background. Then I heard the knock at the old wooden door. I startled. Another knock. Instinctively I knew it wouldn`t be a friend this late. My heart pounding, I went to the door, asking with a shaky voice: Who is it? No answer. Silence for a moment. Then I heard my name, the person said my name like he would sing it, with a strange thin voice. Another knock. I went back into

the kitchen grabbing a knife from the counter and walked back into the living room. I heard my name again and shivered. Who was this? Thoughts were running through my head. I realized how easily one could break into this old house. Where could I flee? Backdoor? It led into the backyard and from there I had to run around the house. I grabbed my phone, ready to call the police. My hand was shaking. I heard my name again. Another knock. Then, steps moving away through the snow. I waited, unable to move, feeling racing heart, listening for returning steps. Silence. I looked through the window. But all I could see where the lamplights on the street, and snow - moved by wind. I still felt shaky. I tried to calm down and tell myself that it was just a drunk person who must have mistaken my home for his. I drank my tea, which was lukewarm by now. I didn`t want to go to sleep. The wind was howling around the house again, and the old wood crackled. How could I sleep now, all by myself?

The Dead Man’s Gold Pan: Fiction T

The old house in downtown Whitehorse was creaky and filled with character PHOTO: Elke Reinauer So I stayed up, drinking tea, turning on the TV, looking out through the window every now and then. I pulled out my bear spray from my hiking rucksack. That will do it for now, I thought. I fell asleep on the couch in the grey light of the morning with the bear spray beside me. I woke up because my phone was ringing. There was this voice again. The voice from last night, saying my name and suddenly I was wide awake, full of fear. Who`s that? I asked shaky. The voice said my name again and laughed. It was Brad. Brad. The boyfriend of my friend Alice, whom I hadn`t seen in a year. His voice sounded different than I remembered. “I came back from Edmonton yesterday,” he said. “Did you knock at my door last night?” “Yeah, why didn´t you answer?”

“I was scared to death, I was about to call the police.” He said nothing and I felt my fear turning into anger. At least apologize, I thought, but he said: “I wanted to see you, I broke up with Alice,” revealing the reason why he came to my house late at night. I stared at the bottle of bear spray; it was red like a fire extinguisher. Brad`s voice faded and I looked out the window, longing for spring. I hoped that the musician from last night would call. But, somehow I had the feeling that I would spend the next four month of winter all by myself. Waking up alone. With a bottle of bear spray lying beside me.

munching on the wild strawberries while his grandfather plodded on with the military persistence he had honed during his career with the RCMP, mapping each step and find along the way. Calum figured he would never find anything down there. The old man’s foot tingled and his heart jackhammered as he pressed down the accelerator. Gravel spinning and fishtailing around every bend, he slammed to a stop, jumped out and grabbed his things from the trunk, not even taking the keys out of the ignition before he found himself sliding and staggering down the twisting, root strewn trail, ankle deep in snow. Maddox in hand to break the frost bitten ground, his headlamp flickered and his hands shook as he retraced his steps to the very spot he found the cursed talisman. He had traced his hallucinations and lucid dreams about the canyon back to the day he found the gold pan. At first his visions were of lava flowing, carving out a canyon. Eventually a single elder fisherman, gaffe in hand, pointing to the bend in the river by Canyon City, looked at him repeating the word Unilyin over and over. Near the end his dreams became more menacing, with a cold dead hand extending, grasping him in his bed and pulling him into the abyss. It was the gold pan it wanted. As he scrambled over the hardened clay, the dead silence of the Halloween night gave way to a cornucopia as the forest and canyon reanimated. He could hear the hammering of the blacksmiths, the screeching of the Macaulay trams wheels in the frosty night, the braying of the horses, and a piano tune playing from the pub while a raucous group merrily

sang the chorus, “Ho for the Klondyke, ho.” Un-phased by the zeitgeist the old man charged through crowds of wraiths and the spectre of the machine shop. As he began to hammer away at the hard ground Sahwin could hear the smashing from his watery crypt. It was the first time vibrations had broken the silence on the hallowed eve in many years and he rose to the surface crawling towards the old man. The old man felt the malevolent presence and as he turned to the river they locked eyes. His hands grasped for anything to hold as he was dragged towards the water. When he realized he was still holding the gold pan He let it go. But Sahwin didn’t. The RCMP constable allowed Calum past the caution tape to collect his grandfather’s belongings as a new snow fell. They had ruled that he must have slipped into the river and died from a shock-induced heart attack. Calum knelt and collected his grandpa’s headlamp, gloves, and the map of his Canyon City findings. As he was getting ready to stand he noticed an abnormal shape in the snow. He brushed the top and felt a hard surface. As he cleared off the fresh snow he saw a gold rush era gold pan. Perhaps his grandfather’s last find. He tucked it under his arm and began to walk back up the trail. He turned his head as he heard a clanking off in the distance and couldn’t shake the feeling that he was being watched. That night as he lay in bed and drifted off to sleep the word Unilyin whispered to him over and over.

here is a crack at the base of the Yukon River, a portal to the earth’s core. It’s just above Miles Canyon and has witnessed ice ages come and go; the birth of mountains, lava and glaciers carving out canyons, the rise of man, and the death of men, one in particular; Joe Sahwin. Beside the crack, sunken logs form the walls of a scurvy shack housing Sahwin’s gold lusting soul. Once a year, when the dark half takes over, Sahwin creeps to the banks hoping to find his lost relic so he can restart his journey to the Klondike gold fields. Sahwin drifted into Canyon City on a nondescript hand crafted scow on an un-seasonally warm

October 31 in 1898. He was hell bent on pushing through the white water, much to the dismay of MaCauley who hated missing out on a transaction, but Sahwin’s lust for riches prevailed over logic. Like many before him, the turbulent stampede of white horses trampled him to the depths. They never recovered Sawhin’s corpse. A baby-faced, moustached NWMP constable found Sahwin’s pack tangled in some overhanging alders on the bank of the river and as he arrived back to Canyon City, he tossed Sahwin’s gold pan in the tin can heap behind the machine shop. Day after day, season after season, year after year, it sat, immersed under the land long after

footprints frequented Canyon City and the tins cans rusted to dust. Sahwin looked for it every year but there was always too much snow. It was eventually retrieved over 100 years later and taken to a treasure seeker’s home in Riverdale. Calum and his Grandpa had gone “treasure” hunting with their metal detectors for as long as he could remember; Army Beach as a kid, Carcross Desert as a teen, Canyon City as a young man. Canyon City became the old man’s obsession when it was rumoured that a diamond ring was found there. When Calum tired of digging up piece after piece of rusted tin can, he would sit back,

Richard’s Tire Tips Storing your out of season tires properly

IS VERY IMPORTANT! Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable. The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

No more lifting, loading, lugging required Ask us about our Tire Storage Service!

We will earn your satisfaction GUARANTEED!

You have to take life in the Yukon as it comes. Enjoy the good times

I

heard a rumour that the old pond hockey tournament in Whitehorse was started by a woman seeking to land an Alaskan husband. I also heard that it worked. The Buckwheat Ski Classic was designed to bring women in tight leggings from Whitehorse to Skagway. Literally. The organizer said those exact words! At that moment at the sunny starting line, the group of eight Whitehorse women I skied with realized we’d been had. With only so many single people, let alone fewer on online dating sites, it seems sometimes producing events that bring in new people is a necessary part of the Northern dating game. Could this be a factor in why we have so many festivals and events? This small dating pond affects some more than others. A friend told me he researched the ratio

of gay men to gay women in the Yukon, because he really felt there was a difference. He said the data he found showed it was 10-1, gay women to gay men. He presented his findings to his family, and he too went away for school. Lots of school, all the way up to Grade 22. I have to be completely honest and say I’m back in the city for school myself, and all my dating woes have magically disappeared. I got more than 115 Tinder matches in my first several days. Good ones, too. I had to log out because all the chatting and lining up of dates was taking away from other commitments. Graduate school, to be completely honest yet again, was actually originally just a cover for the wonderful world of city dating, because I was done done done with my forever-aloneness in the Yukon. I share this to emphasize there’s a very strong chance, it’s

not you, it’s the Yukon. After that truth, I don’t really know what else to say. This is by no means an advice column. More of a way to have a dialogue about the unique realities of online dating up North. By creating a space sharing the Yukon Tinder struggle, you can realize you are not alone in being alone. This is the last article in this series. I’ll leave you with this. While you’ll have way less matches up north, you’ll have exponentially more campfires, aurora borealis, stars, ice-fishing, caribou meat, potlucks, sledding, sundogs, huskies, and statistically speaking, alcohol. And don’t forget that cross-country skiing. Keep the flame alive!

Amelia Merhar is a grad school student in Toronto. She’ll be back.

Part 2

The dance craze with a kick! by Grant Simpson

I

t’s difficult to think of the cancan as being a dance-craze, like the fox-trot, the Charleston or the twist, but along with the polka, that’s exactly what it was by the early 1840s. Working-class Paris dancehalls like the Chaumiere began to admit dancers for free if they would agree to perform the cancan and the polka throughout the evening. The dance was a free-form, improvised, unrehearsed activity, and it let working class people blow off steam after a day in the laundry, factory or work house. One of the earliest descriptions of the cancan comes from A History of Dancing, by Gaston Vuillier. Vuillier refers to the dance as “The Cachucha,” which is one of its earliest names. He describes cancan dancers in the Chaumiere during the 1830s as follows: “They are off! It is a helter-skelter of bewildering

Kicking the hat off of the head of an eager observer is one of the earliest recognizable moves of the cancan. Historians have found evidence that this move evolved from ancient dances of the Bretons and Egyptians.

Friends, Food & Drinks October Events dash, of electrifying enthusiasm. One dancer leans languidly over, straightening himself again with vivacity; another races the length of the ballroom, stamping with pleasure. The girl darts by as if inviting a fall, winding up with a saucy, coquettish skip; that other passes and repasses languidly, as if melancholy and exhausted; but a cunning bound now and then, and a movement. They mingle, cross, part, meet again, with a swiftness and fire that must have been felt to be described.” Between 1830 and 1860 the cancan began to spread out of dance halls like the Chaumiere and infiltrate high society. Lavish costume balls were the norm during this period. When ball-goers caught on to the dance-craze, parties would erupt into cancan mayhem. Not everyone was enamoured with the new free-style, highkicking dance, since the kicks revealed what was worn underneath the dresses and was therefore considered lewd. Attempts by certain segments of society to stop the cancan were futile as by this time; the popularity of the dance had spread around the world.

The cancan began to appear in operas and ballets from the 1840s on. The dance spread around the world with performances in Great Britain, Europe and North America, usually as a solo dance done within the context of ballet dancing. During this period, ballet itself was being labeled as inappropriate by some moralists because of the skimpy costumes worn by the ballerinas and the physical openness that could be exuded in the dances. As the cancan gained mass popularity, certain cancaneuses began to rise in stardom and popularity. Some of their stories have been preserved in memoirs, biographies and other texts that tell us the story of the early cancan. One of the very first star cancaneuses was Celeste Mogador. She started out as a courtesan and later became a dancer. She rose to stardom and married a wealthy aristocrat. She then wrote several popular novels and a memoir of her days as a cancaneus. Celeste is said to have been the inventor of the jump-splits, which is a major part of the dance today. Depictions of Parisian cancan stars spread throughout the world

by way of postcards, 3D viewers, paintings, drawings, etchings, cartoons and stories. This created wild anticipation, worldside; everyone wanted to see the cancan. In many ways the cancan came with its own built-in publicity machine. Its notoriety created publicity, which created a branding that has endured for well over a century and is still going strong. On stage the cancan began to take shape as a choreographed dance in the mid-late 1860s as it prepared to take North America by storm. Next month, we continue the story of the cancan as it becomes firmly entrenched in the world of variety, burlesque, vaudeville theatres. If you are interested in reading more about this era of the cancan, we recommend the book “CANCAN!” by David Price. Available from his website: http://www. cancanbook.com/ If you would like to learn more about Celeste Magador, her memoirs are available from Amazon. What Happened to the Kids?

Marie Achtymichuk, Class of 2009 Tarot Card & Psychic Readings

by Jozien Keijzer While we talked, she was being reminded of grade seven. Mr. Harms was her favorite teacher. She even invited him to her graduation in 2009. She was surprised to learn that she was actually the only one who had invited him, as he was the favourite teacher ever of most kids. “I invited him that very day and in the evening he was there.” To that I say, “yes, that was Mr. Harms, of course he came, as he always truly cared about his students.” Marie agrees to that. She says, “He respected everybody, he took time to explain things and was able to calm everybody down when there was an issue like some bickering among us.” Currently Marie is taking the office administration program at Yukon College along with working in the store. She hopes to gradu-

ate with her certificate in 2018. The name of the store is Heather’s Snack Haven, where everybody can see Marie loves it. Marie and her boyfriend Zeb are the managers and her parents are the owners. “What do you love most about working here?” I ask. Instantly she answers, “The customers, as everyday funny things happen. The customers are friendly and fun, we have enjoyable talks. The customers know when I am grumpy or tired and they will start a joke.” Marie loves an expression that one of her customers always tells her: “Chin up, you’re doing great!” She sure is!

I

have Marie write out her full name for me. ‘Achtymichuk.’ It’s Ukrainian, where her dad is from. I compliment her on her beautiful handwriting. We have this interview in the store where Marie is a manager, we were interrupted by staff a few times. Marie is needed! Marie’s parents started the business in 2006, and Marie has worked there since. “What did you do after graduating from Porter Creek Secondary in 2009?” I ask. “I first went to our graduation party,” she says with a big smile, “and then I went on to work in the store full time, working all the different shifts.” In 2010 she went back to school at Yukon College to upgrade. She took math, English and a computer course. “Math?” I ask. “Yes,” she says. “I was always very good at math, but I didn’t have the prerequisites to further

my education. ” In 2015 she says she took a learning assessment program where she discovered a lot about herself. Such as, she is a slow learner but she does eventually understand. She needs real-life examples in order to understand, and that she needs to hear things rather than only reading about them. She is very persistent. “It took me three times to get my driver’s licence, but I did get it,” she proclaimed. I remember Marie in elementary school. She was happy and outgoing, and I would describe her now and even back then; as very vivacious. She tells me that in grade seven, Alexander (my son, who also graduated in 2009) once asked her why she spends so much time in the individual learning room. Marie says she answered him, saying she didn’t actually know. Only in 2015, after doing the learning assessment program, did she come understand the way she learns.
