Dawson City International Short Film Festival takes place April 13 to 16

The KIAC Building, originally known as the Odd Fellows Hall, is Dawson’s centre for arts and culture activities

he cupboard behind Dan Sokolowski’s head is still covered with the multi-coloured Post-it notes he’s been using to assign the 86 short films in this year’s Dawson City International Short Film Festival to various categories for Friday, Saturday and Sunday screenings that will fill up this Easter Weekend. The films were selected by a group of people that varied from four to 12 viewers, meeting twice weekly (except during the really cold weather) from October to February. At this writing, Sokolowski was still eating up the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture’s (KIAC) bandwidth and stressing Northwestel’s capacity by downloading

the digital files needed to screen the films. This stage of the process has taken about three weeks. In keeping with past practice, there will be a long film shown on Thursday, April 13, as an item distinct from the one minute to 30 minute shorts that have been placed in the 10 screenings. This year it’s Dawson City: Frozen Time, the 120 minute documentary by American filmmaker Bill Morrison that tells the story of 533 films that came to Dawson between 1910 and the 1920s, and ended up part of a landfill behind Diamond Tooth Gertie’s. They were unearthed when the Bonanza Centre Recreation complex was being built in 1978. This film has already been

Morrison will be here, along with Mike and Kathy Gates, who were involved in the film discovery when they were were both employed here. They are in the film and provided a lot of the research. The 10 film screenings, beginning after the Cold Cuts Video Festival Opening Reception at 4 p.m. on Thursday, have titles like Yukon Projections, Up River, Beyond the Aurora, Reel Canada, Down River, Strange Things Done. While most of the screenings will be held in the KIAC Ballroom, the Cold Cuts session will be in the ODD Gallery (downstairs). The “First Eyes” screening, which features films on First Nations themes, will be held at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre. Before Friday’s evening events begin, there will be a four-hour afternoon Video Boot Camp put on by Yellowknife’s Artless Collective. The aim is to produce a number of one minute films over the weekend and have them ready to show as part of Sunday night’s final screening, just before the presentation of the Made in the

Yukon Awards. Sokolowski is very excited to have Artless Collective participating in this year’s short film festival. The collective’s Dead North Film Festival is exclusively about Northern films, and he says they are doing great work. On that theme, though, he is happy to report an increasing number of Yukon made films at the short film festival, including entries by Suzanne Crocker, David Curtis, Daniel Janke and Lulu Keating, along with a strong group of films by young people this year. On Saturday, Max Fraser will present a talk called “Bringing Focus to Digital Media,” based on his experience creating the web-based companion to his 2015 documentary Bond of Strangers. Also on Saturday, Chris McNutt of the Screen Production Yukon Association will host a roundtable discussion on media training opportunities in the territory. On Sunday, Gail Maurice, whose film Assini won last year’s Audience Favourite Award here, will hold a workshop titled Scriptwriting from Personal Experience. That will be followed by KIAC’s current artist-in-residence, Sarah Gignac, screening two of her short films, and talking about her use of magic realism and fantasy. Sunday’s supper will feature homemade perogies served outside KIAC on Princess Street, with music provided by Dawson’s Corn. The final film screening, Break Up, will be followed by the awards ceremony and then by a live concert party with a band from Prince George called Frontal Lobotomy. The wood bison is the largest land mammal in North America

he first time I saw this sign, I had to stop and pull over on the side of the road to make sure I had read it correctly. It was early spring in 2012 and I was travelling up the Alaska Highway for the first of what would be uncountable times. The decision to come to the Yukon (like most of my decisions) was rather spurof-the-moment and I was woefully unprepared for both the pleasures and dangers of travelling the northern roads alone. Despite the signs, I was still surprised when I actually encountered the wood bison; huge, lumbering animals, shaggy as dogs, moving with a slow, certain confidence, totally unperturbed by the rushing cars as the grazed contentedly on the side of the highway. I remember seeing their curious, curving horns and their slumping backs, and thinking that they looked like a cave painting. It turns out this thought wasn’t far from the mark. Bison, says Tom Jung, senior wildlife biologist for Environment Yukon, have existed in North America since the Pleistocene epoch, which spanned from 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago, where they lived alongside the now-extinct woolly mammoths. Yukon’s bison, too, also went extinct at one point, but much more

recently than other megafauna; in the southwest Yukon, they vanished about 350 years ago, says Jung. The bison in the south east went extinct later, in 1930, due to increased hunting pressure. Why the south west population went extinct is a mystery, as it is unlikely they were hunted out, and Jung says it may have been a combination of habitat loss, disease and other factors. “A lot of the (southwest Yukon) used to be grassland,” Jung says, “and that has really changed, although small pockets of this habitat, on which the current bison population feeds, remains.” Both populations of bison have been reintroduced, although the animals seen along the Alaska Highway are not actually “Yukoners” and are managed by British Columbia. The southwest population – called the Aishihik Herd – was reintroduced into the Haines Junction area, onto the traditional territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, as part of a conservation project between 1988 and 1992. During this time 170 animals were released into the wild, a population which has swelled to 1,500 animals, making the Aishihik Herd one of the largest populations of wild bison in North America.

The herd has been so successful, biologically speaking, says Jung, that it sustains a hunting harvest, which allows people to get out on the land and take bison for food. The southeast population is not open to hunting, he notes. Bison can be exceptionally challenging to hunt, but very rewarding, both in terms of the experience is provides and the immense amount of food each animal can provide. According to Yukon government hunting pamphlets, an adult male bison can dress out at over 750 pounds of meat. The hunting season for these animals runs from September to March 31st. Wood bison are the largest land animal in North America, and differ from their smaller cousins, the plains bison, in that they are heavier and have thicker fur. Woods bison can stand nearly two metres tall and weigh up to 900 kg. Both males and females have horns. Feeding the North Year-round grown in Yukon produce to become a reality as Whitehorse-area agriculture company launches its aquaponics operation by Michael Bramadat-Willcock

“F

ood is important to me because I have a large family. Five boys under the age of nine” says Sonny Gray, CEO of North Star Agriculture Corp. as his company will soon announce plans to start construction in the Yukon. Like many in the Yukon he’s concerned about fresh produce. Yukoners like to buy local but the lack of a year round growing season in the Yukon limits our choices. Gray thinks he’s found the solution. His company plans to be the ﬁrst in the North to implement a potentially game changing new technology that he hopes will solve our food security issues and make the North more self-reliant. North Star Agriculture partnered with NutraPonics, an aquaponics company based in Alberta, a year and a half ago and plans on setting up shop in the Yukon by this fall. Produce is expected to hit Yukon shelves for winter 2018. Nutraponics describes its aquaponics technology as being “based on a self contained, self regulating ecosystem, optimized for superior, natural, organic plant growth.” Nutraponics gave North Star Agriculture exclusivity rights to the use of their technology north of 60. “It is our goal to create farms across the North of Canada. Feeding the North,” says Gray. Gray describes aquaponics as ﬁsh and plants existing in a symbiotic, pre-existing ecosystem. “A similar concept to rice paddies in Asia.” He says that unlike in other parts of Canada, agriculture hasn’t yet gotten its fair shake in the North. “Agriculture is an industry, and it’s consistent, unlike mining,” he argues. “We’ll give agriculture a voice. “Within the next 10 years agriculture will be recognized in the Yukon.”

Gray and his partners are planning an all-year facility that would provide food to grocery stores; they hope to help the North develop sustainable agriculture. “Our vision as an agriculture development corporation is to create a more self- sustainable Yukon. Creating food, fertilizer and grain locally, creating jobs and contributing to the economy. “Commercial scale agriculture could be, in the next 20 years, a constant, steady financial contributor to the Yukon’s economy.” Gray envisions the North becoming a global leader in agricultural technologies as we find new ways to solve our food security issues for ourselves. “To feed the north we’re gonna have to become creative,” he says. “People are going to want to know how we did this.” Gray says that his company will put the Yukon at the forefront of the industry by “marrying agriculture with cutting edge technology in a Northern environment – effectively solving a long-standing issue surrounding food security.” He sees potential for agritourism, too. “If I was visiting the Yukon standing in a snow bank in minus 40 weather and you informed me that they were growing vegetables right now down the road I’d have to see that. I’d be curious.” Gray says that this kind of thing hasn’t been done on a commercial scale in the North yet. “Traditionally, we’ve looked at solving our food problems on a smaller scale, and we are experiencing a certain level of success, however, those methods aren’t fixing the issues surrounding the quality of produce at the local supermarket in the dead of winter,” he

One might think that fruits and veggies produced through aquaponics technology wouldn’t taste as good as those grown in conventional soil. Gray begs to differ and says it’s just the opposite. He says that food produced by this method tastes stronger and more “real” because it’s getting all the right nutrients. “A plant grown on our farm gets 100 per cent of the light that it requires daily. The roots are literally laying in the nutrient rich water meaning they’re pulling 100 per cent of the nutrients and water that they require. Closed door facility means no bugs, moles or birds chewing up the plants. The result is a plant that’s maximized its potential as a plant. It’s rich with nutrients and tastes the way a plant should taste.” Gray says leafy greens such as kale, romaine, baby spinach, lettuce; and herbs such as basil, mint and parsley do especially well with this type of agriculture. Seasonal Recipes with Sydney Oland

aving recently spent some time in Latin America to attend a friend’s wedding (congrats again Mr. and Mrs. Spinks!) my head is full of vibrant fruit, spicy seasoning and lovely fresh seafood. While the food in that part of the world is a trove of fantastic recipes the one I kept ordering again and again was the humble shrimp cocktail. Each time I ordered it seemed a bit different, so this version combines all of my favourite elements from eating this simple dish for weeks on end, to be exact – ketchup and mayonnaise.

I saw various sizes of shrimps used in this dish, from tiny salad shrimp to absolute monsters of the deep. I tend to land somewhere in the middle but tailor it to your preference. t was a dark and stormy night a few weeks back. Dark enough and stormy enough that one might be forgiven for thinking the End Times were nigh. It began with little fanfare, when the evil OS known as Windows 10 (aka the pale rider of the digital apocalypse) blithely informed me it had taken a notion to update itself. Did I want to restart on my own, or let Bill Gates handle it for me?

“It’s okay, Bill. I’ve got this,” I muttered toward my screen – a conversation no doubt overheard and widely shared by my microwave, the toaster and every electronic device within a six-block radius. As the rude winds howled, I hit Restart and waited. And waited. And waited. In some unseen dimension, megabyte after megabyte unspooled in an agony of slow motion.

Desperate times demand desperate actions Had I made a fatal error by having the hard drive replaced last month? Had I been wrong to allow Windows 10 onto the premises in the ﬁrst place? Had I been a fool to abandon my Remington Noiseless Portable, circa 1936? Yes, yes, and probably yes. After nearly an hour, the reboot ﬁnally took hold. An hour in which I was cut off from the

world’s Sturm und Drang as surely as if I lived off-grid on the Annie Lake Road. The screen ﬂickered back to life. I entered my password and proceeded to do what geezers of feel called upon to do as midnight approaches: I clicked on Facebook. Nothing. Double-click. Nada. Triple-click. Rien, zip, diddly, no sale, nobody home.

whirring and clanking in its innards, my laptop grudgingly came back to life. Facebook did not. Desperate times demand desperate actions. I hit Restart yet again. And waited, yet again. Rinse and repeat, and still no Facebook. No clarity on the worldmadness front. No cat pics, memes, or anger-filled comment threads. I felt empty inside. Then it hit me: try Uninstall instead. On the fourth or fifth attempt, Facebook finally disappeared from both the app tray and the taskbar. Miraculously, the replacement I downloaded worked on the first try. Equilibrium instantly flooded back into my life. Once again, I could immerse myself in gifs, vids and news of dubious authenticity. Once again, I could trade witticisms with cherished friends and reviled strangers (or cherished strangers and reviled friends). Once again, I could prove my moral superiority by not validating idiotic posts by adding idiotic replies of my own. The storm had passed. The apocalypse had been averted. Geezer life would carry on.

Graduation for both classes consisted of a stage show for the public. Wiegers notes that students had to overcome fears not only of performing, but of being on stage with virtually no clothes on. “We don’t address body issues in class – it’s not a self-help group – but those issues are always there,” Wiegers says. “People are

awson City did not have burlesque in its repertoire until long-time local resident Rachel Wiegers decided to take up (or off, as the case may be) the mantle and bring it to town. Wiegers says her journey towards burlesque started when she was young and discovered her father’s girlie magazine stash. “I was too young to understand sexuality then,” she says while we sat in a local pub sipping martinis. It was, instead, the comfortability and unabashed nudity of the models that fascinated and intrigued her. “And I especially loved the glamour shots with the hair and clothing,” she says. As she grew up, she became involved with tacky pageants at summer camp, got interested in vintage fashions as a young adult, and developed a love for being on the stage. When a friend suggested trying a burlesque course in Vancouver, which incorporated all of these things, she decided to go for it. “The course was amazing,” says Wiegers. Her graduation performance, however, was not. “I froze on stage – I was petriﬁed and unprepared,” she says. “It was a terrible performance.” After she got back to Dawson, she was asked to perform burlesque at the Dawson City Music

Rachel Wiegers aka Chevonne of the Yukon scared of their bodies.” Wiegers believes strongly that the way to get over it is by going public. “By the end of the course, nobody cares anymore – they forget about it – they’re too busy having fun with hair, makeup, costumes, etc.” Each student in the class picks her own story for the performance. “It’s personal for them,” says Wiegers. “We only advise that their numbers are understandable and relatable to the audience.”

But, I ask Wiegers, despite burlesque offering the positive aspect of conquering body type fears, aren’t these girls still just playing into the women-are-sex-objects stereotype? Wiegers has an answer for me. “They are reclaiming their sexuality on their own terms,” she says. “The girls are encouraged to ﬁnd an alter-ego, someone who is a part of them and is their most powerful person,” she says. “Burlesque is a tool to pull that person out.” She goes on to say that it’s about what you want, not about acting the way someone else wants you to, or how you think you should. “When I was young, I behaved more to what I thought others wanted. Now it’s take me or leave me, and I don’t care what others want. It’s part of what makes me feel like a strong human. Burlesque helped me do that. inter in Whitehorse is beautiful, but long. By the end of April 2016 we traveled down south to ﬁnd Vancouver fully in bloom already. A reasonably priced and very scenic train ride along the coast brought us to Seattle. After discovering this attractive city for a few days, we took over a truck camper at the GoNorth Car and RV rental station close to the Seattle International Airport. GoNorth vehicles are not numbered, they have names, which makes your camper like a friend right away. Our truck camper answered to the name of “Josey.” Our camping adventure with Josey started on the Olympic Peninsula. From there we took the ferry to charming Victoria on Vancouver Island. Slowly, we made our way towards the northern part of Vancouver Island – spending several days exploring the interior and the east coast. We enjoyed walking in the fairytale-like rainforest, a very different vegetation from

what we knew in the Yukon. Due to travelling early in the camping season, we had a lot of great spots just for ourselves. After an impressive ferry trip through the Inside Passage we were back on the mainland. A guided tour at the historic North Pacific Cannery in Port Edwards gave us a great insight into the salmon industry. We were also impressed with the huge dimension – 10 km by 3 km! – of the lava bed at the Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park, north of Terrace. It was a little too early for salmon fishing in the Skeena River, but several lakes – such as the Dease Lake – along the scenic Stewart-Cassiar Highway offered great fishing opportunities. It was an awesome time of year to see lots of wildlife along this 725 km stretch of highway that runs north to the Yukon border – we stopped counting the bears on the roadside. eonardo da Vinci said the “human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art,” which it is. The foot has with a complex network of 26 bones, 37 joints, more than 100 ligaments, some 20 muscles, thousands of nerve endings, tendons and tissues uniquely designed to withstand pounds of pressure and stress. Whether you are active or inactive, feet and lower legs bear it all. I weigh about 160 pounds, which means 160 pounds of force when standing! Do you stand a lot? When I walk my body deals 240 to 280 pounds of force, and when I run my body deals 320 to 480 pounds of force. All this force is supported by size 10 feet. As Da Vinici observed, feet are designed to take the pressure. Now consider this: how is your foot wear designed to promote the health of your foot and subsequently your entire body? What surfaces are you walking and running on; asphalt or snow pack? Do you have pain anywhere? Do you have dry and cracked heels

Before buying footwear take a good look at your whole foot, meet your foot, look between toes, at the shape of each toe and toe nails, meet the bottom of your foot – what do you notice? or calluses on the outside of your big toe, or on the pads of the sole of your feet? What about ingrown toenails? Take a moment to think about this. Is your footwear interfering with the health of your feet?? Wearing shoes that are too small is most common; I have to stop myself from approaching complete strangers to tell them if they simply wore a size where their toes wouldn’t have to curl up they’d be preventing foot problems down the trail. Before buying footwear take a good look at your whole foot, meet your foot, look between toes, at the shape of each toe and toe nails, meet the bottom of your foot – what do you notice? Match your foot problems, such as, calluses to the wear on your

shoes. Socks and shoes that retain moisture add a whole other dynamic. (Sniff sniff – know what I mean?) Take a moment to dry out all footwear. Athletes and dancers who prefer to wear tight ﬁtting footwear in order to “feel” the court, deck, track or trail do hurt their feet. Socks are also a big deal, socks that are too short or tight squish toes toward each other; encouraging the nails to grow into the skin. This is especially true if you are a fan of clipping toenails too short. Short nails with sharp edges combined with tight, moisture retaining socks and narrow toed shoe will lead nail growth toward the inviting pinched ﬂesh at the sides of the toe. This April start thinking of toenails as bumpers, with a pro-

tective function. Give your toes the space to work for you. Practice shifting from cutting to filing. Tip: To avoid splitting and jagged edges file nails following the shape of the toe to a length where the free edge is visible above the skin. h what a wonderful time we live in. If you are in a strange, new city and need to know where the best coffee is served, there is an app for that. Just touch your smartphone. If you need to know if those noodles are gluten-free, well, the package has a barcode and you have an app for that. But to allow us to just touch and swipe our way to enlightenment, someone has to sit at a computer, first, to enter streams and streams of code onto a computer screen. To normal people, this code looks like gibberish. But, to a programmer, this is art. Yet, at the same time, this is logic and order. Who are these people? “We are lazy,” says Mike Kasprzak, a programmer who owns Subarctic Systems in Whitehorse. “We want everything to be done automatically,” he explains. “That is what computers are for and so we find a way to do it.” So, he and other programmers will inexplicably hunker over their keyboards for hours and hours to make some required task easy. It should be explained here that a smartphone is, indeed, a computer. It has more computing power than those computers that put a man on the moon, says Kasprzak. From those early, heady days, the generation of Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak and Kasprzak asked, “What can you make it do?” “It was real sci-fi stuff,” says Kasprzak. “Can we make these computers talk to each other? Can we talk to each other on the other side of the planet? “And, that is what we did. “It was like beating the system; it’s a game; it is like a logic puzzle. You want the solution… there has to be an answer and you will find it. “That is the challenge.” Kasprzak entered the computer field with a job with Interac in the financial security depart-

Mike Kasprzak is one of many programmers who make the miracle of smartphones possible. For instance, this Coffee Locator app that his company created ment. They were allowed a .0001 percent failure rate, which would be a transaction that could not be explained. So, he found himself up against hackers trying to ﬁnd vulnerabilities. After the dot-com bust, he moved on, but continued to dabble with computers. He and his brother, Jake – “Who is a programmer and actually went to school for it” – were chatting when those words, which is always how apps are born, were uttered: “Listen, I have an idea for an app.” It was for an app to check foods to see if they were gluten-free by scanning the barcode. “Was it the ﬁrst app to do that?” Kasprzak asks. “No. But it had the functionality that we wanted.”

Is This Gluten-Free? is available, free, on Google Play. It has been download 50,000 times and has earned the company a couple of thousand dollars. Or, as Kasprzak puts it, “an extra trip to Mexico”. The latest app is Coffee Locator. “It’s a pretty neat little app,” says Kasprzak. “It knows where I am and will tell me where a coffee shop is. “One click and there is an ad – that is how I make money – and click again and there is a map and driving directions and photos of the place.” To get these little miracles into your phone, Kasprzak had to sign up as a developer with Google on its online form. “You make your app, you test your app and encrypt it with Google encryption to make it secure.” But then he is only ﬁve percent done. Then comes the debugging

process to ensure it will work properly on every Android device possible. Yes, it would be easier to create an app for iPhones, but he has philosophical differences with Apple. Then there are the apps that they create for private businesses. Seeing their contact information on these apps is one way they attract new contracts. Then there is word-of-mouth advertising. “A lot of my customers don’t know where I am,” says Kasprzak. “I’ll have phone meetings at 3 a.m. because they are in the UK and nine hours ahead. “But, it is okay with them because it is all about the product and the price.” He will create an app for you, too.
