y name is Destiny Clennett. I am 15-years-old and am Vuntut Gwich’in. I am working hard towards saving my culture and the connections my people had to the land. Let me tell you who my people are now and who we used to be. Through our people, through our land, through our caribou we are the Vuntut Gwich’in First Nation People. We stick together, help each other and work together as much as we can to make a healthy, hopeful community. We teach our young ones the ways of the land, our caribou, our way of dancing, and most importantly, our language. There are about 1,900 Vuntut Gwich’in people across Canada and some in the US. Only 1,300 know and speak the language. Most of my people have forgotten or were never taught our language. Sadly most of my family up in Old Crow don’t know the language fully. They also don’t understand the connection we have to the land and Caribou. The kids in Old Crow start smoking around ages 13 and 14 and drinking at ages 15 to 16. In Old Crow there is not much to do, all the things the kids there can do is school and try to pick fights as much as they can. My people are falling apart quickly now. Many of us are lost by, car crash, vileness against women and much more. WHO MY PEOPLE WERE: About 500 years ago my people hunted, fished and helped each other with everything. We never left each other’s side, we all lived

close together and were there when trouble occurred. We trusted one another and loved one another equally. We never let anyone down, we didn’t hate each other for one dumb reason, and we never harmed others’ space. The elders would teach our young ones old stories about their past as a child, or their parents’ past. They would teach them our ways of life, how we dance, who we look out for, what we hunt for, and our language. The children would learn all the important things and pass them onto their kids. The

Elders always made sure the kids knew all the stories, songs, dances by heart so by the time they were 13 they knew what to hunt, how to hunt, how to dance, where to find salmon, and everything else. Back then everything was different from now, and I’ll tell you how. The work for the female: The woman didn’t hunt or fish like the men did, but, in way you can say they did a lot more than the men. The men always worked outside (hunting, fishing, trapping, tracking, etc.) as in the woman did much more. They were always around the house looking after the little ones, cooking for their family, making baby belts, teaching the kids how to speak, teaching the kids how to bead, cleaning around the home (my people didn’t live in houses like the ones now. We lived in tents) making the fire, making clothes, washing clothes, and making sure everything is safe for the family. You can see through the years, how my people have changed. This is what I am trying to save. My language, special connections to my land and caribou, hunting etc. Destiny Clennett lives in Old Crow, Yukon.

iving across the Yukon River from Dawson City in the communities of West Dawson or Sunnydale has its perks. You’re near town, but not in town. A 35-minute walk or 10-minute ferry ride is all it takes to partake of the amenities of town living, while still experiencing an off-the-grid lifestyle. But twice a year something unique happens. The freeze-up and break-up of the river isolates us for several weeks at a time. There are no shops on the west side of the river. We must make sure we have enough of what we need to last until we can get across again. This includes food, water, fuel, DVDs, books and whatever else is felt to be important. At the moment, freeze-up is upon us. The ferry that connects us in the summer was pulled in October, two weeks earlier than anticipated due to heavy ice flow. This will be a short freeze-up, we all said. We’ll be walking across in no time. Then the temperature warmed up and the ice disappeared. No matter, we all said, this has happened before – a few cold nights, the ice will come back and we’ll be crossing in no time. The ice did return at one point, but then disappeared again with another warming trend. It started to sink in that maybe, just maybe, this freeze-up wasn’t going to go as fast as everyone thought. Conversations turned to whether or not certain supplies would run

News travels fast when a helicopter is booked. After fulfilling some work commitments in town, I hired a chopper to cross over to West Dawson to start my freezeup stay, and before I could put it on the group page to see if anyone wanted to come along or needed something, I had already received four phone calls asking me to bring over everything from cheese, bananas and croissants, to extra clothing for a neighbour’s kids. One of the landing areas in West Dawson is a wide open field at the end of my road. Every flight is greeted by a group of people, either PHOTO: Gabriela Sgaga with sleds, quads or trucks, coming to pick up what they View from West Dawson just days before the ferry is pulled had ordered from town. Humanity in a Post-Apocalyptic World Review of the novel Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

by Vanessa Ratjen “She was thinking about the way she’d always taken for granted that the world had certain people in it, either central to her days or unseen and infrequently thought of. How without any one of these people the world is a subtly but unmistakably altered place, the dial turned just one or two degrees.” -Emily St. John Mandel, Station Eleven

T

his is a book about the beautiful sadness of surviving. In Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel, a fictional swine flu pandemic, called the Georgia Flu, wipes out a fantastic number of the population – around four out of five people on the planet. Everywhere. Not everyone is killed. The story isn’t about why the survivors survived, but they did. The story is about how the world looks 20 years after the epidemic. Spoiler: No zombies. The author flips between threeish stories: in flashback, the life of an actor who has a heart attack on the eve of the epidemic; a young female survivor who, at eight years old, watched the actor as he fell onstage, the memory of him being the strongest image to pull her through the experience of her entire world imploding; and a paranoid photographer-now-paramedic, who gives us a glimpse of the initial days of societal collapse from the view of his brother’s stockpiled apartment. Setting a story in a post-apocalyptic world is a tricky thing: the plot can become perverse with too much beyond our known lives. Granted, a post-apocalyptic scenario itself would be just that, but -- call me ficti-normative, or what you will -- I like being able to relate to some aspects of the story

the author uses to pull us through this dystopian saga, thick with fear and vulnerability, is the muscle of her story. Station Eleven resonates with the shock, the awe, the hope and the dismantling of society in a fluid and personable manner. Many scenes are described with metaphors so seemingly small and mundane and, therefore, so appropriate – because isn’t that what we would all miss most later? The stirring of coffee at the milk counter, the flicker of the garage light, the hum of the library printer? Because of this, the moments of introspection and other-worldly experience still feel intimate and tangible. So, huzzah! for this PHOTO: wikimedia.org novel, and for bringing the dystopian future genre onto my playlist. Plus I’m reading. When an author takes charge bonus points: this novel is partly of how our world – the one we set in Canada and written by a know so well – drastically changes, Canadian author. Emily St. John Mandel’s 2014 there’s sure to be an avalanche of questions. While St. John Mandel novel Station Eleven is available opens many threads, character- at the Whitehorse Public Library wise and life-wise, she keeps the and in the communities through main plot on track by leaving some the Yukon Public Libraries system. questions refreshingly undetailed. This was mostly a good thing Vanessa Ratjen is a better as the novel would have become reader than writer, and she’s a tome, but I would have been done both in places such as: pleased to have a few more deNova Scotia, the Yukon and tails and some characters’ stories California. A product of the ArtArctica festival in Finland, the book of poetry and prose, fiction and non-fiction, is written in several languages of the north, including English and French. Rounding out the group is Bob Hayes with his new release Zhou: The Clan of the Wolf. Hot off the press, the story drawn from Hayes’ knowledge as a wolf biologist is “just a fantastic read,” says Schonewille. This is Hayes’ first work of long fiction. Meet 7 Yukon authors at Mac’s Fireweed Books open house on Dec. 3

very December since 2009, Lise Schonewille, manager of Mac’s Fireweed Books, celebrates Winterval, the start of the holiday season, with local authors in the store. Over the years the event has showcased a diverse collection of Yukon literature, subjects and writers as our literary talent grows. This year is no different with a mix of new authors and returning ones who have branched out into new genres. Joining her this year on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. is: Artist Jim Robb with Their Own Yukon, a collection of photos and stories of Yukon elders produced by Robb and researcher Julie Cruikshank in the 1970s. Out of print for over 40 years, the book originally “made a big impact,” Robb told the CBC. He hopes the re-release, with high quality photo reproduction and print production, creates a new impact of inspired creative activity within our artistic community. Mother-daughter team Rachel and Ursula Westfall return to the literary scene with One Faceted Eye. This is the third instalment of their collaborative Sasquatch series and sees runaway teen Emma and her friends embark on a crusade to save “one of the last great secrets of the wild.” Maureen Senecal will be there with her newage novel Angels and Aliens. Set on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, which is a pilgrimage route and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Chilkoot Trail, it’s the story of two people who lose their way along the path in this dimension only to find themselves in another dimension and on the path to human understanding. A-ya CB Arte, also known as Calle Artemenko, presents her first science fiction fantasy which follows Ariane Arte and the mysterious hooded youth Riku into Shadows: The beginning. NaNoWriMo Memoirs

Open a vein, let it flow by Ken Bolton

I

t was one of my former writing students who managed to shame me into signing up for NaNoWriMo this year. If you’re not familiar with that acronym, it stands for National Novel Writing Month. The deal is, each participant undertakes to knock off a 50,000-word novel during the month. No big deal. That’s only 1,667 words a day, and everybody knows writing is easy. All you do is open a vein and let it flow. Besides, NaNoWriMo runs on the honour system, so a person could write the word “cat” 50,000 times and still be a winner. Not that there are any prizes. Just a sense of accomplishment. Okay, a stroke to the ego. Hundreds, nay thousands, of would-be Yukon authors have no doubt been spending the last four weeks hunched over their Dells, or antique Remington Portables, chasing the dream of riches even beyond Stephen King’s imagining. On Day 1, I didn’t quite hit the target, because I was still negotiating with my characters to see whose story should get top billing. Day 2 was also disappointing, but I finally had some sense of the journey ahead. The fourth day turned a corner for me, when the NanNoWriMo calculator predicted I would finish by November 21. Holy smoke. Time to call an agent. Then, just to prove Shakespeare’s lessons about hubris

and other fascinating character flaws, in the predawn hours of Day 8, the tech world collapsed around my shoulders. After a sudden computer shutdown, I accidently hit the wrong button in the AutoSave zone and torched almost 6,000 words of infinite grace and beauty. Naturally, this included a section that had involved a huge amount of research about Irish emigration to Canada in the 1880s. It’s a time I don’t personally remember all that well. I ranted. I raved. I cursed Bill Gates (as I do almost daily). I probed my computer’s innards for hours, in search of that buried treasure. If I could not restore that passage, how would I ever reconcile the subplot involving the newlyformed order of Irish nuns, the Sisters of Our Lady of Knock, with the main plot about intrigue and revenge in a small liberal arts college in Eastern Ontario? The solution was obvious: have a drink and another litre of coffee. Then start again. Fortunately, my characters and I had formed a pretty tight bond by this time. They talked to me, I talked back. (Note to civilians: writers ALWAYS talk to themselves, even when the project is a mere 600work magazine piece.) Around Day

12, for three nights in a row my dreams included new characters clamouring for a piece of the action. Sorry guys, this plot bucket is full. But keep in touch, huh? There’s always next year. By mid-month, I could barely remember how long it had been since I wore anything other than my bathrobe. I had stopped logging my daily progress, for fear of either over-confidence or crushing despair. But the folks were moving around quite nicely in the world we had created together. With 10 days left, I was delighted to discover I needed to assemble only 13,000 more words. Time to put my head down, poke another hole in that vein, and just keep going. Note to my puzzled neighbours in the next apartment: sorry about all the late-night chatter. That’s just me, talking to beleaguered adjunct professor Kevin Donovan, the saintly Mother Mary-Cathleen, twisted Allison Williams, avuncular Desmond Cousins, O.P., and a couple of dozen other new friends. And please ignore the constantly-ringing phone next week. That will be my agent, calling to discuss the avalanche of offers for film rights. 1 Dry wicking sports wear is an ugly necessity for any winter outdoor activities. In fact, ‘long underwear,’ as some people call the under layer clothes one wears during the dark months, is so ugly it passes as sexy, in the ridiculous sense of the word. Especially as it accumulates holes. Try stripping down to your long underwear in public, and see how it makes you feel 2 When considering sweaters, think of types and styles of wool and knitting, as well as colour and cut. You will accumulate sweaters. You will rotate through favourites. In life, sweaters play a joyful role

week of lazily throwing your coat and hat down here or there, the pile will build up once more in its original horrific glory. Yet there is one item of the entire winter ensemble that never gets lost. It’s the once you’ve wrestled against the needing it and wanting for years as you pass their windows displays. It’s the

one where you finally coughed up the cash one Christmas and never looked back. As all Yukoners know, getting clothes for Christmas is worthy of supreme gratitude rather than childish complaints. It’s for when the weather plunges to hit the supreme temperatures, when it’s time to go nuclear. When it’s time to go down. Now for any Toronto-ians, this supreme temperature is somewhere around 0 degrees Celsius. Yukoners, on the other hand, still uphold the respect for down. They break it out only when deemed absolutely necessary, which is far too late by my southern standards. Yet it is Yukoners who actually live out the Canadian reputation for being able to withstand a chill. Despite all of the jokes and highlighted ironies, clothing trends follows a culture. And if Yukon culture is embedded in the human roots of keeping warm and keeping comfortable within a cold world, well I couldn’t be prouder to learn the art of Yukon Chic. Tess Casher lives in Whitehorse. She is a student who goes to F.H. Collins Secondary School.

3 Here, the style is in the details, which includes intricate beadwork and soft fur 4 ‘Yukon Chic: winter version’ means many types of winter boots for varying degrees of coldness and wetness, as well as jackets for layering, and the aforementioned plaid

I

t’s a long time before a fashion designer will stage a runway down a catwalk of the snow-laden Millennium Trail, yet the Yukon does uphold a clothing culture. Our style parallels our environment. This leads Yukoners to a distinctive style. If there were fashion police upholding the laws of Yukon style, any Yukoner without an article of plaid in their closet would be arrested. Subtle undertones of hearty northerner – meets lumberjack – meets I would actually wear this out in public – all radiate out of the crisscrossing stripes that

are plaid. Yukoners hold supreme immunity to a fashion crime that any other member of the human race would be convicted for: socks with sandals. Additionally, Yukoners are apt at the art of layering. From long johns to thermo-shirts, from big jackets to light jackets, to wind pants, you might as well receive university credit for calculating how to maintain an ideal body temperature. So. Winter is upon us. Gone are the days of walking out the front door. If your house is situated any-

thing like mine, there will be a mud room that looks like a battlefield, strewn with coats, mittens, hats, gloves, boots and thick winter socks. Each morning, you’ll need to dig through each pile of vital winter accessories, against the ticking clock. Arriving at work, most likely missing one glove and hideously over or under-dressed, you’ll vow to reorganize the chaos on a tomorrow that never comes. If you do manage to be part of the lucky few who do get around to actually organizing the mudroom, you’ll then battle the supreme entity of keeping it clean. As over a

Kids can shop by themselves

O

n Saturday, Dec. 3 the kids get to shop. All by themselves, without parents watching over shoulders. It’s the perfect chance for them to buy Christmas presents for their family. The Kids Shopping Hour is part of the Second Annual Christmas Market at The Old Firehall, which runs for two days: Friday, Dec. 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is organized by Elena Joss and Judy Matechuk, and they are pleased to be featuring the Kids Shopping Hour from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. “This was done once, about 27 years ago, when my youngest was six, at a craft fair in the Edgewater Hotel,” says Judy Matechuk. “He went in and did his shopping for the family and was so proud that he had picked out the presents

and paid for them himself. I think parents too often do the shopping because it’s easier, but kids miss that experience.” For the Kids Shopping Hour parents will be able to send in their children, while they wait in a location nearby. The kids can come in with a list, a budget and some money. There will be elves on-site to help them with their shopping. There will even be a gift wrap table available so the presents chosen will remain totally secret and the child can surprise the family with their gifts on Christmas morning. The local synchronized swimming team has agreed to be the elves and a parent of a team member has volunteered to wrap the chosen presents. The market organizers will be giving a donation to the synchronized swimming team for their efforts.

Kids will have lots of gift ideas to choose from in their quest: cards, magnets, LocaRoca candy, soap, credit card protectors, spices, key chains, sewn items, kale chips and dessert toppings, all for under $10. As well, there will be jewelry organizers, jewelry, art, quilting, sewing, hair decorations, journals, body lotions, scarves, hats, wind chimes, headbands and much more for a variety of prices. And gifts for as little as $5. The Second Annual Christmas Market will feature 23 vendors – veterans and newbies – from across the Yukon and northern British Columbia. Last year, the market was only one day, but this year, at the request of the vendors, it has grown to two days. The Second Annual Christmas Market takes place at The Old Firehall on Front St. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3. The special Kids Shopping Hour is on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Els Lundgaard is a Whitehorsebased writer.

o you sometimes forget that Whitehorse is a wilderness city? I do! Coming home to a heated apartment after a busy day, taking a shower and then turning on the TV. Every now and then I feel I have to reconnect myself to nature. That’s why my partner and I booked an off-the-grid cabin at the Wheaton River Wilderness Retreat on Annie Lake Road for a weekend in late October. Carmen and Robert have operated the Wheaton River Adventure business since 2008. They enjoy living off-the-grid with their three kids, offering hiking and canoe tours in the summer and renting two cabins and two guest rooms year round. The family gave us a warm welcome when we ar-

rived on a Friday evening after a one hour drive from Whitehorse. Walking towards the secluded cabin on the bank of the Wheaton River we immediately realized why it looked so familiar to us: it was the setting of last year’s Travel Yukon promotion video “Come to my Yukon.” In the real world, the cabin looks as magical as it did in the commercial! The wood stove was already burning when Carmen showed us the cabin. It was toasty warm inside and we immediately felt at home in the cozy, delightfully decorated cabin. The cabin sleeps up to four people and is a perfect place to spend a weekend as a couple, with kids or with friends. Soon after arriving, we started cont’d on page 13 ...

We enjoyed not being distracted by phone calls (“no service”) or the noise of the city. The crackling of the wood stove was the only sound we heard. Being surrounded by total darkness also helped us to have an amazing, 360 degree viewing experience of the northern lights. This was paradise for us as we always have a hard time finding spots that are dark enough to see the lights in Whitehorse. I must definitely tell my aurora hunter friends about this place, I thought that night. Saturday we spent relaxing in the

Fast moving northern lights brightened up the sky above the cabin sauna, reading, playing games and exploring the surrounding areas of the cabin. On Sunday we lit a fire outside and roasted smokies for lunch. The view of the mountains is spectacular from the fireplace right by the river. We also enjoyed petting the many friendly animals that live with the host family. Eight dogs, a horse, a donkey and several chickens can keep adults and kids busy during their stay. Looking inside the guestbook we realized just how many guests have already had a great time in this cabin since 2008. Phrases like “peaceful, relaxing, inspiring place with great scenery and super friendly hosts” can be found throughout the book. When we left on Sunday afternoon we were energized and ready to conquer the upcoming

challenges of the week. Whenever we feel like we are losing our connection to the wilderness

Gift of Community tree teaches kids kindness, and how to give back by Meagan Deuling When this was written, the week of November 21, the Christmas tree was set up in the lobby of the daycare, and it was adorned with paper ornaments. It was cold outside, the daycare was warm and cozy with the smell of grilled cheese sandwiches. Toddlers were grouped around a man, who was telling a story. This year the tree will be ready on November 30. The daycare will accept gifts up to December 15. The gifts will be delivered before Christmas eve. Last year the gifts were well received, says Greff. She can’t give more details than that because she doesn’t know who the kids are, and she didn’t see their reactions upon getting a gift. The tree is meant to do more than donate gifts to kids in need. It’s meant to teach the kids going to the daycare that there are kids in need. The daycare staff will take down the ornaments with the kids, and discuss the meaning of the information on it. It’s supposed to “teach acts of kindness,” says Greff, and it’s showing kids how to give back to their community. For Greff personally, the Gift of Community tree does even more. It gives her “that feeling of knowing you’re making a kid smile.” It’s to show the parents of the kids who receive the gifts that “even if they’re going through a hard time, there are people who care,” says Greff.

Christine Greff stands beside the Gift of Community tree, in the Learning Tree Daycare. People can come and choose ornaments between Nov. 30 and Dec. 15. The daycare is at 95A Lewes Boulevard, in the same plaza as the bowling alley

O

ne of the philosophical pillars of the Learning Tree Daycare is to teach the kids there about helping other people. “Teaching kindness and all of that stuff, it all feeds into what we want the kids to be learning,” says Christine Greff, who directs the daycare’s programming. Teaching kindness was the impetus behind the first Gift of Community tree, last year. Greff organizes the Gift of Community Tree. She works with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Yukon, the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre and Kaushee’s Place. These organizations bring information about kids who live in poverty, who won’t get much for Christmas. Information includes child’s age, gender, size, and maybe details like, loves Lego, or loves books. Each child’s information is written on an ornament and placed on the tree. Members of the public come to the daycare and choose an ornament. They buy a gift that corresponds with the child’s information. They wrap the gift, and return it with the ornament, to the daycare. It goes under the tree. There were so many gifts under the tree last year that some had to be moved into Greff’s office. “It was too much temptation for the kids who go to the daycare.” Last year the tree served 73 kids and mothers. Greff doesn’t know how many will be served this year, she is waiting for information from her three partners.

The Women’s Weaving Co-op Despite the close proximity to Cuzco and Machu Picchu, and the thousands of tourists that visit these sites each year, very few communities from the surrounding countryside benefit from tourism. These indigenous communities maintain a traditional way of life and are dedicated mainly to agricultural activities. In order to provide work opportunities for members of this community, men from Ccaccaccollo are employed by G Adventures to work as porters and cooks on the Inca Trail. Through the development of the women’s weaving co-op, we are providing a viable economic alternative for the women as well.

Time for Birds with Jenny Trapnell

The Yukon’s Winter Mermaid: The American Dipper A

happy melodic song rings along the Yukon River below the dam, and you imagine it’s a pretty little bird singing in a tree. But it’s 10 below. Then you notice a small chubby bird, coloured like slate, sitting on boulders near the rushing water. Its body is bobbing up and down. It suddenly plunges into the frigid waves. With it goes that pretty song. Of the the hardy songbirds that winter in North America, the American dipper is the only species that dives and swims. Found throughout western North America, it lives by fastflowing streams and rivers. On a recent Yukon Bird Club walk with expert Cameron Eckert, dippers are everywhere, showing off, as mermaids do, diving in and out of the water with ease. “It’s crazy,” is how Eckert de-

scribes this songbird’s swimming skills. “It’s gorgeous,” he says of the dipper’s song. Birder and artist Alyx Jones, also on the walk, is thrilled to see the dippers land close by. He says he prefers to call them (water) ouzels, another name for this species. In Yukon summers, dippers will move higher up into alpine streams, but from October to May they enjoy open water in Whitehorse below the dam or at the McIntyre Creek wetlands. The American dipper is the only songbird that dives and swims underwater. It’s one of the delights of winter birding of tiny fish and invertebrates. Or it will walk down rocks into the water (unlike mermaids, it has two strong legs and toes for gripping). Located mainly in southern Yukon, the American dipper has been seen as far north as the Firth River, according to the guidebook Birds of the Yukon Territory.

In the latest Checklist of Yukon Birds it’s listed as one of 43 species occurring here in winter. And it’s a cheerful bird, despite its drab appearance. “It sings all year round,” observes Eckert, though the full version of its song is heard only during spring mating season. (And listen for angry chatter as individ-

uals chase each other, defending their riverside feeding areas.). December 1st is the official start of winter birding, as our migrants have often left for hotter climes. “Just because it is winter doesn’t mean you need to hang up your binoculars,” says Eckert. Open water will host other water birds like ducks and mergansers. Bird feeders offer the best chance to see forest birds from the comfort of home. Use black oil sunflower seeds, and keep your feeders filled and clean. The seeds will attract chickadees, redpolls, and grosbeaks; suet will entice red-breasted nuthatches. You can now see increasingly large flocks of colourful bohemian waxwings wandering from mountain ash trees to berry bushes, gorging on the fruit. And expect to find more red crossbills after this year’s abundant cone crop. Stay tuned for info on the popular Christmas Bird Count, held each year between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5 each year. And if you want to hear a mermaid sing, you know where to go. Jennifer Trapnell has a passion for birding. Please send comments about her articles to birds@whatsupyukon.com.

Jozien doing what Jozien does best I use the word ‘bug’ here, to describe little creatures with … legs.

Insects, but more than that. Not everything I call ‘bug’ living underneath the ice are insects, some turn out to be crustaceans.

I

n the beginning of October, before it started snowing, there was a brief period when the thermometer dropped below zero Celsius long enough so that small lakes and ponds were able to freeze without the ice being mixed or covered with snow. A few days of clear ice! Now, there is a rule of thumb that ice has to be four inches thick before it should be walked on. The ice was not quite that thick, but the lake I set foot on is only a few feet deep and, from previous winters, I know where the weak spots are. In the Yukon, overflow is water on ice, often hidden as a wet surprise underneath a layer of snow. When you are lucky, it melts the snow on top and forms dark grey

spots on the snow-covered lake -this shows some of the weak spots on the ice. To go out onto the ice, there are all sorts of things I take into account, such as, is it thick enough? Is there flowing water underneath the ice? Could there be hollow spaces between ice and water? And you need to be aware of the surrounding area. For example, walking on swamp grass can be a wet experience on any given day, even when there is a layer of ice over it. But for that brief period early in October, the ice was clear as glass, and, stepping on it, right away I saw multiple lines drawn on the bottom of the lake in the light coloured mud. Laying down on my belly, and peering down through

the ice, I saw that these lines were being drawn by what looked like an inch long stick. Yes, the sticks were moving. They were caddisflies, moving along the bottom of the lake in their protective casing. In the guidebook Insects of the Yukon, edited by H.V. Dank, and J.A. Downs, I read that there are 145 species of caddisflies (Trichoptera) in the Yukon. Most of them here on the little lake I was laying on and seem to have similar casings with black and white bands. The caddisfly makes its casing with silk and the material available in the location where they live. Here, on the little lake, that means dark stuff and white mud cont’d on page 23...

Do you know someone who has made a memorable contribution to transportation in Yukon?

Richard’s Tire Tips

When was the last time YOU ROTATED YOUR TIRES?

Frank Slim, 1997 winner of the Transportation Pioneer of the Year award, contributed to the development of transportation in the North through the movement of people and freight along Yukon’s waterways. s is ation n i m or no 16 line f er 31, 20 d a e *D mb Dece

To make a nomination for the 2017 Yukon Transportation Hall of Fame Awards visit our website www.hpw.gov.yk.ca/trans/transportservices/hall_of_fame.html or call (867) 667-5832 or email thof@gov.yk.ca

Studies have shown that by performing a regular rotation every 8 - 10,000kms the life of your tires is significantly increased, in most cases by up to 25%. Other factors such as driving style, application and tire pressure will also affect tread life. Failure to regularly perform rotations has proven to cause several different abnormal wear patterns such as diagonal, accelerated and uneven wear. The common rule for rotations is to move the drive axle tires straight forward or back depending on the vehicle and the free rolling axle should be crossed.

Waterbugs in Winter ... continued from page 21 particles. These casings are works of art. Suddenly, a big bug skittered away along the bottom of the lake, disappearing into vegetation. It seemed huge, compared

to all the other creatures, being at least an inch long. Emailing with Jennifer Fang, an aquatic biologist in Toronto who has spent time looking at bugs here in the Yukon, I learned that this might have been a Hydrophilidae (scavenger beetle), or a Dytiscidae (diving beetle). Bonnie Burns, a water specialist in the Yukon, confirmed that diving beetles are fun creatures to watch. Again reading Insects of the Yukon, which says there are 113 different species of diving beetles known in the territory. Next, I peered into different places on different ponds. In the meantime, on my next visit to that lake, I found that snow had covered the ice, and I found myself bringing my prospector’s rock pick to hack a small hole in the ice to look again. That’s how I discovered Corixidae, also known as water boatmen, of which there are 12 known species in the Yukon. True to their name, water boatmen move through the water in rowboat fashion, their legs look like oars. Some are very tiny. I also discovered crustaceans. Amphipoda is a tiny crustacean known as freshwater shrimp, side swimmers or scuds. As one of the holes I made was slowly freezing over, a scud came up for a look with its black beady eyes. It seemed to realize the ice was reforming and quickly swam back to a warmer place and I think I saw it digging itself into the mud. The people that are with me, or the ones I talk to later, might not all lay on the ice peering down, but they are enamored with my quest. They mention even smaller creatures living in Yukon lakes: copepods, rotifers and cladocerans. They point out creatures who live on the ice: arachnids, spiders and what could have been a caddisfly come out of its casing for the occasion. Oh, and then there are snow fleas and what about snow flies, creatures that are basically made out of antifreeze. It is a big world out there and not all of us sleep through the winter.

The Cancan as Theatrical Spectacle Offenbach’s underworld comes to North America by Grant Simpson

O

n June 20, 1819 the composer who was destined to pen the cancan theme song was born. His name was Jacques Offenbach. Born in Cologne, Germany, he grew to be a virtuoso cellist. At 14 he was accepted into the Paris Conservatoire and travelled there to begin his studies. The year was 1833 and a new dance

The cancan evolved in the 1860s to include choreographed chorus line dancing in British Music Hall, French Music Hall and American variety theatre

Aisy Doodles with Aislinn Cornett Aislinn Cornett is an art therapist, writer, artist and adventurer born in Whitehorse, Yukon. She currently lives, writes and doodles on the beach in Mexico. craze called the cancan had begun to infiltrate Paris. Still in its infancy, the dance was purely amateur. Jacques and his fellow students were no strangers to the establishments where the cancan was being exhibited with great enthusiasm. Jacques found his studies at the Conservatoire unfulfilling. From 1835 to 1855 he was a cellist, and achieved international fame as a musician and a conductor. Jacques returned to Paris in 1855 and leased a small theatre, where he began to follow his passion for musical comedy. He produced several small-scale works that became very popular. Since his days as a student, the cancan had evolved and was being danced by professional cancaneuses who were big stars in Paris. This caught Offenbach’s attention, and when he featured the cancan in his first full-length operetta the dance was presented to upper crust society in a grandiose, elaborate and thrilling way. The operetta was called Orpheus in the Underworld. In it, Offenbach captured the cancan’s wild fancy-free spirit and presented it in a dazzling theatrical extravaganza. Offenbach is one of those composers with an endless supply of catchy and exciting tunes. In Orpheus, the big final number is called the “Infernal Gallop.” This song has become so associated with the dance that the song is known simply as The Cancan by audiences around the world. That has stuck for over 150 years. Once the cancan hit the big stage, it took on a new professional persona. Instead of being performed with a roomful of dancers, it became a performance spectacle for audiences. Orpheus began to appear around the world

and in 1861 it opened (in German) at the Stadt Theatre in New York. Various adaptations of the cancan began to appear in ballets, opera, operettas, the British Music Hall, burlesque and variety revues (America’s counterpart to British Music Hall), in saloon theatres, concert cafés and other smaller venues around the world. In 1866, the popularity of the cancan got the attention of Jarrett & Palmer, two widely known New York theatre producers and speculators. In The Naked Truth: An Inside History of the Black Crook, Joseph Whitton tells how the two producers were “in search of some gigantic attraction with which to dazzle and monopolize the attention of American theatre-goers and draw enough dollars from their pockets to comfortably line their own.” Whitton continues: “After ripe deliberation they decided that a Grand Ballet would be the proper thing. Jarrett’ s reasons for this were cogent, and his argument — as coming events were to prove — thoroughly sound. Legs are staple articles, and will never go out of fashion while the world lasts. They top the list of the ‘Beauties of Nature,’ and we will gather an array of them that will make even the surfeited New Yorker open his eyes and his pocket and hold his breath in astonishment.” In Part IV of the Cancan story, the Franco-Prussian War ends the first era of the cancan in Paris. Meanwhile in North America it spreads like wildfire. If you would to read more about Jacques Offenbach, I suggest Siegfried Kracauer’s Jacques Offenbach and the Paris of His Time. Shauna Jones is a performer, visual artist and set designer.
